“In May We P l a y ” Bertoia’s Will Celebrate Spring On May 8 And 9 With 1,400 Lots Of Toys And Tr a i n s he list of high-profile collectors who’ve sold their toys at Bertoia’s is a long and impressive one that includes Stan Sax, Donald Kaufman, Dick Claus, Donal Markey, and, most recently, Max Berry—all giants of the antique toy hobby. But sometimes the Bertoia family likes to host an auction that draws from a broad base of collectors with many different interests and specialties. On Friday and Saturday, May 8 and 9, just such a sale will take place at Bertoia’s gallery, with approximately 1,400 diverse lots that encompass the categories of cast iron, tin, paper on wood,

represented, and many are examples that have never been seen before at any Bertoia sales. Highlighting the light pressed steel grouping is part one of the late Bill Moody’s Metalcraft advertising trucks. “Bill was a very wellknown and well-liked collector,” said Bertoia. “He had one of the best Metalcraft collections known.” Within the colorful selection are vans, dump trucks, tow trucks and more. Some exhibit attractive Art Deco styling. The lineup is joined by an abundance of light pressed steel trucks and cars by other manufacturers that collectors pursue, “from Kingsbury to early Daytons and everything in between,” said Bertoia. Additionally, there is an outstanding grouping of early trolleys, both in light pressed steel and tin.

You don’t know what will come in when you have so many different consignors involved. It’s a chance to dip into many different collections and see the great toys other collectors have found over the years,” said Bertoia. The cast-iron automotive section includes more than 150 vehicles such as autos, buses, farm and work vehicles, as well as numerous toy gas stations, mostly of tin. Both American and European stations are

After the lighter vehicles have found new homes, it will be time for the big boys, the heavy pressed steel toys, to strut their stuff. One of the highlights is an extremely rare Buddy ‘L’ tugboat. Another gem is an extremely rare Hispano-Suiza pedal car with a bonnet that lifts to expose a simulated engine. “We were very lucky to get this car, which came to us from a European consignor. You just don’t find pedal cars like this one here in the states,” said Bertoia. The same collector consigned a collection of more than a dozen Hispano-Suiza toy cars, manufactured either in Spain or at the company’s auxiliary factory in France. Each is a handpainted, faithful representation of a real Hispano-Suiza car of the 1920s. One of the cars is 26 inches long and is so rare, it was not even known to Rich Bertoia, who has spent decades in the toy hobby and auction business. “This is a car for connoisseurs because it’s only likely to turn up once in a lifetime,” he remarked. “Because of its size, you have to wonder if maybe it was a dealer display.” Another special piece in the Hispano-Suiza collection definitely was a dealer display and was cut

