Material Culture Holds Cataloged Sale For The Kristina Barbara Johnson Estate By Karl Pass

hiladelphia’s Material Culture held an 851lot cataloged sale on May 4 for the Kristina Barbara Johnson estate. The hammer total was $419,900 (not including buyer’s premium). Material Culture charges a 25 percent buyer’s premium. It is the same for bidders through the live auctioneers online platform. Presale estimates were $260,000 to $445,000. Of the 851 lots, 30 did not sell. An eclectic sale of decorative and antique items, the first 100

Many of the highlights of this sale were Outsider Art paintings. A Clementine Hunter (1886-1988) paint-on-board titled “Christmas Tree” sold for $4,375. A Sister Gertrude Morgan mixed media-onpaper titled “Wake Up Read Run” sold for $2,875, and Justin McCarthy’s “Hatted Beauty” painting done in 1962 and used to illustrate the cover of the sale catalog sold for $3,750. Also sold was her lithographic poster collection by the Frenchman Raymond Savignac (1907-2002), illustration art by American George Carlson (1887-1962), a vast offering of Japanese woodblock prints by Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858),

close to 100 mounted hooked rugs, her French Jaspe pottery collection, about 150 fish decoys, jewelry, fashion accessories, furniture, canes, Arts and Crafts lamps, silver tea sets and flatware services, coins, and her antique reference book and catalog library, among other things. Northeast Auctions of Portsmouth, N.H., has sold some of her material, as has Swann Galleries in NYC. Pook & Pook, Inc. of Downingtown, Pa., sold a large amount of items from her estate as well, including most of the hooked rug collection. On January 24, Christie’s in NYC offered 77 lots of various selected highlights from multiple categories. A few things that failed to sell at the other sales, noteably several lots from Christie’s, were sold at Material Culture. (Continued on page 2)

So think about starting a series! There are many others out there that I have not mentioned (Fraktur, cookbooks from churches, etc.) that are worthy of looking at. So start collecting a series!

In my last column, I wrote about two collecting areas that are still very affordable, tin ware and Hardy Boys books. This week, I want to expand upon the whole book theme to look at a couple of related topics. Publishing books in a series has been going on for generations. We love to follow a series of stories or topics that are bound together around a common theme. Collecting a series of books is also fun because it can give you a targeted area to pursue with an ultimate goal: to complete the series. So what are my favorite ones to suggest to budding collectors? “Rivers of America.â€? Beginning in 1937 and ending in 1974, this series was written by great authors (not historians) about the great rivers of America. In many cases, the books were also illustrated by famous artists of the period. The “Rivers of Americaâ€? series is great fun to collect as there are almost infinite variations that you can pursue in the series, and it is still possible to find early autographed copies by many of the authors. My favorite‌Frank Waters authored and Nicholai Fechin illustrated “The Colorado River.â€? “American Guide Series.â€? Under FDR, the federal government hired writers to produce a series of 48 state guides (plus ones for the Alaska Territory, Puerto Rico and Washington D.C.). These were filled with historical and cultural information about each state and things to see and do there. The project

Of interest to folks in the Mid-Atlantic are the annual publications of the Pennsylvania German Society (PGS) and the former Pennsylvania German Folklore Society. These books, especially the early volumes, are often ignored in today’s fast-paced computeroriented world but they consist of exceptional research and scholarship (in many cases life work) by scholars. Today, the PGS continues to publish annual volumes, and a complete set would be the envy of nearly any collector. Speaking of series‌there are lots of other series to collect that are not just books. One of the most interesting is the postcard series of the fire departments of Harrisburg, Pa. They are all numbered, and I understand it is possible to put together a set pretty

