Cowan’s Soars To $1.2 Million In Record-Breaking Sale Prehistoric Art Birdstones Among The Highlights From Jan Sorgenfrei Collection Once again proving itself as one of the preeminent American Indian and Western Art auction houses in the world, Cowan’s Auctions’ April 8 sale saw a record number of bidders on its way to a $1.2 million day. The highlight of the day was the Prehistoric American Indian Art collection of renowned collector Jan W. Sorgenfrei, which sold for nearly $450,000 combined. Part one of the collection sparked enthusiastic bidding on the phones, internet, and from the salesroom, which was filled to capacity. “This is a one-of-a-kind collection, and as you can imagine, we had overwhelming interest in it from the start,” said Danica Farnand, Cowan’s director of American Indian and Western Art. “You’re always a little nervous when you’re offering a category for the first time, but we’re ecstatic with the results. We’re really looking forward to offering part two in September.” Nearly 700 collectors, dealers, and art lovers registered to bid in this sale, including over 150 bidding for the very first time with Cowan’s, both records for the Cincinnati,

An avid collector, Sorgenfrei (Ohio, 1942-2012) was the owner of Painter Creek Auction Service and Old Barn Auction, specializing in Native American artifacts. Quality is the key word when referring to artifacts chosen by Sorgenfrei to rest in his personal collection. As can easily be seen from the top lots from this sale, birdstones were special to him, especially birdstones from the “epicenter” of his native northwest Ohio. This superb collection not only represented many of the finest examples of their respective types, but also served as a testament to the creations of prehistoric art created in this archaeologically rich area. The Sorgenfrei collection comprised seven of the 10 top sale prices, with three of his most cherished birdstones fetching the highest prices of the day: an elongated slate long neck birdstone, which sold for $43,200; a fine and rare elongated slate birdstone for Continued on page 2

“Off To The Races” New Exhibition To Open At Gratz Gallery And Conservation Studio “Off to the Races” is an exhibition featuring over 40 recently discovered equestrian paintings from one of the largest private sporting art collections in the country. The paintings in “Off to the Races” depict many different equestrian scenes and events in sizes ranging from 10-by-13 inches to 40-by-50 inches. All are completed with beautiful handcrafted frames to complement each work of art. The exhibition can also be viewed on the Gratz Gallery website at www.gratzgallery.com, and a color brochure is available upon request. An opening reception will take place on Saturday, May 13, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the gallery, located at 5230 Silo Hill Road, Doylestown, Pa. This upcoming exhibition is a celebration of America’s love for horses and horse racing. The gallery is presenting this show during a time when equestrian enthusiasts are gearing up for the highly anticipated Kentucky Derby, Radnor Hunt, Winterthur Steeplechase, and the Devon Horse show. America’s love for horses and horse racing has existed since the founding of the nation and continues today. The exhibition will feature some the best early works of Peter Howell (b. 1932), Thomas

approach to equestrian painting that is fresh and exciting and can be observed in works such as “Clearing the Jump,” “Steeple Chase,” and “The Turn From Swinley.” Thomas Sherwood La Fontaine was born in Smyrna, Turkey, in 1915 and served in the military in Great Britain. He was known for his sporting art that included fox hunting, polo, and racing scenes. He has exhibited at the Royal Academy in London in the 1940s and ’50s and was well known for his commissioned paintings of notable race
horses and their owners. He lived in Malmesbury, Wiltshire, England, and divided his time between England and the United States. La Fontaine’s work is well known in equestrian circles, and his work was greatly influenced by Sir Alfred Munnings. An important example in the exhibition is “Policeman,” a French thoroughbred that won the Prix du Jockey Club at 54 to 1 odds. A l s o included in the exhibition is a quality work by William Webb, titled “Thomas Hargreaves Esq. with Holcombe Harriers,” which is a 28-by-36inch oil-on-canvas fox hunting scene done in a traditional style. Located at 5230 Silo Hill Road in Doylestown, Pa., the Gratz Gallery and Conservation Studio specializes in 19th- and 20th-century American paintings, with a focus on painters from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Gratz Gallery also offers custom framing and fine art conservation services. The gallery hours are Wednesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays, noon to 6 p.m., as well as by appointment. To learn more, call Paul Gratz at 215-348-2500.

Top Tips For Buying Your First Pinball Machine 5. Don’t just buy for investment. Pinball machines are not like most other collectibles. They are big, bulky, take up a lot of space, and are a hassle to transport. They also cost a lot of money to repair and maintain. It is never wise to own one simply for investment. Most passionate collectors will make money over the long haul because their love and dedication to the games ensure proper maintenance and use. Investors are less likely to see returns and generally sell at the wrong time or when the need arises. 4. Do not finance your first machine. I cannot stress this enough, but how you pay for your first machine is almost as important as what and where you buy it. Do not refinance your house or use a credit card to buy your first machine. Go in with cash and negotiate from a firm who specializes in refurbishing vintage machines.
3. Do not buy one for cash flow. This should go without saying, but the entertainment vending business is as good as dead in the United States. Unless you own a business with a high volume of foot traffic, buying a pinball game with the anticipation of making money from the purchase is not cost effective. The wear and tear on the machine will require heavy maintenance and repair that will outweigh any and all profit. This is one of several reasons why arcades are a dying business in the United States. 2. Patience, patience, and more patience. The time to buy a rare antique is when you see it. The time to buy a vintage pinball machine is when you learn and understand the basics. Know what you are buying and pay a realistic price. Avoid any high-pressure

properties like “The Game of Thrones” and “The Wizard of Oz.” In my opinion, it is not wise to purchase these kinds of machines. Yes, you will be getting an expensive, brandnew game with virtually no issues. However, you will also be paying a substantial premium for a game that few enthusiasts know about. Nostalgia equals monetary value in any collecting field. Why pay a premium for a game that will most likely substantially depreciate after you use it? Go for a classic game instead. 6. Go for the vintage classics. Remember back in the 1980s and even 1990s? The popular machines of that era are what you want to go after - games like Pinbot, Bride of Pinbot, High Speed, Funhouse, and Medieval Madness. If it isn’t a game that has moderate demand, proceed with caution. All the popular games from the 1980s and 1990s have experienced the best returns on investment.