Many of the trains were manufactured in the 1930s, and everything in the collection is in excellent or pristine condition. A number of coaches will be offered in lots, and some have their original boxes. Cann also collected cast-iron steam engines, especially those by Marklin, and had many rare examples, such as the Crocodile. In addition to the Cann collection, train aficionados can look forward to bidding on 25 lots of very rare, early Ives trains and train-car lots. It will also be final-boarding time for trains from the collection of the late Frank Loveland. “We will be selling trains that Frank held personally to the end, including a Carlisle & Finch derrick, and boxed summer trolley,” said Bertoia. A Voltamp Edna Interurban Trolley will travel with a few of Loveland’s Voltamp entries, as well.
Other featured items in the sale include an array of clockwork toys by Lehmann, Martin and Marx and stellar pieces from Jeanne Bertoia’s private collection of figural cast-iron doorstops. “Collectors should expect some surprises in this sale, because there definitely will be some,” said Bertoia. “This will be a very enjoyable way to say goodbye to winter and hello to spring. We look forward to welcoming all of our friends at the gallery.” Bertoia’s “In May We Play” two-day May 8 and 9 sale will take place at Bertoia Auctions’ gallery located at 2141 DeMarco Drive in Vineland, N.J. The Brandywine River Museum Of Art Presents “Horace Pippin: The Way I See It” The Brandywine River Museum of Art is organizing “Horace Pippin: The Way I See It,” a major exhibition of over 65 paintings of his work assembled from museums and private collections across the United States. One of the leading figures of 20th-century art, Horace Pippin (1888-1946) is known for his bold, colorful and expressive paintings of family life, history, religion and war. The Brandywine River Museum of Art will be the only venue for this landmark exhibition. It will run from Saturday, April 25, to Sunday, July 19. Taking its title from Horace Pippin’s response to his own question about what made him a great painter: “I paint it exactly the way it is and exactly the way I see it,” the exhibition will look closely at Pippin as an artist. Pippen remained independent, creating and upholding a unique aesthetic sensibility, vividly depicting a range of subject matter, from intimate family moments and bold floral still lifes to powerful scenes of war, history and religion that comment on issues such as racism and social justice. Pippin was born in West Chester, Pa., less than 10 miles from the Brandywine, but grew up in Goshen, N.Y. He eventually returned to West Chester in 1920 after serving in World War I as part of the renowned AfricanAmerican regiment known as the “Harlem Hellfighters.” Despite a war injury that severely limited the use of his right arm, Pippin created an illustrated journal of his war experience on his return home, and by 1930 had begun teaching himself to paint in oil using his left arm as a support for his right hand. He was first championed locally by N.C. Wyeth and the art critic Christian Brinton in 1937, when they saw his work on display in a West Chester storefront. Pippin was quickly embraced nationally by museums, galleries, critics and collectors who valued the selftaught artist’s style-characterized in his time as “primitive” or “naive” for its perceived pureness of expression. Patrons ranged from Albert Barnes and Edith Halpert to Hollywood figures such as Charles Laughton and Edward G. Robinson. Among the works in the exhibition is “The End of the War: Starting Home” (1930-33), a seminal work representing the horrors of a war that Pippin would later say “brought out all the art in me.” A muted palette with bursts of red

the artist often drew upon his own life as subject matter. “In Interior” (1944), a family is together in the same room, yet each member seems lost in their own world. Pippin juxtaposes bold outlines, brilliant passages of color and nuanced texture and pattern in this candid portrayal of family life. He also created several paintings that depicted everyday life in West Chester. A particularly captivating example is “Harmonizing” (1944), which portrays an African-American a cappella quartet singing on a street corner. Within this townscape, Pippin focuses attention on the singers by contrasting them and their brilliantly-colored clothing against the stark pattern of the fence, over which a church steeple seems to survey the scene. Religious themes also held particular

significance for Pippin. Among the most compelling is the theme of the Holy Mountain, on which he created four paintings from 1944 through 1946. Inspired in part by Edward Hicks’s Peaceable Kingdom series, Pippin focused on the Old Testament text by Isaiah that told of God’s founding of his city on the Holy Mountain. Pippin’s interpretation, however, goes beyond the biblical into a reflection on the nature of war, peace and racial injustice, with Pippin tying the biblical passage to historical and contemporary events. There is a stunning dissonance between the Arcadian foreground in which Pippin juxtaposes animals and man inhabiting the verdant landscape and the frightening and transgressive happenings in the dense forest beyond. In the first three paintings in the series, Pippin depicts soldiers running through the forest, small grave markers commemorating where some of their comrades have fallen, and bombs dropping from military planes overhead. Pippin wrote that the series was his answer to his dreams of “peace in the land.” “Horace Pippin: The Way I See It” will be accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalogue featuring essays by exhibition curator Audrey Lewis, and guest authors Judith Dolkart, Jacqueline Francis, Kerry James Marshall, Anne Monahan, and Edward Puchner. It will be available in the Museum shop and online at www.brandywine.org. The exhibition is made possible by the Exelon Foundation and PECO. Additional support was provided by the Davenport Family Foundation, the Wyeth Foundation for American Art, and Dr. Benjamin Hammond. The Brandywine River Museum of Art, located on U.S. Route 1 in Chadds Ford, Pa., is open daily (except Christmas Day) from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for seniors ages 65 and over, and $6 for students and children ages 6 to 12. evokes the sense of desolation amidst the chaos of battle. It is Pippin’s first known oil painting, demonstrating his early method of building layer upon layer of pigment in an almost sculptural manner. Pippin was an astute observer and well-informed about the subjects he undertook, especially history. He completed two major series with historical themes, one on the life of the abolitionist John Brown, and the other on Abraham Lincoln. “John Brown Going to His Hanging” (1942) is one of Pippin’s most visually and emotionally engaging paintings. Brown is portrayed at the center, sitting atop his coffin while being driven to the gallows. While the crowd looks on, a figure to the far right stares out from the painting, representing Pippin’s mother, who was said to have witnessed the event. Pippin’s art is highly personal, and

