Cool Americana From The Graeter Collection By Andrew Richmond An auctioneer’s job is more than calling bids and pounding the gavel. There’s also more than a little old-school showmanship required in creating an event, and an event is certainly what M a i n Auction Gallery’s J. Louis “Jay” Karp and his son Jonas created with their Feb. 28 sale of selections from the landmark Americana collection of the late Jon Graeter held in Cincinnati, Ohio. Jay and Jonas, the fourth and fifth generations to manage the family business which the Karp family purchased in 1870 - making it
the oldest auction house west of the Allegheny Mountains - have done much the same thing at Main Auction. Ice cream aficionados will recognize the Graeter name. In the late
Most of the Lehnware left the estimates in the dust, and this yellow ground cup and saucer were no exception, selling for $10,000. Prices reported are hammer prices. 1950s, Jon Graeter and his two brothers took over the ice cream company their grandfather started in Cincinnati in 1870. Under their stewardship, Graeter’s Ice Cream became a Cincinnati institution. Graeter did much of his buying in the 1970s through the 1990s, back when a fellow Ohio collector says, “People Express Airline was in operation and they had a $49 roundtrip flight to New York City, so Continued on page 2
Sharp-eyed bidders recognized that this hanging corner cupboard is related to a decorated box that sold at Garth’s Auctions 2015 Thanksgiving Auction for over $60,000. Both are from Somerset County, Pa. The cupboard was missing most of its cornice, but still sold for $19,500 to dealer Kelly Kinzle. It brought $20,900 in 1986 at the Don and Faye Walters sale through Sothebys. (Above) John Brewster also painted portraits of the parents of this young lady, and those are in the collection of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. That fact undoubtedly help make this portrait the high selling lot of the day at $77,500. Jon Graeter purchased from major auctions regularly, but sadly, not much of that provenance accompanied the collection when it went to Karp’s warehouse. This 1791 Berks County, Pa., blanket chest had an old Sotheby’s label, but the specific sale was not cited. It sold for $55,000 to Andy Anderson in the salesroom.
A copy of Amazing Fantasy #15, the 1962 first appearance of Spiderman, sold at Heritage Auctions in Dallas on Feb. 18, for $454,100, a record price at public auction for the comic. The near-mint, 9.4 CGC copy claimed top lot honors in Heritage’s $5.7+ million comics and comic art signature auction. The copy was purchased in 1980 by New York area collector Walter Yakaboski, a comic book collector, who had the opportunity to buy a handful of key early Marvel comic books for the sum of $10,000 - a good bit to spend in those days. Among them was the copy of Amazing Fantasy #15, the landmark first appearance of Spider-Man. This particular comic cost $1,200 among the trove purchased accounting to Yakaboski. The copy was not known to the collecting hobby before this auction, because Yakaboski kept it preserved in a safe deposit box for 35 years. The buyer at Heritage was an anonymous collector. “It’s a superbly preserved copy of one of the most sought-after comic books in the world,” said Lon Allen, managing director of the comics department at Heritage. “It’s worth well more than its weight in gold. There are very few like this one.” Another Spider-Man comic from Yakaboski’s collection drew serious attention as a 1963 copy of The Amazing Spider-Man #1 sold for $110,537. A copy of Detective Comics #27 -

marking the first appearance of Batman - shocked the auction room floor when it realized $167,300, despite its 4.5 CBCS grade and extensive restoration. A high-grade, near-mint 9.4 CGC copy of The Avengers #1 sold for $98,587. The iconic book is tied as the secondhighest CGC-graded copy to ever be offered by Heritage. Perhaps foreshadowing the success of his big screen debut in “Captain America: Civil War,” a near-mint 9.8 CGC copy of Fantastic Four #52, famous for the first appearance of the Black Panther, saw intense bidder interest as it sold for $83,650. White Ironstone China Association To Hold Convention In York, Pa. The beautiful white china also known as ironstone was patented in 1812 by Charles Mason. His pottery was located in the Staffordshire district of England. Soon other potters were making a variety of shapes in this durable china. This china was then shipped to America and Canada. The White Ironstone China Association (WICA), an organization dedicated to the study of this particular ceramic, holds its annual convention in the spring. This year it will be in York, Pa., from Thursday, April 28 through Sunday, May 1. A bus tour to the Historical Gettysburg Battlefield is planned for Friday, April 29. Programs on Saturday, April 30 will include how some members use ironstone in

