The New-York Historical Society Will Present The Last Installment Of

“Audubon’s Aviary: The Final Flight” Exhibit Will Be On View From March 6 To May 10 his spring, the New-York Historical Society will conclude its acclaimed series of once-in-a-lifetime exhibitions celebrating the legendary John James Audubon’s original watercolor models for “The Birds of America (1827-38).” “Audubon’s Aviary: The Final Flight (Part III of The Complete Flock)” will offer an unprecedented opportunity to explore the evolution of Audubon’s dazzling watercolors in the order in which they were engraved. In this final installment of the series of three exhibitions, New-York Historical will showcase the final selection of masterpieces from its collection of Audubon’s watercolor models for the double-elephantfolio print edition of “The Birds of America.” The museum holds all 435 watercolor models for its 435 plates, engraved by Robert Havell Jr., plus an additional 39 avian watercolors of birds by Audubon. The Final Flight tracks Audubon through the final chapters of gathering the birds that had eluded him, as he also mapped new species and grappled with the latest information from expeditions to

the West. Not wishing to lose subscribers, to declare bankruptcy, or to destroy his health, Audubon accelerated his schedule and became extraordinarily inventive in completing his work. Among the more than 180 species depicted, the exhibition includes now extinct birds such as the Great Auk and endangered species like the California Condor. It ends with the American Dipper, the final Havell plate 435 of “The Birds of America,” which together with Audubon’s first watercolor model of the Wild Turkey for Havell plate 1 (shown in Part I of The Complete Flock) brackets the North American continent from coast to coast. Since Audubon never traveled west of the Missouri River, he depended on the observations and specimens gathered by early explorers of the Western territories, such as Meriwether Lewis (17741809) and William Clark (17701838), as well as the naturalists Thomas Nuttall (1809-1851) and John Kirk Townsend (1786-1859), members of the expedition led by Captain Nathaniel Wyeth (180256) to the Pacific Northwest in 1833-36. Audubon bought a sizeable number of bird skins, specimens and nests from Nuttall in 1836, and then went to Charleston, S.C., to paint many of his watercolors of Western species. He continued this work in London, where he consulted specimens of outlier species in private collections and the London Zoological Society. Curated by Dr. Roberta J.M. Olson, curator of drawings at the New-York Historical Society, the Audubon’s Aviary trilogy allows New-York Historical Society’s visitors the opportunity to view these (Continued on page 2)

one medium, and three small). Viewed in this manner, the Audubon’s Aviary series examines the struggles and decisions the artist made in order to bring his work to fruition and to successfully market it. The Final Flight Exhibition Highlights Part III of The Complete Flock will feature more than 135 Audubon avian watercolors, including 129 models for fascicles 62-87 (Havell plates 306-435) of “The Birds of America,” plus six earlier studies of several species that illustrate the development of the artist’s technique. Exhibition highlights include Audubon’s spectacular watercolor portrayals of varying species. During the winter of 1836 in Charleston, rushing to complete “Birds of America,” Audubon painted an acrobatic tableau of male and female members of the titmouse family: chestnut-backed chickadees (Poecile rufescens), bushtits (Psaltriparus minimus), and black-capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus). Only one of them, the black-capped chickadee, inhabited a part of the country that Audubon knew and he purchased the nest and skins of Western birds that he had not personally observed in nature. Positioning the birds as though drawing a single individual changing positions, the composition moves counterclockwise around the elaborate gourd-shaped hanging nest of the bushtit. The Final Flight, the swan song of the tripartite series, will feature audio birdcalls and songs of each species provided by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology to demonstrate the importance of birdsong for species identification, as well as video footage of a selection of species to underscore Audubon’s extensive field observations and the cinematic nature of his portrayals. iPads located in the exhibition galleries will feature the Havell plates for comparison with the watercolors, which reveal major departures from his watercolor models and changes in Audubon’s creative process. Monday, March 9, and Monday, April 20. On Sunday, May 3, wildlife artist and illustrator Alan Messer will lead a tour of Central Park’s wooded Ramble, discovering resident and migrating birds including colorful warblers, hummingbirds, tanagers, and thrushes. Accompanying the exhibition is the lavishly illustrated book titled “Audubon’s Aviary: The Original Watercolors for ‘The Birds of America’” by Olson, published by the New-York Historical Society and Skira/Rizzoli (2012). Support for “Audubon’s Aviary: The Final Flight (Part III of The Complete Flock)” has been provided by The Peter Jay Sharp Foundation and The Gilbert & Ildiko Butler Family Foundation. About John James Audubon John James Audubon was an artist, naturalist, and a significant historical figure who became a conservationist and the namesake of the National Audubon Society. During his lifetime Audubon was awarded many honors, including election to England’s prestigious Royal Society, the highest scientific honor of his era. He and Benjamin Franklin were the only American members until after the Civil War. Audubon is considered America’s first great watercolorist, and his ability to bring together science and art equally during the age of Romanticism reveals the range of his genius. It has only been in the last 100 years, however, that his name has become solidly linked with efforts to preserve America’s wildlife and wilderness areas. His profound avian illustrations continue to delight millions and have earned him a place in the pantheon of the world’s greatest artists. For further information, visit www.nyhistory.org.

