Mechanical And Still Bank Sale Generates Nearly $1.8 Million In Sales “Jonah And The Whale” Bank By J. & E. Stevens Realizes $119,925
The Church of the Sacred Heart in Trenton, N.J., is the oldest Catholic Church in the area and recently conserved the mural of “Saint Michael and the Devil.” The original parish was built in 1814. The architect, Patrick Charles Keeley, designed and built the present building. “The restrained, if not somber brownstone exterior heightens the surprise of an elaborate interior design. Three pairs of exterior double doors lead into a small, spare vestibule, from which the main entry to the sanctuary narrows to a pair of doors. To the south of the vestibule, in the base of the tower, is a small chapel. The sanctuary is divided into a central, barrel-vaulted nave with groinvaulted side aisles of slightly lower height. Separating the nave and side aisles is a square column arcade of highly polished gray

The ribbing that springs from these piers divides the side aisles into seven sections, each of which is marked by a large stained glass window. At the center or each groin-vault, the ceiling is painted with a Celtic cross. The barrel vault of the nave is elaborately painted with frescoes. The decorative painting continues above the piers of the nave arcade, where portraits of the saints appear in roundels. Between each of the stained glass windows are paintings of the “Stations of the Cross.” There are 24 extraordinary stained glass windows designed by Continued on page 6

A “Jonah and the Whale” mechanical bank sold for $119,925. Morphy’s premier Mechanical and Still Bank Sale held on Jan. 14 offered collectors the opportunity to drop a dime on some of the finest and rarest antique banks. After all the change was sorted, 42 lots hit between $5,000 and $10,000, and 12 lots hit between $25,000 and $55,000. All prices reported include a 23 percent buyer’s premium. Examples featuring classic tales and beloved characters captured the imaginations of bidders. Lot #341, a “Jonah and the Whale” castiron mechanical bank by J. & E. Stevens, was the big fish of the day, realizing $119,925. Lot #247, a “Little Red Riding Hood” mechanical bank by W.S. Reed, huffed and puffed its $10,000-$20,000 estimate away to realize $33,210. And two tin mechanical selections from Germany added a little foreign intrigue to this sale. They included lot #255, a scarce “Snow White” bank with a key trap that sold for $14,760, and lot #246, a smiling Saalheimer & Strauss “Golliwog” bank that realized $13,200. Condition played an important role this year as near-gem examples surpassed expectations.” World and ancient coins sold more than $18 million during its annual auction held in conjunction with the New York International Numismatic Convention (NYINC) at the Waldorf Astoria in New York and online. The star of the NYINC show was the Meiji 13 (1880) proof set of Japanese coinage, from the Commander collection, the most valuable of which sold for $305,500, followed by an 1880 Meji gold Proof 10 Yen, which sold for $270,250. “We serve the most significant numismatic collections in the world,” said Cristiano Bierrenbach, executive vice president of international numismatics. “New markets and stellar collections underscore our growth plans for 2017.” Heritage maintains offices in New York, Dallas, Beverly Hills, San Francisco, Chicago, Palm Beach, Paris, Geneva, Amsterdam and Hong Kong. We recently observed the inauguration of Donald J. Trump as our 45th president. It was pictured in newspapers and magazines and, of course, on television news. It was everywhere. But what was the first U.S. Presidential Inauguration to be photographed? Louis Daguerre is typically credited with inventing the photograph and introduced his daguerreotype in 1839. But while the daguerreotype worked well for still portraits, it was not ideal for photographing events and large crowds. Back in 1857, while the U.S. Capitol was still under construction, it was John Wood, using a wet plate collodion camera, who first photographed the inauguration. It was for Pennsylvania’s James Buchanan, our 15th president. In 2016, Sotheby’s sold a photograph taken at Lincoln’s first inauguration in 1861 for $27,500. COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT considerable amount of time in the malls and shops. Some that had been great were now pretty bad, with lots of lowgrade flea market items. Another that used to have wonderful treasures now was filled with high-priced mediocre items. And the one mall that I had given up on when they brought in an auctioneer to fill their space turned out to have returned to greatness, and we spent a lot of time and money there. My one lesson of the trip came from making purchases where the mall had poorly

The other week, we were making a college visit to northern Pennsylvania, and we stopped at a few of my favorite antique malls and shops. Let me begin by saying that my grandmother’s family has roots that go deep in Northumberland County, and so a visit back there is like a trip back home. The antique malls in that neck of the woods tend to have really wonderful treasures, if you approach the subject broadly. Like most of Pennsylvania and Maryland’s older counties, there are many early objects that appear for collectors to choose from. I recall going to country sales where you could literally trace the family’s history by their possessions. One might find a set of Windsor chairs and a blanket chest followed by a Victorian parlor suite and a 1920s Colonial revival dining room. The oil lamps would be there packed away when electricity came in case the power failed. Lots of miscellaneous china and glass collected over generations, including the odd set of Limoges acquired perhaps in
20th century. While rural electrification came early into Pennsylvania, families still held onto their old lamps for a long period, and this was clearly one family’s cache of them. What did I find? Some very good quality lamps for the new house, some Christmas decorations for Mary, some jewelry for Jane and some quilts for Kim. All were priced reasonably, but it was the connection back to an area where the family came from that made the purchases particularly appealing. The other thing that I noted was that some of the malls and shops had changed over the years. Now that seems self-evident, but it had been about four years since I had really spent a

