“The Bridge” By Ernest Fiene Becomes Newest Addition At Spring Purchase Party FRIDAY MAY 27, 2016 • VOL. 47, NO. 22
Harry Bertoia’s Studio Jewelry And Sound Sculpture Is Explored In Two Exhibitions The Museum of Arts and Design (MAD) is presenting two exhibitions until Sunday, Sept. 25, that will focus on prolific artist, designer, and sculptor Harry Bertoia (1915-78) and highlight the distinct practices that bookended his career. “Atmosphere for Enjoyment: Harry Bertoia’s Environment for Sound” explores the sounding sculptures collectively referred to as Sonambient, their installation in Bertoia’s stone barn, and their legacy as sound art; while “Bent, Cast & Forged: The Jewelry of Harry Bertoia” introduces the lesserknown jewelry works that, in many ways, are the predecessors of his internationally acclaimed sculpture and furniture designs. “Harry Bertoia is a perfect subject for the Museum of Arts and Design,” said Shannon R. Stratton, MAD’s William and Mildred Lasdon Chief Curator. “His prolific practice has pushed the boundaries of art, design, and craft.” “Whether it was kinetics in jewelry, the monotype as drawing, or the creation of a sound environment as an artwork, Bertoia worked across disciplines and scales fluidly and with inventiveness,” Stratton said. “The impact of his work is tremendous, and transcends specific art and design fields to influence architects and sculptors as readily as sound designers and musicians.”

Reading Public Museum members selected the newest work of art to add to the museum’s evergrowing permanent collection at its Spring Purchase Party. “This year our goal was to add a new piece of American Modernism,” shared museum curator Scott Schweigert. “And I am pleased to announce that ‘The Bridge’ by Ernest Fiene was the winner.” Ernest Fiene was a Germanborn American artist (1894-1965) who painted “The Bridge” circa 1960. It is an oil-on-canvas and was purchased from the Caldwell Gallery in Manlius, N.Y. This is the fourth year that the Reading Public Museum (RPM) has hosted a Purchase Party as a way to involve its membership in selecting works of art to fill gaps in its collection. During an evening event, Curator Schweigert, collections committee members and
curatorial staff presented five selections of oil paintings and museum members voted for their favorite with Mengel Dollars. The other works on display were “A Cool Drink” by Robert Gwathmey, “The Fortune (Solitaire)” by Kenneth Hayes Miller, “The White Pitcher” by Henry Lee McFee and “Sailboats” by Bror Julius Olsson Nordfeldt. This latest addition is currently on display in the museum’s Cohen Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art. The Reading Public Museum is supported in part by grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and is located at 500 Museum Road, Reading, Pa. The museum is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. To learn more or to become a member, visit www.reading publicmuseum.org.

A Model 1886 Winchester rifle presented to Captain Henry W. Lawton is now the most expensive single firearm ever sold at auction after drawing $1.265 million at Rock Island Auction Company’s premiere auction. The sale took place April 29, 30, and May 1. Other guns have sold higher as a pair, but no other single firearm has sold for more through auction. The three-day sale grossed $17.5 million. “It is an honor to be entrusted with an American treasure,” said RIAC President Kevin Hogan. “Being serial number one and possessing such outstanding condition would alone be enough to
draw six figures at auction. When you add one of the most famous names in the history of the Old West you have a huge crossover appeal and set the stage for something special to happen.” “For decades firearms have provided an alternative form of investment and this is clear proof of that,” says RIAC CEO Patrick Hogan. With firearms sales spiking in the previous two presidential election years and the new world record price, the future appears extremely rosy for the gun collecting market. The rifle’s story begins with two

or human touch. Beginning in 1968, Bertoia remodeled an old stone barn, which stands on his 90-acre property in Pennsylvania, to house the works and act as a recording studio for their sounds. There he created 360 known tapes, eventually producing 11 LPs with titles such as “Phosphorescence” and “Ocean Mysteries.” Taking its title from an unrealized concept drawing in which Bertoia imagined a complete environment for his sculptures and furniture, MAD’s “Atmosphere for Enjoyment” exhibition consists of original sounding sculptures by Bertoia; an immersive four-channel sound installation created by John Brien from Bertoia’s original Sonambient recordings; interactive sounding sculptures made by Bertoia’s son, Val Bertoia; a selection of monotypes that capture the artist’s atmospheric vision for the Sonambient forms; and an array of ephemera, recordings, and hands-on materials, including a timeline documenting the sounding sculptures’ production, exhibition, performance, and influence. To complement the exhibition, MAD commissioned two new recordings and performances by contemporary sound artists Lizzi Bougatsos and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe at Bertoia’s Sonambient barn, the environment he created for the installation and recording of the sounding sculptures on his property in Pennsylvania. These recordings are available in the exhibition and online, and a series