The popularity of collecting vintage pinball machines shows no signs of slowing down, with prices of classic pinball games reaching mid to high four figures. Novice collectors looking to purchase their first machine should exercise a lot of patience and proceed with caution. As a result of the complex collectors market that has emerged for machines in original working condition, I have listed several top tips to help anyone looking to buy their first vintage pinball machine. Novice collectors should take this advice, as a lot of mistakes new collectors make can easily be avoided with a little bit of patience, and a whole lot of research. 10. Purchase a solid state machine only if buying your very first machine. Solid state machines were introduced in the late 1970s and are the mainstay of the pinball collecting world. They replaced a lot of the earlier mechanical components with computer chips and modernera parts. This means these kinds of machines break down a lot less than their 1960s and earlier counterparts. They also possess electronic scoreboards, flashing lights, and even synthesized voice. It is these machines that are the
most collectible. With pinball machines, earlier is not always better. 9. The price doesn’t necessarily matter. I know several people who found what was thought to be an incredible deal on a rare game at auction, only to later learn that the cost of restoration and repair would cost more than buying the same machine in near mint condition and working order. Leave the auctions to the experts. You want a near mint, already functional machine with a warranty. This will cost more, but in the long run will save a ton of money on costly repairs. 8. Research, research, and more research. The internet contains one of the best resources for any aspiring owner. Check out the Internet Pinball Machine Database at www.ipdb.org for a complete look at almost every game ever created with user reviews of each machine. After you begin your research, head over to www.pinside.com and join one of the best online forums for pinball collectors, investors, and enthusiasts. 7. Avoid buying modern machines produced in limited numbers. Thanks in part to the increased cost of manufacturing and creating modern-era games, few pinball machine manufacturers still exist and operate today. Those that do offer special enhanced, limited-edition machines based on enduring

sales tactics. You do not want to make a bad financial decision on an electronic collectible costing several thousands of dollars. 1. Have fun. Owning a pinball machine can be a great luxury. Remember why you are buying the machine, and have fun with it. If you take your time and do your research, a pinball machine can be one of the most rewarding collectibles ever!

“Invisible Man” And “Casablanca” Headline Vintage Movie Posters Auction times its pre-auction low estimate. Universal Studios did not often produce an advance or teaser one-sheet, but when it did, the results were sensational. This is an exceptional copy of what is considered by some to be among the greatest horror posters of all time. Another poster that brought a six-figure price was a “Casablanca” (Warner Brothers, R-1953) 4-Fogli, which went for $107,550. The
poster shows Ingrid Bergman in the legendary film in which she co-starred with Humphrey Bogart and Paul Henreid. Italian artist Luigi Martinati’s design shows Bergman in front of Casablanca, in French Morocco. Bergman brought elegance to the Michael Curtiz picture that helped it become almost universally accepted as one of the greatest films ever made. This example, which has a very fine grade and is mounted on linen, is considered one of the rarest and best posters ever made for the legendary film. Several other posters from the iconic film enjoyed enormously successful returns, including “Casablanca”

Expansive Native American Artifact Collection To Be Sold In Mechanicsburg, Pa.
Heritage Auction Continued from page 9
(United Artists, R-1962) Italian 4-Fogli, selling for $89,625. A “Casablanca” (Warner Brothers, 1946) poster sold for $89,625, and a “Casablanca” (United Artists, R-1962) poster sold for $50,190. Collectors clamored for images from other iconic films, as well. Numerous bidders pursued a “Wizard of Oz” (MGM, 1939) half-sheet until it realized $71,700. This poster commemorates one of the most beloved movies of all time, a musical comedy/drama that has entertained viewers of all ages for more than seven decades. Judy Garland’s turn as Dorothy remains one of the most well-known roles in movie history, and the film has remained popular, despite the fact that it was a financial disappointment. Noted for its use of Technicolor, it was nominated for six Academy Awards, losing the Best Picture award to “Gone with the Wind” but winning Best Original Song for “Over the Rainbow” and Best Original Score (by Herbert Stothart). A lobby card from “The Bride of Frankenstein”
artifacts gathered by James Young during the 1950s and earlier. The items include boxes of points, banner stones, plummets, and pottery vessels, among other things. Young (1887-1955) was a Mechanicsburg resident for most of his life. He lived and practiced law in the community, and in his free time assembled this vast grouping. At the time of his death, he bequeathed the collection to the borough of Mechanicsburg. In 1987, the collection was donated to the Mechanicsburg Museum Association. Items have This lobby card from “The Bride of been examined and verified Frankenstein” (Universal, 1935), which by archaeologist and author sold for $51,385, heralded the followup to the 1931 horror classic “Frankenstein” and offered evidence that the sequel is not always inferior to the original. (Universal, 1935) sold for $51,385. It was the heralded follow-up to the 1931 horror classic “Frankenstein.” Four years after the first installment, Universal coaxed director James Whale to return, along with actors Boris Karloff and Colin Clive, to continue the story. Elsa Lanchester was the studio’s second choice but ultimately landed the title role. Another top lot in the sale included a one-sheet from “The Day the Earth Stood Still” (20th Century Fox, 1951), which sold for $21,510. For more information, visit www.HA.com.