enthusiasm being generated with each passing sale. The most expensive marbles are handmade marbles in nearmint or better condition. Some of these marbles can sell for five figures, with the rarest of the rare selling for over $10,000 each! Machine-made marbles are also starting to set new records with some of the most colorful specimens attracting bids in the hundreds to thousands of dollars each. Unfortunately for beginning collectors, the hobby of marble collecting can appear very complicated. Due to increased prices on the secondary markets, a slew of fakes and reproductions have entered the market with the sole intent to deceive even the

marbles to flood the market. These marbles were quickly nicknamed “cat’s eye marbles” due to the way they look. As a result, these kinds of marbles have no collectible value. Today, companies in Mexico, China, Taiwan, and even Japan continue to crank out generic glass marbles that can be found for less than a dollar a bag. Meanwhile, contemporary artisans continue to make high-quality glass marbles as an art form. These typically sell for over $50 each and are made by talented artists such as Jody Fine, Josh Simpson, Eddie Seese, and other wellknown artists. These kinds of marbles are not to be played with and are coveted solely as works of art. Several auction houses have started to cater to the growing roster of marble collectors, with Morphy Auctions (located near Adamstown, Pa.) being the most prominent. Their bi-yearly toy and marble auctions continue to set new records with a lot of

One of the hottest up-andcoming collectibles to grace the antiques and collectibles market over the past decade has been marbles. Those miniature glass orbs that you probably didn’t give much thought to as a kid are now being looked at as miniature works of art. Today, some of the most popular contemporary marbles are made by talented glass artists and sold as works of art. Meanwhile, the hobby of collecting vintage and antique marbles continues to grow. Handmade glass marbles made from the last two centuries remain the most sought after while machinemade marbles manufactured before the year 1960 continue to set new records at auction. The origin of marbles dates back to ancient times when polished stones were
used before the first clay marbles were introduced. Marbles have been found in the ancient Roman city of Pompeii and even in the pyramids of Egypt. Handmade glass marbles became prominent in Germany during the 1800s. Their popularity quickly spread, and by the early 1900s, machine-made marbles were being manufactured in the United States. Mass production allowed marbles to be sold at a much lower cost, allowing anyone with just a few cents to own them. As a result, their popularity spread and the game of marbles developed into a legitimate pasttime. Akron, Ohio, became home to prominent marble manufacturers like M.F. Christensen, who perfected the ability to mass-produce colorful machine-made glass marbles. This lasted up until the late 1950s and early 1960s, when foreign manufacturers were able to produce generic marbles in bulk, thus allowing a glut of low-quality

