Long Rifles Of The American Revolution: How Lancaster County Craftsmen Helped Win The War Historic Rock Ford Museum To Host Major New Exhibit This long rifle by John Phillip Beck, ca. 1772, is courtesy of the Historic Rock Ford Collection.

This is a Don Troiani painting depicting the First Continental Rifle Regiment in 1776.

Historic Rock Ford in Lancaster, Pa., consisting of the ca. 1794 General Edward Hand Mansion and the John J. Snyder Jr. Gallery of Early Lancaster County Decorative Arts, will host a new exhibit titled “Long Rifles of the American Revolution: How Lancaster County Craftsmen Helped Win the War” from June 1 through Oct. 30 at the Snyder Gallery. The exhibit, guest-curated by Pennsylvania long rifle authority John Kolar, will include approximately 35 Revolutionary War-era rifles from the collection of Historic Rock Ford as well as loaned rifles and related accoutrements from museums and private collectors from across the nation. Items from lending institutions include places such as Mercer Museum and the State Museum of Pennsylvania as well as from the private collections of John Kolar, Paul Ware, David Hansen, and the late Joe Kindig III, just to name a few. Of significant consideration will be two loans from the National Museum of the United States Army, the Thomas Tileston 1773 rifle as well as the 1776 seal of the 1st Continental Regiment, of which Edward Hand was its first commander and also

commissioned the fabrication of a regimental standard which contains the image on the seal. Edward Hand’s signature is on the only known surviving document bearing the original imprint from this seal. This exhibit represents the first, and perhaps the only, occasion that these weapons have been brought together in a single exhibition. It will be accented by storyboards, maps, and illustrations from the work of renowned military-history artist Don Troiani to place these artful weapons in their proper historic context. The work of such prominent Lancaster artisans as J.P. Beck, Jacob Dickert, Joel Ferree, Heinnerich Fesler, and the Bakers, which are only a few examples, will be showcased. As has been articulated in the writings of both Joe Kindig Jr. and Joe Kindig III, despite their highly functional purpose, the unique personal styles and advanced artisanship of these rifles has earned them a prominent place in early American decorative arts as fine examples among the “first truly American art form.” This exhibit will entail far more than a display of Revolutionary War weaponry. Rather, it will be presented in a narrative format to tell the story of how Lancaster County and its rifle makers played a pivotal role in supplying American rifle regiments with a weapon that provided Continued on page 2

Mid-Century Shines In Locati’s Sale James Mont Lacquered Console Cabinet Sells For $2,500 Locati LLC’s February sale concluded on Feb. 20, with particularly strong results achieved for mid-century art and design, led by “Grande Maternite” by Pablo Picasso. “We achieved pace-setting results for modern furniture,” said co-owner Michael Locati. “Pre-sale excitement surrounding excellent examples of modern furniture turned into very strong results. The Picasso also did very well.” New auction records were set for works by Philadelphia artist Helen Bershad. Seven paintings crossed the

Harrisburg Piece Ranks Among Finest From Capital City By Karl Pass Last week, I previewed a redware highlight (Bixler flower pot) to be sold at Crocker Farm. This week, we look at one of the top stoneware offerings. The sale will be held from March 25 to April 8; the online catalog went live on

March 21. For regional stoneware collectors in the midstate, water coolers rank among the finest to come out of any pottery operation in Harrisburg, Pa. Among the best is this four-gallon stoneware pedestal-based example with sliptrailed cobalt double tulip floral decoration, stamped “WM. MOYER / HARRISBURG PA,” made ca. 185861. Complementing the rare pedestal base is a classical, urnlike form including a coved rim and open handles with impressed rosettes at the terminals. The piece stands 18.25 inches high. The cooler’s exquisite sliptrailed decoration draws inspiration from the New York potting tradition and is attributed to Shem Thomas, a potter trained by Thompson Harrington of Lyons, Continued on page 4

BIGGER & BETTER!