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: The Mental Game: Part Three
This is the third and final column in a series that looks at what motivates a collector to buy outside of their knowledge base. How do we decide what to buy and when to pull the trigger on something that could be wonderful or just plain trash? In the last two columns, I described how I almost pulled the trigger on two items that I coveted but had

They were press photos and thus not unique in that multiple copies existed and had been used. There was a host of White House Christmas cards with Bess Truman’s autopen signature on them. And then finally a lot of rather worthless news clippings, modern store postcards and the like on the former president. I pulled the trigger and bought it. What made me decide to grab this? As a history buff and someone who enjoyed the book “Plain

So, after much deliberation, it came into the permanent collection. I share these stories to get us thinking about how we make decisions. Rationally, we try and work through a process for buying antiques. A dear friend of mine did that at a Mr. Spock/Vulcan level to the extent that he never actually purchased anything as he could rationalize himself out of every purchase. Most of us never go to that extreme, but we do spend a lot of time thinking through our purchases. And maybe that is part of what makes collecting so much fun - the brain’s mental game challenge of buying.

find. The more I looked at the book, the less happy I was with the quality of it. The AP photos were nice but we have all seen the stacks of such things dumped on eBay from old newspaper morgues. The holiday cards were okay, but not great and the modern stuff was truly dreadful. This morning, I was up early and sat down for a third look at what I bought. I reflected on why I purchased it and felt that I had in fact done well with the book. The sum total of the parts equaled or exceeded the price. It was a good collection that I would enjoy and the condition was spot on.

Speaking, I liked the subject matter. The photos were not glued down and so the book could be disassembled and the photos slipped into protective sleeves. And the price to number of items ratio was such that I was paying under $1 for each item. The math seemed good and I bought it. When I got home, I sat down hoping above hopes that I might find an original Truman signature there. No such luck and I was sure that if one had been there, the dealer would have pulled it and sold it separately. Since there were missing pages, my guess is that there were no originals there. Okay, hopes dashed of the great

A nice needlepoint carpet came home that my wife loved, and the girls got some pulp fiction to read, but I just was not seeing anything. Then I spotted the piece in a case. It was a massive scrapbook of items belonging to someone who was a fan of Bess Truman. Political items are a sidebar of mine and one does not see a ton of Truman material out there and so with trembling hand, I asked to see it. The price was $100 but the dealer

For gardening enthusiasts, there are flower pots and gardening books, bird and frog figurines and a lovely assortment of garden-inspired signed brooches in addition to other charming pieces of jewelry to wear on spring outings. So many celebrations so little time. Hurry in to find the pot of gold before those

