A Hidden Treasure Awaits

Quality Dealers S923828

I follow a lot of collector boards online, as there is a lot of good information to be found. As a former collector and dealer in military items, I am particularly interested in those forums that address fake militaria. Now if you don’t collect military items, please stay with me, as the points here are valid for other areas of collecting. A lot of militaria was brought home as souvenirs of conflicts. My grandparents, both veterans of the Great War, brought home captured

Change number two came as a result of the opening of markets in the Orient and Eastern Europe. Until the 1990s, fakery generally focused upon high-end items. Why? Because the cost of producing the fake was high and as a result there needed to be a sufficient return on the reproduction to make it worthwhile. This changed when access to small shops in these areas meant that copies could now be made and sold of even basic items. Sometimes the intent was sort of noble as many German items had been denazified at the end of the war by removing the swastika and so producing “new” copies of original pieces enabled collectors to restore pieces. More often than not, however, these cheaply made copies were wholesaled to dealers and resold to the unsuspecting. The next column will be the end of the story and where we are today.

surplus than expensive collectibles. The high end of the market was reserved for items produced by the Germans in WWII or the Confederacy during the Civil War. Vanquished enemies, whether Confederate or German, have always commanded more money to many collectors. This is not a political statement but rather reflecting the economic demands for these pieces. As a result, fakery in these areas began a long time ago. By the 1990s, the economy was rolling and everyone was becoming a collector. This led to not only a high demand for the rare items but also an equally big new push for other military collectibles. The 50th anniversary of WWII fueled this even further and all of a sudden the surplus gear became high ticket. Simple American helmets that could previously be purchased for $25 were now in the hundreds of dollars.

German military equipment as remembrances of the conflict. This has happened in probably every war over time from the ancient to the present. That being said, during WWII, there are well-documented accounts of made-up items being produced for sale or trade. Why? Because guys in the rear wanted souvenirs as much as those in the front and so demand outstripped supply. I just read this morning about how during the Vietnam War, a steady supply of fake North Vietnamese captured battle flags were made up by small shops for sale to GIs who then sent them back to Subic Bay in the Philippines for resale. So our story of military faking begins during the actual conflicts. The next step out is the changing nature of collecting. When I first began collecting militaria, WWI and WWII American Army field gear (helmets, ammo pouches, etc.) was regarded more like
