“Fred Harvey Jewelry: 1900–1955” The success of today’s American Indian silversmith follows a pathway blazed by the silver Indian jewelry makers that came before, those who brought the raw silver, channeled it, worked it, and made it profitable. In a large sense, the Fred Harvey name built the structure upon which

many of today’s Southwestern Indian silver and art traditions survive. The recently published “Fred Harvey Jewelry: 1900-1955,” written by Dennis June, is a comprehensive study into his work utilizing several private collections and hundreds of specimens, the best of which were painstakingly

Doing Our Part

LiveAuctioneers, the leading Internet live-bidding platform for fine art, antiques and collectibles, recorded its best year ever in 2013, with gross online sales of $222.5 million. Founded in November 2002, the Manhattan-based company has maintained profitability since its inception. “While LiveAuctioneers has enjoyed phenomenal growth over the past 11 years, 2013 was definitely our most successful year to date,” said LiveAuctioneers CEO Julian R. Ellison. “We’re in supergrowth mode for 2014, with plans to introduce many exciting new online products and services over the next 12 months.” During 2013, there were 37.6 million visits to LiveAuctioneers’ website, with the number of unique visitors jumping 11 percent over the prior year. Mobile use also grew substantially. In the fourth quarter alone, mobile visits rose by 28.72 percent compared to those of Q4 2012, while tablet visits surged nearly 32 percent. Ellison attributes LiveAuctioneers’ ongoing success to several factors, including its flexibility toward sellers. LiveAuctioneers championed non-exclusivity for auction houses at a time when competing platforms were imposing restrictive, growth-killing policies, Ellison said. “Any platform that

Antiques And Clocks In Mullic a Hill

It has been about eight years since an antique clock shop has been in the Mullica Hill/Gloucester County, N.J., area. Now, that has changed, since nationally recognized horologist Gregg Perry has opened a clock, watch and scientific instrument show room in the acclaimed “King’s Court” antiques building located at 48 N. Main St. in Mullica Hill. The Mullica Hill showroom houses his tall case, mantle, wall clocks, and barometers from time periods ranging from the 17th century up to the 1940s. The shop specializes in American, British, French, and German timepieces, which are fully restored with a two-year warranty. Antique clock sales are only a part of the story. The majority of Perry’s business is clock and watch servicing. (Continued on page 6)

bundles its products into exclusive contracts obviously can’t survive in an open-market environment. In such cases, it’s always the seller who suffers,” said Ellison. “If a provider forces sellers into exclusive contracts, where’s the incentive to provide better customer service or invest in new technologies and products to benefit those clients? Our sellers are free to use multiple live-bidding platforms simultaneously.” Seller confidence throughout 2013 was validated by the 27 percent growth in catalog listings on LiveAuctioneers as compared to 2012. Last year, 3,657,074 items were listed in auctions using LiveAuctioneers, while the prior year’s total was 2,881,369. In 2013, LiveAuctioneers’ brand identity took flight worldwide, as reflected by the 70 percent increase in direct traffic over that of 2012. “This metric tells the number of visitors who type our URL directly onto their browser or click on a bookmark,” Ellison explained. “In just 12 months, our direct traffic went from 6.4 million to 10.9 million visits.” Recently released data confirms that China led the world in art purchases in 2013 ($4.078 billion). Last year on LiveAuctioneers, executed bids from China-based users increased by 37 percent over the prior year. Also in 2013, the number of registered users in China rose by 43 percent

and auction signups climbed 35 percent over 2012. Asian antiques claimed seven of the year’s top 10 slots for highest-priced items sold via LiveAuctioneers. Highlights included a pair of Chinese porcelain bowls with reign marks that sold for $196,800 (William H. Bunch Auctions); a Chinese carved rhinoceros-horn cup that sold for $184,500 (Neal Auction Co.); and a Chinese Qing Dynasty carved rhinoceros horn that sold for $181,900 (California Asian Art Auction Gallery). Another potent category was rare and important cameras, including a 1995 Leica M6 platinum camera, Sultan of Brunei 50th-birthday edition, that sold for $602,642 (L & H Auction) and Alfred Eisenstaedt’s 1937 Leica camera that sold for $159,698 (Westlicht Photographica Auction). LiveAuctioneers concluded 2013 with robust fourthquarter results. The 2,092 auctions scheduled through LiveAuctioneers during Q4 attracted 6.2 million unique visitors and prompted 85.5 million page views. Visitors to LiveAuctioneers catalogs spent, on average, 27.46 percent more time browsing than in Q4 2012. Gross fourthquarter sales reached $65.8 million. Antiques & Auction News — March 14, 2014 - - 3