The Graeter Collection
36th Annual NAMBC Convention Slated
Continued from page 2
National Association Of Milk Bottle Collectors Will Meet In Grantville, Pa.
Fortunately, the weather was nice. Bidders spilled out onto the sidewalk, and at least one was bidding through the window.
Jay Karp told bidders that when this cupboard sold at Christie’s in 1983, it set a world record for painted furniture. He then sold it for $20,000 - a long way from the current world record, but still a very respectable price. The buyer was dealer Kelly Kinzle.
Perhaps one of the few bargains from the Graeter collection was this carved tall c a s e clock. It was catalogued as Pennsylvania, but more likely Connecticut. It was missing the bonnet door, but given gutsy pediment and carved case door, it was a surp r i s e when it h a m mered down for under $3,000.
The National Association of Milk Bottle Collectors will hold its 36th Annual Convention on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, June 2, 3, and 4, at the Holiday InnHershey in Grantville, Pa. The three-day event provides a wonderful opportunity for milk bottle collectors to share their knowledge and enthusiasm about milk bottles and other dairy collectibles while socializing with fellow collectors and friends. The main attraction, taking place continuously throughout the convention in the hotel’s central salesrooms as well as the hotel guest rooms,
will be buying, selling and swapping milk bottles and other dairy memorabilia. The organized convention events will begin on Thursday, June 2, with the opening of the salesrooms and exhibit rooms, as well as an educational seminar presented by an NAMBC member. In addition, Thursday afternoon features the welcome gathering in the hospitality room, with complimentary drinks and snacks. On Friday, June 3, there will be a second seminar, followed by the annual banquet buffet. After dinner, there will be a rare showing of the
classic 1950 movie, “The Milkman,” staring Donald O’Connor, Jimmy Durante, and Piper Laurie. Do not miss this one time showing. We won’t give away the plot but as the movie nears its climax, you’ll enjoy a wild car chase featuring numerous DIVCO milk trucks! On Saturday, June 4, “Sundaes on Saturday” featuring delicious ice cream, plus songs of the 1950s presented by super singing star “Dr. J” and his magical karaoke machine, will take place. Right after the ice cream social, the NAMBC annual membership meeting will be held, providing
association members with an opportunity to express their ideas and concerns. The annual milk bottle auction will be held in the evening. Come watch, listen, sell, buy, socialize, and most of all, have fun. Registration for the convention is open to all. Rooms at the Holiday Inn are available at the NAMBC member rate of $99 per night. The registration forms (one for the hotel and one for the convention) are available by visiting www.milk bottlescollectors.com. For more information, contact Tom Ferguson at 571-918-0272 or email tnjferg@comcast.net.

“The Poetry Of Nature: A Golden Age Of American Landscape Painting” Now Open idyllic depictions of the landscape, these artists conveyed not only the majesty of America, but an image of man living in harmonious balance with nature. “The Poetry of Nature: A Golden Age of American Landscape Painting” opens with seminal works by Thomas Cole and Asher B. The latter frequently worked alongside Cole and was instrumental in leading the group

Coinciding with an increase in leisure travel, the Hudson River painters also journeyed to regions noted for their beauty outside of New York State: New Hampshire, coastal New England, and even the Brandywine Valley were among the areas featured in their works. “The fact that some of these painters, such as William T. Richards and Jasper Cropsey, traveled to the Brandywine is a fascinating connection to this major American art movement. The exhibition helps put works by these artists and our outstanding collection of landscape paintings in broader context,” said Virginia O’ Hara, the Brandywine’s curator of collections and coordinator of curatorial affairs. “Their paintings of the Brandywine region’s verdant countryside, cool woodlands, and peaceful meandering streams fully embrace the spirit of the Hudson River School’s celebration of nature. It is a tremendously exciting opportunity to work with our esteemed colleagues at the New-York Historical Society to bring these inspiring icons of American landscape painting to our region.” The exhibition has been organized by the New-York Historical Society, which features one of the most renowned collections of Hudson River School paintings. Dr. Linda S. Ferber, the director emerita of the New-York Historical Museum and a leading authority on Hudson River School artists, is the curator for this extraordinary exhibition. In conjunction with the exhibition, the Brandywine is organizing a wide array of public programs that will examine numerous aspects of this influential movement in American art with noted speakers drawn from across the country.
after Cole’s untimely death in 1848. Cole’s romantic interpretations of the American landscape - represented in the exhibition by two paintings, one of a tranquil sunset view on the Catskill Creek and another of a sublime mountain landscape with jagged peaks piercing the clouds - demonstrate his mastery of perspective; he is able to convey vast open spaces and create rich atmospheric effects. Durand favored tighter views and closely observed details of nature. Paintings in the exhibition will present his vivid compositions, from majestic mountain ranges to tranquil woodland interiors and studies of trees. About the Brandywine River Museum of Art Asher Brown Durand’s (1796-1886) “Catskill Clove, N.Y.,” Durand’s influential “Letters on Landscape The Brandywine River Museum of Art fea1864 oil-on-canvas is in the collection of the New-York Painting” (1855-56), promoted the movement Historical Society. It was a gift of Nora Durand Woodman, for plein air painting, calling such excursions tures an outstanding collection of American “hard-work-play.” As president of the National art housed in a 19th-century mill building with 1932.14.

