From Our Files By Andrew Richmond S.H. McElswain founded a framing company in 1871 in Evanston, Ill., but the name by which it is known to collectors today comes from a partnership that began 12 years later in 1883, with McElswain’s bookkeepers Charles Macklin and John C. Newcomb, who formed a partnership in order to assume command of the business. The company, which would have enough success to support showrooms in Chicago and New York as well as a crew of traveling salesmen, owed much of its early success to the relationships it established with schools of artists, like the American Impressionists and the Taos School, as well as with specific artists such as John Singer Sargent, Maxfield Parrish, George Bellows and many others. By working directly with their important artist clients to develop frame styles and finish treatments to complement their paintings,

Anthony van Dyck’s “Self-Portrait” circa 1620-21, oil-on-canvas, is courtesy of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641) was one of the most celebrated and influential portraitists of all time. He enjoyed an international career that took him from his native Flanders to Italy, France, and, ultimately, the court of Charles I in England. Van Dyck’s elegant manner and convincing evocation of a sitter’s inner life, whether real or imagined, made him the favorite portraitist of many of the most powerful and interesting figures of the 17th century. His sitters were poets, duchesses, painters, and generals, represented the social and artistic elite of his age, and his

exhibition devoted to his work to be held in the United States in more than 20 years. Through approximately 100 works, the show explores the versatility and inventiveness of a portrait specialist, the stylistic development of a draftsman and painter, and the efficiency and genius of an artist in action. Organized chronologically around the different geographic chapters of Van Dyck’s career, the exhibition documents the artist’s development from an ambitious young apprentice into the most sought-after portrait painter in Europe. The show also includes a small selection of comparative works by Van Dyck’s contemporaries, including Rubens, Jordaens, and Lely, and a special installation of the “Iconographie,” Van Dyck’s celebrated series of portrait prints. I have never been one who collected just one area and always applauded those folks who can latch onto a single subject and pursue it with the drive of a bulldog. Having known several in my life, I continue to be impressed by their knowledge within their subject. For me however, I have been a collector of collections. Reading a book on restaurateur/hotelier Fred Harvey got me started collecting postcards of his images of the West. Working at a Victorian house museum inspired a lifelong love of Victorian. The list goes on. I suspect that many collectors are like me. Some chase a range of things for nostalgia’s sake (the table like grandma had) or for instant gentility (as we used to joke that all Lancaster, Pa., lawyers had to have an Eichholtz portrait and a tall case clock in their offices). Others decorate in a particular style or taste and so

passed on the piece. The price was not bad if great, but a bit expensive for a decorator item and so it stayed behind. Maybe I passed on the Holy Grail or maybe I chose wisely. And thus is the dilemma of every collector.

coming home or not. The work was not well done and there were frequent smudges, smears and cross outs in the calligraphy. The images of the figures were smeared and in some cases indistinct. So, my first assumption was that this scroll was not an artistic masterpiece according to my aesthetic. What was it then? Scenario one was that it was very old and someone in the 1970s (probably when it was framed) had gone to great trouble to preserve it, but the work did not seem to possess great age. The second scenario is that it was expensively framed for sentimental reasons and thus the quality of the piece was second to the personal value. I walked around for 20 minutes and went through every scenario. I had never purchased a scroll before and was basing my assessment of this piece more on the quality of the framing than the piece itself. So, I was kind of on my own to determine if it was a great bargain or someone’s curiosity. My answer, well, good luck to the next collector who may decide to buy it or not. I

This Week: The Mental Game: Part One they want to furnish a beautiful home in a particular look. So my question is how are decisions made about what comes home for the collection? This seems like an easy question to answer - “because I like it.” In this age of tight pocketbooks, rampant fakes, and a host of international buying options, pulling the trigger on something is a lot more complex. Yesterday, I was out at an antiques co-op and a massive six-foot framed scroll captured my eye. It was from India and appeared to be either a religious text or possibly a genealogy along with numerous drawings. It was handpainted on fabric and had been expensively mounted in the frame. The price of $129 was not bad but I struggled with it. On one hand, such a piece would look great in my Victorian parlor - or as the seven-year-old calls it: “the treasure room.” On the other, I was not sure what it really was - treasure or trash. This was a case where I did not know what the object was and so I had to try and decide, based on what I could observe, as to whether it was