Jim Bowie Signed Note Tops $587,000 Texana Offering At Heritage Auctions An extraordinarily rare promissory note drafted and signed by Jim Bowie sold for $62,500 to lead Heritage Auctions’ annual Texana Grand Format Auction on March 14 in Dallas, Texas. The auction realized $587,701 as nearly 400 bidders vied to own rare signed documents, letters and maps relating to the history of The Lone Star State. “We work diligently all year long to assemble this auction, and we were pleased to see collectors zero in on some really amazing finds,” said Sandra Palomino, director of historical manuscripts at Heritage. “In some cases, this auction was the only opportunity (outside of a museum) to own true treasures that directly influenced the creation of this unique state.” One of two known copies

marble collecting requires a lot of study and caution on the part of the collector. Luckily, there are multiple resources aimed at helping even the most novice beginner. For those wanting a book on identifying marbles, Robert Block has published one of the best books on the subject aptly named “Marbles Identification and Price Guide. The book can be purchased at most booksellers or through Amazon.com. If a novice collector just wants some information on identifying marbles and learning about them, two websites come to mind. The first is www.marblecollect ing.com, which is a good
Ansel Adams’ acclaimed “Portfolio Two: The National Parks and Monuments,â€? purchased directly from the artist in 1952 and accompanied by the original receipt by former assistant and lifelong friend Pirkle Jones, may sell for $40,000 when it comes up for auction Sunday, May 3, in New York. The lot, which will be offered in Heritage Auctions’ Spring Photographs Auction, includes 15 images of Adams’s iconic and breathtaking views of America’s National Park System. “This portfolio is considered Adams’ finest work, and it has been held in one family until now, which makes it all that more important,â€? said Rachel Peart, director of photography at Heritage Auctions. “The fact the owners kept the original typed receipt for $100 gives the portfolio a time capsule quality.â€? Another artwork with strong provenance to the artist is Robert Mapplethorpe’s “Roger in Fishnets,â€? 1983, which was gifted to the current owner by the model and is accompanied by a letter from the artist and the estate of the artist (est. $15,000+). This marks the first time this work has ever been offered at public auction. Two important photographs by Henri CartierBresson include â€œĂŽle de la CitĂŠ,â€? 1952, which was purchased directly from the artist in 1996 (est. $15,000+), and his instantly-recognizable “Rue Mouffetard,â€? 1954, portrays a proud French schoolboy happily carrying two bottles of wine (est. $15,000+). An impressive enlargement by Helmut Newton, “David Bowie, Monte Carlo,â€? 1983, is a contact

