The Historic East Berlin Show Annual Event Kicks Off Local Anniversary Celebration By Karl Pass
T
he East Berlin Historical Preservation Society (EBHPS) hosted its annual antiques show on May 1 to 3 in the town’s community center. Founded on May 8, 1764, the small Adams County, Pa., town of East Berlin celebrated its 250th anniversary with a series of events during the first week of May, and the antique show kicked off the celebration. A parade down Main Street featuring the Old Guard Fife and Drum Corps from Washington, D.C., took place following the show’s closing on Saturday. Several history tours, presentations, an oldtime carnival, and a community dinner also took place throughout the week. Along with the town’s Colonial Day street fair, the Historic East Berlin Antique Show is a fundraiser for EBHPS. The volunteer-run committee put together 26 exhibiting dealers for this year’s show, which was a few

As with many regional shows, East Berlin draws upon its neighboring towns for support. In East Berlin’s case, it is towns such as New Oxford, H a n o v e r , Gettysburg, and York where most Richard Fox as Benjamin Frankin gave a showgoers come Re-enacter lecture on Saturday morning discussing circa 1764 from. The show is events and culture. Burnside, Ky., dealer Lynne Dingus brought what she called a circa 1820 or 1830 New England marriage chest from her collection to the show. “I’ve had it for at least 40 years, and I’ve never had it for sale,” said Dingus. It is carved “John Felix & RF Lenox Mass.” It was priced at $8,500.

The hours were better than they had been in the past. Radio ads were done with the Harrisburg WITF public radio station, lectures were held, and gift bags given out to all dealers. On Friday, a lecture on Chinese ceramics and the China trade was given by volunteer show manager Michael Hrinyak. On Saturday, re-enactor Richard Fox as Benjamin Franklin spoke about circa1764 events, politics, culture, and the arts.
The lectures were an added bonus to the show and is something the show committee plans to continue. “We already have a committment for a new talk next year on the subject of samplers,” (Continued on page 2)

Original $1,000 Face Proof Charter #290 US National Bank Note To Highlight Philip Weiss Auctions Sale An exceedingly rare proof of an original series $1,000 face proof charter #290 U.S. National Bank Note, one of only two examples in existence, will come up for bid in an auction planned for Thursday, May 29, at Philip Weiss Auctions, in the firm’s gallery located at 74 Merrick Road in Lynbrook, N.Y. The auction, being held on a weekday with a rare 1 p.m. start, will also feature an important single-owner postcard collection that could serve as an instant online business or form the basis of a dealer’s show stock; an outstanding single-owner stamp collection from Germany; and a complete set of Morgan silver dollars (to be sold as one lot), all high-grade including rare proofs. But the undisputed highlight of the auction will be the $1,000 National Bank Note, which carries a pre-sale esti-
mate of $80,000-$120,000. The Fr. 465 original series face, printed on India paper and mounted on card stock, is dated March 1, 1864, and is hole-punch canceled. The image, a Chittenden Spinner from the Forth National Bank of the City of New York, is virtually flawless. Writing in the esteemed trade publication Bank Note Reporter, Peter Huntoon said of the note, “Needless to say, this is a stellar discovery of the first magnitude. Proofs of otherwise non-collectible type notes have come into their own in recent years as sophisticated, high-power collectors have come to realize that issued notes of certain types like this are unobtainable.” At the Heritage Florida United Numismatics auction event held in January, a $1,000 series of an 1891 Silver Certificate uniface face proof sold for $82,250. A few months later, at the April Central States show (in an auction also hosted by Heritage), the only known copy of an 1891 $1,000 note, once owned by Amon Carter, sold for $2.585 million. So, while grading the note This rare proof of an original series $1,000 in the upcoming face proof charter #290 U.S. National Bank auction was easy Note is estimated at $80,000-$120,000. It’s worth pointing out that there is another piece of fractional currency in the upcoming auction (albeit not as rare). It is especially strong with complete sets from renowned British publisher Raphael Tuck. Also in the vast collection are artist-signed cards, expositions and fairs cards, Halloween cards and more. “This is absolutely the finest
postcard collection we’ve ever offered,” said Weiss. Stamps in the auction will pique the interest of philatelists, both seasoned and novice. SHOPS & CENTERS Collector Anecdotes And Antics The Unfortunate Demise Of The Auction Catalog
Sitting across my desk atop a bookshelf that holds some of my favorite personal mementos is a massive collection of various reference materials on the antiques and collectibles trade. This collection of books, guides, encyclopedias, articles, and trade papers is one of my most valuable resources. Contained within this collection are several books long out of print and a few underground reference guides that are no longer available and very hard to find. Some of