Red Tags At York Show Indicate Numerous Success Stories Melvin “Butch” Arion held his 166th semiannual original York Antiques Show and Sale in its familiar York Fairgrounds Expo Center’s Memorial Hall East on Jan. 29, 30, and 31. Fortunately for the 96 exhibitors and faithful showgoers, the winter storm that hit the region with twoplus feet of snow occured the weekend prior and not on the weekend of the show. The fairgrounds were adequately plowed by Wednesday’s setup and the entire week provided clear skies. Setup continued Thursday and many dealers reported selling was brisk and active. The show opened at 10 a.m. on Friday with a strong gate. The previous weeks snow did not deter travelers. If anything, cabin fever prompted more showgoers to
converge onto York. “It ended up very well, the fairgrounds did an excellent job clearing the parking lot and access roads. We had very good crowds on Friday, even a bit better on Saturday and many people bought,” said Arion. “Butch does such a good a job bringing people in and I think people were anxious to get out after being snowed in,” said dealer Jamie Price of Carlisle, Pa. “The attendance was definitely strong, especially on Saturday. For sales, I would say, results were mixed, but this is the case with any show,” said dealer Scott Brasseur of Prospect, Pa. Arion’s show has a diverse roster of dealers. The show has real spirit and many exhibitors sold a broad range of material. The diversity of

The portrait was $1,275 from Hanes and Ruskin. A punched tin coffee pot offered by Columbus, Ohio dealer Sam Forsythe was priced at $7,800. North Carolina; and Brenda Daniels from Alabama. These are just a few and of course, many New England dealers showcase at Arion’s show as well.
Cheryl Mackley of Red Lion, Pa., asked $5,600 for her large and unusual Santa candy container. The small Santa was $2,500; and the camel, $565. This 5.75-inch diameter Pennsylvania redware plate decorated with three houses and green slip splotches in between double yellow slip marks was priced at $19,500 from Jim and Nancy Glazer of Bailey Island, Maine. It was once in the Bill Koch collection. Newcastle, Maine dealers Butch Berdan and Tom Jewett exhibit at all four shows in York (Bob Bockius’s Greater York Show runs twice a year and Melvin Arion’s Original York Show runs twice a year). Like many full-time dealers today they network and expand the scope of their business in innovative ways. Jewett/Berdan use social media at shows. “I enjoy posting booth shots and also individual items on Facebook. It’s just another tool in the tool chest in order to sell things. We usually sell stuff that way and receive a good reaction, mostly from folks who cannot make it to the actual show. I think more and more dealers do it,” said Jewett following the show. “We were pleased!” “I think it went well. The first day was good and a lot of people were in on Saturday. Not the ordinary Saturday crowd either, I sold things to people I have never seen or met. Melvin (Arion) runs the show. This is not a dealer-run show and he advertises a lot, almost fanatically,” said Greenville, Del., dealer Jim Kilvington. Arion is a true show