For the last Friday of each month throughout the run of the exhibition, MAD invites musicians to participate in studio sessions and create recordings with the installation of sounding sculptures by Val Bertoia in the gallery.
Bent, Cast & Forged: The Jewelry of Harry Bertoia Presented in conjunction in MAD’s Tiffany & Co. Jewelry Gallery is “Bent, Cast & Forged: The Jewelry of Harry Bertoia,” which displays Bertoia’s jewelry and explores his investigations of form and material during his early days as an artist and designer at the Cranbrook Academy of Art. Though Bertoia is best known for his metalwork, particularly his latticed wire “Diamond” chairs for the Knoll furniture company, his Sonambient and Gong sounding sculptures, and his large-scale brass and copper screens for corporate interiors, his initial experimentations with metal began with
small pieces of jewelry. For Bertoia, jewelry making was a process of creative discovery, an exploration of material on a manageable scale, and an avenue of inquiry for his conceptual interests. Inspired by the artistic theories emanating from Europe’s avant-garde, he was particularly fascinated by the vital forces of nature and its cycle of growth and decay. These investigations of form, dimension, and structure were Here Bertoia is using an implement he produced largely during the made to play a bronze gong in 1975, first decade of Bertoia’s career Bertioa Barn, Barto, Pa. The brooches, bracelets, and necklaces showcased in this exhibition are standing evidence of the artist-craftsman’s first forays into biomorphic abstraction, and establish him as both a pioneer of the American studio jewelry movement and a master of elevating fashionable adornment to objets d’art. Several early monotype prints further illustrate how Bertoia harnessed the same intuitive, experimental approach to creating his works. Entertainment System was released in North America in 1985 and went on to sell well over 30 million units in the United States alone. Due to the popularity of the system it should be expected that individual game cartridges were manufactured in the tens of millions. Even unpopular games and notable failures had production runs in the millions as a result of its high installed user base. Speculators have to use caution when choosing to invest in items that they consider to be old or vintage. I am not even 40 years old and I do not consider anything manufactured in the 1980s to be all that old and neither should you. Warehouse finds are quite common even today. Smart collectors and wouldbe speculators need to understand this. Ironically, this was supposed to be the end of this article, but recent events prompt me to write a followup. The owner of the factory sealed case of Stadium Events has indicated that he has factory sealed cases of many more Nintendo games spanning some of the rarest titles. He has also hinted that he owns more than one full case of factory sealed Stadium Events! While the effect of these developments and what impact they have on the prices of some of these items is still undetermined, collectors need to understand that this is just the tip of the iceberg and very few items can truly be considered rare. In an upcoming article I will look at the impact the word rare has had on the collectibles trade and why it has become more of a marketing term than something of meaning. Thanks for reading.

Stadium Events - the mere mention of this obscure video game produced for the original Nintendo Entertainment System (known as the NES) is enough to make any video game collector or hardcore Nintendo enthusiast start salivating. The game was released in North American markets in extremely limited quantities by Bandai Games in 1987. By the time the game would enter into mass production, Nintendo would intervene announcing that it would be producing its own version of the game to coincide with the release of its gimmicky and soon to be defunct Power Pad video game controller. Nintendo’s version of the game would go into mass production under the name World Class Track Meet. Today, World Class Track Meet is worth $2 in near mint condition while a near mint copy of Stadium Events without its corresponding box or manual is worth close to $10,000 or more! A factory sealed copy of Stadium Events was auctioned off on eBay a few years ago and received a noteworthy bid of just about $38,000 for a certified and graded factory sealed copy in near mint condition. Ironically, it is the noted existence and media attention surrounding the sale of this game that has given rise to the non-collecting public’s
Stadium Events going forward. To be fair, a confirmed case of six factory sealed copies will only affect the sale of factory sealed copies going forward, assuming the owner of that said case chooses to sell. Loose copies will not be affected at all by these findings as of yet. Unfortunately, this lesson serves as a dire warning to those who continue to speculate in such items. By the 1980s, mass production was well under way and mass quantities of toys and games should be expected as a result. We are still finding hordes of factory sealed vintage Star Wars toys from the late 1970s! The truth of the matter is we still do not know how many factory sealed copies of any video game are still out in the proverbial wild. I myself have come into possession of a multitude of factory sealed NES games from the late 1980s and early 1990s many years ago. I acquired most of these games from major retailers back when store clearances were quite common and still have a large portion of them in my possession. The overall collecting community is unaware of my holdings and my decision to collect these games in private is far from being unethical. My cost to acquire these games was only $5 to $10 each back in 1991. Needless to say, these games (even in factory sealed condition) are not as rare as some collectors make them out to be. It should not be shocking to anyone that we are still finding hordes of factory sealed games that have yet to be known to the overall collecting community. Let me offer a dire warning to those that think this is just an isolated incident. The Nintendo

