The Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association Holds Successful 67th Annual Conference And Show 300 N early apprentices,

auctioneers, auction students, support personnel, vendors, presenters, and guests attended and participated in the 67th annual conference and trade show of the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association (PAA) on Jan. 13 through 16 at the Sheraton Harrisburg-Hershey. The 2014 PAA president Mark L. Ferry of Latrobe, Westmoreland County, described the event as a huge success, and

all who attended the event left with valuable information to guide them in their businesses. The 2015 PAA conference chair Patrick K. Morgan of New Holland, Lancaster County, noted that during the 67th annual conference it was a great pleasure to have so many returning, as well as first-time attendees, taking the opportunity to enhance and build their auction business and knowledge. He noted that there were more vendors than ever before, bringing the best technology, tools,

equipment, and marketing available in today’s advanced and competitive market place. Conference participants had a choice of 19 educational seminars during the course of the event. Individuals learned skills that will allow them to better serve their buyers and sellers. Continuing education units were available to auctioneers to maintain advanced auctioneer certifications or auctioneer licenses held in other states requiring education. Morgan stated that the PAA hosted a wide range of diverse seminars by various industry leaders, including the National Auctioneers Association president Tom Saturley, past president of the National Auto Auction Association Charlotte Pyle, and representatives from the PA Game Commission, as well as attorney George Michak, Dr. Fredrick J. Sylvester, Russ Hilk, Greg Magnus, Bob Lucas, Larry Harb, Bruce Bazelon, Dr. N. Sanford Good, George Howley, and others. Also, a first-time-ever free early bird seminar was held the evening of Jan. 13, which featured C. Ivan Stoltzfus, who traveled across the country on his John This is the 2015 Auctioneer Champion Jeff Pennington (left) with last Deere tractor to raise funds for the year’s winner Patrick Morgan (right). Wounded Warrior Project. The PAA’s keynote speaker was nationally recognized David Barton, “America’s Historian.” Attendees enjoyed a presentation titled “American Exceptionalism.” Several Pennsylvania auctioneers came up winners during the 2015 PA Auctioneer Competition. Jeffery T. Pennington of New Castle, Lawrence County, garnered the prestigious “Pennsylvania Auctioneer Champion” award on Jan. 14 at the Pennsylvania State Farm Show, the largest indoor agricultural exhibition in the nation. He competed against 22 other auctioneers in a competition to be the best bid caller and auctioneer in the state, as well as for the top prize of cash, a prestigious silver trophy, and paid registration to the International Auctioneer The Pennsylvania Auctioneers Championship set for July 2015 in

Addison, Texas. The runner-up in the competition was Michael F. Dilliard of Centre Hall, Centre County. The PAA also named a “Rookie Auctioneer Champion,” an individual who has been licensed as an auctioneer for less than two years. This honor was bestowed on Nolan Richard Bell of Beaver Falls, Beaver County. The auctioneers were judged by a panel of eight judges on their bid calling ability, overall presentation, speech, appearance, and salesmanship. For

the second year, the judging panel implemented judging software, which was created especially for the PAA by Montgomery County specialist Alan Impink. A portion of the proceeds from the contest and benefit auction went to the Farm Show Scholarship Fund to support students entering the agricultural field. Members of the Northwest Chapter of the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association spent an entire year (Continued on page 2)

Antiques Of Distinction Will Shine At The Winter Morristown Armory Antiques Show On Feb. 28 And March 1

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: How Has The Net Changed The Market, Part One

Peter Swift Seibert

Some years ago, I used to teach a class in popular culture for college students. One of the questions that I asked every class was how much did they shop online compared to store buying? Even back in 2009, my students categorically stated that they would buy everything, except food, online over shopping face-to-face. It is clear that online shopping is the way that as a nation and as a world individuals spend money. The antiques trade has not been super fast to embrace technology as a vehicle for the buying and selling of antiques. About 10 years ago, I remember talking to a good friend who is an auctioneer and hated the Internet. Today, close to 60 percent of his sales are to online buyers. Similarly, I recall a group of collectors saying that they