Much of the furniture in the sale, some period, sold for soft prices. Most of the jewelry, Art Deco, Victorian, and Mid-century, did fine. The hooked rugs were sold towards the end of the sale in the evening. The sale lasted about 10 hours. There were 24 lots of fish decoys also near the end. Most were grouped with six or seven per lot. Johnson’s reference book and catalog library sold last. A group of 20 decoy books sold for $313; a group of 40 folk art books sold for $406; and a group of 70 issues of the “Clarion,” which used to be the publication of the American Folk Art Museum, sold for $563. A legendary 1927-D double eagle, the rarest coin ever minted in Denver, Colo., and the absolute key among circulation issue Saint-Gaudens double eagle, realized $1,292,500 to lead the way in Heritage’s March 20 auction of The Bently Collection in San Francisco, Calif. The auction raised $8.9 million overall. “Proceeds from this auction are going directly to the Bently Foundation,� said Greg Rohan, president of Heritage. “Christopher Bently established this foundation to honor his father’s philanthropic spirit and as a means to support the arts, environmental sustainability and animal welfare in communities in northern California and Nevada. “The 1927-D double eagle is both the rarest regular issue 20th-century coin and the rarest coin minted at the Denver Mint. Only seven times has an example crossed Heritage’s auction block, and only seven examples are known to be available to collectors. Given the rarity of the coin and the popularity of the

Saint-Gaudens double eagle series, we expected high demand for this coin, and it did not disappoint.� The buyer, Barry Stuppler, president of Stuppler & Company in Woodland Hills, Calif., placed the winning bid on The 1927-D SaintGaudens double eagle realized $1,292,500.

The fabled Carson City Mint has produced more than its share of rarities, such as the 1870-CC double eagle, considered the fifth rarest issue in the Liberty double eagle series behind the ultra-low mintage 1882 and 1886 circulation issues, the 1856-O, and the nearly uncollectible 1861 Paquet reverse coin struck in Philadelphia. No 1870-CC double

eagles have ever been certified in mint state grades by any major grading service, making high quality AU examples that much more desirable, with the Carson City mintmark only adding to the coin’s allure. The Bently specimen is graded AU53 by PCGS and is likely one of the five finest specimens known. It sold for $411,250. Chief among the territorial issues represented in this auction was an octagonal $50 piece with lettered edge struck by U.S. Assayer Augustus Humbert in 1851. Seldom seen in mint state, the finest example from the Bently Collection was graded MS60 by PCGS and sold for $282,000. Rarities from the San Francisco Mint were also well-represented in this auction, including a 1930-S double eagle MS65 PCGS, which sold for $176,381; an 1854-S quarter eagle Good 6 PCGS selling for $193,875; an 1878S half dollar MS63 PCGS sold at $129,250; and an 1864-S eagle AU53 NGC, which brought $146,875. The National Association of Milk Bottle Collectors (NAMBC) will hold its 34th Annual Convention at The Holiday Inn in Grantville (Hershey), Pa., at the junctions of Interstates 80 and 81 from Thursday to Saturday, May 29 to May 31. Throughout the convention, members will seek and trade milk bottles, caps and dairy related memorabilia. On Thursday at 1:30 p.m., Ken Clee will give a seminar on creamers, and on Friday at 1:30 p.m., John Tutton will speak on fakes and reproductions. An important part of the convention is the large educational displays created by members to highlight their prized milk bottles or other dairy memorabilia. A banquet is held on Friday night. The convention will conclude with a members and registered guests only auction of milk bottles, caps and a wide range of

She enjoyed Impressionist art and conversations with people from all walks of life. She loved traveling to foreign countries and entertaining people in her home. Rona liked to play mah jong, bridge, and canasta. When she got dressed, everything had to be an exact match. She had an adventurous spirit and inquisitive mind. Crossword puzzles were her nemesis. Rona collected original oil and watercolor paintings, Royal Bonn porcelains, art glass, all kinds of jewelry, classic movies, cookbooks, and more. But most of all, she collected people. Rona Lee Kohler, loving wife, mother, grandmother and co-founder with her husband, Jesse, of JMK Shows, died on April 1 at Citrus Memorial Hospital in Inverness, Fla. Her devoted husband was at her bedside when she passed away. Rona was born on Oct. 12, 1937, in Brooklyn, N.Y., the only daughter among four children of Michael and Pearl Gertz. She attended Tilden High School, graduating in 3 years with honors. She attended CCNY as a business major, but left before graduating to accept a multi-faceted job as a bookkeeper, radio announcer, disc jockey and goodwill ambassador at The Virgin Isle Hotel in the Bahamas. She interviewed dignitaries and celebrities visiting the islands and was the first to record the islands’ steel bands. She later returned home to Brooklyn to live with her parents and brothers. She became a sought-after model for the famous Powers Modeling Agency in New York City. After that, she worked for a medical supply company where her incredible memory, vibrant personality, and mathematical skills made her an invaluable asset to the firm. She was promoted to sales manager and traveled extensively throughout North and