Niagara Falls or Bermuda. All in all, one could see the history of a family in a single auction. Similarly, when I go to the antique malls, I can find the traces of those families as well. It is those booths that I cherish spending time in. This trip, I found a booth with a lovely collection of Pennsylvania German imprints. They were in impressive condition and came from an old Schwenkfelder family who probably moved West. The books clearly had been well cared for. They were accompanied by the usual run of church histories and related items showing the theological progression of the family over the years. In another booth, there was a collection of about a dozen kerosene lamps all dating from the early
trained staff on duty. Instead of keeping things moving, they followed procedures to the letter, meaning that it took more than a half-hour to check out. Such malls need to really spend some time working with

reach the painting. The wall was first consolidated and then the paint layer. The years of soot, candles and incense were carefully cleaned and removed under magnification. The cleaning process revealed the coloration of the original painting. There were many loss areas and old repairs that were conserved and inpainted to match the original composition. A final coat of varnish was applied to protect the mural. The conservation of “Saint Michael and the Devil has been completed and is protected for many generations to come.

The chest had sold for $2,124 on May 16, 2015, at Conestoga’s auction for the Harry Hartman estate. A Lancaster, Pa., Chippendale walnut slant front desk, ca. 1780, signed by the maker, Conrad Lind (17531834), went for $3,120 (est. $3,000-$5,000). The late John Snyder wrote about Lind in the “Magazine Antiques, May 1984 issue, which accompanied the desk. It has a fan carved prospect drawer flanked by smooth quarter columns. The brasses were replaced, and the top has losses to its finish. From Berks County, Pa., a fine, paint-decorated blanket chest attributed to Jacob Blatt (1801-78), illustrated in Fales’ “American Painted Furniture, sold for $14,400 (est. $10,000$15,000). It sold for $5,500 at the Howard and Jean Lipman sale through Sotheby’s on Nov. 14, 1981. The photos showcase a cross-section of material from this auction. Several years ago, there was a leak in the roof at the outer tower of the church. Water found its way down into the plaster wall behind the mural of “Saint Michael and the Devil. The plaster and the painting were affected, and large areas of the mural were damaged and flaking. Reverend Dennis Apoldite decided that something needed to be done so the mural would not disintegrate any further. Starstruck: Gene Marshall, Screen Dream
LIVING ESTATE TOY AUCTION Promos, Diecast, Models & Kits, Pressed Steel, Trains, Cast Iron WED., MARCH 1 AT 1 P.M.
Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century By Donald-Brian Johnson Gene Marshall. Remember her? Sure you do. Gene was the toast of Tinseltown. The sweetheart of the silver screen. A goddess of Hollywood’s Golden Age. Not ringing any bells? Well, how about her movies? Who could forget “Red Venus,” “Bird of Paradise,” and “Sparkling Seduction.” Hmmm, you murmur. I know my classic movies, but I haven’t heard of any of those. Or of Gene Marshall, either. What gives? As they say in the projection booth, “let’s rewind.”
Gene Marshall, Hollywood legend, exists in a world all her own. Literally. Actually, it’s Mel Odom’s world, since he’s the creative genius who came up with the “Gene” concept. Gene was the first of the limited-edition high-fashion “living dolls” intended for the adult collector, which sprang up during the 1990s. Each Gene doll came with a “certificate of authenticity,” noting its number in the original issue run. After the doll was “retired,” that Gene edition was available only on the secondary market. Odom was an acclaimed illustrator, whose dreamlike, doll-faced works had graced publications such as “Time.” He developed the idea of Gene after viewing a collection of French couture clothing from World War II displayed on miniature wire mannequins.
These very specific renditions of mid-20th century glamour sparked his imagination. What if there were a doll based on that era, small enough to be collectible, yet large enough to effectively display high fashion? His illustrative talents came up with a facial design that was an amalgam of such great screen beauties of the 1940s and ’50s as Lana Turner, Rita Hayworth, Hedy Lamarr, and (as you’ve probably already guessed) Gene Tierney. Working with sculptor Michael Evert, Odom was able to make his Gene dreams a reality. Moving from a singledimension illustration to a three-dimensional model required some adjustments. How tall should Gene be? The eventual decision was 15.5 inches, so as to best display
the outfits and make the dolls easier to dress. As for Gene’s tiny waistline, it was more than just movie-star vanity. Since doll costumes often connect at the waist, gathered fabric, coupled with a more generous waistline, would give Gene oddly unbalanced proportions. And, while most adult dolls boast toothy grins, Gene’s expression is enigmatic. Collectors could read into Gene’s expression whatever struck their fancy. But what was the hook? Well, a bit of backstory never hurts, so a movie-star alternate reality was created. It was specific in its use of detail (Gene’s “discovery,” her movie credits, and her co-stars), yet vast enough to encompass a wide range of costume

