Glass Works Ends Final Session Of Bob Ferraro Collection On A High Note Lambertville, N.J., based Glass Works Auction held the third and final session of a mail, phone, and online bidding auction of the Bob Ferraro collection consisting of 43 bottles selling for $187,025. The sale ended Jan. 9. In total, the collection contained 141 bottles and totaled $554,675 for all three sales. Prices reported include a 15 percent buyers premium. This rare bottle in the form of a barrel embossed “Peoples Favorite Bitters / Powell & Stutenroth” sold for $34,500. “It was a small but fabulous collection,” said Jim Hagenbuch, Glass Works owner. “Collections this small in size with this caliber of bottles are very rare, with one coming on the market every 10 years or so. It took Bob 45 years to assemble this one,” said Hagenbuch. The “W & Co / N.Y.” embossed bottle in the form of a pineapple sold for $19,550. The highest price lot in the last session, and in the entire collection, was lot 114. A rare bottle in the form of a barrel embossed “Peoples Favorite Bitters / Powell & Stutenroth,” it sold for $34,500. “It is one of only three or four known examples and highly
desirable,” exclaimed Hagenbuch. “Bob acquired this one from us in 1996, when we auctioned bottles from the Carlyn Ring collection.” Tying for the second highest price paid in the auction was lot 115, a “W & Co / N.Y.” embossed bottle in the form of a pineapple, which sold for $19,550. “In this particular form - color means everything,” said Hagenbuch. “Bob loved the form and had eight different colors.” Also selling for $19,550 was lot 121, embossed “Seaworth Bitters Co / Cape May New Jersey,” and in the form of a lighthouse. “Quite a rarity, and identical in form to the present Cape May, New Jersey, lighthouse that was built in 1859 and remains in operation today,” said Hagenbuch. Lot 107, a “Highland Bitters & Scotch Tonic” embossed bottle also in the shape of a barrel, sold for $14,950. “A scarce bottle when found in amber, but very rare in this more desirable green color,” according to Hagenbuch. Coming in at number five on the highest prices realized list was lot 99, a “Brown’s Celebrated Indian Herd Bitters” in the form of an Indian

Right now, it appears that political and economic uncertainty has been trumped by the prospect of financial gain, which is good - at least for the art market and the people who participate in it.”

weights ranging from 20 to 500 PWTS. This sale also offered a cutting-edge selection of American and English Bowie knives. One rockstar in this collection was lot 55, a circa 1835 knife stamped “Schively 75 Chestnut Street Philad.” This example, one of less than two dozen known in existence, sold for $43,050. Another sterling example was lot 54, a circa 1865 silver mounted Bowie knife by Samuel Bell. This knife was more of a “fashion” accessory than a weapon, and was made for dress, not fighting. It realized $39,975. This sale rounded out with a blend of outstanding antique back bar bottles and other fine antiques. Lot 258, a circa 1890, “Fine Old Gin” labeled glass bottle featuring an attractive young woman wearing a large hat, flirted its way to $24,600. And lot 365, an all original “Wells Fargo & Co.” wooden safe box with dovetail construction and cast-iron latches, locked things up at $25,830. “This themed sale was tremendously interesting and fun to pull together. Many of the items available were absolute rarities or one-of-akind selections. Clearly, this caught the eye of buyers from not only the Western United States, but from all over the world. As with any auction, there are always a few surprises. A big one here was the blue and white Wells Fargo Express single sided porcelain sign. It realized more than 30 times its low estimate,” said Dan Morphy, president of Morphy Auctions. For further information, readers may visit www.MorphyAuctions.com.