A stunning array of over 40 paintings from the New-York Historical Society’s collection by renowned Hudson River School artists, including Thomas Cole, Asher Durand, Albert Bierstadt, Jasper Cropsey, John F. Kensett, and William T. Richards, will be on view for the first time at the Brandywine River Museum of Art from Saturday, March 19 through Sunday, June 12. Painted between 1818 and 1886, the works in “The Poetry of Nature: A Golden Age of American Landscape Painting” illustrate America’s scenic splendor as seen through the eyes of some of the country’s most important painters. “Artists of the Hudson River School created some of the most beautiful paintings in American history. Their works forged a new vision for landscape painting and embodied the expansive and optimistic spirit of 19thcentury America,” noted Thomas Padon, director of the Brandywine River Museum of Art. In the first decade of the 19th century, the expansive landscapes of the Hudson River Valley and adjacent areas, such as the Catskills and the Adirondack Mountains, inspired an elite group of American artists known as the Hudson River School. Coming together under the influence of British émigré painter Thomas Cole (1801-48), they shared a philosophy and appreciation for the natural landscape. Today their collective works are considered the first uniquely American art movement. In their

Comic Books And Comic Art Reign Supreme At Philip Weiss Auction
Original cover art for Hawk Son of Tomahawk #140, by the legendary comic book artist Joe Kubert (19262012) signed, realized $5,450. also very lively phone bidding, especially for the Joe Kubert items,” said Philip Weiss. All prices quoted include a 13 percent buyer’s premium. Moebius, whose real name is Jean Henri Gaston Giraud, was a French artist who worked in the Franco-Belgian bandes dessinees tradition. He used the pseudonym Moebius (and to a lesser extent Gir) for the Blueberry series, which he created with writer Jean-Michel Charlier. It featured one of the first antiheroes in Western comics. He was esteemed by Stan Lee, Federico Fellini and others. The Moebius work sold was a direct color art page, drawn for Metal Hurlant in 1977 for “The Ballade.” Joe
The original cover art for Hawkman #103, by the legendary comic book artist Joe Kubert (1926-2012) signed by the artist sold for $15,800. Hall of Fame in 1997 and the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1998. A choice selection of lots comprised part one of Kubert’s gigantic collection. The remainder will be spread out over a series of future auctions, also to be held by Philip Weiss Auctions. The top lots from his collection in the Feb. 27 sale included signed original cover art for Hawkman #103, which changed hands for $15,800, and Hawk Son of Tomahawk #140, which finished at $5,450. The pair of black Michael Jordan game-worn sneakers wasn’t in new condition (they were game-worn, after all) but the star’s signature had been declared genuine. They were sold with a certificate of authenticity. The backstory was compelling: Jordan wore the sneakers during the 1991 NBA championship playoff series against the L.A. Lakers, while a member of the Chicago Bulls. What would a Philip Weiss Auctions sale be without original Peanuts comic art, drawn by the iconic American illustrator Charles Schulz? A daily Peanuts strip, signed and dated March 2, 1964, topped out at $15,800. Schulz (19222000) became one of the wealthiest men in America by using his childhood insecurities and failures as material
for his beloved Peanuts comic strips. The hundreds of comic books in the auction included rare examples from the heralded Big Apple collection. An example was a pedigree copy of All Select #10 that soared to $8,850. A fine group of movie production cels also came up for bid, including a Peter, Chief and Tiger Lily production cel from the classic Walt Disney film “Peter Pan,” which went to a determined bidder for $3,450. A Star Wars collection included a set of 12 back mint on card figures. An unpunched Hans Solo carded figure sold for $3,560, and a 1977 Star Wars early bird blasted off to $11,300. Also in the sale were Golden and Silver Age Comics, All Star Comics and key issues. Sports items featured sports and non-sports cards, autographed jersey, equipment cards, signed bats and more. Philip Weiss Auctions’ next big sale will be a 700-lot blockbuster event scheduled for Saturday, March 19, at 10 a.m. in Philip Weiss Auctions’ Lynbrook, New York gallery. Categories will include militaria, vintage WWI posters, World’s Fair, historical items, advertising, Hollywood, rock ‘n’ roll, ocean liner memorabilia, autographed material, rare books and more. Expected top lots will feature a 1966 U.S. tour concert program book signed by all four Beatles, a collection of Marilyn Monroe lobby cards, an Andy Warhol audio tape archive, rare mid-20th century Edgar Bergen ventriloquist dummy models, a pair of Eames leather benches from the IBM Pavilion at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, signed Grace Kelly memorabilia and more. On Wednesday, April 20, in Philip Weiss Auctions’ Lynbrook, New York gallery, an auction dedicated mostly to stamps, coins, postcards and ephemera will be held at 10 a.m. Headlining the event will be “The Long Island Hoard,” a 50-year collection featuring multiples of key stamps and souvenir sheets, key issues and high values. For additonal information on this or future auctions, call 516-594-0731 or visit www.WeissAuctions.com.