Tioga County, N.Y., Native’s Civil War Drum Beats Again
One such man was Oscar Barton. Growing up in Vestal, N.Y., and settling in Owego, he enlisted during the Civil War as a drummer. His long life and legacy demonstrate his commitment to his community, and his drum survives today as a reminder of the diversity and dedication of generations of Tioga County, N.Y., residents. African-American Participation After the Emancipation Proclamation was issued, the federal government began actively recruiting AfricanAmerican soldiers under the name United States Colored Troops (USCT). Over the course of the war, more than 170,000 African-American soldiers fought for the North. By the end of combat in 1865, about one in every ten soldiers in the Union Army was African-American. A descendant of freedmen from Rhode Island, Oscar Barton was living in Vestal, N.Y., when the Civil War began. In 1863, Barton enlisted in the
Union Army at 30 years old along with his brother and five nephews. In fact, this was not his family’s first brush with military activity. Barton’s maternal grandfather, Thomas Reynolds of Bristol, R.I., had been a soldier during the American Revolution. When Barton enlisted some decades later, he became a drummer in Company B of the 26th USCT Regiment for the Union Army. He served for two years, carrying his drum across the South and participating in military engagements such as James Island, Honey Hill, and Tillifinny Station. The Beat Goes On As a military drummer, Barton filled an important leadership role and endured many of the same hardships as other infantrymen. During the Civil War, drummers played an integral role in military operations by counting march time on the parade grounds and offering communications on the battlefield as dictated by their commanders. If a drummer were to skip a step or miss a beat, it could have serious consequences for the dispatch of troops or the organization of infantry. They were also typically recruited in times of need as stretcher-bearers or aides to surgeons in medical outposts. Barton served until the end of the war in 1865 and then returned to upstate New York,

settling in Owego. Unfortunately, he struggled for many years with chronic illnesses related to his military service, ultimately impairing his ability to work. Eventually, a chronic paralytic condition confined him to a wheelchair. However, he appeared nobly for one final public engagement with his drum on July 4, 1892. At the age of 60, he went to pay respects and play his drum at the dedication of the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in Owego’s courthouse square. According to accounts from the crowd gathered there that day, Barton stroked his drum as if he had never lost a step. Barton lived with his daughter and son-in-law until he passed away in 1933 at the age of 101 and was buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Owego. Legacy Barton’s drum was donated to the Tioga County Historical Society in the 1990s. It had been displayed a number of times in Civil War-themed and other local exhibits, but like many of the war-related items at the Tioga History Museum, it was in dire need of restoration. In 2011, a significant flood affected the downtown region of Owego where the Tioga County Museum is located, and over four feet of water flooded the collections area. Oscar Barton’s drum survived, but in even worse shape than before.

the community that history has kind of overlooked,” said Kevin Lentz, director of the Tioga County Historical Society. “We actually had several former slaves, or freedmen, living in the county, and they were prominent citizens, but that’s a part of history that really isn’t well known in the area.” Now that the drum is restored to its original condition, visitors to the Tioga History Museum can appreciate the piece and realize its vital use

Upstate New York has had a long history with the upholding of civil liberties. From the protection of freed slaves after the Civil War to the promotion of women’s rights through the passage of the 19th amendment, Civil rights leaders like Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, and Harriet Tubman all called upstate New York their home. But in the Southern Tier of the state, many residents of various creeds and colors also contributed to their society in ways that left an indelible mark on their communities’ history.
In 2016, the Early Owego Antique Center was proud to fund the complete restoration of the drum to preserve Barton’s legacy as well as the contributions of many AfricanAmericans from Tioga County who served in the Civil War. The drum was sent to the Cooperman Fife and Drum Company in Bellows Fall, Vt., where it was outfitted with new ropes, snares, and goatskin drumheads, all accurate to the drum’s time period. Today, the piece is on display at the Tioga History Museum along with a photograph of Oscar Barton, both looking bright as ever. The restoration of the drum serves as a testament to the service of African-Americans in Tioga County. “Oscar Barton, himself, represents a part of

Hundreds appear daily on eBay, and most are available for less than $100. Gene dolls offer up a fantasy of old Hollywood at its most fan-magazine-iest, all wrapped up in one mightily attractive package of dollmaking expertise. Gene Marshall may never have actually strutted her starry stuff across a real-life Hollywood soundstage, but it’s fun to think that

Presidential Campaign Postcards History, politics, and patriotism are just a few of the many ingredients that combine to make up the political campaign postcard. Add a dash of artistry and satire into the mix, and the result is a very popular collectible. Such souvenir items are eagerly sought today by both deltiologists (postcard collectors) and political Americana enthusiasts. They are historic documents of the most important of all reoccurring events in the nation’s history - our presidential elections. In 1900, souvenir postcards became another tool used to promote White House hopefuls. This advertising medium, relatively inexpensive and easy to distribute, allowed presidential hopefuls to reach large numbers of voters. Since the turn of the 20th century, no presidential campaign has failed to include them in its bid for votes. Many years ago, presidential postcards were both printed to order for use by the candidates as propaganda and by commercial publishers for sale as novelty items to a curious public. Collectors today make no distinction