Derr,” the account of the Derr family as told by early 20th century collector James Spears and published in 1949. The oddly written local history book was reprinted in 1973. Scholarship has made strides since the printing of this unique family history, yet the book continues to serve a purpose telling parts of the Derr family story. For the decorative arts world, the patriarch of the family was Peter Derr (1793-1868). He was a multitalented metalsmith/craftsman from the “Summer Hills” region of New Schaefferstown, near Bernville, in Berks County, Pa. The region today remains a rural Pennsylvania German enclave. Spears was obsessed by all things Derr and amassed a trove of material made by or used by Derr. The distinctive coffee pot with heavy punch tulip decoration in the book was attributed to Peter Derr with the punchwork itself attributed to his brother-inlaw Jacob Schade. It is believed Spears bought the coffee pot from a descendant in the Derr family in 1945. It sold at Pennypackers in 1963 when Spear’s wife, Sallie Spears, sold a portion of the collection. Sallie Spears had a sale through Pennypackers in ‘61, ‘62, and ‘63. Midwestern collector Dr. George Compton owned the coffeepot and Forsythe bought it privately from the late collector’s daughter, who lives in Arizona. Forsythe also had an undated very similiar coffee pot marked $3,900. It had the name “E Angstad” on it. Angstad/Angstadt/Angstatt was not an uncommon name in 18th- and 19th-century Pennsylvania. Peter Angstadt (1763-1815) was a gunsmith in Rockland Township, Berks County, Pa. “I’m sure both were made by Peter (Derr) and punched by Schade,” said Forsythe. Rich Mellin of Mellin’s Antiques in Redding, Conn., had a booth to sell and sign his book “Collecting Canton: In Pursuit of the Best.” Mellin, along with his wife, Gail, and
promotor and manager in the context that he values the importance of investing in his business through aggressive advertising. There is possibly no other show promoter who advertises as extensively as Arion. “I think the dealers know that I do my job,” stated Arion following the show. “I did very well. I thought setup was active as well. I sold smalls and four pieces of furniture all under $1,000 each,” said John Chaski of Camden, Del. Chaski’s business partner Matt Greig also exhibited at the show. The two, along with Mike McShane, co-own a shop titled Nassau Antiques in Lewes, Del. Jamie Price of Carlisle, Pa., sold a Lancaster County, Pa., cherry shrank with arched sunken panels, three Pennsylvania tall-case clocks, a Virginia walnut corner cupboard, three Chippendale side chairs, a tilt-top tea table, a cast iron stove plate, and several rugs. Yeagertown, Pa., dealer Bob Conrad sold a rare, miniature, green painted Weber box to an advanced collector on opening day. An unsual Pennsylvania German punch decorated dome-top coffee pot with gooseneck handle attributed This large mounted hooked rug of a to metalsmith Peter Derr of horse in profile dated “Jan. 30, 1934” Berks County, Pa., was priced was $1,650 from Newcastle, Maine at $7,800 in the booth of Columbus, Ohio dealer Sam dealers Jewett/Berdan. Forsythe. It was dated “1848” and, according to the dealer, Milton, Del., dealer Matt Greig priced illustrated in “The House of this tramp art mirror reading “God Bless Our Home” at $545.
Van Tassel - Baumann of Malvern, Pa., asked $5,500 for the framed ladies pockets in center, the paint decorated chest was $1,200, and the leather covered basket “ML 1863” was $1,800.
Rich Mellin (along with Gail Mellin) were signing and selling their book “Collecting Canton: In Pursuit of the Best.” their daughter, Erica, wrote the limited edition book which catalogs 92 forms of Canton china and serves as an excellent resource for anyone wishing to study Canton. The photos and captions show just a fragment of the quality and diverse material found at this popular semiannual event. Hungarian ceramicist, Morvay Zsuzsa’s work is characterized by a signature blue green color and figural compositions depicting objects and people. In 1959, Zotan Veress created the process of decorative veiled glass in his Hungarian glass factory. One of his pieces is included in London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. Antonia Zombori will be attending the auction, at which that time she will be personally signing her black pottery artwork. This will be her last public appearance before she returns home to Hungary. For additional information, call 215-237-4499 or visit www.HugeSilentAuction.com.

Treasure Hunter’s Silent Auction House is auctioning the art collection of Hungarian artist, Antonia Zombori, on Saturday, Feb. 27. The company is located at 317 East Penn Avenue in Robesonia, Berks County, Pa. The auction will begin at noon and doors will open at 10 a.m. To preview the collection, or place an absentee bid, the company will be open on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 25 and 26, from noon to 8 p.m. After mastering the craft of Black Pottery in her native Hungary, Zombori came to the U.S. to do this special art form. Treasure Hunter’s will be auctioning her personal collection of art, which will include her black pottery, a collection of Cameo glass by Zoltan Acs, a collection of decorative ceramics by Morvay Zsuzsa, and decorative veiled glass by Zotan Veress. World famous artist Zoltan Acs perfected the nearly forgotten technique of layering transparent and opaque glass and then etching designs known as Cameo glass.

Charles Green is the director of the Asheford Institute and recently celebrated the school’s 50th anniversary. traveling roadshow to commemorate the school’s 50th anniversary. Plans reportedly include tours of major antique events and shows throughout North America, and will incorporate free appraisal clinics, business seminars and evaluations to mark the Institute’s anniversary. “We really want to give something back to our students and those interested in antiques, said Peter Green, “It’s been a great privilege to teach so many. It’s just our way of saying thanks. Exact dates for upcoming events have yet to be released, but are expected to be announced later this month, according to school spokesperson Pamela Drew. While not quite considered an “antique just yet, the Asheford Institute of Antiques, a professional-level distance learning program on antiques, collectibles, and appraising, turned 50 this past week, marking a milestone in antiques and appraising education, as the longest running institute of its kind. Although the school premiered its home-study program to the antiques world in late 1965, it didn’t officially open its doors to students until 1966. “We’ve seen an awful lot of changes since our inception, said Peter Green, the Institute’s original founder. Green, who started the school based on the notion that there was a need for antique and appraisal education, said he could hardly believe how the antique and appraisal services market had grown over the past 50 years. “I can remember when antique stores were hard to find. Now you can tap your phone and find virtually anything instantly! During the 1980s, Green’s son, Charles took over the day-to-day operations of Asheford, and is the school’s current director. When asked what he thought represented the Institute’s high-water mark over the past 50 years, Green unabashedly responded that the introduction of the school’s new online e-Course earlier this year was a game-changer for antique and appraisal education in general. “The e-Course allowed us to bring a half-century worth of teaching expertise to a new and expanded format, said Charles Green. “With the ability to use online interactive multimedia for instruction, we’ve really been able to raise the bar in antiques and appraising education for our students. Green went on to say that although online instruction had obviously become the new norm, the “textbook version would still be offered for a number of years to come. According to a press statement, as part of the school’s year-long celebration, staff from the Institute will also participate in a