SHOPS & CENTERS This Week: Beadwork: A Truly Underappreciated And Undervalued Native American Art with many talented beadworkers throughout the United States producing incredible work. For many, beadwork is equated with the children’s kits that are sold in stores today the small plastic looms where kids can string together beads and make assorted bracelets and necklaces. This is far removed from the exquisitely done beadwork produced particularly by the Great Plains Indians in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Women did this beadwork with either natural or firelight and using tiny little seed beads that as a wearer of bifocals, I am blown away to see. Collecting beadwork is a fun area for new collectors to explore because there are virtually an unlimited number of directions you can go. You can collect by form: fetishes, knife sheaths, moccasins, and more. You can collect by tribe or region: Plateau, Ute, Lakota Sioux, and more. You can collect children’s items, including clothing and rattles, or you can collect dress or wedding items for adults. It is really up to you. There are a few caveats.

By Peter Seibert

Folks often ask me what I would suggest as an area to begin collecting where there are wonderful opportunities to find great treasures AND you will not break the bank in collecting them. I have to say that Native American beadwork is one of those areas! When they excavated the pre-Civil War Mississippi River steamboat Arabia in 1988, they found huge quantities of seed-sized colored beads. These were among the millions of beads that were being shipped west for trade with the Native Americans particularly in the Great Plains, Southwest and Pacific Northwest. From those beads came countless moccasins, shirts, dresses, bags and more! The story of trade beads goes back to the 18th century. At Washington Boro, Lancaster County, Pa., the site of a Susquehannock Indian site, trade beads were found dating from the late 17th and early 18th centuries. That tradition still exists down to the present,

First is that you need to own a fair number of reference books and see a few museum collections before striking out on your own. It is a subject where pieces are rarely signed and there is tremendous misinformation about what tribe produced what items. Here in northern New Mexico, we see pieces that represent many different cultural groups, from Arapaho and Kiowa to Osage and Apache. And then you have items that seem to mix multiple tribal traditions together, and those just might be Ute! So, it is important to realize that it does take some learning. But hey…what else do you have to do at night but sleep! Second is that there are very serious beadwork collectors in this country and thus the best items do command tremendous prices. So, while I think there are great opportunities to find wonderful things inexpensively priced, there are also highly valued pieces as well. Third, and this scares off a lot of collectors, telling the old from the new can be very difficult. Beadwork is not easily

dated unless you are very familiar with subtle changes in motifs and designs. So, it is not always possible to know exactly how old a piece is. In saying that, I strongly recommend collectors look for both new and old material. There are beadworkers out there who are doing work as good as, if not better, than most historic work. Rather than turning away from it, meet the artists and add the work to your collection. Because beadwork is timeless, you can be free to acquire a wide range of materials from many time periods, and it all looks great together. Fourth and finally, condition does matter. I often see beadwork being sold where significant numbers of beads are missing and the dealer is charging a crazy price. Finding matches for lost beads is possible and so repairs are possible; however, I would counsel you to try and purchase pieces in as good shape as possible and to store them carefully. Native American beadwork is a lot of fun to collect and enjoy. While writing this today, a volunteer here at the

Invaluable’s strong quarter results come on the heels of the company’s re-branding to Invaluable from the former Artfact brand, as well as the launch of a new website and enhanced online experience in November 2013. “The fourth quarter of 2013 was one of the most exciting in our company history, said Invaluable CEO Rob Weisberg. “More and more auction houses are turning to Invaluable to increase the reach of their sales by providing access to millions of online bidders, and in turn, more consumers are able to bid on and win the items they are most passionate about. Leading to the company’s strong fourth-quarter results were a number of high profile