New Program To Promote And Support Younger Generation Formation of Antiques Young Guns U.S.A. Announced U.S. Antique Shows officially announced its strategic alliance with the Antiques Young Guns U.K. at a press conference held on March 28 at the Pier Antique Show. Originally started in the United Kingdom, the new program, Antiques Young Guns U.S.A., will promote growth, education and exposure to those in the trade 39 years old or younger. “Our industry is uniquely focused on the past and the experiences of those who came before us. We need to foster a new and younger generation of dealers to continue to showcase stunning antique pieces and to impart in-depth knowledge to the public, media and other retailers,” said Dan Darby, U.S. Antique Shows general manager. “It’s very clear we need to work together to ensure our mutual success and, perhaps, our continuation. Our own research indicates the average age of our show’s buyers is now 55. Each year it seems there is one less show on the calendar. The need for Antiques Young Guns has never been greater.” The Antiques Young Guns U.K. was founded by noted antique experts Gail McLeod of Antiques News and Fairs, George Johnson of Lady Kentmores, and TV presenter and author Mark Hill in 2011 to foster a new, younger audience’s interest in antiques. Today, the
association boasts just under 100 current members as well as established alumni. Members enjoy benefits such as a mentorship program, online exposure through the Antiques Young Guns marketplace, several buying and selling events throughout the year, and additional recognition in numerous trade and national publications. Members also have the opportunity to win Antiques Young Gun of the Year, which includes a current prize package worth nearly $10,000. Antiques Young Guns U.K. Ambassador Andrew Skipper also spoke at the morning press conference. Skipper is a lifestyle expert working as a creative consultant in America and Europe. He currently consults for The Antiques Diva and Company, Europe’s largest antiques sourcing and touring company, which operates in eight countries. “The central ethos of Antiques Young Guns is to promote younger individuals in the antiques industry who will one day become the bedrock of the trade, taking their precious knowledge forward,” said Skipper. Antiques Young Guns U.S.A.’s first official member is Geoffrey Walsky, owner of Fairfield County Antique and Design Center in Connecticut. Walsky signed up at Pier Antique Show, where he was exhibiting for the first time. “I have
owned the design center for just over a year and was looking for ways to connect with young dealers in the antiques industry. I feel Antiques Young Guns U.S.A. is the perfect opportunity for me to network with young business enthusiasts, like myself, and to obtain fresh and new ideas to grow the center,” said Walsky. The Fairfield County Antique and Design Center currently features 70 dealers in more than 20,000 square feet. To help launch the program, Antiques Young Guns U.S.A. gave away five complimentary annual memberships at the Pier Antique Show as well as provided an information table with complete Antiques Young Guns U.S.A. registration information. The program has received tremendous support from industry partners including Ruby Lane, Antiques & The Arts Weekly, the Bee, Maine Antique Digest, Modernism.com, Brass Armadillo Antique Malls, and the Art Deco Society of New York. The Antiques Young Guns U.S.A. website was launched the day of the press conference and provides further details on the new program and its initiatives. Rare Hungarian Silver Is On View In New Exhibition At Metropolitan Museum Of Art Nicolas M. Salgo (1914-2005), a Hungarian native and former United States ambassador to Budapest, was fascinated by the art of the goldsmith in Hungarian culture and formed his own treasury by collecting pieces that are individual and unique. “Hungarian Treasure: Silver from the Nicolas M. Salgo Collection” will celebrate the gift to The Metropolitan Museum of Art of the major part of the silver collection assembled by this focused collector over three decades. This large collection of silver, about 120 pieces, most dating from the 15th to the late 18th century, comprises a variety of types with especially refined appearance and high levels of craftsmanship, representing Hungarian silver at its best. The earliest works in the Salgo collection are medieval: seven objects, including two rare chalices with mastered filigree enameling. The intriguing shapes, inventive decoration, and historical importance of the objects, commissions of once-prosperous local aristocratic dynasties, make this ensemble exceptional. As a result of this generous gift, the Metropolitan Museum is now the only museum outside Hungary to possess such an array of sumptuous goldsmiths’ work from the region. The rich natural resources and a flourishing mining system in what it is today Hungary and Romania (including the major parts of Transylvania and the socalled Siebenbürgen area) attracted artisans from all over Europe who created decorative objects with what was to become a characteristic opulence. Because the

Balkans and the neighboring dominions were shaken by religious turmoil and were a major battlefield between the West and the Ottomans for centuries, few of these objects have survived. Those that have endured, many of which are included in this exhibition, offer a fascinating look into the techniques and abilities of this distinct local interpretation of Renaissance and Baroque ornamentation. The abundant deposits of silver ore in the region sparked the development of an active goldsmith community, the forerunners of which were mainly masters of German origin who were working under the strong influence of the Germanspeaking cultural area. Many of these craftsmen and

workers emigrated from Saxony, which at that time was one of Europe’s main mining centers. In addition to German styles, the shape and ornamentation of the objects typically show an Ottoman influence, since this region was regularly occupied by the Ottoman Empire. The ornate embellishment on many of the pieces is derived from contemporary prints, textiles, and other luxury goods that were sought after all over Europe. Comparative material culled from other areas of the Metropolitan Museum’s collection, including the Arms and Armor Department, the Costume Institute, and the Robert Lehman Collection, will also be on view in the exhibition to illustrate the multi-regional, wide-ranging influence on Hungarian silver during this period. “Hungarian Treasure: Silver from the Nicolas M. Salgo Collection” is organized by Wolfram Koeppe, the Marina Kellen French curator in the Metropolitan Museum’s department of European sculpture and decorative arts. The exhibition will be accompanied by an extensive web feature on the museum’s website, including an essay on the subject of Hungarian goldsmiths’ work and a history of the collection, catalogue entries, and a separate biography of Nicolas M. Salgo by Dr. Oliver A. I. Botar, professor of art history at the University of Manitoba. This online feature is made possible by the Salgo Trust for Education, New York. The exhibit runs until Sunday, Oct. 25. For more information, visit www.metmuseum.org.