Audubon organized his watercolor models and the corresponding Havell plates not by taxonomy, as was the tradition, but according to his judgments, including which watercolors he considered ready for engraving. He believed this order was closer to that of nature, and it was arguably more interesting for his subscribers because they received their prints in groups of five (usually one large,

SHOPS & CENTERS Collector Anecdotes And Antics

Last night I fell asleep watching “Pawn Stars” on the History Channel. In the interest of honesty it should be noted that “Pawn Stars” is one of my least favorite reality-based television shows on the antiques and collectibles trade. A lot of the interactions and antics feel somewhat scripted and corny, and if it wasn’t for the plethora of unique and interesting items that are showcased each and every week I wouldn’t even watch. Based solely on the show I have very little desire to meet the “Pawn Stars” in person. There are far more interesting collectors and enthusiasts operating within the trade that I would much rather spend time with. In the interest of full disclosure it is

For instance “Pawn Stars” has really helped bring a lot of esoteric items into the spotlight. This show alone helped catapult fringe collectibles like the much sought after Nintendo World Championship limited edition game cartridges and the ill-conceived Nintendo Virtual Boy system into the spotlight. To this day the value of these objects continues to rise, with many new collectors stating that they saw them on “Pawn Stars.” With increasing prices and mass hysteria, longtime collectors simply shake their heads as bids continue to rise on Internet auction sites like eBay. Even longtime collectors like me have to ask the question if one should sell now that speculation has taken hold. One must ask where these same collectors were when that gold Nintendo World Championship game cartridge that is now valued at $25,000 easily sold for $5,000 or less. Much like the way “Toy Hunter” helped breathe new life into vintage toys from the 1980s, speculation has

gripped the vintage advertising market, thanks in part to the infamous “American Pickers.” It should be noted that most longtime collectors and enthusiasts like me have a love and hate relationship with most of these shows. On one hand it is good that so many new collectors (and even speculators) are coming into the trade. This goes to show older generations that their prized possessions will live on in some form even after they are long gone. Personally, it is good to know that I am no longer that sole “young guy with an iPad” who likes antiques. Many more people my own age are beginning to realize just how cool antiques can be. In this aspect reality television has succeeded by leaps and bounds. Unfortunately, this has also brought with it high prices, a new generation of unknowledgeable collectors, and yet even more speculation. Most collectors under the age of 40 personally view the antiques and collectibles trade as a safe alternative to Wall Street. Assuming these new collectors actually know

worth mentioning that my top two picks would be Harry Rinker and Terry Kovel. That being said I still cannot stop watching “Pawn Stars,” and after discussing this issue with many other collectors, dealers, and enthusiasts, most agree with my sentiments in some manner or another. This article is the fourth and final entry in my series of articles regarding reality television and its impact on the antiques and collectibles trade. In my last three articles I discussed various realitybased television shows devoted to the trade and their direct impact. This entry will look at how that impact has been felt and what other enthusiasts think about it. There is no denying the fact that the average person is no longer in the dark about the possible monetary value of antiques and collectibles. Whether positive or negative the first effect all these shows had involved relaying the notion that most antiques and collectibles have some value and are highly desirable. Some niche markets have felt this impact more than others.

similar, yet broken and reglued jug was sold. It realized $8,050. English-born Richard G. Simkin (circa 1822-1868), the jug’s recipient, owned several hotels in Philadelphia, including the prominent Wetherill Hotel located on Sansom Street in close proximity to