South America. In 1960, Rona returned to the Baruch School of CCNY in the evenings. At the same time, a young artist named Jesse Kohler was studying nearby at The School of Visual Arts. They were destined to meet at a restaurant midway between the two schools and to fall in love. They were married on January 22, 1961. By 1965 Rona had given birth to three children, had become a full-time mother and housewife, and had been instrumental in helping Jesse open an award-winning advertising agency. In 1969, the Kohler family moved to Rockaway, N.J., where Rona’s radiant personality and social skills made the Kohler homestead a favorite destination for everyone, from the children’s friends, to the neighbors, to the local politicians. She was the perfect hostess, and she loved to entertain. She also loved to expand her horizons by listening and learning. She became an excellent cook, able to offer gourmet dishes in several different

Motivated New Bidders Discover Antique Toys At Bertoia Auctions’ $1.2M Season Opener Whether high-end European productions of a century ago or mid-range boomer toys produced for the prosperous postwar American market, toys made an impressive statement at Bertoia Auctions’ first sale of the year, held March 28 and 29. The auction attracted a bidding audience divided equally among floor, phone and Internet participants and

grossed nearly $1.2 million. All prices quoted are inclusive of an 18 percent buyer’s premium. “There were many new players whose names I did not recognize,” said Bertoia Auctions associate Rich Bertoia. “That’s always an encouraging sign, because it means there are collectors starting fresh with many slots to fill in their collections. Other European standouts ranged from a clockwork biplane based on a Wright Brothers design, $1,652; a clockwork boat, possibly of French manufacture, with two bisque-head, cloth-dressed rowers, $3,835; and a Doll et Cie. Ferris wheel, $4,720. A circa1910 hand-crank-operated automaton of a gentleman in tails with performing dogs on a musical Ferris wheel fetched $4,720. A fleet of nicely scaled, well-detailed Marx vehicles followed. A scarce red and white circa-1930s pressed-steel ambulance doubled its estimate at $944, while a Marx lithographed-tin Mack steam shovel with original box powered its way to $2,950 against an estimate of $250-$300. Many of the Marx toys came from the collection of the late Dr. Malcolm Kates, who was known for his excellent eye for color and design. The parade of European toys resumed with a strong performance from the Lehmann corner. A boxed Tut-Tut sped to $2,950, a Zig Zag commanded $2,006, and a Man-Da-Rin made $1,770. A fine selection of French Martin characters included a Barrel Roller, $1,121, and an Advocate, which successfully made its case at $2,950 against an estimate of $800-$1,000. The Martin that “cleaned house,” however, was the perennially popular Washer Woman, which more than quadrupled its high estimate to settle at $6,490. Of all the categories featured in Bertoia’s Spring Opener, none realized more money per centimeter than the choice grouping of tiny penny toys. On average, they sold for $300-$700, but several earned remarkable four-figure sums,

including a three-inch articulated Gnome on Egg, which rose to $4,720 (est. $500-$600); and a three-inch Meier doubledecker bus, $2,242 (est. $400$600). A boxed Parker Bros. Toy Town Airship Meet with a lithographed hangar and a Bleriot penny toy dirigible and two airplanes was bid to $1,880. Cast-iron collectors stepped up to the plate to bid aggressively on a Hubley reindeerdrawn sleigh, $5,310, and a Kenton oversize Caisson, possibly a prototype, $9,440. Ideal’s Bicycle Riders, consisting of three riders joined together on bikes, wheeled their way to $3,540. Rare and beautiful Erzgebirge carved-wood toys rarely appear at auction, but several wonderfully detailed examples were offered at Bertoia’s sale, including a boxed set of Townspeople, $3,540, and a Logging Encampment, $2,006. Another German highlight was a 24inch Steiff golden mohair bear with leather muzzle, which handily surpassed its $4,000$6,000 estimate to reach $10,030. The magical Tom Fox collection and other select consignments drew antique Christmas ornament collectors from far and wide.
