Diamond Dyes Were Once A Woman’s Best Friend By Saul Zalesch

ooklets that once encouraged consumers to purchase dyes for updating their wardrobes (and even their furniture and décor) are, as you might expect, a particularly colorful breed of advertising ephemera. Leading purveyors of these dyes included Diamond, Dy-O-La, Monroe Chemical, EZ-Dye, and Putnam. This article surveys the gloriously artistic and collectible publications issued by Diamond Dye, which dominated this industry through World War I. The use of dyes for these purposes was widespread before World War II. We can hardly envision these days just how relatively poor most Americans were before that war unleashed the flood of prosperity that still floats our many boats, though too many Americans are barely treading water. To put this in context, in 1901 hourly wages ranged from $0.17 to $0.28 while butter cost $0.27 a pound and eggs $0.22 a dozen. Consumer staples thus cost around five times more relative to what they do today. Moreover, most families’ entire budgets went for staples. They were not supporting cell phones, cable TV, or paying privateschool or college tuitions. Homemakers, these booklets were aimed almost exclusively at women, could rarely find even a few extra dollars to purchase new clothing or update their home decors. Dyes permitted cheap annual refurbishments. Diamond Dye, part of Wells, Richardson & Co. of Burlington, Vt., had a national presence by

the 1880s documented by almanacs and booklets. In 1885 Wells issued a series of almanacs bearing the names of different states. I have copies imprinted Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, and Vermont. Their front covers are identical except for the state name and Capitol building. The back covers are identical ads for Diamond dyes. The Diamond Dye Almanac appeared in 1888. Two booklets from that decade, “Cousin John’s Extravagant Wife” and “Class in Economy,” turn up more often on Ebay than Diamond’s later booklets. “Cousin John,” a story by Emily Hayes preaching economy, is the only Diamond booklet owned by many libraries (most Diamond booklets do not show up at all on Worldcat, the database accumulating all important libraries’ collections.) “Cousin John” has the same back cover as “Class in Economy.” (There is also an abridged, black-and-white edition of “Cousin John.”) Both devote many of their pages to

Wells’ patent medicines, addressing kidney ailments, malaria, constipation, and much else, advertising that is absent from Diamond’s 20th-century booklets. “How Claire and I Dyed” also advertised those patent medicines, but, in addition, devoted its back cover and eight inside pages to Wells’ other major product line, Lactated Foods, a milk-based product for infants and invalids. Lactated Food, with testimonials dated 1886 and covers like trade cards, devotes five pages to Diamond dyes. Diamond’s gorgeous plaid-pattern booklet of 1892 is larger and more comprehensive than its predecessors. Its 32 pages, plus covers, listed dyes for many home uses, including Easter eggs and flowers; described dyeing processes; explained color mixing; promised that consumers, both male and female, could make more money at home dyeing than they did working in mills; devoted several pages to making inks; and offered valuable information on many topics. “A Modern Cinderella,” circa 1890s, showcases both practical and artistic uses of Diamond dyes. Wells’ “American Bird Pictures In Colored Crayons” (1899) provided line drawings of 14 bird species to be filled in with designated dye colors, an early paint by numbers. Available birds included the flamingo and the California woodpecker. That same year a beautiful booklet informed women “How to Dress Well at Small Expense.” Wells even plugged its dyes on the back cover of its impressive “Virginia Album,” which is filled with testimonials for its Paine’s Celery Compound from celebrated Americans, including President McKinley. The charming “Nursery Rhymes Pictorial,” with a

fine wrap-around cover, is undated but falls stylistically in the 1890s. My favorite Diamond booklet is “The Modern Witch and Her Magic.” The title is offensive, but the cover is rich Art Nouveau. It offered consumers the American Bird Pictures book, plus a set of ten Diamond Dye Crayons in return for two 2-cent stamps, more evidence of the cheapness of that era, so it probably appeared at the turn of the 20th century. Women could create mix-and-match wardrobes. The title page states: “Cut across each page, having dress pattern, along the dotted line and get thirtytwo new dresses by combining the different waists with the different skirts.” It then offered a set of ten Diamond Dye crayons to color the dress designs in return for two 2cent stamps (meaning that in the American Bird Pictures offer, the booklet was in fact free). Diamond booklets from the first decade of the 20th century spice up any collection of books or ephemera. Both the front and back covers of the 1901 booklet declaring that Diamond dyes “have all the colors of the rainbow” are striking examples of design and the printing arts of the day. It is larger physically than the other 1900s booklets I name, measuring almost 8.5-by-6-inches versus 5-by-4inches or smaller. Besides providing information of many kinds, illustrations, testimonials, and the usual materials, it offered three free books: “Animal and Bird Pictures,” “Rug Patterns,” and “Artistic Uses of Ribbons” in return for 2-cent stamps (the animal book offer included crayons and cost two