A Ruth Erickson Grueby vase sold for $40,625.
Morphy’s recent premier Gold Rush and Native American sale offered collectors the finest opportunity to purchase “The Best of the West” at an auction event held on Jan. 19 at Morphy’s Las Vegas gallery. All prices reported include a 23 percent buyer’s premium. Antique signage and advertising materials relating to America’s expansion in the 1800s caught the attention of collectors at this sale. A bidding war erupted over lot 146, a “Battle Axe” cigar reverse glass advertising sign featuring an image of a smiling Native American and an older, well-dressed gentleman with Battle Axe tobacco. Once the smoke cleared, it eventually realized $73,800. Lot 313, an advertisement from 1898 for “California’s Golden Jubilee and Mining Fair” picturing a miner with axe slung over his shoulder and raising a large gold nugget above his head, was a heavy metal favorite at $41,820. And it was a wild ride with lot 320, a vibrantly colored “Wells Fargo Express” single-sided porcelain sign made by the B.S. Company of Chicago, Ill. Estimated at $600-$1,200, it delivered $19,680. Collector Anecdotes And Antics
If you happen to work in a modern day cubicle farm, then you most likely have encountered some very interesting things gracing your co-workers’ desks. I have often joked with associates in the collectibles trade that if you want to know what not to buy for investment, just look at what occupies a 20- or 30-something’s desk. I would venture to say that almost everyone who works in corporate America knows someone with at least one Beanie Baby filling up their cluttered work space. In competition with the quintessential Beanie Baby is a new challenger that appears to be capturing the hearts and wallets of the “millennial generation.” And make no mistake, this current craze will end just as badly. Funko was a company best known for its line of unique bobble-head toys and novelties that came out in the late 1990s. The company changed
hands in 2005 and set its sights on making deformed vinyl plastic figurines based on some of the most popular licenses in the world of pop culture. The figurines were aptly named Funko POP and became a massive hit for the company upon release. Chances are there is a line of Funko POP figurines based on your favorite pop culture franchise. Want one based on “Star Wars”? Check. How about comic book superheroes created from DC and Marvel? Check. What about “Dr. Who”? Check. Even obscure television shows and less popular licenses from years past now have a line of Funko POP figurines devoted to them. There are even limited edition figures released at conventions like the San Diego Comic Con that drive collectors bonkers and sell for hundreds of dollars on the secondary market along with so-called “rare” chase figures. Online price guides are updated regularly, and hardcore collectors scour eBay looking for rare and out-of-production figurines.
Companies even make specialty soft-plastic holders that protect the individual cardboard boxes the figures are sold in to help preserve their perceived collectible value. Funko POP figures are readily sold at novelty and specialty retailers like Barnes & Noble Booksellers and online auction sites like eBay. Even Target and Wal*Mart sell them. They retail for about $10 each, and enthusiasts are generally surprised by just how many different figures are readily available. Dedicated dealers have started “popping up” (no pun intended) at comic book and pop culture conventions as well. Meanwhile, Internet-based collecting forums are active with discussions from diehard collectors and pessimists who routinely argue that the figures are destined for the landfill just like the Beanie Baby boom from the 1990s. Sadly, some of these collectors fail to see the obvious comparisons and instead incorrectly argue that since the items are based on various pop
enthusiasts are typically under the age of 30 and have yet to experience any true speculative bubbles like that of Beanie Babies. Almost anyone who lived through the rise and fall of Beanie Babies, and to a lesser extent the Hummel Figurines craze, should already know what to expect from the future of the Funko POP secondary market. Sadly, Funko continues to release more and more new figurines at a record pace. The company shows no signs of slowing down. Meanwhile, retailers are already awash in stacks of various figurines. Some stores have already
started to clear out a large portion of their unsold stock at a massive discount. I have personally seen these same figurines from popular franchises like “Star Wars” and DC Comics being cleared out at big box stores for less than $3 each. This doesn’t bode well for the long-term value of this fad. The bottom line is if you enjoy these for what they are and want a simple novelty based on your favorite pop culture icon, feel free to buy one or two. Just don’t don’t go thinking that the majority of these will ever be worth more than their original retail price in the long-term.