Independence Hall. Period documents list him as “R. G. Simkin, as inscribed on this vessel. The Crocker Farm piece is a fresh-to-the-market example, purchased by the consignor approximately 20 years ago. It measures 7.5-inches to the top of the arch handle. The face is on both sides and one side possesses loss to the mouth and chin which occured in the firing process. A stoneware face vessel in pitcher form sold at Pook & Pook at the Richard and Rosemarie Machmer sale in 2008 to a Pennsylvania private collector for $81,900. It was cataloged with both a Remmey and Philadelphia attribution but is widely considered to have been made at the Greer family operation in Chester County, Pa., known as the Mount Jordan Pottery. The pitcher’s face had a more refined quality as opposed to the Crocker Farm harvest jug’s cruder, more folky execution. The harvest jug also possesses a deeper, more

Crocker Farm of Sparks, Md., will hold their next stoneware and redware pottery auction on Saturday, March 14. One of the items expected to generate considerable interest is a rare cobalt-decorated stoneware presentation harvest jug with applied faces, incised “R.G. Simkin, attributed to Henry Harrison or Richard Clinton Remmey, circa 1855-65. Few American stoneware forms are as evocative and expressive as those referrred to as “face vessels. Examples produced in the North, South, and Midwest grace the shelves of some of the finest American antiques collections in the country, and few native ceramic objects have traversed the pottery arena into the folk art realm like this captivating form. This harvest jug exhibits classic Remmey family traits, and was produced in Philadelphia by Henry Harrison Remmey or his son, Richard C. Remmey, likely prior to the latter’s ascendance to owner of the family

WDIY’s Heart Of The Valley Antiques Show Will Celebrate Its 15th Anniversary WDIY 88.1FM, Community Public Radio, is celebrating the 15th anniversary of its annual fundraiser, the Heart of the Valley Antiques Show, on Saturday and Sunday, March 7 and 8. The show will take place in the Charles Brown Ice House located at 56 River St., in the “heart” of historic Bethlehem, Pa. There will be 25 select dealers offering quality wares in the form of textiles; pottery; folk art; quilts; primitives; toys; holiday material; painted, formal and country furniture; and so much more. “When you pair what these dealers bring to exhibit with the architectural elements

of the structure, you have quite a fabulous looking space in which to browse and buy,” said Anne Bedics, the show manager and WDIY board president. Distant Past Antiques will return with a great mix of furniture and smalls, and Ivy Hill Primitives will be bringing an array of large and small quality furnishings for the country home. Others dealers will include Old Country Antiques, Blue Dog Antiques, The Cat Lady Antiques, RFD Antiques, Anderson-Breish Antiques, Michelle Colbert Antiques, Sandbrook Antiques, The Old Wood Shed, and As

Good As Old. New to the show this year will be Moss Antiques and returning will be Gisela Gruss Antiques, with the booth manned by Gruss’ daughters. These are just a few of the quality dealers who will transform this historic structure on the Lehigh River and transport the shopper back in time. For a complete list of exhibitors, go to www.wdiy.org and click on the heart. “This is one of the few antique shows with a soundtrack,” said Bedics. “After all, we are raising funds for Community Public Radio so why wouldn’t we want to enhance your shopping

experience with the strains of Ella Fitzgerald, The Beatles, big band, jazz, and a variety of music that puts you in the mood to enjoy yourself while searching for that treasure.” The Backdoor Bakeshop of Bethlehem will be selling their signature soups, sandwiches, and snacks throughout the show. Show hours will be March 7 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and March 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission will be $7 or $6 with this article or a show card. For additional information or directions, call 610588-6961 or 610-694-8100, ext. 4, or visit www.wdiy.org.

Collector Anecdotes And Antics (Continued from page 3)

what they are doing this can be true, but does getting your knowledge directly from the boob tube translate to successful buying? If anything at all, shouldn’t it lead to even more learning? When “Storage Wars” premiered in 2010 a lot of viewers were amazed at what one can find in a delinquent storage unit. And ever since that time both “picking” and “treasure hunting” have entered the lexicon of millions of viewers who regularly watch these kinds of shows, with reports of increased traffic at flea markets and yard sales. Long disregarded items like vinyl records, post-1980 comic books, classic video games, and esoteric toys are now all the rage, with most flea mar-

ket sellers reporting early morning sell-outs on most reasonably priced items. Speculation has taken hold of most pop-culture-based collectibles, with vintage comic books and toys leading the way. Never before have so many high school and college age kids considered auctioneering as a major while seriously moonlighting as a part time picker. I personally got my proverbial start in the trade at the age of 16 after passing my driver’s exam on the second try. Speculation aside, reality television has really caused an uptick in interest in the greater antiques and collectibles marketplace. Ironically, there has been one unsettling fact about the kinds of reality television shows that have become

