In this section, as with the later Americana portion, artwork sets the tone, particularly with two Marc Chagall lithographs, a colorful abstract by Marcel Mouly, and a Marcel Dyf floral still-life. After a grouping of Oriental carpets, Pook & Pook will present classic artists such as Andrew Wyeth, Barclay Rubincam, Bela DeTirefort, Harry Leith-Ross, and Ben Austrian. A watercolor and gouache depiction of Josephine Baker by Erté, the artist synonymous with Art Deco, adds interest, as does a stunning realist still-life by John F. Francis and a powerful coastal scene by Thomas Birch.
From fine to folk art, this sale is a powerhouse for all things Pennsylvania German. A Jacob Botz scherenschnitte fraktur in pristine condition is one prime example. A comparable Botz is in the Philadelphia Free Library’s collection. This intricate cutwork piece maintains vibrant colors and detailed watercolor styling with very minor losses. Another highlight will be an impressive Charles Munch of Union County, Pa., ink-andwatercolor fraktur, with two elaborate vignettes of a farmer plowing his field and a ship at sea. Pook & Pook Inc. will also present a work by the renowned Quaker artist, Edward Hicks, of The Peaceable Kingdom fame. Hicks’ oil-on-poplar panel depicts a portrait of Andrew Jackson backed by two flags above a banner reading “The Old Democrat.” This treasure of

Swann Galleries’ Sale Of Printed And Manuscript African Americana Breaks Multiple Records Previously Unrecorded Photograph Of Harriet Tubman Reaches $161,000 On Thursday, March 30, Swann Galleries’ annual auction of Printed and Manuscript African Americana exceeded $1 million for the first time in the department’s 20-plus year history. The success was largely due to interest surrounding a carte-devisite album from the 1860s that contained a previously unknown photograph of Harriet Tubman. The album topped the sale, selling for $161,000, above a pre-sale high estimate of $30,000. Collector Anecdotes And Antics The Influential Secret Of “Hot Toys”
By Shawn Surmick The 1990s can easily be considered one of the most influential decades of the modern-era collectibles trade. Thanks in part to the advent of the internet, and more specifically eBay, the way we buy and sell has been transformed. This had a tremendous impact on the antiques and collectibles trade, and entrepreneurs took notice. First came the platforms that allowed us to buy and sell. This gave way to the rise of internet-based auction sites. After eBay unilaterally won this battle, entrepreneurs changed the way we pay for our goods and services online. PayPal became the preferred way to get paid online. Meanwhile, Amazon would launch a well-executed online offensive and become the proverbial Walmart of the internet and quite successfully worked to dethrone Walmart’s own brick and mortar stores as a result of its online success. But the 1990s held another development that would impact the trade even further. “Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace” would be released to enthusiast fans in
May of 1999 regardless of many mediocre reviews. Despite being considered one of the worst films in the entire “Star Wars” movie saga, “Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace” did something that no other film could do since the original “Star Wars” movie premiered in 1978: The film gave rise to a growing interest in vintage toys as serious collectibles. By the time “The Phantom Menace” was released, original “Star Wars” toys and action figures created by Kenner between 1978 and 1984 were starting to see massive price increases from serious collectors who demanded the best and mostsought-after toys from the original vintage toy line. It was also at this time that demand for other vintage toy lines like “Transformers,” “Masters of the Universe,” and “G.I. Joe” experienced a renaissance of sorts by nostalgia-based collectors wanting to recapture a piece of their fleeting youths. Due to these developments, entrepreneurs took notice and some took calculated risks that would ensure financial reward. It was at this time that a lot of higher-end auction houses became well known thanks in part to the world wide web’s dominance in American homes. Some of these businesses have a wellknown online presence even today. Heritage Auction Galleries, located out of Texas, is one such example, and others followed suit. Both Hake’s and Morphy’s Auctions have maintained large online presences that have paid dividends to both auction firms. Yet some entrepreneurs
took a much riskier approach outside of the predictably profitable e-commerce auction venues. Howard Chan was one such individual, and the company he would come to create would be well known among higher-end toy collectors. Possibly after witnessing the premium prices being paid on the secondary market for rare and expensive vintage toys, Chan had a unique vision. What if he could create a unique higher-end toy company that created lifelike action figures that sold for a significant premium based on popular licensed properties? His company was started in Hong Kong and would be known as Hot Toys. The company would produce incredibly realistic and almost lifelike action figures that stood much taller than the simple 3.75-inch figures created by companies like Kenner and Hasbro. Hot Toys would instead rely on talented highly paid artists who would create intricate designs with multiple points of realistic articulation. The works of art they created were manufactured in extremely low production numbers, usually in the high hundreds or in some cases the low thousands, and came in detailed packaging and unique stylized boxes. They would retail at the low end for a few hundred dollars each and increase in price from there. Sideshow Collectibles would become the premier distributor of the toys for the U.S., market and preorders would be strongly encouraged due to the low production
runs that usually sold out before their release date. “Star Wars” would be a popular licensee for the company, but so would other popular pop culture properties like D.C. Comics and Marvel Comic characters, as well as obscure movie properties such as “Predator,” “Alien,” “Robocop,” and “The Terminator.” By the early 2000s, a speculative secondary market had developed where some of the toys sold for significant markups from their original retail prices. This was short lived, however, as the company decided to release new designs of often discontinued figures, which has had an inverse effect on retired products. Today, the company has a growing number of hardcore enthusiasts who have no problem paying $200 to $400 for each sought-after toy created. This has caused tremendous controversy in the marketplace, as some see the designs as nothing more than a financial gimmick to trick investmentminded collectors into
buying artificially scarce products that are easily released again and again. Still, some of the earlier releases have continued to increase exponentially on the secondary market, and some modern releases increase in price too. Whether that will be the case with later released figures has yet to be determined, but due to their high initial cost, most unopened figures tend to hold a large portion of their value on the fickle secondary marketplace, assuming the collector has good tastes and buys from proven pop culture franchises. There is no denying that Hot Toys has single-handedly changed the way higher-end toys and collectibles are marketed and sold, and for that reason alone they should be praised. Still, just by looking over how many new releases the company is planning on creating in 2017, one has to wonder if the secondary market will soon be cannibalized by more modern renditions of everyone’s favorite characters being released again and
again. After all, just how many different versions of “Captain America” does a collector need even if each one is based on a different design? Will the market for Hot Toys continue to expand or will modern-day collectors be left holding items that tomorrow’s collectors just don’t care all that much for at a price of several hundred dollars each? Time will tell. Until then, I would not be putting all my money in artificially scarce figures made for the high-end collectors’ market, but you have to admit that these are some of the best and highly detailed toys ever created. And that alone may be enough to defy the odds to become something of a highly-sought-after investment-grade collectible decades from now. Of course, history may remember these toys as nothing more than overstylized pop culture banter bought by connoisseurs hoping for so much more. Regardless, every hardcore toy collector needs at least one Hot Toys release, and Howard Chan’s team has you covered.