Invaluable, the world’s largest online live auction marketplace, announced recordbreaking fourth-quarter 2013 results with a 102 percent increase in gross merchandise sales over the same time period in 2012. The company’s growth that quarter was driven by an 80 percent increase in buyer transactions, which was fueled by world-class merchandise available through the Invaluable platform. In the fourth quarter of 2013, the number of auction houses partnering with Invaluable also increased dramatically, as more auctioneers leverage the Invaluable marketplace to drive greater bidder demand and overall sales performance.

Phillips To Offer Photographs From The Collection Of The Art Institute Of Chicago Phillips is pleased to announce the sale of photographs from the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago, to be offered in New York and London in the fall of 2014. A leading international institution, the Art Institute of Chicago has been a pioneer in collecting artwork from every place and period, amassing one of the most reputable and comprehensive collections in the world. As part of that pioneering mission, the Art Institute has shown photographs as art since 1900, and for nearly 65 years the museum has pursued a vigorous acquisitions program of tremendous range and excellence. The photographs to be offered in the sale tell a particular story of Art Institute firsts and notable successes, from André Kertész to Robert Frank, Henri Cartier-Bresson to Edward Weston, and Irving Penn to Robert Heinecken. “This is a landmark year for the Department of Photography at the Art Institute,” said Matthew S. Witkovsky, Richard and Ellen Sandor chair and curator of the department. “In 2014 we celebrate our 40th anniversary as a separate curatorial department and the fifth anniversary of our dedicated galleries in the Art Institute’s modern

wing. Those two anniversaries represent continuity and change - both essential to our progress. We have spent three and a half years assessing our holdings, with a view to refining and diversifying the collection, as well as better understanding the treasures that we possess. Proceeds from the sale will support future acquisitions, and we are grateful to Phillips for working with such care and consideration on this sale.” “Phillips is honored to partner with the Art Institute of Chicago on this important deaccession. The museum’s decades long commitment to the field of photographs will be reflected throughout the sale, presenting collectors with a rare opportunity to pursue works of superb caliber across a remarkable spectrum,” said Vanessa Kramer Hallett, senior director and worldwide head of photographs at Phillips. The collection will be sold in October in New York and in November in London, with additional works to be offered in an online selling exhibition in December. Highlights from the sale will be exhibited throughout 2014 in New York, Chicago, and London. For additional information, visit www.phillips.com.

He is a professor at the NAWCC school of horology, where he will teach eight different courses throughout 2014. Also, he is the acting president of the NAWCC Delaware chapter 27. His case restoration/conservation training took place at the Louvre Museum and Ecole Boulle in Paris over a four year period. He has also taught at NYU and is a decorative arts appraiser. For the would-be antique hunter or the clock collector or enthusiast, on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. you can observe Perry working at the bench. Ask a question or admire centuries of old clock and watchmaking techniques, and while you are there, meander through all the wonderful venues that the “Kings Court” has to offer. Kings Court Antiques is located on Historic Main Street with 14 other Antique Shops along the “golden mile of antiques” in Mullica Hill, N.J. For additional information, call 856-986-0911.

Coddington said that though he “hopes people will bring plenty of photographs to copy,” the magazine also publishes military images from other media. A contributing author to the New York Times “Disunion” series, Coddington also writes “Faces of War,” a regular column in Civil War News. The D.C. Antique Photo and Postcard Show will open with an 8:30 a.m. special preview for $25 admission. Regular admission will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a $10 admission. After 1 p.m., students with ID will be admitted free of charge. The hotel is walking distance from Georgetown and is one block from the Rosslyn station on the Metro’s orange and blue lines. The 31-yearold photo show is in its sixth year of management by Diverse Markets Management, a D.C. company. A related postcard show was added in 2012. For more information, readers may call show manager Tom Rall at 703-534-8220 or postcard show promoter Jeff Bradfield at 540-476-2666.

