Masterworks Of Native American Art To Be Donated To The Met By Charles And Valerie Diker With This Gift, Native American Art Will Now Be Displayed In The Met’s American Wing The Metropolitan Museum of Art recently announced the promised gift from Charles and Valerie Diker of 91 works of Native American art a selection of recognized masterworks from the collection they assembled over more than four decades. Joining another 20 works already given by the Dikers during the past two decades, these examples range in date from the 2nd to the early 20th century and represent, through a wide variety of aesthetic forms and media, the achievements of artists from many culturally distinct traditions across the North American continent. “These superb works will be an extraordinary addition to The Met collection,” said Carrie Rebora Barratt, deputy director for collections and administration, in making the announcement. “They have been selected from the largest and most comprehensive collection of its kind in private hands today and are of the highest aesthetic quality. This generous gift will considerably strengthen our holdings of the artistic production of native communities, and we are immensely grateful to our longtime friends and donors Chuck and Valerie Diker for their vision and generosity.” “Valerie and I are honored to share the remarkable work of these Native American artists with the public, especially as an integral part of the broader story of

The exhibition is made possible by the Barrie A. and Deedee Wigmore Foundation, the Henry Luce Foundation, the William Randolph Hearst Foundation, and the Jane and Robert Carroll Fund. Born in Lewiston, Me., in 1877, Hartley became known for his peripatetic nature, especially his time spent in Paris and Berlin, where he participated in the European avant-garde. Over the course of his career, however, he returned to his home state repeatedly, painted Maine subjects while living abroad, and proclaimed himself the “painter from Maine” in the final chapter of his life. With the artist’s place of origin as its focus, the exhibition will trace the powerful threads of continuity that run through Hartley’s work and underlie Continued on page 4

The other day, I was having a chat with my friend, Ted Wiederseim, who is an auctioneer in Chester Springs, Pa. We were talking about the world of brown furniture. For the newbie, brown furniture refers to antique hardwood furniture as opposed to painted or metal furniture. It has been the mainstay of the antiques trade for decades. It is the brass dial tall case clock and the Hepplewhite bureau and the Chippendale secretary. Ted and I were discussing

brown furniture. I am a firm believer in taking advantage of opportunity. And now is definitely the time to consider making some investments in high quality furniture. Consider going to an auction or working with a dealer to make some smart purchases. If I had the money, I would purchase one or two low chests of drawers. Why? Because the low chests have a higher retail value and fit better into many different homes than the big examples. They can work in a bedroom or a dining room or even in a hall. My next choice would be a desk. In this case, I would look for a well-scaled example, perhaps in something more interesting than walnut. Cherry or applewood would be my choice. I personally like

many of his greatest contributions to American modernism. To Hartley, Maine was a springboard to imagination and creative inspiration, a locus of memory and longing, a refuge, and a place for communion with previous artists who painted there, especially Winslow Homer, the most famous American artist associated with the state. Hartley died in Ellsworth, Me., in 1943. Hartley began his career by painting and exhibiting views of the state’s western hills in a vibrant painterly style, seen in works such as “The Silence of High Noon—Midsummerâ€? (1907–08), which he debuted in 1909 at his first solo exhibition at Alfred Stieglitz’s art gallery, 291. Hartley worshipped Paul CĂŠzanne above all other modern painters; in emulation of CĂŠzanne’s legendary serial views of Mont Sainte-Victoire in his home of Aix-enProvence, Hartley adopted Maine’s Mount Katahdin as one of his key subjects beginning in 1939. One entire gallery of the exhibition will be devoted to Hartley’s bold, audacious figure paintings, such as “Madawaska—Acadian LightHeavyâ€? (1940) and “Canuck Yankee Lumberjack at Old Orchard Beach, Maineâ€? (1940–41). The unrefined sensuality of the figures evokes Walt Whitman’s poetry, which the painter also admired. His depictions of working-class men are typically static, even saint-like in appearance. The

Fake U.S. Error Pennies

Among the things to look for in a counterfeit is flat, squashed-looking lettering, thickness of some letters, spacing between “In God We Trust” and/or “Liberty” and the rim, weak lettering and less detail on Lincoln’s image. In 1943, during World War II, copper was needed for the war effort, so for a short time, pennies were made from steel instead of copper. However, a small number of 1943 copper pennies were minted, mostly in Philadelphia, and today only a handful are known to remain. These rarities are worth tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars. One exception was a one-of-a-kind 1943D penny mistakenly minted from a bronze planchet that sold in 2010 for $1.7 million. Of

Error coins are a numismatist’s dream. In fact, some coin enthusiasts will get boxes or rolls of coins from banks or buy large unsorted coin collections just to carefully pick through them looking for errors. And that can be a worthwhile hobby - some error coins can sell for tens of thousands of dollars, and even if yours isn’t super rare, it’s still probably worth a lot more than face value. The only true error coins are those that come out of the U.S. Mint with flaws. Some errors that can be found on coins are double struck (causing numbers, lettering, etc. to appear doubled), missing rim, offcenter images, partial blank planchets (plain metal disks), clipped planchets, and more. Because of their value, fraudsters try to create an appearance of an error on a coin that was minted without errors. Let’s take a look at some pennies that are known to have been faked - or counterfeited.