Leger Painting Sells For $375,000 Clarke Auction Gallery billed its Feb. 6 auction as an “Awesome Estates Auction,” and the sale more than lived up to expectations, seeing robust performers across the board. The undisputed star of the auction though was a Fernand Leger painting that attained $375,000, including the buyer’s premium. Sold fairly early on in the sale, the painting had already attracted quite a bit of attention before the auction, shortly after the catalog went online. The

bidding action on this lot may not have been very dramatic, but four very determined bidders drove the price up and up, making for a stellar result. The ca. 1954 gouache, titled “Les loisirs,” depicted figures engaged in leisure activities and was a motif the artist often repeated throughout his career. This work is markedly similar in composition to his lithograph, The Chinese jade table dividers realized $11,875. “Le Picnic.” Opening at $125,000, the painting steadily climbed, and within a few minutes, one

the accuracy and flexibility to successfully overturn the tactics of musket and bayonet wielded by rigid columns of troops that had previously ruled the battlefields of 18thcentury Europe. It is particularly appropriate that this exhibit will take place at the Rock Ford estate

the auction made a good showing, particularly the Asian arts category. Highlights included a pair of Asian (probably Chinese) spinach jade table dividers that doubled high estimate to bring $11,875 and an Asian red lacquered and giltwood carved wood Buddha that attained $7,500, well over its $400-$600 estimate. Each of the hands in the 12-arm figure was in a different position with one holding an open vessel and another holding a leaf. Rounding out the auction were a Reed & Barton Francis I sterling tea service that sold comfortably within estimate at $6,875 and an Art Nouveau vase attributed to Raoul Francois Larche that was gilt decorated and also made $6,875. Selling at $7,500 was an antique Continental 18-carat gold and enamel decorated hinged box, most likely Italian, with a central Venetian scene exhibiting masterful use of enamel in the sunset and surrounded by a robin’s egg blue border. All prices reported include the 25-percent buyer’s premium. Clarke Auction Gallery is located at 2372 Boston Post Road, Larchmont, N.Y. bidder was left standing, a private U.S. art collector. “We already knew we had something special on our hands, but once the painting hit the internet, we were inundated with phone calls, emails and a lot of interest,” said owner and auctioneer Ronan Clarke. “I am thrilled to sell such a fine and important painting, but the overall results of the auction are even more exciting in demonstrating market strength and buyers’ continued appreciation for fine antiques and art.” The Leger was but one painting in a strong group of fine art offerings that achieved hearty results. Standout works crossed oceans, centuries and mediums, from a signed Alexandre Cabanel (French, 1823-89) painting, “Contemplation or The Italian Servant,” that sold well over estimate at $55,000 to a map-drawing of Las Vegas by Saul Steinberg (American, 191499), ink, colored pencil, and graphite on paper, from 1958, that earned $40,000. According to the Saul Steinberg Foundation, the drawing’s original title was “Saul Steinberg Stops for the Night.” Three-dimensional art was prominently featured, and bronzes especially found favor with buyers, led by a fine example by Angel Botello (Puerto Rico, 1913-86), “Girl With Ponytail.” The signed and numbered work (10/12) stood 13.5 inches tall and fetched $18,750. Another fine bronze crossing the block was a large and well-executed abstracted sculpture of figures by M. Hudecesk, dated 1967 on the base. Measuring 27by-25 inches, the powerful piece also earned $18,750. As the auction took place about a week before Valentine’s Day, buyers clearly had gift shopping on their minds, and a signed Ilias Lalaounis 18-carat gold necklace certainly would fit the bill. Going out just over its high estimate at $10,000, the lavalier style necklace featured a handhammered and matte finish to beads and the drop pendant can be unscrewed for an alternative look. Many lots outperformed their estimates, and even if they didn’t score five-figures prices, the sum total of these items that achieved good prices made for a strong auction. Is A Copy Of John Madden Football Released In 1990 Really Worth $480,000?

understands the collectibles market is obviously wise to know that something is amiss in the market for factory-sealed and graded video games (spoiler alert: market manipulation). It should also be noted that the first version of John Madden Football was not released on a home video game console. It was released originally for home computers, and, ironically, I see none of these copies selling for anywhere near $480,000 at present time. Perhaps that is because they have yet to start third-party grading for vintage computer games or the crafty market manipulators haven’t gotten around to bidding up these items as of yet? Better I end this article here rather than give anyone more ideas as to how to inflate the market for up and coming collectibles at present time. But if you do have any factory-sealed vintage video games, now may just be a very good time to sell.