fascination with video games as valuable collectibles. This has affected the video game collecting hobby in numerous negative ways where people now assume that since a copy of Stadium Events is worth five figures their common copies of Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda must be worth hundreds. Unfortunately, as most educated collectors already know, the high end market of any collecting field rarely serves as an accurate barometer for the low end (and copies of Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda are readily available for $10 to $20 each, respectively). Regular readers of my column will know that I urge extreme caution when speculating or investing in massproduced items made after the 1970s. It should come as no surprise that the video game collecting community has been one of my fiercest critics claiming that I continue to demonstrate my disdain of speculation by commenting on both the modern day Nintendo speculative craze and the interest in so-called Lego investing. It should also come as no surprise what happened when a fellow video game collector announced that he had at least one factory sealed case (note that a case contains six factory sealed copies) of Stadium Events in his possession. By the time of the announcement, most video game collecting forums were already abuzz from nervous collectors asking what effect this would have on sales of

American heritage - sold well above its pre-auction estimate, at $298,000. “Lower Hondo, Spring, circa 1940, by Victor Higgins, Blumenschein’s fellow member of the Taos Society of Artists, fetched $131,250. The auction’s offering of masterworks by giants of American Illustration Art included a rare piece of Hollywood history painted by Norman Rockwell: the original promotional art for the 1960 film “Cinderfella. Making its auction debut, the artwork embodies the artistic
collaboration of Rockwell and comedian Jerry Lewis, two American legends. Consigned directly from Mr. Lewis’ collection since Rockwell presented it to him in 1960, this original work achieved $250,000. A highly-desirable Saturday Evening Post cover for July 4, 1931, titled “1776 by Joseph Christian Leyendecker sold for $163,500, against a $60,000 estimate. Preparing the “Boats at Greenwood Lake, 1858, by famed Hudson River artist Jasper Francis Cropsey, sold for $100,000 to lead the auction’s selection of early American landscapes. “Castle Geyser, Yellowstone National Park, 1891, by Grafton Tyler Brown, set an auction record for the artist after a bidding war pushed the price to $81,250, against an $8,000 pre-auction estimate. “Sandia Mountains, 1949, Blumenschein’s stunning work on paper, incorporating pink and orange hues and dynamic lines to provide a striking contrast with the rugged geometric shapes of the mountains, realized an impressive $52,500. “Venice, 1887, by Thomas Moran sold for $93,750. Cyrus Edwin Dallin’s bronze, “Appeal to the Great Spirit, 1913, a bronze from the estate of Richard D. himself will be included. The box has a minimum bid of $3,700. Another item signed by the fighter ace is an autographed card with a clear and unfaded specimen of von Richtofen’s signature. It has Sanke Card number 533, and comes with a certificate of authenticity by the German military autograph expert Stefan Koerlin. Measuring 11.75-by-6.5 inches and professionally framed and matted, the lot’s minimum bid is $3,000. Also sold will be a purple enameled cigarette case, presented by von Richtofen to Werner Voss, a member of Germany’s WWI elite group of aces, on the occasion of his being awarded a “Pour le Merite” (meritorious service). The case has several jewelers hallmarks, is dated “8-4-1917” and shows von Richtofen’s engraved signature. The minimum bid is $3,000. A strong candidate for top lot of the sale will be the black Nazi Luftwaffe Panzer uniform of Lt. Gen. Wilhelm Schmalz, commander of Herman Goring’s feared Fallschim-panzerkorps. Goring’s name is even embroidered into the black wool waist-length tunic. The lot has a minimum bid of $28,000. It comes with nine photo albums including six photos which show Schmalz wearing the uniform. Also expected to do well is a WWI-era presentation Saxon Garde Reiter regiment dress helmet with a three-dimensional silvered lion mounted on a large oval silvered plate affixed to the top. The inside of the helmet is stamped “G.H. Osang, Dresden 1915.” A slot opening on the helmet’s back
An Imperial German WWI fighter pilot’s “pokol” (or silvered victory goblet) showing an embossed panel of two eagles in combat, 7-inches tall, has a minimum bid of $7,500. The area below the eagles’ panel is engraved with the fighter ace’s name: “Otto Esswein, 15-11-1917.” Esswein was credited with 12 aerial victories. He also received the Golden Military Merit Cross. A detailed painting of a WWI German Albatross plane downing a French aircraft, titled “Ehre den Siegern” and artist-signed “J. Hippel ‘17,” has a minimum bid of $1,700. Hippel has portrayed the German aircraft in a side view,