Morphy Auctions’ March Premier Toy, Doll, and Figural Cast Iron Sale Spring is just around the corner, and so is Morphy Auctions’ first premier toy sale of 2016. This Friday and Saturday, March 4 and 5 event will again prove why enthusiasts turn to Morphy’s when they want to add something truly special to their collections. All items from this sale are currently on display in Morphy’s auction gallery and available for preview. This auction rolls out with over 60 choice lots of magnificent marbles. Lot 6, a rare shrunken core onionskin with floating mica panels (est. $8,000-$12,000); and Lot 7, a rare open panel onionskin with a mica core, est. $3,000$5,000, just may bring collectors to tears. And there is certain to be much interest in Lot 13, a rare large two color banded lutz marble, est. $2,000-$4,000. This big beauty, with a wet appearance and bands of mint green and blue, is the first our catalogers have seen in this configuration. It’s next off to the races with a selection of almost 40 vintage tin litho Japanese toys, many with car, motorcycle, and other transport themes. Lot 324, a 19-inch Japanese Friction Champion’s race car, and Lot 327, a 11.5-inch Japanese Friction Haji Ford Sunliner convertible are the wheel-deal indeed. Both come
with their original boxes and are estimated at $3,000$6,000 each. Another highlight worthy of a crown would be Lot 333, a Rare Japanese Friction tin litho Imperial auto with its original box. This highly desirable example, one of the premier Japanese cars ever made, is estimated at $8,000$12,000. Robots are a popular collector’s category, and this sale offers over 20 out-of-thisworld selections. One highlight would have to be Lot 352, a scarce Japanese Battery Op. R.C. Change Man robot with its original box (est. $3,000$6,000). It is the second most detailed of the Change Man versions and features a detailed head and an intricate mechanism. This mechanical marvel is considered a prototype, as the design was never sold to the public. This sale also builds momentum with a selection of sought after erector sets. Lot 464, a Gilbert 1929 No. 9 erector mechanical wonders set one of only a few boxed sets known - and Lot 470, Gilbert 1929 No.10 erector set, a multilayer set with removable parts trays, are both mechanical marvels and estimated at $4,000$8,000 each. And collectors will have no trouble constructing
interest in Lot 478, a Gilbert 1927 Set No. 8 erector trumodel set. This highly collectible example includes its original early decaled wooden box and is estimated at $2,000$4,000. It’s hard to put a price on this event’s playful selection of 70 lots of extraordinary Fisher Price toy selections. All are from The outstanding large onionskin with blizzard mica is estimated at $8,000-$12,000. private collections and are fresh to the market. Lot 132, a rare Fisher Price No. 1054 color boxes set, including six different colored cylinders with matching top lids and balls, is a happy handful at $1,000-$1,500. And Lots 103, a Fisher Price paper on wood No. 195 teddy bear drumming pair, and 107, a fantastic
A rare large two color banded lutz marble is estimated at $2,000-$4,000. Fisher Price paper on wood No. 520 drummer boy, should be music to collectors’ ears. Both are estimated at $800-$1,200. No doll is more worthy of the royal treatment in this sales event than Lot 707, an all original Queen Anne doll. This 17-inch rarity is from circa 1720, and is unquestionably A Gilbert 1929 No. 9 one of the finest wooden dolls erector mechanical of its type to come to market wonders set is estimated at $4,000-$8,000.
in memory. This remarkable example is preserved in a gilt glass case and comes with a charming, period painting of her purportedly first owner. The doll comes to life with glass eyes, rosy cheeks, red lips, and a human hair wig. Most interestingly, she has writing on her silk bodice. Her wardrobe and accessories include fingerless leather gloves trimmed in blue, several layers of clothing, a quilted underskirt, a lace trimmed hat, and a pair of silk boots, as well as a perfectly scaled handkerchief and pincushion. She was purchased in England in the 1980s. This Queen Anne doll is crowned with a $40,000-$60,000 auction estimate. Dolls by Jumeau have been collector’s favorites since the late 1800s. This sale offers 19 world-class examples of these treasures in an irresistible array of sizes and presentations. Good things come in threes with this sale’s offering of First Series Portrait Jumeau Bebes. These prettyas-a-picture dolls include Lot 608, an attractive 15.5-inch Bebe with desirable almond cut eyes; Lot 713, a stunning 17-inch Bebe with tricolor glass eyes with extensive threading; and Lot 647, an exceptional 17inch Bebe with unusually attractive, traditional Jumeau facial features. All are on eight-ball jointed bodies and estimated at $6,500-$9,500 each. This sale also features many dolls with French accents, with fine examples by Steiner, Francois Gaultier,