culture franchises they will have long-lasting appeal. In the interest of full disclosure, I will never own a single Funko POP figure. I personally do not like them and see them as nothing more than a glorified speculative bubble whose time will surely pass sooner rather than later. To be fair, I really don’t like them, even as a novelty, and would rather place my money in more lucrative collectibles that I know will have a much better track record than a pop culture novelty with no purpose. Seeing various collectors show me dozens of these boxed figurines at a price of about $10 per figure is enough to make anyone cringe. I still have horrifying flashbacks to finding massive piles of Beanie Babies at flea markets and antique centers being sold for less than a dollar a piece. Even more worrisome than the critics who buy them just because they like them is the fact that there are a growing number of diehard enthusiasts who think these will make an excellent financial investment in the years to come. Ironically, most of these

Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates Hires Consignment Manager Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates is pleased to announce that Janice Hannah has recently accepted the position of consignment manager. In her position, Hannah will be responsible for overall consignments and client cultivation. Hannah comes to the Jeffrey S. Evans team from nearly six years as chief officer of major gifts with the Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation. Her responsibilities included marketing and promotion, fundraising, event planning, major gift cultivation and overall development. Outside her current responsibilities, Hannah, with a devotion to
community awareness and the preservation of the valley’s historic heritage, serves on the New Market Our Town Development Committee and is a member of the New Market Women’s Memorial Society. Hannah has long had a fascination with antiques and collectibles, especially those relating to folk art, and sees this union as a perfect pairing. “I am very excited about this career change, said Hannah. “It affords me the opportunity to create firm relational foundations with prominent collectors and promote multinational associations, thereby linking the Shenandoah Valley’s history with museums and collectors worldwide.

echo a similar sentiment but indicated that there were other areas of the market that are beginning to show signs of renewed interest, particularly in the area of Greek and Egyptian revival styles - especially when done in stone and marble. Claude Paquin, a longtime dealer from Quebec, said some of his Victorian marble-top side tables, which hadn’t moved in years, were suddenly flying out the door. “Who knows, maybe it’s the beginning of something old,” said Paquin. measure the interest in current trends of antiques and collectibles, based on actual sales results and requests for specific items. Jackson noted that while the survey was informal in nature and not predicated on scientific formulas, the results were still quite compelling when viewed in their entirety. “What we’re seeing is a strong change in direction when it comes to certain areas of the decorative arts,” said Jackson. “It’s not just Mid-Century Modern that’s moving, but a number of other areas that are also making up ground.” Jackson went on to note that interest in 1960s and ’70s collectibles, particularly space and “Star Wars” related items, had also risen sharply as well. “There’s no doubt in my mind that these are the new, younger collectors that we’re seeing today,” said Jackson. “They’re the ones who are really beginning to drive the industry forward.” Aside from the popularity of Mid-Century Modern furniture, many of the younger dealers from the survey also noted that literally anything 20th century, from brutalist metal sculptures to lesserknown painters had also become increasingly sought after by both dealers and collectors. “We’re in a virtual bidding war every time something from this era comes up,” said Shannon Smith, a young East Coast dealer. Older dealers seemed to

The latest results from the Asheford Institute of Antiques’ survey of buying trends within the antiques and collectibles community were recently published online by the school’s Research and Polling Department. After conducting similar surveys over the past five years, the internationally recognized home-study school on antiques, collectibles and appraising released its latest trending data from the antiques marketplace for 2016. The survey, which concentrated on compiling and grouping information related to customers’ buying habits over this 12-month period, was brought back this year after a strong response on the school’s website from readers requesting updates from previous surveys, said current director of the institute, Charles Green. Green noted that there were interesting differences between the results from this poll and those from previous years. “We’ve made our questionnaire sharper, and more specific, as well as bringing the participant base up to over 1,200 respondents, but the questions are still essentially the same,” said Green, “even though the answers are quite different.” Carlee Jackson, the school’s public relations director, agreed with Green’s assessment and stated that the main goal of this year’s survey was to once again