paid and where I originally bought the items in question. This is actually helpful to the auction house as well who may now have an opportunity to resell these same items again and assist my heirs in not being taken advantage of by unscrupulous dealers who prey on the estates of deceased collectors. This is something that a lot of collectors like me fear and can best be avoided by taking the proper steps to ensure that my heirs take an active role in understanding what I collect, the overall value, and where my collection is stored. Unfortunately the days of the printed auction catalog are numbered. The cost of full color photography and the use of high end printing actually make printed auction catalogs a losing proposition for most auction galleries. Even at a retail cost of $30 to $40 each most auction galleries are still losing money on these printed works of art.

extensive look at similar items I may come across or items that I wish to start to collect. In fact when someone asks me how much an item is worth or what an item in question is I usually consult an auction catalog first as opposed to the traditional antique or collectible reference guide. This practice has continued to serve me quite well and has saved me a lot of time over the years. Auction catalogs also serve other purposes that few people realize as they help authenticate and validate the items bought at a particular sale. Whenever space becomes an issue and I have to pack a portion of my collection away in storage I often pack the items with a copy of their original invoice along with a copy of the auction catalog as well. This practice not only serves my own interests, but it also serves my heirs as well should they need to locate these items upon my untimely death and need to know exactly how much I

these books are collectible in their own right and others were painstakingly compiled from some of the brightest and most dedicated minds within the trade. Within this same collection of materials is another series of printed and bound materials provided by some of the most respected sellers in the business: auction catalogs. To the average collector an auction catalog is nothing more than a listing of items available in a particular auction at a set time that is easily forgotten after the noted sale. However, to a dedicated enthusiast within the trade an auction catalog is so much more. It is valuable resource that should never be overlooked when one is looking to study or learn about a particular subset within the trade. Some of the best reference materials I have are contained within the pages of auction catalogs provided by some of my favorite auction houses. It is these catalogs that offer me the most

Worse still is the number of auctiongoers who believe that just because they attend an auction that they should be provided a catalog free of charge. Each auction house sets its own parameters regarding catalog distribution. While I personally can attest that I tend to spend more with an auction house that makes every effort to send me a free catalog for one of their sales I also know other collectors who don’t even use the catalog they receive. Worse yet, other bidders tend to feel jaded if a catalog is not sent to them. As a result most auction houses have been moving towards the use of digital catalogs or online listings that can easily be printed by the patron if he or she chooses to do so. Yet another issue facing both auction houses and bidders alike is whether or not bidders will even purchase the auction catalogs for the sale in question. I have been to auctions where the auction catalog sold out before I arrived and I have been to other auctions where they had catalogs left over for a

