Every little stitch of history that has been left to us can be a blessing for the collector, even those bits that have little more to them than a signature. Sometimes, close attention can unlock some of the story behind such a scrap. For instance, on the verso of a

SHOPS & CENTERS Collector Anecdotes And Antics Attracting The Next Generation Of Antique Collectors Starts With Respect items that retail for four figures and up, I got the feeling that this was an exclusive club and one that was not warm and welcoming to newcomers. As someone who can be described as headstrong and somewhat private, I am often seen in Nike sneakers, shorts, and my usual T-shirt containing the image of a video game or comic book character. Not the usual attire that would attract the attention of an older dealer. Needless to say my first encounter with a higher-end antique dealer was not positive. Getting the individual’s attention and the fact across that I had the money to do business with him was more of a challenge than it should have been. For lack of a much better analogy, this left me with a bad taste in my mouth and a
feeling of inferiority. This is not something a buyer of anything should ever be made to feel like. If this is the way certain individuals wish to treat other newcomers to the trade, I fully understand why the overall trade is dying in some respects. This brings me to my first point, respect your customer. A lot of antique dealers and

some high-end auction houses really need to do a much better job to attract this crowd. Recently I was involved in an interesting discussion as to how we can bring younger collectors into the antiques trade. Note that I did not say the antiques and collectibles trade. In my opinion, the overall collectibles trade is extremely healthy right now. Pop culture-based collectibles are breaking new price records almost every month, and there is no shortage of new collectors popping up on Internet-based collecting forums wanting to learn how to collect comic books, video games, or action figures. In my opinion it is the overall antiques trade that needs to change to attract a new generation of buyers. Even with the rise of reality-based collecting television shows, the
favorite comic book. Looking back I often wondered why. Some of the items I passed up would actually be worth quite a bit of money today and at the time my finances were not much of an issue as I worked part time at a local restaurant that my neighbor owned. This caused me to wonder if my experiences within the trade are typical of what current up and coming antique collectors face, and I wondered what could be done to attract more of their business. To be quite honest, part of me wants to ask high-end auction houses and dealers if they truly want to attract new and younger collectors. As I slowly learned the trade and started to attend higher-end auctions, all while at the same time working with dealers who specialize in

overall antiques market still remains at a crossroads. While one can argue that this may be due to a sluggish economy, one cannot argue this fact when popular collectibles like coins and comic books continue to break one million dollars at auction on a regular basis. Experts within the trade will argue that these high-end sales do not represent the market as a whole, and I would agree. Still, something must be said when certain collectibles keep rising in price year after year while some so called “blue chip antiques continue to languish. Looking back at my youth I fondly remember when I entered the antiques and collectibles trade as a teenager. I was always lucky to live within one hour of Adamstown, Pa., the self-proclaimed Antiques Capital of the World. Every Sunday I would take the drive to Renninger’s Antiques Market and get lost in a labyrinth of corridors devoted to the past. I never knew what treasures I would find, but I rarely bought anything aside from the average pop culturebased collectible like a vintage Star Wars toy or a

Collector Anecdotes And Antics What is your forum name? All this helps develop trust, and trust in the antiques trade can equal not only sales, but also loyalty. I am loyal to several auction houses and dealers for a reason. They treat me with the respect I deserve and grade items in a fair and conservative manner. Finally, why not offer reference guides on the items you are selling? If you are a dealer who specializes in glass why not sell a price guide devoted to glass collecting? How about selling current editions of the Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide if you happen to specialize in comic books? If you sell these items at cost it will not only generate possible sales, but you will in turn get new collectors enthusiastic about the trade. In conclusion, I think it is up to each and every dealer and auctioneer within the trade to assess what they are doing to bring younger collectors into the markets they serve. The fact that you are posting million dollar sales or getting record prices for individual items means nothing if there is not a new generation of buyers ready and willing to treasure these items just as much as the generation before. In order to accomplish this we need knowledgeable buyers who are educated and aided by knowledgeable sellers. In an upcoming article, I plan to look at how realitybased collecting shows have helped breathe new life into the antiques and collectibles trade and demonstrate why this is so important. Until that time I thank you for reading!