Both customers and exhibitors are invited to bring historic military images to the 31st annual spring D.C. Antique Photo and Postcard Show, to be held on Sunday, March 16, at the Holiday Inn Rosslyn, located at 1900 N. Fort Myer Drive in Arlington, Va. Images brought to the show will be scanned for future inclusion in either Military Images Magazine or its social media outlets. The invitation was extended by editor and publisher Ronald S. Coddington, a North Arlington resident who purchased the 35-year-old quarterly magazine in 2013. According to Coddington, the magazine, which documents the photographic history of the U.S. soldier and sailor, “is particularly looking for Civil War images in conjunction with the war’s ongoing 150-year anniversary. But our previous focus has included the period through World War 1, and so we’re interested in military images from the next 50 or so years (after the Civil War) as well.”

This “Rushton &/Aspinwall/NewYork” - “Compound/ C h l o r i n e / Toothwash” medicine bottle, made circa 1840-1860, probably by either a Stoddard or Keene glasshouse, is estimated at $7,500$15,000.

Concentric Ring Eagle historical flask, made circa 18181830 by the New England Glass Company. This brilliant yellow green flask is accompanied by correspondence dating to the 1950s from George and Betty McKearin, as well as J.E. Nevil, concerning the proposed purchase of the flask (though they were not successful). The second flask is a Washington Bust and Frigate portrait flask, circa 18471850, in a brilliant yellowish olive, manufactured by the Albany Glass Works. The third, a light yellow olive

Another important half-pint flask is a Lafayette-DeWitt Clinton portrait flask, from Coventry (Conn.) Glass Works, circa 1825. This flask is rare because it has two rings at the bottom rather than three, and it is estimated at $2,500$5,000. Rounding out the flasks category are two examples, both expected to realize $4,000-$8,000. The Double Eagle historical pint flask, made around 18501855, possibly by Kentucky Glass Works (Louisville, Ky.), is a beautiful and popular brilliant sapphire blue. The second is a sea green concentric ring eagle historical quart flask, made circa 1820-1830, probably by the New England Glass Co. Of the eight hat whimsies in the auction, two are particularly noteworthy. One is an octagonal hat formed from a utility mold glass bottle, made in America, circa 1840-1860, bright golden amber in color and estimated at $1,000$2,000. The second, an example from the Dr. Paul S. Andreson collection of hat whimsies, is a bright light green pattern molded glass hat whimsey with 16 ribs swirled to the right, probably made in the Midwest, circa 1820-1840, and estimated at $500-$1,000. There will be 13 early medicines in the auction. A “Rushton &/Aspinwall/NewYork” “Compound/ Chlorine/Toothwash” medicine bottle, circa 1840-1860, probably made by either a Stoddard or Keene glasshouse (est. $7,500$15,000) stands out because

The deep olive green “T Bailey” sealed wine bottle was probably made in England between 1760 and 1770 (est. $1,000-$2,000). The base embossed “New Eng Glass Bottle Co” rum bottle is the only American black glass bottle in this auction, and it is estimated at $600-$1,200. A “Brown’s Celebrated Indian Herb Bitters” Indian queen figural bottle, circa 1860-1880, catches the eye in a brilliant golden yellow with a topaz tone estimated at $1,000$2,000. There are a number of rare and exceptional ink bottles and inkwells in this auction. A “J.L. Thompson/Troy N-Y” master ink bottle in a bright yellow olive is unlisted and extremely rare with an estimate of $2,000-$4,000. medicines, whimsey hats, bitters, inks, black glass, and more.” A number of the more remarkable pieces will be coming from the Clarissa Vanderbilt Dundon collection of historical flasks. Mrs. Dundon is the daughter of pioneer collector Merritt Vanderbilt. This vast collection has been admired and sought after by many great collectors over the years. Perhaps the most noteworthy piece from the Vanderbilt Dundon collection is a Sunburst snuff jar manufactured by Keene Marlboro Street Glassworks (Keene, N.H.), circa 1815-1830. The deep yellowish green bottle, incredibly rare and in virtually perfect condition, has a pre-sale estimate of $20,000-$40,000. Three flasks carry identical pre-sale estimates of $15,000-$30,000. The first is a very early, rare and unusually colored