One of the most popular double struck (sometimes called “double die”) pennies is a 1955 wheat penny minted in Philadelphia. About 40,000 of these pennies were created during one shift at the mint, when a misaligned die created the double strike on the front of the coin, most noticeable on the numbers and lettering. With values ranging into the thousands for a single one of these pennies, it’s highly desirable and, therefore, highly counterfeited.

Exhibition Celebrates Bill Paxton Family’s Legacy And Lifelong Passion For Collecting Fine Art

Here is the exhibit, “The John and Mary Lou Paxton Collection: A Gift for the Nevada Museum of Art,” an installation view, 2017. Courtesy of the Nevada Museum of Art. spanning a variety of international as well as regional artists. Works by American artists Nathan Oliviera, David Ligare, and Wolf Kahn contrast with the Bauhaus-inspired works of Herbert Bayer and the minimal abstractions of American painter Frederick Hammersley. These abstract works balance against the Paxtons’ interest in art of the American Southwest, including Fritz Scholder, Jaune Quick-toSee-Smith, and Randy White. “The works are more than paintings to me; they are my memories of growing up in my parents’ home,” said Bill Paxton in September 2016. Growing up in Missouri in the 1940s, John Paxton became fascinated with art when famous American Regionalist painter Thomas Hart Benton moved in next door. The Paxtons and Bentons became fast friends; John even posed for Benton in the painting “Shipping Out” (1942), now in the collection of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art. In the 1950s, John and Mary Lou moved to Fort Worth, Texas, where John joined the board of the Fort Worth Art Museum and the couple began

to build their intensely personal collection of contemporary art. After moving to the San Diego area in 1980, the Paxtons continued to visit galleries, often meeting and becoming friends with the artists whose works they collected. The lifelong pursuit resulted in a significant collection ranging from representational paintings to abstract pieces. The relationship between the Paxtons and the Nevada Museum of Art began in 2003 and grew from a shared affinity for and interest in the West. Visiting Reno several times over the years, the Paxtons became impressed by the museum’s growing collections, Reno community, and Will Bruder-designed facility that pays homage to the northern Nevada landscape. Over the past decade, the Nevada Museum of Art was fortunate to develop a close friendship with the Paxton family. “While the museum mourns the loss of this lovely couple and their son, we celebrate John and Mary Lou’s thoughtful and generous gift to the Nevada Museum of Art and our community,” said David B. Walker, Nevada Museum of Art executive director and CEO.

Nevada Museum of Art personnel were deeply saddened by the sudden loss of actor Bill Paxton. First introduced to the Nevada Museum of Art, Donald W. Reynolds Center for the Visual Arts, E. L. Wiegand Gallery in 2003, Paxton and his parents, John and Mary Lou Paxton, became steadfast friends with the cultural institution’s curators and executive staff. In 2006, John and Mary Lou promised a bequest of their art collection to the museum. To honor the couple’s generosity, that same year the museum mounted an exhibition and produced a catalogue titled “Selections from the John and Mary Lou Paxton Collection.” John Paxton passed away in 2011, and Mary Lou in 2016. The official announcement of the realized bequest was to be made later this year at the museum during a special celebration with Bill Paxton, following a spring exhibition of his parents’ collection. “The John and Mary Lou Paxton Collection: A Gift for the Nevada Museum of Art” opened on Feb. 26, one day after Bill’s untimely passing, and will remain on view through Sunday, June 4, at the Nevada Museum of Art, Donald W. Reynolds Center for the Visual Arts, E. L. Wiegand Gallery, located at 160 W. Liberty St. in downtown Reno, Nev. This exhibition is presented in memoriam of Bill Paxton (1955-2017). The John and Mary Lou Paxton collection showcases a lifelong collecting passion,

Bill Supported By California Auctioneers Clears State Senate Law Pertains To Autographed Sports And Entertainment Memorabilia

The California State Capitol Building. Photo by Rafal Konieczny. would declare that it is to take effect immediately as an urgency statute. One of the companies in the coalition that has been actively advocating for passage of SB 579 is LiveAuctioneers, whose online bidding platform is used by 489 California auction houses. LiveAuctioneers CEO Jason Finger commented, “In any transaction involving a signed collectible item, auctioneers take very seriously the need to provide trustworthy provenance. To maintain a thriving marketplace for autographed sports and entertainment memorabilia, it is also extremely important for both buyers and sellers to know their privacy will be respected. We’re delighted that SB 579 has passed unanimously in the California Senate’s Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee and will continue to lend our support to the auction-house alliance promoting the bill’s passage.” The measure now goes to the California Senate Judiciary Committee.