Rookwood pieces that have been made straight from the vintage originals that have no copyright protection. One of the rarest Rookwood tiles is the rabbit tile, which naturally makes it a target for copies. Most of these reproductions have only paper labels that are easily removed, but some companies do mark their tiles superficially. However, most of stamped marks can also be removed by scraping or chemicals; no one would want to remove an authentic Rookwood mark, so if you see a scraped, filed or otherwise altered area on the back, another maker’s mark has been removed. In other cases, the tile may have had some type of backing applied to it or it may be framed, which would prevent potential buyers from seeing whether the tile has a true Rookwood mark. If the piece is marked and priced as authentic Rookwood, make sure to see the back before buying. Sloppy-looking Rookwood marks are usually a good sign of a fake; many times, these poorly made marks are on one-of-a-kind pieces, which are typically fakes and have no
year or model number. Small details, like the tiny hook shapes at the end of the flame mark, are usually missing on fake pieces. Collectible in their own right but not considered Rookwood are unfinished pieces that late-19th century women would buy as blanks, then paint at home. Although the bodies of these pieces were made by Rookwood, the hobbyists who painted them were not Rookwood artists, so the pieces are not classified as authentic Rookwood. (Ironically, the woman who founded Rookwood, Maria Longworth Nichols, was herself a hobbyist who enjoyed painting ceramic blanks.)

With strong standards of workmanship that produced some of the highest quality, award-winning pottery of its time, Rookwood Pottery spans the styles of deco, art nouveau, Victorian, Oriental and arts and crafts. First founded in 1880, the company was fastidious in its demand for perfection, considering items with even extremely minor flaws as “seconds and marking them as such. As Rookwood moved through the decades and included popular styles of each period, they also introduced new glazes, including Matte, Standard, Vellum, Iris, Sea Green and more. A rare early glaze that was used only for a short time because of its instability was Tiger Eye, which is recognizable by its gold streaks. Until 1905, each piece was crafted and painted by artists; then mass production was introduced, so no more pieces contained artists’ signatures. Rookwood sales suffered during the Depression, WWI and WWII, and they finally stopped production in 1967. Then in 1982, as the company was about to be sold to a manufacturer overseas, an American art pottery collector purchased Rookwood. Production was limited to small amounts of pottery using original trademarks. Rookwood was sold once again in 2004, and production was moved back to Cincinnati, Ohio. As of today, Rookwood Pottery Company is in full swing using original molds and glazes with updated equipment. The company is once again “forward-thinking, working with top artists to

create high quality products and getting lots of positive attention. With new Rookwood pieces made from old molds currently in production, it could be confusing to determine whether a piece for resale online is new or old, or possibly an unauthorized copy. This is where the mark plays in important part - most old Rookwood contains one of three marks: Rookwood, R and P reversed, and the RP mark with flames. However, there are lesser-known marks, including an incised or painted RPCOMLN, a rare anchor stamp, raised ribbon or banner stamp (1882), an impressed kiln (1883) and a few others. New marks only use the RP mark with flames, but the production year is written in Arabic numbers, whereas old pieces used Roman numerals. Secondly, the mark in the old pieces was impressed into the clay, whereas the mark is etched into the glaze in the newer pieces. Authentic Rookwood pieces have marks any collector can research and decipher; you’ll find marks related to glaze and material type as well as size, date and shape identification and more, including trial pieces. A light “X was scratched into “seconds that have flaws (sometimes very minor), but oddly, some unflawed pieces are also marked with an “X. The longstanding explanation is that because seconds were less expensive when new, some unscrupulous people handmarked pieces they wanted with an “X in order to demand a lower price. So don’t just go by the mark, check the piece carefully for flaws - or lack thereof. There are many copies of