stamps). “A Tale of Four Children Merry & Wise” (1905) contains a long poem and four full-page color pictures showing Misses Winter, Spring, Summer, and Autumn. The back cover is an exquisite Art Nouveau calendar. The only ad in this booklet is a small plug for the Diamond Dye Annual, which Wells would send to consumers free, along with “45 pieces of dyed cloth (different shades)” just for sending their name and address. The most topically collectible Diamond booklet “A Teddy-Bear Tale” appeared in 1907. It has a colorful twopage centerfold of bears, two other full-page color bear pictures, and a 1907 calendar on the back cover. “Some Little Tots and Diamond Dyes” (1908), with verses by M. G. Hays and illustrations by G. G. Wiederseim, also has four full-page color illustrations. As these books noted, Diamond’s marketing effort had by then mostly shifted to its Diamond Dye Annuals. I possess numbers 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15. I have had a standing Ebay search for this title for several years and few ever show up, so it is safe to assume that they are scarce, if not rare. Only six copies are reported on Worldcat, the earliest being 1911. I will only discuss two issues: 1909-10, the last with a monochromatic cover, and 1917-18, the latest I have seen (at number 11 its title changed to “The Diamond Dye Annual and Direction Book”). Rock Island Auction Company’s Premiere Firearms Auction, to be held Friday, Saturday, Sunday, May 2 to 4, will contain names that many in the guncollecting community consider royalty. The most renowned provenance of the auction belongs to a Henry rifle formerly in the collection of firearms icon Samuel Colt. This rifle’s former home, the Colt Patent Firearms Mfg. Co. that true collectors of the toy series only had a limited time to buy the current sets available on the market. The average shelf life of most Lego sets is only two years. Much like with most popular collectibles, adult enthusiasts, known as AFOLs (or adult fans of Lego), began to make up a healthy share of the Lego collecting market. In order to meet this demand Lego introduced several more expensive collector sets with a retail price of $199.99 to $499.99 each. Each set would be quite massive and come with thousands of pieces and multiple minifigures that in most cases would be exclusive to that particular set. Some of these sets would only be available through official Lego Stores or noted as online exclusives. This would make finding these

Ask anyone under the age of 40 what their favorite childhood toy was and you are most likely going to get some responses affirming Legos as a number one choice. Those colorful plastic building bricks were the staple of a lot of happy childhood memories. This is quite ironic as until fairly recently

instead of just playing with already produced toys based on the popular movie franchise, enthusiasts could now build their own play set, vehicle, or live action scene direct from the movie. This meant more playability and imagination contained within each toy. The main attraction of these building sets were the fact that the Lego Group was also allowed to create miniature interactive Lego figures, often called minifigures (or minifigs as they are known in the Lego universe), based on individual Star Wars characters. Many Star Wars collectors bought sets just to obtain these miniaturized characters in Lego form. As a result, sales soared. The secondary markets were set ablaze as Lego continued to create and discontinue (i.e. retire) older sets. This meant

Lego was considered an anomaly to most toy collectors. Before this time period the company made standard building sets based on generic play sets, which usually consisted of several simplistic themes. These themes were as follows: the Lego City theme (still going strong to this day), a medieval theme (usually called the Castle or Kingdom series), a pirate theme that came and went throughout the years, and a generic space theme. This all changed in 1999 when the Lego Group signed what would become one of the most lucrative licensing deals in the history of toys. It was at this time that George Lucas agreed to allow Lego to produce toys based on the popular Star Wars film franchise. The results were groundbreaking. Now,

photographs you provided, it is my opinion that the bag is African, not Native American, and probably a tobacco bag. The type of beads and the construction of this bag are not consistent with Native American pieces. I would estimate that the bag is circa 1950s or later and was probably made as a tourist piece. It was aged to appear older. As it stands, I would put an auction value on the bag of $15 to $30. If the bag was Native American and of similar vintage, you would be looking at $50 to $150; antique bags can range from the hundreds into the thousands. Even still, you have an interesting and colorful remembrance from your uncle’s estate! a lot of their most popular sets in hopes of capturing this secondary market. Meanwhile due to the fact that Hasbro holds the license to create action figures based on the full Star Wars movie franchise, the Lego Group is not allowed to sell its exclusive minifigures based on the popular Star Wars universe separately. This means that in order to get these popular collectibles one must purchase a Lego set to obtain them or deal with the rising amount of Lego sellers who buy sets just to resell the parts and minifigures contained inside. Some of the most popular and exclusive minifigures can sell for upwards of $50 each! This has created a secondary market just for the buying and selling of Lego minifigures alone. As one can probably guess speculation has run rampant within the Lego collecting field. Much like the baseball craze of the 1980s, the comic book collecting craze of the 1990s, and the Beanie Babies craze of the late twentieth century, Lego has become one of the newest commodities that is being hoarded en masse. Now along with licensed Star Wars sets Lego also makes sets based on the infamous Marvel and DC comic book characters and the popular Lord of the Rings series of films. This all begs the question as to whether or not these items will become coveted collectors’ items years later. Answering this question is