The painting is mounted in an attractive black frame and measures 20-by16.25 inches. Speaking of the Albatross, the pride of Germany’s WWI flying combat corps, an original section of fabric from an Albatross plane from that era will be sold and has a minimum bid of $3,800. The yellow painted canvas-type material, 29.75-by-24-inches, features an 18.25-by-18-inch black Iron Cross with a white border. It is professionally mounted and framed. Also sold will be German helmets, to include a Prussian General’s parade helmet with feather bush and a Hessian General staff officer’s helmet; a German WWI presentation dagger, from Bruno Loerzer to Herman Goring; a black SS-VT German “Deutschland” uniform named to Knights Cross recipient Fritz Witt; and other items, in a wide array of collecting categories. An early 17th-century set of armor, probably American Colonial and featuring a Cromwellian “lobster”-style helmet and Curaissier-style waistlength chest and back armor, mounted on a 19thcentury wood mannequin with an old russet leather jerkin and two period belts, has a minimum bid of $6,500. Thimble collecting may not be as popular as it was just a couple of decades ago, but there’s still a demand, especially for contemporary novelty pieces, sterling thimbles, and antiques. the pieces were sold, the silver content was more contemporary and the auction house refunded well over $10,000 to the buyers. It is important to have a general knowledge of the types and extent of decoration on thimbles from different centuries. For example, 16th-century thimbles were more simply decorated and of a shorter height, but a fake may have too much decoration and/or be too tall. A name that would definitely raise interest is Fabergé; however, experts disagree as to whether any thimbles were actually made by the renowned Russian maker. Continued on page 13

the fakes, fantasies, and reproductions being made need to either copy a soughtafter category or maker or claim to be a prototype that was never put into production. Scammers will also alter thimbles by adding new sterling hallmarks to old silver plate thimbles or by rubbing or scratching makers’ marks off legitimate reproductions. However, during the many decades when more types of thimbles commanded much higher prices, a lot of fakes were produced. Therefore, buyers need to be aware that some fakes have actual age to them. Sterling silver thimbles, particularly those from previous centuries, can command higher prices, so these are a common target of fakers. Originally, the marks on both silver plate and sterling silver thimbles were stamped or struck by hand; this included all marks, from hallmarks to pattern numbers. For a forger to acquire these stamps or even decent replicas would be time consuming and expensive, then add to that the time it takes to strike each mark. Instead, forgers use molds to create the marks. Molded or cast marks are not as sharply defined as struck marks, and every thimble made with that mold will have identical marks. So if you see a seller with multiple sterling or silver plate thimbles - even if they have different designs - check to make sure the marks are not exactly the same. Antique sterling thimbles contained a different silver content than contemporary sterling silver. Forgers have been known to melt down a

In his book “Thimble Collector’s Encyclopedia,” John J. Von Hoelle recounts a personal story that is at once humorous and a warning. He saw a thimble in an antique shop and asked to examine it. He was told with authority that the thimble had been tested and was real ivory and the band around it had tested as being at least 14 carat gold. The proprietor said it had been in one family for at least four generations and may have been made by a wellknown thimble maker in the 1760s. It was being sold for over $300. When Von Hoelle looked inside the thimble, he realized why the piece had looked familiar to him: his own initials were carved inside - he had made the piece himself only three years earlier. One of the most expensive thimbles ever sold at auction was purportedly given to Queen Elizabeth I by one of