“From Homer To Hopper: Experiment And Ingenuity In American Art”
the artistic innovators of the past, the exhibition begins with Romanticism and Realism. This section includes late 19th-century artists such as romantic painters George Inness and Albert Pinkham Ryder and innovative realist painters Winslow Homer and Thomas Eakins, whom Phillips viewed as America’s modern “old masters” who looked for alternatives to the prevalent art idioms of their time. A witness to the heroism of mariners along the coast of Maine, Homer succinctly captured man’s universal struggle against nature in works such as “To the Rescue” (1886) by distilling key elements to their most compelling components. Impressionism reveals the impact of French Impressionism on Childe Hassam, Theodore Robinson, John Henry Twachtman, and Julian Alden Weir. Adopting the spirit rather than the letter of the French model, American artists took up painting en plein air and applying pure unmixed color in dabs and
Stuart Davis’s (1892-1964) “Egg Beater No. 4,” 1928, oil-on-canvas, 27 1/8-by-38.25 inches from The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C., was acquired in 1939. Copyright of the estate of Stuart Davis/Licensed by VAGA, New York, N.Y.
and gallerist Alfred Stieglitz and inspired by the theories of Wassily Kandinsky, these American artists pared away surface realism and context using color, line, and form to express the inner essence of things and their connection with nature. Escaping urban centers for rural New England, Long Island, and the austere desert landscape of New Mexico, these artists distilled landscapes into their basic geometric forms, using emotive color and modulated tones, as in Arthur Dove’s painting “Red Sun” (1935). Modern Life features works created during the early decades of the 20th century that reflect the impact of industrialization on American life. In their paintings, George Bellows, Guy Pène du Bois, and Edward Hopper delineated a new undercurrent of tension and disquiet in American life. In “Sunday” (1926), Hopper isolates a shopkeeper on an empty street lined by buildings with vacant windows. His use of acidic colors heightens the sense of dislocation and alienation. The City presents works by artists who embraced the new face of urban America through its architecture, engineering, and industry. Charles Sheeler, Ralston Crawford, and Stefan Hirsch analyzed and translated structural forms in the urban landscape into abstract precisionist designs. They abandoned modulated form,

Marsden Hartley’s (1877-1943) “Mountain Lake - Autumn,” circa 1910, oil-on-academy board, 12-by12 inches, was a gift of Rockwell Kent in 1926 to The Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.

Collection was the first museum to give living artists solo exhibitions, and Duncan Phillips’ support for American artists through acquisitions, commissions, exhibitions, and financial stipends was a critical factor in the careers of many. The exhibition presents a thematic chronological journey outlining Duncan Phillips’s broad collecting interests and major developments in American art. In recognition of the important connections between modern artists and
the immigrant experience in America. Their social realism, a blend of representation and abstraction, vividly captured the physical reality and emotional tenor of the country’s poor and oppressed. A leader in this movement was Jacob Lawrence, whose series “The Life of Toussaint L’Ouverture” (1937-38), translated into silkscreen prints that appear in this exhibition, were his first works dedicated to the depiction of black life and history. Awareness of the broadening ethnicity of the country’s population also brought increased attention to American folk traditions in art. The exhibition’s paintings by Doris Lee, John

preferring to organize their urban imagery into simple lines, flat geometric shapes, and repeating patterns, using neutral tones shocked with red and yellow and sharp contrasts between black and white to convey the scale, weight, and distance of structures. Eliminating people and nature from their paintings, these American modernists portrayed a dual message about the triumph and eclipse of man in the modern age. Memory and Identity brings together works by Horace Pippin, Jacob Lawrence, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Allan Rohan Crite, and others who painted the unique voice of non-white communities and