The 59th edition of the Fisherville show last October was considered among the best ever by the promotor. Perfect weather, record attendance, and a lot of exhibiting dealers reporting new highs for sales. The 60th anniversary edition of the Fishersville/ Shenandoah Antique Expo will be a great event during the spring antiquing season, being the biggest indoor and outdoor show in the Mid-Atlantic region. Over 300 dealers from Florida to Maine will be exhibiting on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, May 19, 20, and 21. Show hours on Friday and Saturday will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The show is held in the Augusta Expo at 277 Expo Road, Fishersville, Va.
Admission will be $10 on Friday and $5 Saturday and Sunday. A three-day pass for $10, along with free parking, is available. The Augusta Expo is off of I-64, exit 91, not far from Waynesboro. The exhibitors showcase everything from 18th and 19th century English and American antiques, country Americana pieces, and many other quality antiques to an expansive range of intriguing, interesting and often hard-to-find collectibles. True to form, Heritage Promotions is lining up another big show and recruiting top quality vendors. Ray Stokes, one of the show promoters, says he looks for

Among the top results of Leslie Hindman Auctioneers’ Asian Works of Art Sale was a scroll painting with the signature of Qi Baishi, which sold for $269,000 to an Eastern Chinese buyer. Following record-breaking sales during New York’s Asia Week, the March 20 auction showed strong results across all media and time periods that demonstrate the return to buoyant buying by Greater China as witnessed industrywide over 2016. Collectors from mainland China, Taiwan, Canada, the U.S. West Coast and the United Kingdom dominated participation in the March sale and pushed top lots, which included paintings, porcelain and jade, past high estimates. Another scroll painting, “Galloping Horse,” attributed to Xu Beihong sold for $125,000 to a private collector in California. A second Xu Beihong attribution, also depicting a horse, sold for $68,750 to the trade in China. These scrolls, along with the Qi Baishi, came from the estate of Mr. Julius Wei Wu Xue, of Kenilworth, Ill. These paintings were fresh-to-themarket, which, along with their provenance, contributed to the results. An additional scroll painting from a private Chicago collector that performed well was Shang Rui’s “Yun He Tan Quan” (Springs Exploration on Cloudy Gully), which sold for $75,000 to a dealer in China. A landscape painting with the signature of Yan Wengui sold for $42,500 to a Canadian collector. The sale included two Peking glass vases, one a Qianlong period example of squat form that sold for $106,250. The second example in a baluster form sold for $35,000. Both sold to buyers in California. Porcelain also performed well and included a

Let’s All Be Americans Now: The Music Of World War I Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century “Over there, over there, Send the word, send the word, over there! That the Yanks are coming, the Yanks are coming, The drums rum-tumming everywhere!” George M. Cohan, 1917 And, as of April 6, 1917, the Yanks finally were coming. That’s when Congress officially approved a declaration of war on the German Empire. The decision of 100 years ago resulted in an outpouring of patriotic expression not seen since the Civil War. This time, however, the nation joined together in facing an external enemy. Defeating that enemy called not only for military
might, but also for a unified effort on the home front. Carrying the banner: American popular music. Prior to the war, popular song themes followed predictable routes: heart-tugging love ballads, paeans to bygone days and lands, and comic turns. Now, new themes emerged, with those of the past adapted to suit present needs. Major categories included the following: • Recruiting songs: “If I Had a Son for Each Star in Old Glory, (Uncle Sam, I’d Give Them All to You).” • Peppy morale boosters: “Liberty Bell, It’s Time to Ring Again.”
• Romanticized looks at military life: “The Rose of No Man’s Land” (a tribute to the Red Cross nurse). • Visions of life after wartime: “Your Lips Are No Man’s Land But Mine.” • Weepers: “Hello Central, Give Me No Man’s Land.” • Comic novelties: “Would You Rather Be a Colonel with an Eagle on Your Shoulder or a
Private with a Chicken on Your Knee?” While numerous composers churned out suited-tothe-times songs during the war years, two stand out among the rest: George M. Cohan and Irving Berlin. From the early 1900s onward, Cohan took the country by storm, his stage productions including such rousers as “Give My Regards to Broadway” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” But just one song - 1917’s “Over

A riff on one of the era’s most popular musical styles was “The Ragtime Soldier Man,” by Irving Berlin. A united effort for victory was Berlin’s “Let’s All Be Americans Now.”
He wrote it, and he performed it, in Yip Yip Yaphank: Irving Berlin’s “Oh! How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning.”