$1,500-$3,000, should draw attention. Another master ink bottle to take note of is the “North &/Warrin’s/Fine Ink,” circa 1840-1860, dark grayish blue green in color (est. $500-$1,000). Among all these exceptional bottles is a little gem. A rare utility item in a freeblown egg form will catch the fancy of many a collector because of its distinctive shape. The little light yellow olive bottle was probably manufactured at a Connecticut glasshouse and is only 3.5 inches tall. It is estimated at $400-$800. Norman C. Heckler’s showroom is

of the unusually large flared mouth, which is particularly interesting because it has no damage despite its delicate nature. Another standout lot is a beautiful bright golden amber “Howard’s/Vegetable/ Cancer &/Canker Syrup” medicine bottle from a Stoddard (N.H.) glasshouse, circa 1846-1860, and estimated at $6,000$12,000. Later, Dorothy became interested in antique dolls, after seeing a picture on the cover of “The Magazine Antiques.” “Dorothy Foote was fortunate to be able to attend the lst Annual UFDC convention in 1950,” said Morphy Auctions’ doll consultant, Jan Foulke. “Her sister, Bertha Budde, took up doll dressing, so many of the dolls in the Foote collection were costumed by ‘Aunt Bea.’” Dorothy Foote had five children. All of them shared in the dispersal of her collection when she died, but only two actively followed in her doll-collecting footsteps: her son, Irving, and her daughter, Dorothy Foote Mishler. Dorothy resides in Wooster, Ohio, and is still a member of UFDC. Irving’s wife, Iverna, shared her husband’s interest in collecting. The Foote family legacy has now entered its third generation through Irving and Iverna’s daughter, Mary Foote. Previously held on Tuesdays, they will now be conducted on Sundays, starting with the March 23 Advertising & Toy Auction. “Our Weekly Auctions held on Tuesdays have been extremely popular with collectors, but many of our regular buyers have told us they would love to bid in these sales but can’t, primarily because of work commitments, said Morphy Auctions CEO Dan Morphy. “Moving the Weekly ! " # # $ Ordinarily, Morphy’s conducts one Weekly Auction per month for each of the following categories: Toys, General Antiques, and Advertising & Toys. The auctions include items that may have missed a consignment deadline for one of Morphy’s Premier or Specialty Auctions. In other cases, consignments may represent antiques or collectibles that their owners prefer to sell quickly rather than waiting for the next major auction. As for Morphy’s Premier and Specialty sales, they will be held exclusively on Saturdays and Sundays, starting with the April 26-27 Advertising & Coin-Op Auction. “All one-day Specialty and Premier sales will continue to be Saturday events, but any two-day Premier sales, which traditionally have been held over a Friday and Saturday, will now be scheduled as Saturday/Sunday auctions, said Morphy. “We’re eliminating all weekday sales completely. No change will be made to Morphy’s standard 9 a.m. start time. Another strong section of the auction was comprised of Victorian opalescent glass. Virtually all of the lots offered sold above estimate, including those within the cranberry glass category. Two Swastika pattern cranberry opalescent items realized the highest prices for this section of the auction, with a water pitcher selling for $6,900 against a $2,000$4,000 estimate and an Indiana mold syrup pitcher selling for $5,750. Both were made at Dugan Glass Co., circa 1904. Dugan also made a Swastika pattern nine-panel mold syrup pitcher, in green opalescent glass, which realized $3,738 against a $1,000$1,500 estimate.