expressive brushstrokes even as they favored a more silvery palette and a reluctance to dissolve form with color. Their subjects were those of their French counterparts - people at leisure or strolling down elegant city avenues, American life painted with a sparkling sense of light, color, and atmosphere. In the 20th century, several artists moved away from the influence of Impressionism and its heightened use of light, color, and texture. Forces in Nature presents a new kind of expressive realism in paintings by Rockwell Kent, Marsden Hartley, John Marin, and others who were enthralled by rugged, remote locales untouched by modern civilization. These American modernists chose to explore dramatic and remote landscapes in isolation to convey a personal sense of place through their paintings. They intuitively grasped nature’s raw elemental power and met it head on. In the aftermath of World War I, another group of American artists looked for meaning through a spiritual interpretation of nature. Nature and Abstraction showcases the works of Arthur Dove, John Marin, and Georgia O’Keeffe, who were among the first wave of artists in the United States to work in a conceptual rather than representational mode of art. The exhibition, “From Homer to Hopper: Experiment and Ingenuity in American Art,” at the Brandywine River Museum of Art reflects the rich diversity of style and expression in American art created between 1870 and 1950. Fiftyfour superb paintings by Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, Thomas Eakins, Marsden Hartley, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Jacob Lawrence, Georgia O’Keeffe, Horace Pippin, Maurice Prendergast, John Sloan, and many others that reflect that rich diversity of style and expression are on view. “From Homer to Hopper: Experiment and Ingenuity in American Art” is organized by The Phillips Collection in Washington, D.C., and traces the course of American modernism in the works of these artists - from the bold, investigative realism of Winslow Homer and Thomas Eakins at the end of the 19th century to the reductive views and psychological insights of Edward Hopper and Morris Graves at the mid-20th century. The Phillips Collection, founded in 1918 by Duncan Phillips and opened in the Phillips family home in 1921, has always championed modernism and the rich diversity of America’s talented artists. Phillips formed his groundbreaking collection with a strong emphasis on works by artists whose critical thinking and creative originality raised American art out of relative obscurity. He challenged the perceived superiority of European over American art and sought works by women, artists of color, and native and foreign-born artists, as well as those who were self-taught, so that the collection represented a “fusion of various sensitivities” and a “unification of differences” that would parallel the multicultural character of the nation. New Collectors Drive Successful Antiquities, Asian, And Ethnographic Art Auction
An oversize Apulian (Magna Gaecia, southern Italy) red-figure amphora, 39 inches high, ex. Royal Athena Gallery, New York, sold for $43,020. replicates a jaguar’s paw, with pointy turquoise claws and a double-headed serpent design around the wrist. Estimated at $2,500-$3,500, it opened at $1,200 and was hotly pursued to $13,145. Also reaching $13,145 was a plaster mummy bust of a young man from the RomanoEgyptian period, 1st century BCE to 1st century CE. Impressively sized (15.75-inches high), the artwork would have been created as a funerary monument for an elite individual. To the Roman

viewer, its sensitively molded facial features might have suggested a similarity to a youthful God, perhaps Apollo. One of the most frequently viewed items in the online catalog was an Egyptian Middle Kingdom tomb model of plaster and wood depicting a brewery and bakery, with figures of two men sealing beer jars and a third figure kneading dough. Formerly held in a New York private collection, the ancient relic was claimed by a new owner for $7,170. Other significant Egyptian lots included a circa 323-31 CE Hellenistic pottery roundel with a bas-relief image of a classical deity, possibly Athena, $5,975 (est. $1,500$2,500), and a circa 715-330 BCE wood sarcophagus panel painted with the image of the goddess Nut, selling for $10,456. The top lot of the sale was a 39-inch-high Apulian (Magna Graecia, southern Italy) red-figure amphora dating to circa 330-300 BCE and attributed to A.D. Trendall’s Virginia exhibition painter. Profusely decorated with rival warriors, one on horseback, a female bust, floral elements and other fine iconography, this vessel would have been “a highly prized piece throughout the classical world,” said Dodge. It sold for $43,020. The highly select offering of Asian art was led by a late19th-century CE Tibetan giltbronze sculptural tableau of citipati – male and female skeletal protector deities who dance wildly within a halo of flames. The object of fierce bidding, the lot sold for $11,355. Also noteworthy among