James D. Julia’s Welcomes
James D. Julia Inc. recently announced that Francis Lombardi will be the department head of their Firearms Division. Lombardi will be responsible for managing the operations and growth of the department, overseeing firearms staff and specialty consultants, and handling a broad range of firearms for auction. Lombardi has a special interest in modern sporting arms but has extensive experience with guns across many historical and design categories. Complementing his passion for firearms is his extensive professional experience working with them. Before joining Julia’s, Lombardi founded a company that specialized in the import and sales of collectible and rare military and sporting firearms and accessories. As such, he understands every angle of the business, as well as the key constituents that comprise its international community of advocates. This background will be an enormous asset to Julia’s, as well as to both buyers and sellers of fine firearms at auction. Professionally, Lombardi has had a remarkable history of career successes, including leadership roles in multimillion-dollar investment advisory firms, business consultancies, and manufacturing companies. He also holds numerous U.S. patents. Now, in his role at Julia’s, he will be able to marry his business experience with his lifelong interest in rare and collectible firearms and, in turn, bring Julia’s firearms division to the next level of excellence. Lombardi’s passion for the outdoor sporting life was launched from a boyhood trip to Abercrombie & Fitch, at that time an upscale hunting,

The Buzz On “Buzzy Bee” A Short History On A Famous New Zealand Children’s Collectible Toy named Buzzy Bee is arguably New Zealand’s most famous children’s toy. Several histories exist on the birth of Buzzy Bee. A now accepted version has the toy originating in 1939, when Maurice Schlesinger of Playcraft Products made a pull-along bee in a small Auckland workshop that is very similar to the wooden toy seen today. In 2009, William McKegg from Lion Rock Ventures Limited, the company which now manufactures Buzzy Bee, heard the story of Schlesinger’s invention from a relative who was in the hospital with Betty, Maurice’s elderly widow. After his initial disbelief, McKegg discovered Mrs. Schlesinger’s Buzzy Bee’s best friend is Mary version of the story checked Lou (Image credit: Lion Rock out. Ventures Limited). His family was quoted in the 1990s as saying Buzzy Bee had been copied from a toy brought to New Zealand from the U.S. Vern Davenport, a longserving Ramsey employee, said the American Buzzy Bee he saw was flat sided, with a
wooden body, about one-anda-half inches in diameter and covered with painted paper. The toy was fitted with a metal clacker. Fisher Price used the name Buzzy Bee for a toy that fit Davenport’s description, produced between 1950 and 1956. “Buzzy Bee” (Continued from page 16)
World War II and being modified in New Zealand into what became the iconic pull along toy. The reverse story is also told of American servicemen returning home with the toy for their young children. Te Papa, New Zealand’s national museum, acquired a Buzzy Bee for its collection in 2012 that was given to baby Robin Clearwater in 1943. The record quotes Maurice Schlesinger as the designer and H. E. Ramsey Limited as the manufacturer. This example is 120-mm high, 170-mm long, and 180mm wide, built from wood,
cardboard, metal, and string. Buzzy Bee is often found in private collections of New Zealand-made toys. The price of a new Buzzy Bee is $37 to $40 in New Zealand. A 1940s example with badly worn paint had a starting bid of $70 and was passed on a New Zealand Internet site in late 2014. Played-with versions of a more recent vintage in good condition can be bought from $4 each. Those with an eye for collectable toy bargains can find quality examples among a group of mixed toys from as low as $1 for the lot.