Fooled By Fakes

By Anita Stratos

For time immemorial, fakers, forgers, and counterfeiters have delved into just about every profitable field of interest, from currency and collectibles to famous museum pieces. Even technology and food have fallen victim to scammers. Cheap, lowcost flash drives are being sold in high-end, name-brand packaging online; foul play was only suspected when the drives performed extremely poorly or not at all. In the food line, it’s been exposed that a high percentage of extra virgin olive oil labeled as such and sold under major brand names in stores is actually either smaller amounts of olive oil diluted with cheaper oils or cheaper oils with green coloring added. Even the category of wine is not exempt. as counterfeit bottles of old wines are fooling wealthy wine collectors in a big way. A number of connoisseurs (many of whom, understandably, have chosen to remain anonymous) have individually spent in excess of $5 million on collections of 500 or more bottles of fake wines. Many of these counterfeits were discovered in China and exposed by French fraud and customs agents. Sometimes these fake wines are poured into authentic old wine bottles purchased online and at flea markets, while other times the labels are completely new. And that’s one way to determine a fake before investing in it: many will have incorrect style or size of fonts and will be printed on new paper. One fraudster created labels on a printer that was introduced sixty years after the wine was purportedly made. Another label faker took a shortcut: he scanned authentic labels onto his computer, then simply altered the vintage date with photo editing software. For a little change of pace and with that thought in

mind, let’s take a look at a few of the more notable cases of fraudsters who have been caught in the act recently. African art collectors and tourists were the target of a 22-person fraud ring that had sold over $130,000 of fake African art to unsuspecting victims in Paris, France. The ring focused on people who were leaving art galleries and represented their fakes as antique African art pieces. Another five hundred fake pieces were discovered in a workshop, awaiting future sale. The operation had been in existence for only about a year. Closer to home, a Long Island, N.Y., art dealer admitted to her role in a multimillion dollar art forgery conspiracy that sold fake Modernist art over a period of 15 years. The works so closely mimicked the styles of Jackson Pollock, Robert Motherwell, and Mark Rothko that experts of all kinds, including art dealers and educated collectors, were completely fooled. As if all that wasn’t surprising enough, the topper came in the revelation that all of the works were created by one immigrant living in Queens, N.Y., who convincingly copied the styles of all three artists, a very hard thing to do! It seems that no strata of society is a stranger to profiting from counterfeits. In early 2013, the 29-year-old lead singer from pop-punk band Forever The Sickest Kids was caught selling counterfeit Rolex watches. He was arrested and charged with trademark counterfeiting as well as attempted distribution of the fake watches. In his letter of apology to his fans, the singer stated that he is “now aware of the financial harm that the distribution of counterfeit property can cause to others.” If only all counterfeit dealers would learn the same lesson. Falsely aged modern

items being misrepresented as valuable antiques or antiquities in order to sell them for huge profits is a common practice that both tourists and collectors alike need to watch out for. In Mangalore, India, a two-man con game was stopped by police after two victims reported that the supposed antique idols they’d bought were fakes. One victim had paid the equivalent of over $30,000 U.S. dollars and the other paid over $200,000. The fraudsters, named Sadiq and Faizi, were buying cheap idols, smearing them with dung, and burying them for 15 days to give them a forced patina and a look of age. Faizi is still being sought, but Sadiq was arrested. Another 14 idols were found in the latter’s possession. Here’s one with a bit of a twist, instead of the antique in question being fake, it was the person who was a fake. To top that, the target of the fraud was none other than famed late Rockefeller heiress Barbara “Bobo” Rockefeller. The fraud was exposed when Bobo Rockefeller’s daughter-inlaw, Lisenne Rockefeller, filed court papers in Manhattan stating that a slick Michigan man by the name of Josef Meyers pretended to be Austrian royalty in order to get close to Bobo. Calling himself Prince Josef von Habsburg-Lothringen, Meyers was revealed to be a convicted felon with a long record. Like something out of a movie plot, Meyers was so accomplished and smooth at his deception that not only did he convince the unsuspecting heiress of his royal status, he talked his way into moving himself, another woman, and her children into Rockefeller’s six-story multimillion-dollar Manhattan mansion, where they lived for eight months. During that time he orchestrated her isolation from

reproduction. His excuse? He claimed he was moving it (along with an expensive rug) into storage for safekeeping, when in reality he sold it to an allegedly unwitting London antiques dealer, who put it up for auction at Sotheby’s. Those are just a few of

friends and family, even selectively firing the staff members who knew her best. Besides living in the lap of luxury, Meyers reached his ultimate goal when he stole a stunning $80,000 antique Louis XV commode from the home and replaced it with a