Standing on a small
plinth and adorned with a wealth of necklaces, bracelets, anklets, earrings and a regal headdress, the fastidiously detailed figure was created in a manner that would make it visually interesting from all angles. Estimated at $2,000-$3,000, it rose to $5,079. Another category that drew an active, multinational bidding contingent was ancient jewelry. Among the highlights were a museumquality Viking silver chain with an amulet shaped as Thor’s Hammer, $5,378, and a Roman 14-carat gold ring with a garnet intaglio of Minerva, which sold for $2,689. Artemis Gallery welcomed a contingent of new collectors to its Jan. 18 and 19 auction of classical antiquities and Asian, Pre-Columbian and ethnographic art. The 454-lot sale was the second-best in the company’s history, both in terms of the monetary total and the number of items sold, and achieved a 65 percent sell-through rate. “Sixty-five percent is a very high sell-through rate for categories that are so specialized. We were absolutely amazed that there was so much interest across the board and that there were so many new bidders,” said Artemis Gallery executive director Teresa Dodge. “I think much of this can be attributed to our reputation for scrupulous research and our ironclad guarantee that everything we sell is authentic and unquestionably legal to purchase.” Dodge also pointed out that the vast majority of items in the sale came with distinguished private or museum provenance, which she said “instills bidder confidence.” Pre-Columbian collectors pounced on an extremely rare human-bone carving from the Chavin culture of northern coastal Peru. Antiques Appraisals 101 Plan For Your Stuff By Andrew Richmond I thought it would be worthwhile to take a short break from the planning process to delve into what I think is among the most important aspects of good planning - having a realistic sense of the value of your stuff. The reason one word in that last sentence is in bold and italics is because, frankly, it is the most important word I’ve written thus far in this column. Realistic values are good data that can help you plan, while any other kind of value is at best useless, but at worst detrimental to the process. Let’s be clear here: what you paid in 1989, what your 1997 insurance appraisal says, and what the appraiser on the “Antiques Roadshow” said about an item just like yours have absolutely no bearing on your item’s value in today’s marketplace. I said
this before, but it is worth repeating. It’s a new world and a new market. So how does one get a realistic sense of the value of their stuff? You do-it-yourselfers can certainly utilize the online auction platforms’ archives (Invaluable, BidSquare, etc.) or one of the subscription-based databases (Prices4Antiques, AskArt, etc.). But for many folks, hiring an appraiser is the favored choice for ascertaining value. If you are considering this route, let me, a professional appraiser, be honest about something: qualified appraisers are not cheap. Depending on where you live and the specialty knowledge required, the market rate for an appraiser is likely to be at least $125 per hour, and perhaps more than $400 per hour (and the hours can quickly add up for a large collection). Please keep in mind, you are (or should be) hiring a qualified, trained

In short, certification is 20th-century art expert to not merely a hoop through appraise your 18th-century which an appraiser must jump, but an integral part of being a professional. The “Big Three” organizations to which I refer are the
American furniture. Ask any candidate appraiser about their expertise and experience. Don’t be afraid to ask to see a copy of a relevant appraisal or for references from past clients. If you are choosing to hire an appraiser, then treat the process like the job interview it is. But perhaps you don’t want or feel a need for a full, formal appraisal. How can you get some assistance in acquiring a realistic sense of value? You might ask qualified appraisers if they offer other services that might be less expensive and that fit your needs (you might even find an appraiser who can offer useful commentary on planning for the sale of your collection as well). And, of course, you can always talk to dealers and auctioneers with whom you have a good relationship. While they may not be certified appraisers, they are likely very knowledgeable about the marketplace. You should be
up-front and very clear with them that you are wanting help with values only and that your items are not for sale, and reinforce this by insisting on paying them for their time. Just keep in mind that the values given by any non-appraiser (whether written down or not) should be considered informal and for informational purposes only (in other words, don’t use those numbers for insurance values or on your tax returns if you donate something). Whether you go with the professional route and hire a qualified appraiser, or you go the informal route, familiarizing yourself with today’s marketplace and how your stuff fits in is a crucial step in the planning process. Given the upheaval the market has experienced in recent years, such information is more important than ever. To paraphrase Benjamin Franklin: by failing to prepare yourself, you are preparing for your stuff to fail.