Fooled By Fakes: California Fractional Gold Novelty? Currency? Jewelers’ charms? No matter what side of the debate you fall on, one thing is for sure California fractional gold coins are among the most heavily faked pieces of their kind. There are literally millions of fakes. They offer a fascinating glimpse into a somewhat confusing history. Many numismatists have at least one authentic piece in their collection - some even enjoy having examples of fantasies and fakes. Let’s start with the basics. There are three periods of California fractional gold, as described by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC): Period One: 1852-57 - may have been in circulation. Period Two: 1858-82 - represent jeweler-made souvenirs and some may have been in circulation. Period Three: Backdated, were made from 1883 into the 20th century and are considered “tokens.” At first these coins were made by private firms to satisfy a need, in the then-remote territory of California, for monetary values under $5, the lowest value of a California gold coin at the time. California fractional gold coins were made in denominations of 25-cents, 50-cents, and one dollar. The San Francisco Mint opened in 1854 and within a few years, they had minted enough smaller denomination coins to fulfill the need. However, that didn’t stop private firms from continuing to issue their own
coins. The Coinage Act of 1864 banned private firms from minting coins, but this wasn’t heavily enforced until 1883, which is why firms that continued to make these pieces after that year backdated them. Fractional coins minted between 1852 and 1882 include one of these denominations: dollar, Dol, Doll, Dola, D. or possibly “cents.” Only once the Secret Service more strictly enforced the Coinage Act after 1883 were denomination markings dropped from fractional coins still being made by private firms. Most of the post-1883 fakes don’t contain any of these marks, but instead say something such as “1/2 Cal Gold.” Many of the fakes are made of brass or are a gold plated base metal. On the other hand, charms made by jewelers that look like fractional gold are usually of a higher gold content (14 carat or 22 carat) than authentic fractional gold coins. Something that seems obvious but can be easily overlooked is the word

This makes them a perfect target for fraudsters who don’t have to be too concerned with producing a coin with a finely detailed appearance. Therefore, a crude piece doesn’t necessarily indicate a fake. There are lots of interesting stories revolving around the sale and seizure of fake California fractional coins that have been handed down or found in period newspaper accounts. You can read several on the PCGS CoinFacts website in the Territorial: California Fractional Gold section. Photos are of a fake coin and property of the author.