current law severely impacts entities that are not, or are only minimally, engaged in the sale of sports and entertainment memorabilia and that were and are not the intended focus of the statute, thereby unintentionally hindering commercial activity in the state of California. SB 579 corrects this recently enacted statute by the following: • Revising the definitions of “Collectibles” so as to more clearly target “Sports and Entertainment” Memorabilia. • Revising the definition of “Dealer” to exclude an auction company or auctioneer already governed by existing law, the Auctioneer and Auction Companies Act. • Clarifying certain provisions in recognition of federal precedent on the unconstitutionality of state statutes regulating out-ofstate sales (see Sam Francis Found. v. Christie’s Inc., 784 F.3d 1230 (9th Cir. 2015)). • Striking the requirement that dealers of autographed memorabilia disclose consignors’ identities, in favor of a requirement that dealers maintain records of such data for seven years and make such a disclosure if mandated by subpoena or court order. SB 579 preserves provisions in existing law, including the protections afforded consumers in the penal, commercial and civil codes. This bill

On April 3, the California Senate Business, Professions and Economic Development Committee approved SB 579, a measure that corrects the problems created by the provisions in AB 1570 (Chang) [Ch. 258, Stat. 2016], Signed Memorabilia, while preserving consumer protection. The vote was unanimous: 9 aye, 0 no. SB 579 is authored by Senator Cathleen Galgiani and co-authored by a bipartisan group of five members of the California State Senate. Last year, the California State Legislature approved and Gov. Jerry Brown signed into law AB 1570 (Chang) enacting new provisions in Section 1739.7 of the California Civil Code, effective Jan. 1, 2017. The amendments were intended to rigorously govern the sale of “autographed” sports and entertainment memorabilia by requiring dealers who advertise and sell any item bearing a signature to provide a certificate of authenticity to the purchaser. The new regulation also requires various onerous practices and procedures relating to record maintenance and disclosures of the identity of consignors of such “autographed” items, the latter of which raises privacy and confidentiality concerns. Violation of the statute includes severe civil penalties (up to 10 times actual damages, or more, plus legal fees and costs to a successful claimant). The language of the

Doing Some Good With Your Stuff Plan For Your Stuff By Andrew Richmond Let’s continue our break from the planning process to talk about donations. Donating money or things is a great thing - it’s generous and can be a gratifying way to help a cause that means something to you. I regularly encounter folks who are considering donating antiques or art to their favorite museums. This always makes me smile. Museums depend on such gifts to fill needed holes in their collections and thus tell the story they want to tell. Of course, when some of these folks offer to make their donations, they are told by the museum that their gift is not wanted. I then sometimes hear the complaining that they were trying to do something nice for such-and-such museum and their generous donation was rejected. When I inquire further, I’m told that they wanted to donate their Aunt Tilly’s wedding dress and their great-grandmother’s spinning wheel to the historical society in a town where neither person actually lived.

Here’s the reality: a significant percentage of art and antique donations offered to museums are turned down (gracefully and with deep gratitude, I should say). Why? Because museum collections, even if entirely comprised of donated objects, are expensive. Art and historic objects must be stored, preserved, and insured, and that costs money. Giving an object to a museum is kind of like giving someone a cell phone for Christmas. “Great! The new iPhone! Thanks for the $100 monthly bill! Okay, perhaps that’s unfair. But yes, indeed, giving a museum an object necessarily obligates them to take on the stewardship of that object, and that will, in fact, cost them money. As a result, most museums are (or should be) using discretion when considering acquisitions, even if donated. They have collection policies that must be followed, perhaps a collection committee that will consider the donation. Questions like “How does this object help us further our mission? and “Do we already have similar objects in our collection? are asked and answered. (The answer to the

latter question with regard to wedding dresses and spinning wheels is a resounding “yes from every museum everywhere.) If an offered donation doesn’t meet the needs of the museum, then it’s not worth them spending the money by taking on its stewardship. In the 21st century, no museum can collect simply for the sake of collecting. Usually, as soon as I commend a client on wanting to donate something I immediately implore them to take no offence if the museum says no. They are grateful you thought of them, but for valid reasons, your donation is not appropriate. So how does one successfully make a donation? Just call the museum and ask to talk to whoever is in charge of accepting donations and simply ask. Is this something you could use and might want? If there is potential interest, they’ll let you know how the process proceeds. If there is no interest, I guarantee they’ll say “thanks and may even have a suggestion for another museum that might have an interest. By the way, this trend is happening not just in museums. Your local library will not want your late mother’s collection of romance novels for

their shelves. And your local thrift shop may even be getting picky about what it takes (because throwing away unsaleable donations costs money, too). Fortunately, there is a way you can still benefit your favorite museum (or other organization) even if they cannot accept the item(s) you want to donate. You can sell them and give them the

money. Some museums, in fact, will take donated objects and, instead of adding them to their collection, will send them off to sale and use the proceeds to benefit their collection. Before anyone gets their hackles up, you can rest assured that no ethical museum will do this without your express consent (typically, in these situations, they

have declined your donation but have offered to facilitate the sale in exchange for the donation of the proceeds). You still get to donate to your favorite museum, and they get a donation they can really use‌win-win! And you can usually get another “winâ€? because you may qualify for a tax deduction for your donation. We’ll talk about that more in a future column.