Brandywine River Museum Kane, and Grandma Moses demonstrate their interest in simplified descriptive views that capture the day-to-day rituals of rural and small-town life in America. Legacy of Cubism highlights artists working in the 1920s and 1930s - Stuart Davis, John Graham, Karl Knaths, George L. K. Morris, and Bradley Walker Tomlin - who identified with the ideals of Cubism. Sale Will Take Place At Brooklyn Bowl In New York City On March 14 For millions of passionate Grateful Dead fans, there is only one “Wolf” - Jerry Garcia’s beloved guitar. Custom made by luthier Doug Irwin, Wolf was delivered to Jerry and first appeared in a 1973 New York City performance the Grateful Dead gave for the Hell’s Angels. Over the following two decades, Wolf became almost as well known as the performer himself, as it appeared in countless concerts and on treasured recordings throughout Garcia’s career. Years after the musician’s passing, the guitar returned to Irwin and was sold in a 2002 Guernsey’s auction conducted at New York City’s Studio 54, where it fetched close to $1 million, more than doubling the existing world record. Now, it’s buyer, wishing to support
the efforts of the Southern Poverty Law Center, has returned “Wolf” to Guernsey’s for an unprecedented one-lot auction of this most treasured guitar. Every penny of the amount bid on this instrument will go to the SPLC. This Guernsey’s event, additionally supported by the Relix Group, will be held on Tuesday, March 14, live at the Brooklyn Bowl in New York City. From San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom to NYC’s Palladium to Egypt’s Great Pyramids, Garcia and “Wolf” travelled, appearing in front of massive audiences. It is no wonder that the devoted Deadhead who purchased the “Wolf” in 2002 has stated, “I’ve been a fan of The Dead since I was a kid, and playing this iconic guitar
over the past 15 years has been a privilege. But the time is right for ‘Wolf’ to do some good. My wife and I have long supported the efforts of the Southern
Poverty Law Center, and if ever we needed the SPLC, we sure do need them now.” For further information, call 212-794-2280 or visit www.guernseys.com.

representational styles, American artists braved overt criticism of their experimentation with Cubism’s new ideas about the order and balance of objects in space. In the final section, Degrees of Abstraction, Arthur Dove, Morris Graves, Marsden Hartley, and Theodoros Stamos took abstraction beyond Cubism. They explored ideas about philosophy, mathematics, science, religion, and music as influences for their art. Morris Graves integrated Far Eastern philosophies such as Zen Buddhism and Taoism in brooding metaphorical images of plants, animals, and birds. Arthur Dove bridged the divide between Cubism and representation by keeping recognizable forms embedded within his organic, amorphous shapes. provides a unique opportunity to see and experience the stunning range of artistic innovation in the United States between 1850 and 1950. Duncan Phillips was ahead of his time in finding, fostering, and collecting works by artists who were guided by their individual visions rather than popular trends. This exhibition celebrates that achievement and the diversity and innovation of American art. The exhibition made possible through the generosity of William and Laura Buck. Sponsorship has been received from Wilmington Trust. Additional support is provided by Freeman’s. The Brandywine River Museum of Art is open daily from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day) and is located on Route 1 in Chadds Ford, Pa.