some very rare and beautiful banks, as well as some color variations we’ve never seen before,” said RSL partner Leon Weiss. One of those rare variations is a Hen and Chick bank that features a brown hen on a red base. Because Robison tended to buy in small regional auctions as opposed to larger, betterpublicized sales, many of his banks will be “new” to the marketplace and to collectors, even those who are advanced. They’ve sat quietly on Robison’s display shelves for decades, some since the 1970s. “It’s a fresh collection, full of surprises,” Weiss noted. One of those fresh surprises is an exquisite five-hole variation of the Hold the Fort bank. A pedigreed entry from the Robison collection is the Uncle Sam bank that was first runnerup in a competition hosted by the Mechanical Bank Collectors of America in the late 1980s. By means of comparison, the winning bank that year belonged to Steven and Marilyn Steckbeck, leading lights of the hobby long known for their superior collection. Also included in the sale is the last of the Rich Garthoeffner mechanical bank collection. “As everyone in business knows, Rich Garthoeffner is a Americana, folk art and toy dealer from Pennsylvania, and he has never compromised on quality,” said Steven Weiss, the third partner in RSLAuctions. “The banks in his private collection are exceptional by anyone’s standards. An example would be the Stevens Girl Skipping Rope bank that Garthoeffner purchased in the early 1980s at Parke-Bernet in Manhattan. At the time, the price he paid for the bank set an auction record.” Other gems in the Garthoeffner group include a Stevens bank known as Professor Pug Frog’s Great Bicycle Feat, with strong colors and a beautiful patina, and two near-mint buildings, a Magic Bank and a Novelty Bank. Filling out the high-rent neighborhood is a very fine consignment from an architectural bank collector in New

York City. “We’ve been selling selections from this consignor over the past two years. This time he has given us 30 outstanding architectural banks, including a superb Boston State House and a very rare painted Chicago Bank that has a flag embossed ‘Chicago’ overhead,” Steven said. RSL’s auction will take place at the company’s new gallery located off I-78 at 295 U.S. Highway 22 East in Whitehouse Station, N.J. All forms of bidding will be available, including Internet live bidding through LiveAuctioneers.com. The auction will begin at 10 a.m. A complimentary buffet lunch will be served at the auction. Cordier Auctions sold a rare 1860 photo album of China in its Spring Antique & Fine Art Auction in Harrisburg, Pa., on May 17 and 18. The album contained 56 images of China during the Second Opium War taken by Felice Beato. They are considered some of the earliest photographs of the country. It sold for $410,000 (including buyer’s premium). Felice Beato, an Italian/British photographer, was also one of the first war photographers. The 56 albumen prints included 10 multiple part panoramas and each print was titled and dated in English and German. Beato accompanied the British Army into China in 1860. His photographs captured not only strategic military positions and the aftermath of battle but also buildings such as the Summer Palace before its destruction by the British. The album was consigned to Cordier Auctions during one of its open appraisal days held every Wednesday at their auction house. The buyer was Stephan Loewentheil of the 19th Century Rare Book and Photograph Shop, a rare book, manuscript, and photograph dealer with shops in Stevenson, Md., and Brooklyn, N.Y. A full report of the two-day spring catalog sale will be in a future issue. For more information, call 717-731-8662 or visit www.CordierAuction.com. The images are four photos from the album.

Aetna Insurance Company Reverse Glass Sign Sells For $51,300 At Showtime Auction Services An Aetna Insurance Company (Hartford, Conn.) reverse glass painted sign with mother of pearl inlay, 34 inches square and in excellent like-new condition, sold for $51,300 at a three-day auction event held April 4 to 6 at the Washtenaw Farm Council Grounds in Ann Arbor, Mich. The sale was conducted by Showtime Auction Services, based in Woodhaven, Mich. “That Aetna sign was one of the most impressive reverse glass signs we’ve ever seen, just beautiful, said Mike Eckles of Showtime Auction Services. The sign tied for top lot of the auction with an El
Here is a 1928 red Ford Model A fire hose and ladder truck, with patriotic banners and ribbons. It sold for $31,200.
Bart Gin tin sign, housed in the original frame and copyrighted in 1905 by Wilson Distilleries (Kaufman & Strauss Company, N.Y.). That sign also sold for $51,300. In all, more than 1,800 lots from two major collections, plus consignments from over 100 other advanced collectors, came up for bid in an auction that grossed more than $1.3 million. Headlining the event were the lifetime collections of Robert and Janet Straub of
Kansas and Neil J. Frick of Michigan. Both collections were very diverse, with items from more than 40 categories. The auction was a bit different than past Showtime sales, in that live, Internet and phone bidding were permitted all three days. “We used to have live-only auctions the first day of each sale, but that won’t be the case any longer, Eckles said. “From now on, Internet bidding will be available the entire time. Real-time bidding has really taken hold, and we’re obligated to make our consignments open to all forms of bidding, he said. That said, Eckles was somewhat surprised by the large inp e r s o n turnout, around 200 people each day. “There were more folks at this auction than our fall sale, he remarked, “And because of how we spread out all the categories, the audience kept changing. He added Internet bidding was heavy as well; 2,500 people registered online via LiveAuctioneers.com and Invaluable.com. The following are additional highlights from the
auction. All prices quoted include a buyer’s premium that ranged from 14 to 20 percent, depending on how the winning bid was placed. A Hires Root Beer dispenser, the green version, depicting the Hines Boy and 5 cents, sold for $49,200.