Thimbles Continued from page 10
While we certainly cannot enter into that argument, we can make some positive determinations that will rule out a Fabergé association. Some alleged Fabergé thimbles contain the initials of a known workmaster, but the mark indicating where the piece was made is not a city where that particular workmaster worked; sometimes it is also known that the workmaster never created that specific style of object. In other cases, the workmaster’s initials are coupled with a year either before or after he worked for Fabergé. A dead giveaway to a fake is when you see the name “Fabergé” (possibly written in Cyrillic,
sometimes not) as well as the German 800 mark, confirming the piece was not made in Russia. Russian enamel filigree thimbles, both old and new, are made with hand-applied filigree wire. If you find a supposedly Russian enamel filigree thimble that has been molded, it is not Russian. Although the workmanship of contemporary Russian enamel filigree thimbles has become cruder, the filigree is still applied by hand. The whale thimble pictured with this column was made in China for a program that was presented at the 2004 Thimble Collectors International (TCI) convention on scrimshaw. The thimble is made from cattle shin bone and was tea-smoked to give it

However, TCI members have seen it being sold in online auctions with a description of “antique” and “rare.” The best way to get a good understanding of authentic vs. fake thimbles is to join a knowledgeable collecting group like the Thimble Collectors International (TCI). Etch It In Stone: The Granite State Book And Ephemera Show Will Rock New Hampshire Show Is Slated For Sunday, June 5 Marvin Getman of Book and Paper Fairs is excited to announce that this can’t-miss event, The Granite State Book and Ephemera Fair will be held on Sunday, June 5, at the Everett Arena in Concord, N.H. Sponsored by the N.H. Antiquarian Booksellers and ABEBooks, this show is one of the high points in the annual book fair circuit among booksellers and collectors. Admission to this familyfriendly event is free of charge. The Granite State Book and Ephemera Fair will present a full spectrum of antique books and quality ephemera for sale. Ephemera are items made from paper that were not made to stand the test of time, and have since become collectible. Popular categories include correspondence, advertising, historical documents, posters, tickets, brochures, cards, and others. Many dealers at this show are members of New Hampshire Antiquarian Booksellers Association, a professional society advocating the study, preservation, and celebration of fine books and ephemera in a wide range of specialties. All that makes “New Hampshire” great is a prominent theme among dealers presenting their treasures at this show. And no author better embodies all that makes the state so distinct than favorite son, Robert Frost. The following Frost related show highlights are certain to warm the hearts of showgoers. Larry Druckenbrod of Holly Books will present a first edition, first printing of the “expanded version” of Frost’s “Selected Poems” from 1923. This rarity, one of only 3,473 copies printed, is signed by Frost on the title page.
Deborah Lavoie of Deborah Lavoie Fine Books & Paper Treasures will feature a fifth printing of “The Complete Poems of Robert Frost.” It is inscribed, “To Anna Carelton Hurd, from Hervey’s Friend, Robert Frost, Boston, Nov 30, 1955.” Richard Thorner of Resser-Thorner Antiques will offer a signed copy of Frost’s “The Book of Knowledge.” John Townsend of Towns End Books will spotlight several Frost selections, including a first edition of “A Boy’s Will,” one of only 750 copies printed; a first edition, signed copy of “West-Running Brook;” a signed, limited edition of “Collected Poems,” one of only 1,000 printed; and a first edition of “Steeple Bush” in its original dust jacket. Ben Koenig of The Country Bookshop will offer a signed, first edition of Frost’s “In The Clearing” in its original dust jacket. Also, Susan Liebegott of Enchanted Books will bring a small collection of picture books authored by Lesley Frost Ballantine, daughter of Robert Frost. Other rock-solid, “Granite State” themed showstoppers include, a scrapbook “time capsule,” circa 1920-50, featuring a plethora of notes, clipped recipes, and newspaper articles assembled by a N.H. housewife and a late 19th-century print advertisement from the Portsmouth, N.H., Stovene Stove Polish Company, both from by Lizzy Young of Lizzyoung Bookseller. A complete set of White Mountain Appalachian Mountain Club guides from 1908 through 1976 and a group of rare immature Sawyer hand-painted photographs made into decorative pins will be offered from
Richard Mori of Mori Books. “It’s safe to say that this N.H. show is a perfect way to kick off the summer season! And for the first time ever, admission is free in order to encourage as many people to attend as possible. With a record-breaking 70 dealers presenting an extraordinary range of world-class antique books and ephemera, there is truly something for everyone. You won’t leave empty handed,” said Marvin Getman, show producer. The Granite Book and Ephemera Fair will be held at the Everett Arena, located at 15 Loudon Road in Concord
The Granite State Book and Ephemera Fair is sponsored by the New Hampshire Antiquarian Booksellers Association and ABEBooks and presented by Book and Paper Fairs. Book and Paper Fairs produces some of the top book and ephemera fairs in the Northeast U.S. For more information and a calendar of shows, visit www.bookandpaperfairs.com.