In the effort to be as transparent as possible, it should be noted that I am not a huge sports fan. Regular readers of this column have commented that I do not discuss the sports memorabilia market as often as I should. I fully admit that is usually on purpose, as generally there is something else in the overall antiques and collectibles trade I would much rather write about. However, every once in a while, I am pulled into this market due to the announcement of a record-breaking sale or just because it helps convey a fundamental point about how markets in the trade can and do change. In this instance, I will admit my reason is the former and not the latter. Sadly, on Dec. 28, 2021, football personality and sports legend John Madden died at the age of 85. Given his age, the news should not have been that alarming. Still, anyone who remembers John Madden knows he had a larger than life personality. I actually enjoyed his appearance in all those hardware store commercials he once appeared in (like I said, I am not a sports fan). The announcement of John Madden’s death had a neutral effect on me, but I

toward the end of the console’s life cycle. Low and behold, Heritage Auctions featured an original, factory-sealed John Madden game in this auction, and it was the original Sega Genesis version that came packaged in a cardboard box. The game was graded by WATA Games and was awarded a 9.2 (near mint minus) condition rating with an A+ factory seal. When I first saw the game listed in the auction, I thought nothing of it, but the thought of it at least reaching tens of thousands of dollars to me was not mind boggling. After all, vintage and factory-sealed graded video games are in a massive speculative bubble right now. After the auction ended I was reviewing some of the ending prices and decided to check on this particular game. The final bid almost knocked me out of my chair. This particular factorysealed game, released in 1990 no less, sold in 9.2 condition for $480,00,, which includes the buyer’s premium that Heritage Auctions charges. Words could not describe my reaction and I’ll leave out some of the four-letter expletives that came out of my mouth to spare my editor. Looking back on the sale, I should not be that surprised. First, John Madden Football can be considered an iconic video game franchise. And while it does not rank up with Super Mario Bros. or The Legend of Zelda, in my opinion, I do know that some fans would disagree. Second, the death of John Madden could have easily caused some starry-eyed fan boy with the means to buy something like this to make a move out of emotion. This is why I often caution against collectors buying any form of memorabilia after a celebrity, athlete, entertainer, or artist dies (prices are usually inflated). Lastly, I will admit that the chances of finding a factory-sealed case of original John Madden Football games for the Sega Genesis lying around are slim to none compared to some of the other video games that have soared past the mid- to high six figure range. Still, is this game really worth $480,000, especially in 9.2 graded condition? Anyone who

can imagine that for fans everywhere who loved his life’s work, it greatly affected them. A month after John Madden’s death, on Jan. 28, 2022, Heritage Auctions hosted its January 2022 Video Games Signature Auction. These auctions draw in a lot of collectors and also more than a few starryeyed speculators who will pay top dollar to acquire the latest and greatest collectible video games. Most of these items are factory-sealed vintage video games graded by WATA Games. I have written extensively about the insanity of prices that are occurring in this market at present. It was during this sale that a factory-sealed and graded copy of a John Madden Football came up for bid. If you don’t know the story of John Madden Football, it is an immensely popular series of video games that were first released on home computer systems and then made their way to home video game consoles. The first edition of John Madden for home video game consoles was released on the Sega Genesis in 1990 by Electronic Arts, and it came packaged in a cardboard box. This is important to note because Sega Genesis video games were known for being very well packaged inside hard and sturdy plastic clamshell cases. The plastic clamshell case offered superior protection for the actual video game cartridge and instruction manual. These hard plastic cases also usually stand up better over time when compared to cardboard boxes. Very few Sega Genesis games were released in cardboard, and most were released in this format by either third party companies at the beginning of the console’s life cycle or by Sega

Online Seller Ruby Lane Outlines Growth A James Mont lacquered console cabinet sold for $2,500.