PMA Announces Major Gifts Of American Art support a broad range of initiatives in the field of contemporary art. The collection is rich in works by contemporary artists such as Cy Twombly, Philip Guston, Agnes Martin, Eva Hesse, and Paul Thek, and by other major 20th-century American artists, among them Edward Hopper, Charles Demuth, Marsden Hartley, and Horace Pippin. Dietrich was also a lifelong admirer of the 19th-century Philadelphia realist Thomas Eakins and bequeathed to the museum a major portrait by Eakins as well as photographs, drawings, and a large cache of Eakinsrelated archival materials. “Dan Dietrich’s gifts represent a remarkable act of philanthropy. I have no doubt that these generous gifts will be ranked in the same category as those made to the museum by other great donors to our collection such as Louise and Walter Arensberg, Albert E. Gallatin, and, more recently, Keith L. and Katherine Sachs. Dan will be remembered as a collector of great insight and a quiet visionary whose commitment both to contemporary art and to this city’s cultural

bequest wonderfully complement the museum’s holdings of 19th-century, modern, and contemporary art. It includes two important works by Cy Twombly: “Untitled (Roma)” (1961), and “Untitled (Bolsena)” (1969), from a series of 14 large-scale canvases that the artist painted during a stay at Lake Bolsena, located north of Rome. Both paintings exemplify the artist’s distinctive style of mark-making and the profound lyricism that characterized his work. They represent a welcome addition to a collection of Twombly’s work that already includes his celebrated series, “Fifty Days at Iliam” (1978), which has been a cornerstone of the museum’s collection since it was acquired in 1989. The donation also includes two monumental paintings by Philip Guston: “The Night” (1977), and “Kettle” (1978). Each is emblematic of Guston’s provocative - and much admired - return to figuration following several decades of work as a painter of abstractions. These are the first paintings from this important period in the artist’s career to enter the museum’s collection, and as such now enable the museum to represent fully Guston’s remarkable achievements. Dietrich was also a good friend of the artist Agnes

was a reflection of his personality and it was clear in every conversation I had with him how much he valued each and every object he had acquired. The establishment of The Daniel W. Dietrich II Fund for Excellence in Contemporary Art is a landmark in the history of the museum’s commitment to this field. It will enable us to innovate, take risks, and build capacity by developing ambitious exhibitions and programs, presenting the collection in new ways, and working collaboratively with artists,” said Carlos Basualdo, the Keith L. and Katherine Sachs Senior Curator of Contemporary Art. About Daniel W. Dietrich II Daniel W. Dietrich II lived in Chester County, Pa. He had a lifelong interest in the arts, including theater, music, film, literature, and the visual arts. He was a longtime supporter of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and was a member of the Anne d’Harnoncourt society and served as a member of the museum’s contemporary art committee. He also provided significant support to many other cultural institutions, including the Institute of Contemporary Art in Philadelphia and the Association for Public Art, for which he acquired “Symbiosis,” Roxy Paine’s large-scale sculpture located on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway.

Among the photographs by Eakins and his circle are several portraits of Walt Whitman that served as studies for an oil painting of the poet, and the frontispiece of the complete edition of “Leaves of Grass.” Sketches of the artist by his wife, Susan MacDowell Eakins, are included, as well as Eakins’s own palette and brushes and a tilttop table that is most likely the one depicted in many of his paintings, such as the museum’s “Professionals at Rehearsal.” In addition to establishing The Daniel W. Dietrich II Fund for Excellence in Contemporary Art, Mr. Dietrich’s charitable funds have also provided funding both to support the maintenance of the collection that Dietrich bequeathed to the museum and to complete the acquisition of the Paul Strand collection, which enabled the museum to add more than 3,000 works to its collection by one of the preeminent photographers of the 20th century. “A long-standing member of the museum’s contemporary art committee, Dan was an exceptionally kind and generous man whose sensibility was always attuned to artists and their work.