Fooled By Fakes
By Anita Stratos
Drawing The Line On Fake Montblanc Pens
may be too red or almost transparent when held up to light. Once you see what a real Montblanc looks like against bright light, you’ll immediately recognize the difference. Montblanc uses precious metals on most of their pens, such as platinum, 18K gold, or 14K
gold, and many of their fountain pen nibs are also made from precious metals, depending on the model. Their “jewelry editions” also contain real diamonds. The Meisterstuck Solitaire Royal Legrand has over 1,200 diamonds, which you can have evaluated by a jeweler. On the other hand, some fakes, though marked 14K or 18K, are either gold plated over steel or polished steel without plating. If a magnet reacts to the nib, it’s not gold. Also look for areas where the plating may have rubbed or flaked off. The back of an authentic gold nib should be yellow gold, whereas the back of a fake may be crude looking or unfinished. A mark of “iridium” is automatically not a Montblanc nib. The nib of a fake may also feel stiffer when writing and the engraved details may be off, possibly shallow or not as crisp as they should be. The clip ring on an authentic Montblanc pen should be engraved with a serial number. The fake I examined, which was very cheaply done, didn’t have one at all; however, other fakes may. There are two things you can do here: first, make sure the serial number is in the correct font and is level, and second, put the serial number into an online search engine. Many fakes carry identical serial numbers that have been reported in online pen collecting forums. For example, it’s
further. Every part of the pen needs to be checked because there have been cases where portions of an authentic Montblanc pen are used on a counterfeit piece, and viceversa. The key here is that companies such as Montblanc that are renowned for their high
duction styles on certain elements can change, so your pen may have a differentlooking part that may not necessarily indicate a fake. Even if your pen passes one or two of these tests, continue examining the pen
standards and quality don’t overlook even the smallest detail. Comparing any pen in question with a definitively authentic pen of the same model or posting photos in a reputable online forum will help settle any question of authenticity. You can also take your pen to an
authorized Montblanc retailer for authentication. Always insist that any reseller provide you with a written refund guarantee in case the pen proves to be a fake. All photos are of a fake Montblanc and property of the author. At a glance: Signs of a fake/counterfeit: 1. Missing “PIX” mark on newer pens. 2. Grittiness when unscrewing a fountain pen cap. 3. Uneven letters/numbers or incorrect font. 4. Serial number EN1323305 is on multiple fakes. Reference books, websites, and collecting groups are the best ways to keep from being fooled by fakes. Here are a few: “The Montblanc Diary & Collector’s Guide” by Jens Rosler; “Montblanc Collectables: Creations of Passion” by Montblanc; The Fountain Pen Network ( w w w. f o u n t a i n p e n n e t work.com); and Pen Collectors of America ( w w w. p e n c o l l e c t o r s o f america.com).