An exceptional all original Queen Anne doll is estimated at $40,000-$60,000. SFBJ, and other makers on offer. Collectors will undoubtedly say “oui” to this auction’s three Bru selections, with the finest being Lot 649, a 16- inch Bebe with a Chevrot body and striking blue paperweight eyes. This outstanding, simply beautiful example is estimated at $5,000-$7,000. Fine dolls from Germany are also well represented in this auction. Lot 722, a rare, fully jointed turn-of-the-last century felt Steiff farmer doll has things buttoned up with his early and authentic felt outfit that is integral to his body. This farmer is quite the charmer and comes with a robust provenance - including having been discovered in the attic of an abandoned apartment building scheduled for demolition. He is estimated at $1,000-$2,000. Christmas and Halloween items, as well as candy containers, are key categories in this sale. Lucky Lot 777, a Halloween “Veggie Man On A Pumpkin” candy container, is truly the best of all worlds for collectors. This fine circa early 20th century German example

A Look At Wallace Nutting’s Floral Still Life Scenes By Michael Ivankovich Wallace Nutting was probably the most famous photographer of the early 20th century. Between 1900 and his death in 1941, his hand-colored photographs of pastoral America achieved such enormous popularity that hardly an American middle-class household was without one. He even claimed in his 1936 biography that had he sold more than 10 million pictures throughout his career. Beginning in 1897, Wallace Nutting went on to take nearly 50,000 different pictures. Most failed to meet his high standards and were destroyed and, by most estimates, only 2,500 different titles were sold commercially. Nutting would always take his own

photographs, which were developed through a glass negative onto a special platinum paper, and then colored entirely by hand by one of his “colorists.” And it is the individuality of each picture being hand-colored, and Nutting’s sense of style, perfection and taste, that helped to make his pictures so popular during the early 20th century. They were beautiful, inexpensive, and provided much of America’s growing middle class with the opportunity to decorate the walls of their homes at an affordable price. Exterior scenes are what most people associate with Wallace Nutting and they comprise the largest segment of his pictures. These include pictures of apple blossoms, birches, country lanes, streams, rivers, ponds, lakes, and fall scenes. Wallace Nutting worked out of Southbury, Conn., and Framingham, Mass. He sold a large percentage of his pictures in New England. Winters were long and cold and New Englanders generally desired pleasant, optimistic signs of the warmer weather ahead. As a result, these nice warmweather exterior scenes were his most popular and bestselling pictures and account for the largest percentage (85 percent) of Wallace Nutting pictures that may be found today. Colonial interior scenes were pictures photographed inside old houses and usually had women dressed in long dresses and bonnets performing household chores such as cooking, sewing, etc. Some were done in primitive settings, others in more formal surroundings. They included period furniture, were quite charming, and demand was

Wallace Nutting Continued from page 14
and, on three trips abroad between 1904-25, he took pictures in 16 different countries, mainly throughout Europe, notably England and Ireland and also the Mediterranean region. Foreign scenes often included bridges, castles, cathedrals, churches, cottages, gardens, landscapes, and other similar subjects. Miscellaneous unusual scenes are basically any Wallace Nutting pictures that don’t fit into the above three categories, including animals, children, gardens, men, people, seascapes, and snow scenes. All foreign and miscellaneous unusual topics combined account for less than 5 percent of all Wallace Nutting pictures. The peak of Wallace Nutting picture popularity was between the years 1915-25. However no fad lasts forever and people eventually began to tire of them. And as Nutting’s picture business was
declining during the 1930s, he began seeking other subject areas into which he could expand. In an attempt to cater to the growing Women’s Garden Club movement, one such area that he introduced was the “Floral Still Life” scene. “Florals” were close-up pictures of flowers in vases or bowls, usually arranged by Mrs. Nutting, and became somewhat popular. We wouldn’t describe Nutting’s “Florals” as rare, but since they were sold for only a few years (1930-40), during the poor-selling economic hardship depression years of the 1930s, relatively few were actually sold and floral still lifes are generally considered “unusual, but not rare” by most Nutting collectors. And because they don’t look anything like a typical Wallace Nutting picture, they are often overlooked by antiques and collectibles dealers. Hence, bargains are out there - if you know what to