More and more antique dealers are creating their own websites, selling through online sites such as Etsy, eBay, and others. And some are using Ruby Lane. Even for a platform as technically sophisticated as www.Rubylane.com, doing business the old-fashioned way can bring a big pay off. Ruby Lane is excited to share the results of its first 30-percent off Ruby Red Tag sale for 2022, which was billed the

“30% Off Spring Up! 96 HR Ruby Red Tag Sale.” Ruby Lane and its community of shops successfully managed to cross the $1 million mark in realized sales. Starting on Feb. 25, it ended March 1, and featured more than 96,000 items listed at 30 percent off and was excitingly followed by heavy traffic and engagement throughout the course of the sale. Since 1998, Ruby Lane has been a staple for the vintage

and antiques community, and the flagship “Ruby Red Tag Sale” has been a success since its debut in 2011. Over the years and through sales and events like these, Ruby Lane has cultivated an audience of buyers including collectors, dealers, designers, and general aficionados. This sale and its success for the Ruby Lane community of dealers marks a milestone achievement, considering the long-term effects that the

pandemic has had on the antiques and vintage industry and global economy as a whole. What’s more, the overwhelmingly positive response to the recent sale has come on the heels of the busy Presidents’ Day weekend, where sellers reported good sales and were encouraged with a good first quarter of the calendar year. 2 LIFE ANTIQUES featuring the cupola of the original capitol building in Harrisburg. The cooler was illustrated and discussed in Jeanette Lasansky’s book, “Made of Mud: Stoneware Potteries in Central Pennsylvania, 18341929,” published in 1977. “We’ve never had the pleasure to offer a Harrisburg pedestal cooler before, and two are in this sale, from two different consignors. They are extremely rare,” commented Luke Zipp of Crocker Farm. For additional information, call Crocker Farm at 410-472-2016 or visit www.crockerfarm.com.

Related slip-trailed floral designs can be found on pieces bearing the maker’s mark, “JOHN YOUNG & CO. / HARRISBURG, PA,” used by partners John Young and Shem Thomas at their Filbert Street Pottery, ca. 1856-58. This cooler is evidence that Thomas, who remained in Harrisburg after his pottery closed, worked for William Moyer. Slip-trailed decoration is virtually nonexistent on Moyer stoneware, evidently spared only for the company’s finest work. The reverse side of the cooler features an impressed seal

Oil Paintings By Canadian “Group Of Seven” Artists Franz Johnston, Alexander Young Jackson Score Top Honors Canadiana And Folk Art Online-Only Sale Held Feb. 12

An oil-on-board rendering by Canadian “Group of Seven” artist Franz Johnston (18881949), titled “The Battlement, Lake of the Woods,” sold for $25,960.

$415,714. Prices quoted in this report are in Canadian dollars and include an 18-percent buyer’s premium. The oil-on-panel by Alexander Young Jackson, titled “St. Lawrence South Shore Village” (ca. 1945), measuring 10.5-by-13.5 inches, was the auction’s top lot. It sailed past its high estimate of $28,000 to bring $47,200. The painting exhibited vibrant color and detail and had gallery labels on the back for Klinkhoff in Montreal and Thielsen in London, Ontario. The oil-on-board rendering by Franz Johnston, titled “The Battlement, Lake of the Woods,” measured 13-by-10.5 inches and sold within estimate for $25,960. It was a rare example, with strong brush strokes and content typical of “The Group Impressionism.” Johnston resigned from the “Group of Seven” in 1924 as his style evolved more toward realism. The auction’s categories included folk art, furniture, art, tools, Canadiana, architectural

items, vintage toys, pottery and stoneware, and textiles. Also featured was part two of the Marty Osler collections. Part one, held in April 2021, was led by a selection of decoys, fishing reels and rods, many by Hardy Bros. of England. Part two focused primarily on Canadiana and decorative arts. “Folk art proved to be a huge attraction,” said Ben Lennox of Miller & Miller Auctions Ltd., who added 23 of the top 30 lots blew past their high estimates, supported by

high water marks being established for Canadian and American folk artists such as Edmond Chatigny, Joe Norris, Joseph Sleep, Everett Lewis (the husband of Maud Lewis), Purvis Young and Howard Finster. “The anticipation and excitement leading up to the sale was evident by strong pre-bidding and electric chatter on social media,” Lennox pointed out. “That chatter continued post-sale as buyers eagerly expressed their joy