frame, may be Mrs. Hall Jackson Tibbits and her son, Robert, who was born in 1840, making the portrait the woman holds that of Captain Hall Jackson Tibbits. A large selection of jewelry is also included in this sale. There will be 80 lots of jewelry, such as brooches, rings, bracelets, pins, earrings, watches, and necklaces. A carved coral cameo brooch features a woman with grapes and vines in her hair holding a vase in her left hand. Three 14K gold men’s rings are offered as one lot and include a Masonic example, a military example, and one with a gold coin marked “dos y medio pesos * 1945.” A yellow gold bracelet is available, which features shadow box silhouettes of various landscapes. The sale ends with a selection of carpets to include Kashan, Kazak, Hamadan, Caucasian, Malayer, Aubusson, Sarouk, and Chinese examples. Pook & Pook, Inc. is celebrating 30 years of auctions in 2014! For the entire year they will be giving out free catalogues to any customer attending the auction who is 30 years old or younger. New Acquisitions For The American Folk Art Museum The American Folk Art Museum (AFAM) recently announced it had acquired a number of traditional folk art works and several pieces by self-taught artists from various time periods. The objects date from the 18th century to the present. The mission of the AFAM is to preserve, conserve, and interpret works of traditional and contemporary folk art. The most notable acquisition is “The Peaceable Kingdom,” done by Quaker artist Edward Hicks. Hicks painted numerous versions of “The Peaceable Kingdom” over his lifetime, and this particular version was given to Hick’s daughter as a wedding present. It had remained in the Hicks family for many years and was later represented by Edith Gregor Halpert and her well-known American Folk Art Gallery, Terry Dintenfass, and the Sidney Janis Gallery. It was donated to the museum by Sidney Janis’ son, Carroll,

and his wife, Donna. Other acquisitions include a 19th-century watercolor book that was purchased on Jan. 25th at the Ralph Esmerian sale held by Sotheby’s. The manuscript book of Pennsylvania origin has 40 vividly decorated pages and sold at the sale for $53,125 (est. $25,000-$35,000). Another notable object was an ethereal work by Thornton Dial, gifted to the museum by the artist’s family. Another work was a crayon-and-pencil drawing by the Mexican-American artist Martin Ramirez, which was donated by David L. Davies, a former museum trustee, and Jack Weeden, who had previously established a $1 million dollar exhibition fund in their names. The AFAM is located at 2 Lincoln Square, Columbus Avenue at 66th Street in New York City. To learn more about the museum, visit www.folkart museum.org.

Winfrey Donates To The National Museum Of African American History And Culture The Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., announced that Oprah Winfrey will donate $12 million to support the capital campaign of the new National Museum of African American History and Culture. Winfrey donated $1 million in 2007, bringing her total contribution to the project to $13 million. She has been a member of the museum’s advisory council since 2004. The museum’s 350-seat theater will be named the Oprah Winfrey Theater. The museum, which is currently under construction, is expected to cost $500 million by the time it reaches completion.

Congressional funding provided half of the capital and the rest is being raised by the museum. It will be situated next to the Washington Monument and will be the 19th Smithsonian museum. “At its heart, the National Museum of African History and Culture is a showcase for a richer, fuller picture of the American experience. The Oprah Winfrey Theater will bring untold stories alive through films, performances, artistic expression, and public dialogue,” said Wayne Clough, the Smithsonian secretary. The museum is expected to open in late 2015. the current economy. We had a sizable in-house crowd throughout the day. “Multi Flora” studio art vase sold for $978, over the $400$600 estimate, and a Thomas Webb & Sons English cameo cabinet vase, depicting scrolling foliage and flowers, sold for $3,450 against a $400-$600 estimate. After the auction, auctioneer Jeffrey S. Evans said, “This was our best performing glass auction since the recession started, grossing nearly $400,000. We saw many past buyers and numerous new buyers who were enticed by the high quality of merchandise and the conservative estimates, which combined to push some lots to near pre-recession levels. Only three lots carried a reserve and all sold.” When asked to comment on the antiques market in general Evans added, “Things are really looking up.