well documented that the serial number EN1323305 appears on a number of fake Montblanc Chopin pens. D o n ’t be fooled into thinking that a supposed Montblanc pen is authentic simply because it’s being sold complete with its box and official papers. Those items are commonly faked as well in order to make the counterfeit pen seem less questionable. There are many buyers who don’t question the authenticity of a high-end pen just because it’s being offered

does not appear on vintage pieces, but it should be on newer (circa 1990 and forward) pens. Some counterfeiters are beginning to add this, so while it’s something that should be considered, don’t base your decision entirely on its presence. Some vintage pens also do not carry the “Germany” mark, so it’s best to use a reliable reference source to determine which models were marked and when the mark first appeared. In any case, no Montblanc will have the rust you see on the back of the clip in the photo. It’s also important to know the color combinations on pens that are offered in colors other than black. Some counterfeiters actually produce fantasy colors, that is, colors that Montblanc never used on that particular model pen or may not have used at all. Yo u ’ l l need to t a k e fountain pens apart completely, but while doing so, notice if there’s a gritty feel when unscrewing the cap. Authentic Montblancs unscrew smoothly, while a fake may not. Once you’ve taken the piece apart, hold the body up to a strong light source. The “precious resin” of a real Montblanc black pen will have a somewhat translucent, deep red glow. While some fakes won’t have any translucency at all, others

“Why on earth would anyone treat an expensive Montblanc pen so roughly?” That was my immediate reaction when I found a beaten up black ballpoint pen with the distinguishing Montblanc white star on the tip in an auction tray lot. And then it struck me Could this be a fake? Are high-end pens the targets of fraudsters? Of course they are, big time. A closer check of the pen’s clip revealed the imprint “Taiwan” on the side, an obvious giveaway. Montblanc pens are made in G e r m a n y. This faker d i d n ’t even try hard to fool buyers! I had to bid on the lot just to further study this fake piece, which the auctioneer claimed was authentic and said he mistakenly put in a tray lot. To be fair, his expertise lies in a completely different area, he probably saw the star and assumed it was real. The point is that you need to rely on your own knowledge to confirm claims of authenticity by any seller, even the most well-intentioned make mistakes. Whether it’s an older collectible pen or a newer model, Montblanc pens command high prices, so fraud is no surprise. And Montblancs aren’t the only luxury pens being replicated: Rolex, Bvlgari, Korloff and others are also being copied. A cursory online search revealed many websites offering replica luxury pens at a fraction of the price. Collectors say that while some replicas and counterfeits are poorly done, others are frighteningly similar to originals and very difficult to detect. Montblanc makes ballpoints, rollerballs, and fountain pens. For now, we’ll focus on fountain pens, the most frequently faked pieces. Start with a little superficial detective work: for newer models, check under the clip for the letters “PIX” and “Made in Germany.” The “PIX” mark

A Set Of Six Diminutive Chinese Porcelain Famille Rose Panels Sells For $57,600 At Nadeau’s Auction Gallery the top lot of the auction. It was the firm’s annual American and Asian Auction, held in Nadeau’s gallery at 25 Meadow Road in Windsor, Conn. The set of panels, boasting floral and figural decorations and measuring 14.5-by-4.75inches, carried a modest pre-sale estimate of $500$800. Finishing many times that is a testament to the robust health of the Chinese antiques market. To further illustrate the point, if the set were substantially larger, as some are, it might have commanded up to $100,000 or more. “The American antiques, European antiques, estate jewelry A Russian icon with gilt silver over a wood panel and a crown and original artworks all did set with colored stones sold for well in this auction,” said Ed Nadeau of Nadeau’s Auction $15,600.

It helped, of course, that we had all fresh estate merchandise, but I can’t stress enough how wildly popular Chinese antiques are.” A 19th-century Chinese famille rose framed porcelain plaque on a stand with finely painted depictions of Fusing, Wu-sing and Shou-laso brought $36,000 against a pre-sale estimate of $1,000$2,000, and a pair of 19th- or 20th-century Chinese framed reverse paintings on mirrors showing a young man and a female servant sold for $14,400, though only expectThis framed map of the world ed to bring $400-$800. by John Speed, dated 1651, A 19th- or 20th-century The oil-on-canvas painting by Jules J.