successful. After the unfortunate demise of “Market Warriors” and the fact that the underrated show aptly named “Million Dollar Auctions” hasn’t even come to United States as of yet outside of the Internet, one can possibly surmise that the more the show is grounded in reality the less successful it will possibly be. Both “Market Warriors” and “Million Dollar Auctions” rightfully deserve second seasons and regular watching by collectors and enthusiasts. “Antiques Roadshow” is the only show to thus far defy this notion, as it is very much grounded in reality. It should come as no surprise that most of the popular reality shows are scripted in some manner, and this can be validated by the fact that no one ever says

to the “American Pickers” that they saw them on television. Does anyone really think that their so called freestyle adventures are all that free and full of style? I am sure “scripting” is quite possible, just as I am sure that most of these shows have an ample amount of editing in which a lot of the story is still left on the cutting room floor, much to the dismay of purists like myself. Still the future is bright for most of these shows. Much like the whole realitybased genre that started with “The Real World” and “Survivor,” reality-based television in the antiques and collectibles trade isn’t going anywhere anytime soon as long as enthusiasts continue to watch and so called treasure hunters still dream.

Traver’s Mid-Winter Catalog Sale Brings Strong Results Co-operative weather and quality merchandise combined for an exciting and successful sale in Dallas, Pa., at Traver’s Auction Barn on Feb. 8. Items from a prominent local estate, with quality additions did not disappoint when the bidding began. The sale began at 11 a.m. with a brief catalog of a stein collection. Spirited bidding by those in the room, absentee bids, and several telephone bidders, provided strong results. A Mettlach Book Stein, No. 2001, Engineer, hammered at $750, while other Mettlachs, such as the French Cards No. 1395 and the Musical Note No. 2097 brought $250 each. A metal stein with Bas Relief of a Bacchanal brought $650, and the Mettlach Boar Hunt No. 2083 hammered at $850. The highlight lot of the stein offerings was an ornate Royal Vienna stein, which, after aggressive bidding in the room and on the phone, sold to a bidder in the salesroom for $2,900. Prices quoted are hammer prices and do not reflect the 10 percent buyer’s premium.

Fine and decorative arts were well-represented in the sale, which attracted bidders in the room from New York City, Philadelphia, and even Texas. Results for jewelry offered were highlighted by a Renaissance Revival pendant necklace, in 18-carat gold with gemstones, which sold for $5,000, and an antique platinum and diamond ring, which brought $2,500. These, and another 50 lots,

led to the moment those in attendance had been waiting for, the offering of the oil-oncanvas painting by Vittorio Matteo Corcos, “Untitled 1902.” Several bidders in the hall, plus six on the phone, vied to own the prize of the sale, which sold for $47,500 hammer price to a pleased inhouse bidder. After a short break, and the sale of a 2011 Cadillac DTS Premium for $24,000, the auction returned

to the fine and decorative arts categories. A surprise of the sale was an LC Tiffany Art Glass Vase signed “LC Tiffany Favrile 3892” on the base that sold for $15,500. The 14-inch-tall (and very heavy) vase was the “runner up” to the Corcos painting in the fine and decorative arts category of the sale. Another Tiffany item, the gilded bronze enameled face clock, sold for $3,000. Marble statuary was wellreceived by the gallery of over 200 in attendance, with several pieces bringing between $1,000 and $1,500 each. “We are proud to be able to offer these quality items locally” commented auctioneer Steve Traver from the block during a break in the action. “Consignors should know that proper care and research of their items, with good advertising in the right venue, will consistently

The Appraisal Institute Releases Its 2014 Trending Data For Antiques And Collectibles It’s been almost three years since the Asheford Institute of Antiques, a professional-level, distance learning program on antiques, collectibles and appraising, released its inaugural report on buying and collecting trends within the antiques and collectibles community. But this year they’re back with a new survey that’s aimed at what the school calls “the more relevant aspects” of the antiques marketplace, according to school spokesperson Tony Drew. “When originally released, our first survey was meant to merely gauge general areas of antique interest, but now that we’ve garnered some fairly extensive data

over the past few years, we’re finding that much of that information seems to be backing-up our initial discovery regarding the movement of certain antique trends within the marketplace,” said Drew. The latest survey, which was compiled from enrolled students and former graduates of the Institute, was intended to focus on the current trends of antiques and collectibles and was based on sales and buyer’s requests for specific items. And while no measurable scientific practices were utilized and the survey remained informal in nature, the results still proved quite illuminating, said school deputy director Chris