would never buy anything from an online antiques vendor. Today, two of those collectors are now dealing solely online. I think this has been very healthy for the antiques trade. Ebay has shaken the market to the quick, showing us what is rare and what is not. The world marketplace has shown us that things that were “limited editions” are in fact as common as you can imagine. It has shaken up the postcard, modern first editions, and ephemera markets considerably. Now don’t get me wrong, I do think the Internet has harmed some aspects of the antiques trade. Online published books and databases, along with the abundance of online vintage bookstores and auctions, have really exacerbated the death of the used antiquarian bookstore. The counterpoint is that it is about getting the information out to the public so I do not totally mourn unlimited Internet access for information. But I do miss the sight, smell and fun of rooting in an antiquarian bookstore. I think individual dealers have not always benefited from the Internet. I recall when I first posted merchandise online. It took me hours and tons of writing and

photography to get it up. And then in the next several months, I only sold a handful of items. When I factored in the time and energy to get the web store up and running, I realized that I was losing money. That experience, I suspect, is not unique to me. However, today I also follow several online military dealers, and there is a definite rush to buy from them when they post new listings. It is so bad that they have had to publish big and bold statements about who gets first dibs when they post an online catalog. So it is clear the Internet buying of antiques is a mixed bag, with some doing super well and others not attracting much notice. I do have to address in all of this the readers who believe that the Internet is like eight-track tapes or Beta videocassettes, mainly that it is a “flash in the pan” and will never last. Well, with decades behind us, I think that the Internet is a phenomenon that will be here forever. Burying your head in the sand will only result in your getting kicked in the backside. In my next column, some thoughts on how the Internet is allowing messages and advertisements to be directed to the right buyer.

Over 100 prominent antiques dealers will fill the Morristown Armory on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 28 and March 1, with everything from the finest antique furniture to fine art, collectibles, and much more. Featuring collections and individual pieces from around the world, this twoday event will offer everyone, from the serious collector to interior designers, as well as the casual devotee of the finer things in life, a world of historic art and design in furnishings and decorative objects. Among the new exhibitors who will be featured are Knollwood Antiques LLC of Thorndike, Mass., and Continental Antique Furniture from Sarasota, Fla. Recently featured in

Specializing in 17th- through 20th-century American and European art, Bill Union of Art and Antique Gallery will share his particular passion for maritime art from the finest artists.

New England Monthly Magazine, Knollwood Antiques offers highly select antique furniture spanning the mid-19th through the mid-20th century from Europe, as well as Asian and American pieces, plus a wide selection of lighting and objects of décor. The Morristown Armory Antiques Show is a decorator’s

dream weekend. In one location, the finest in furniture will be presented by Roger Winter, Zane Moss, Essex Antiquarians, White Orchid, and Arise Bazaar, to name just a few. planning and carrying out the exciting auction contest. The master of ceremonies for the evening was Northwest Chapter member and 2013 Auctioneer Champion Matthew Hostetter. The annual Fun Auction, organized by members of the PAA Southwest Chapter, was held the evening of Jan. 15 at the Sheraton, where auctioneers and guests bid on classified advertising, trips, services, antiques, and other items. This event helped to offset the overall cost of the conference. Since the auction industry is a consumer-driven industry, PAA members always strive to improve their services to the public. Paul Daugevelo and Christopher Glinton have made their careers in the antique business for the last 38 years and are the proprietors of RosAl Floral and Antiques. The pair owns and operates stores in Forest City, Hawley, and Carbondale, Pa. In the last four years, however, after deciding to broaden their scope, they turned their experience to the mounting and producing of antique shows and events in the beautiful mountain region of northeastern Pennsylvania. The two call their enterprising production company Ros-Al Floral Antiques and Events. “We ... wanted to focus our unique vision and expertise on producing quality antique shows combined with locally flavored events to give a more interesting and colorful experience to the antique market environment, said Glinton. “With the huge success of creating the annual ‘Antiques in the Park’ (event), now entering its fourth year, in addition to our Sunday summer antique events at Creekside in Lenoxville, we now have a solid background. Glinton went on to note that dealers from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, as well as Pennsylvania, participate in their shows. “We are now proud to announce that because of the overwhelming popularity of these one-day shows, we have decided to expand the 2015 schedule to offer weekend shows at an exciting new location with ‘The Great