also much more investment minded than that of older generations. The reason third party grading has become the standard in popular collecting categories like comic books, coins, paper money, and toys is because us younger buyers were always taught that condition matters. While browsing the corridors in Renninger’s Antiques Market as a teenager, there were a lot of great items I wanted to buy. Unfortunately, the only information in these showcases was the price of the items. Very few dealers bothered to write a description for each of the items they were offering. How is a new collector supposed to know how to grade an item he has never seen or held before? Younger buyers like information. The age we grew up in was called the Information Age for a reason. If you are a dealer renting a showcase, a simple business card and an overall short summary about yourself or your business is a must. Why should I buy from you? How long have you been selling? Are you a fellow collector? Do you sell on eBay as well? These are all questions I would like to know before spending my money with you. There are a lot of dealers who over grade and misrepresent their items. How do I know you are not one of these sellers? If I have your eBay name, I can look up your feedback with my smartphone or iPad and determine right there if you are a trustworthy seller. Reputation and perception are everything. more sales and those sales can lead to an eventual consignment of a massive collection. I can assure anyone that I deal with in the trade that I do recommend top notch dealers and auction houses to other associates, collectors, and beginners. If I don’t feel as though they are going to treat that individual in a respectful manner, I wouldn’t suggest them. Why would I want to risk their first interaction within the marketplace might be negative? It’s not only unfair to the newcomer, but it’s also unfair to the dealers and auction houses that are thankful for all the business these referrals help generate. Unfortunately, it is not only some of the higher-end auction houses and related dealers who can do a much better job at attracting newbies. Antique dealers and those dealers who rent showcases to display their items can also do a much better job of describing the items they are selling. As a fellow glass enthusiast, I love to collect target balls. Unfortunately, most fellow buyers my own age are not going to know what a target ball is unless you happen to have a well written description located next to the item in your showcase. Make sure the description is well worded and legible. Provide a brief history of the piece and any background information you have available. This is a must to getting a sale in the Internet age when younger buyers are used to reading a well-constructed paragraph on any Internet auction site. Condition, condition, condition! Younger buyers are

And, of course, before Europeans settled here, the Delaware Indians were hunting, fishing, and farming on its shores and in its woods. Thanks to fertile soil and a strategic location, New Jersey, despite its small size, has played an important role in the country’s political, social, and economic history. The state was the “Crossroads of the Revolution, with more battles fought here than in any other colony. Thomas Edison’s laboratories in Menlo Park and West Orange produced important inventions that changed the way people lived and were entertained. The state’s food, pharmaceutical, and petroleum industries have provided the entire country with life-altering products. And a cross-section of memorabilia representing all of these things will

The state of New Jersey is having a milestone birthday this year, and the Haddon Heights Antiques Center is joining in the celebration. In honor of its 350th birthday, May’s special display will feature antiques and collectibles related to the Garden State. Don’t be surprised to see eastern goldfinches, violets, blueberries, or honeybees represented because these are the official state bird, flower, fruit, and insect. There will also be items that relate to New Jersey’s famous beach resorts, from postcards and pennants to Miss America Pageant programs and salt water taffy boxes. Bottles and pottery from New Jersey manufacturers and lots of ephemera, including maps and books, will also be in the display. Advertising icons like RCA’s Nipper and the Campbell Kids play an important role in New Jersey’s history, too. In 1664, New Jersey

popular former presidents as Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton. The gathering will be hosted by the local chapter of the American Political Items Collectors (APIC), a national non-profit hobbyist association dedicated to preserving political history. “Our meetings offer a great opportunity for young and old alike to see and learn about real artifacts used by candidates throughout our nation’s many elections,” said Tony Lee, a Titusville resident and
free of charge. To encourage a lifelong love of political history and collecting, each child will receive assorted buttons at no cost to start his or her own personal collection. Free appraisals will be offered for all political items brought in by members of the public. Members of the public also may bring items for auction, with a commission rate of 10 percent of the
overall sale. Breakfast and lunch, a wide selection of baked goods, and bottomless cups of hot coffee and tea will also be offered for sale (with net profits from food sales to benefit the church’s general fund). For more information, call Tony Lee at 609-730-9490 or email thefourlees@verizon.net.

Original Wolverine Artwork, Not Known To Have Survived, Surfaces For Auction At Heritage The original artwork featuring the first ever appearance of Wolverine, by artist Herb Trimpe, on the final page of The Incredible Hulk #180 (1974), arguably the most important debut of a comic book character in the last 40 years, has surfaced from the private hands where it has resided for more than three decades and will cross the block at Heritage
Auctions on Friday, May 16. “This is indisputably one of the most significant pieces of original comic art to ever surface, said Todd Hignite, vice president of Heritage Auctions. “Up until the day I actually saw it and held it in my hands, I had a hard time believing it really existed. Since the consignor isn’t a collector, and therefore unknown to everyone in the hobby, it just wasn’t even known for sure this survived. In 1983, on the afternoon that Trimpe handed over the piece of original art to the thenteenaged consignor as a souvenir of their visit that afternoon, neither had any idea that the ink, graphite and blue pencil drawing would turn out to be one of the most influential comic book images ever created. As the decades drew on and Wolverine soared in popularity and influence in pop culture, it became obvious to
the owner of the art that he had something of significant value and importance. Inspired by Trimpe’s generosity to him more than 30 years ago, the consignor has specified that the majority of the after-tax proceeds from the sale of the artwork be donated, including a large portion designated for the Hero Initiative, the first-ever federally chartered not-forprofit corporation dedicated strictly to helping comic book creators in financial need. “I’m sure the fruits of this sale will be greatly appreciated by all concerned, Trimpe told the auction house. This year, 2014, marks the 40th anniversary of the character’s first appearance in the landmark story, “And the Wind Howls Wendigo, scripted by Len Wein. In the issue, Hulk heads to Canada, looking for some peace and quiet, when he is mysteriously drawn to a cave inhabited by the sister of the man who became the Wendigo. At the very close of the thriller, the Canadian government sends in its own special agent to take care of a Hulk sighting,