Hughes, “What we’ve really noticed is that there continues to be an apparent shift in the marketplace, especially when it comes to the younger generation. Categories that tended to gain traction and move up the list in a truly meaningful way were almost invariably connected to younger buyers. Conversely, categories of antiques that seemed to be off the Internet’s central radar appeared to remain relatively neutral in their respective rankings and any movement that did occur was usually the result of older more established buyers.” The link between young and old was not lost on Don Kirpatrick, a 30-something

dealer in the Northeast, who participated in the school’s original survey, as well as the current one, and who agrees with the Institute’s latest findings. “A few years ago I started sensing that younger buyers were interested in different periods and so I began adjusting my buying. I dumped the heavy ornate Victorian stuff and instead concentrated on Art Nouveau, Art Deco, and even some ’50s kitsch, and it’s really paid off,” says Kirpatrick. Staffers from the school also noted this sentiment, saying that many of the respondents from the latest survey had echoed these same thoughts, stating in essence that there had been a

noticeable shift in overall buying preferences towards the “flashier” side of the Victorian spectrum. “It’s just not my parents antique store any more,” said Julie Walsh, a dealer on the West Coast, “I mean, I just can’t sell what they sell. It simply doesn’t resonate with my generation.” According to Shirley Huey, one of the staffers involved in completing the survey, younger dealers continued to have very different items and inventory when compared to older dealers. “In fact,” said Huey, “Not only were they vastly different when it came to inventory, but in their marketing approaches as well. It’s a

trend we’re likely to continue to see.” Drew noted that while the latest survey conducted by the Institute was by no means scientific in nature, it still managed to show the development of certain patterns and trends within today’s antiques and collectibles marketplace. “I think our survey is here to stay,” said Drew. “We’ve had an awful lot of requests since the first one came out, so it’s likely we’ll continue to offer this type of survey well into the future.” For more information about the school’s latest survey or their antiques and appraisal course, call 877-444-4508 or visit www.asheford.com.

case clock, (1815-25). A mix of mahogany veneer, cherry, and poplar make this a striking piece while the brass movement features a decorated dial and ship dial arch wheel. The inside of the case door has a pencil-written repair history, beginning with A.M. Pesham in Owen County in 1870. It will have an estimate of $2,000$4,000. A late 18th-century Pennsylvania Chippendale tall chest of drawers is sure to draw bidder’s attention and carries a presale estimate of $2,000$4,000. A Canadian classical card table by Thomas Nisbet (St. John, New Brunswick, 1820-40) features a flip-andswivel-top table on rope turned legs. Nisbet (1777-1850) was a prolific maker in the city of St. John, importing mahogany from Jamaica and exporting furniture to other cities. The estimate will be $300-$600. Additional highlights of the sale include a historical blue Staffordshire plate with portrait medallions of Jeffers and Clinton over the New York City Hotel and “View of the Aqueduct Bridge at Little Falls.” The platter will cross

the block with an estimate of $1,000-$2,000. Another historical blue Staffordshire platter from England, first half of the 19th century, of Esplanade and Castle Garden, N.Y., should bring $600-$1,200. A hand-colored lithograph printed by Bowen, Philadelphia, 1848, by John Woodhouse Audubon, titled “Severn River Flying Squirrels,” carries a presale estimate of $600$800, while a hand-colored engraving also by Audubon titled “Fish Crow” and published by R. Havell, London, 1832, is expected to fetch $1,500-$2,500. A Navajo rug, which is possibly Red Mesa, features an intricate design with orange and green accents. The rug is expected to bring $1,000-$2,000. Garth’s illustrated catalog is available for purchase by contacting client services at 740-362-4771 or may be browsed for free online at www.garths.com. Garth’s main gallery is located at 2960 Stratford Road in Delaware, Ohio. For further information, call 740-362-4771.

The sale offers material for both seasoned and new collectors and will include country painted furniture, lighting, English ceramics, historical blue Staffordshire, Mason’s ironstone, American stoneware, textiles, and American classical furniture. An important American quilt (circa 1850) has a Zachary Taylor printed backing that covers the entire backside of the 83.5-by-84-inch quilt. The backing is a repeated print of General Taylor at the Battle of Resaca de la Palma during the Mexican War. The front displays a “Caroline Lily” pattern in red and green on white, alternating with solid blue blocks. The estimate will be $1,000$2,000. Furniture offerings throughout the course of the day will include a Kentucky Federal tall