not as difficult as it seems. Lego has had the coveted Star Wars license since 1999 and during that time it has continued to churn out a healthy amount of sets and minifigures year after year. Hundreds of millions of Lego Star Wars sets have been sold, with an unknown amount being hoarded and stored away in unopened factory-sealed condition. The Star Wars license continues to remain one of Lego’s most popular properties and with the release of the upcoming movie sequels set to premier in 2015, Lego will be at the forefront of releasing even more successful sets based on these new movies. As it stands, I would not be betting on factory-sealed Lego sets to finance my retirement. Unfortunately, some will. Still, one cannot deny Lego’s rightful place in the history of toys.

more surprisingly, longer descriptions in Yiddish, Spanish, Polish, and Bohemian in number 12, 1914-15. So it seems that Diamond publications could appeal to collectors of many kinds of ephemera. Moreover, although they are quite scarce, they sell for next to nothing when they do show up on Ebay. The very day I write this, I won a second copy of 1909-10 for $3, plus $1.25 shipping. I will no longer be pursuing these prizes, and I will be giving them, as I do when I finish working on an area to the Winterthur Library in Wilmington, Del. I encourage readers to take my place scooping up these artistic and historical treasures before others begin finally to appreciate their glories.

Diamond Dyes the 1909 issue is 12 large black-and-white illustrations of women and girls engaged in activities ranging from tennis and golf to teas and musicales. The text pages contain the same kinds of information as was usual in Diamond publications. The 1917 issue, number 15, is illustrated with photographs rather than the earlier line drawings, eight large and several small. Photographs had replaced drawings in the annuals the year before. The large photos are the same in both years. The most unexpected feature in this volume is a page giving very brief descriptions of the use of dyes in Italian, Spanish, Polish, Bohemian, Russian, and Yiddish. A review of earlier editions found the same page in number 13, and,

“Made in England mark was used starting around 1909. The three digit mark refers to a dating system used by Wedgwood starting in 1860 until about 1935. In the beginning, the first letter was a month code, the second a potter’s code and the third a year code used in cycles. Starting in 1907, the first letter was changed to a “3 or “4 to help further identify the year code cycle. In reviewing the photos you provided, I believe the mark may be “4KC not “4KG. The code “4KC means this pitcher was made in 1926 (“4KG would correspond to 1930). The black “C5315 probably references the color of the decoration. My research showed that most collectors seem to favor the majolica and full color versions with values in the range of $50 to $200 at auction. Plain or colored sky versions such yours

typically fetch $20 to $40. To learn more about Wedgwood, visit the Wedgwood Museum website at www.wedgwood museum.org.uk or contact a collector’s group such as The Wedgwood Society of New York at www.wsny.org or The Wedgwood Society of Washington, D.C., at www.wedgwoodcapital.org. one hand, possibly that of W. H. Jones, working actively in the Winchester area, circa 1850. Following the sale, company president and head auctioneer Jeffrey Evans commented, “John and Lil Palmer were dear friends and their passing leaves a real void in the Virginia decorative arts collecting community. The overwhelming response to the auction and tremendous results are a testament to the Palmers’ great eye for folk art and passion for collecting. He went on to add, “John kept detailed notes about many of their pieces, including family history as well as publication and exhibition records. This provenance was instrumental in the strong prices achieved throughout the auction. “ For further information, call 540-434-3939 or visit www.jeffreysevans.com.

In a 714-lot, nine-hour marathon session, Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates sold the entire Americana collection of the late John and Lil Palmer of Purcellville, Va., to a standingroom only crowd on April 5. The Palmers were tragically killed in a single-car accident last July. The auction totaled just over $1.5 million dollars including the 15 percent buyer’s premium. The top price of the day was $74,750 paid for the first lot of the sale, a rare and important stoneware salt-glazed three gallon jar with a Federal eagle, attributed to James Miller (active 1797-1827). Made circa 1825, in Alexandria, Va., or Georgetown, Washington, D.C., the jar held a $20,000$30,000 pre-sale estimate and realized a record price for pottery from the Washington, D.C., area. The buyer was Clifton Anderson, of
