Rare 1960s Figures Stand Out At Cordier’s G.I. Joe Auction

Rare 1856 Campaign Flag Sells For $275,000, Shattering World Record
With her head turned to the right, as though surveying the medical equipment displayed alongside her in the window box, the nurse in crisp medical whites does not look like the typical combat-ready soldiers normally conjured by the name “G.I. Joe.” Nonetheless, she was the focus of a battle as bidders competed to win her at Cordier’s April 23 G.I. Joe Auction. The auction featured hundreds of G.I. Joe action figures, many of them, like the nurse, in the original boxes. All came from the same single-owner collection. The 1967 nurse was the highlight of the auction,

Swann Galleries Auction Features Strong Showing For Edward S. Curtis Photographs On April 20, Swann Galleries held the auction titled “Images and Objects: Photographs and Photobooks,” setting several records for both early and modern works. Swann Galleries consistently offers a varied selection of rare and iconic works by Edward S. Curtis, with nearly all of the offered lots selling above or within the estimate in this sale. Highlights included a striking portrait of “Red Cloud, Oglala,” 1905, which sold for $32,500, a record for the work, above a high estimate of $9,000. The “Scout, Apache,” 1906, a dramatic orotone in the original frame depicting a Native American silhouetted on a horse, more than doubled its high estimate of $12,000 to sell for $27,500, a record for an orotone of the image. Another orotone in its original frame, “An Oasis in the Badlands,” 1905, was purchased by a collector for $21,250, above a high estimate of $15,000. Bastions of the art of photography performed well, with the highest price in the sale going to a group of 60 plates from Eadweard Muybridge’s seminal “Animal Locomotion,” 1887, selling to the trade for $45,000. Ansel Adams’s iconic “Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico,” 1941, printed circa 1976, went to the trade for $42,500. Five of the six works offered by New York-based vernacular photographer Weegee (née Arthur Fellig) found buyers, led by “Coney

Works from the last 50 years performed well, with high prices going to Robert Frank’s “Sick of Goodby’s, Mabou,” 1978, and “Zuma #9,” 1978, by John Divola ($32,500 and $10,000, respectively). A selection of 38 superb works of art created by Native North American artists is currently on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art until Sunday, Oct. 8. Drawn from the more than 870 pieces assembled by philanthropists Eugene and Clare Thaw, “American Indian Art from the Fenimore Art Museum: The Thaw Collection” attests to the long-standing excellence of the aesthetic traditions of North America’s Native peoples. Spanning the first millennium to the 20th century, it will showcase indigenous

masterpieces in various media—sculpture, painting, drawing, basketry, textiles, ceramics, and decorative arts. Among the highlights are a rare whelk shell gorget (ca. 1100–1400) carved by a Mississippian sculptor; a monumental war record (ca. 1880) vividly painted on animal hide by Plains masters; a rare, nearly life-size Kwakwaka’wakw potlatch figure from the late 19th century; and a waterproof Kamleika garment (or parka) made of seal or other sea-mammal gut from the Arctic region. The exhibition is made possible by the Friends of the Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. This exhibit will feature a variety of Native artistic creations, including an ancient Arctic carving made of sea mammal ivory; examples of the dramatic sculptural arts of the Pacific Northwest; painted ceramics and weaving from the millennia-long tradition in the Southwest; refined basketry from California and the Great Basin; iconic pictorial narratives chronicling events of the Plains; and robust aestheticized weaponry of the Eastern Woodlands. The impressive achievements of female basket weavers from California and the Great Basin region are evident in an award-winning basket made by the renowned practitioner of that art form, Louisa
Keyser (or Dat So La Lee); a signature work by her sister-inlaw, Scees Bryant Possock; and by the Yokuts weaver Mrs. Dick Francisco, a monumental woven gambling tray made for a dice game called huuchuish. Also of great emphasis in this selection of Fenimore holdings is a collection of several singular Plains Indian creations, the most notable of which is a rare 19th-century war record memorializing a battle between the Lakota and Crow (Apsa’alooka). A landmark intact ledger book by the artist Black Hawk (Sans Arcs Lakota) is a treasure trove of information about life on the Plains; it illustrates hunting and dance scenes and includes natural history drawings and numerous depictions of warfare and ceremony. About the Thaws Eugene Thaw is recognized as a leading dealer and collector of Old Master drawings and paintings. Thaw and his wife, Clare, first began acquiring indigenous American art in Santa Fe, N.M., in 1987. From the outset, they approached American Indian material culture as fine art, applying the same exacting standards of connoisseurship as they applied to other areas of their collection. They have engaged in a 30-year quest to assemble exceptional works of art produced by cultures throughout North America, from 500 B.C. to the present. In 1991, the
Thaws decided to share their collection with the American public by donating it to the Fenimore Art Museum, where it is on permanent view. Today, the collection is the point of departure for a dynamic study of Native American art. This presentation, in Mr. Thaw’s 90th year, celebrates their role as benefactors to many New York City arts institutions, including the Morgan Library and Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, where he is an Honorary Trustee. The exhibition is organized by Eva Fognell, curator at the Fenimore Art Museum, Cooperstown, N.Y., in collaboration with Christine Giuntini, conservator, and with assistance from James Doyle, assistant curator, both in The Met’s department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas. Related Publication Coinciding with the exhibition is the publication of the second edition of the Thaw collection catalogue raisonné. “Art of the North American Indians: The Thaw Collection at the Fenimore Art Museum,” a 520-page illustrated catalogue published by the Fenimore Art Museum, includes essays written by leading scholars of Native American art. It will be available for purchase in The Met Store.

These shows give the collectors an opportunity to exhibit their material; buy, sell, and exchange phones, parts and memorabilia; and to help each other to build collections. In addition, this show in Lancaster will feature a section where working examples of the switching equipment that used to make up telephone exchanges is demonstrated. It provides an excellent opportunity for those who are interested in the technological side of historic telephony to share their knowledge and learn from each other. Collector Anecdotes And Antics A “Killer Book Worth “Tons Of Money I begin this column admitting that I dislike writing articles about books based on the greater antiques and collectibles trade. In my opinion, there are far more important topics to discuss in the trade than commentary on works that have already been written. Therefore, the fact that I am discussing a book that was published in 2011 should tell you something. Author Maureen Stanton penned what can easily be considered one of the best books ever written on the overall state of the antiques and collectibles trade. Ironically, what makes this feat even more spectacular is the fact that Stanton does not identify as a collector herself. She fully admits in her musings that she has absolutely no knowledge of the antiques trade and as a result, she wrote her book so that it could be enjoyed and understood by collectors and noncollectors alike. Titled “Killer Stuff and Tons of Money, the book was released with little fanfare in June of 2011, while the overall economy was still dealing with the aftermath of the economic crisis that hit in 2008. The book follows ethical antiques dealer “Curt Avery, whom the
author describes in detail while reminding her readers that the name is a pseudonym used to prevent the identity of a real-life man. This allows “Avery to deliver an honest assessment about the antiques business without fear of criticism from others in the trade. And make no mistake, it is this honest assessment that makes the book so good! It becomes clear early on in the book that Avery is an antiques dealer that anyone would want to do business with. His ethics, work manner, and true passion are evident in just about every action he takes while attempting to carve out a living for himself and his family in an everchanging marketplace. The author does an excellent job of painting an accurate picture of the antiques trade following the Great Recession. The book is full of excellent quips and inside information courtesy of the inside perspective of the dealer. Reading about Avery’s love of primitives and his quest to find authentic pieces to sell to his growing customers list is a welcome breath of fresh air compared to reality television shows such as “American Pickers and “Pawn Stars, which debuted around this same time focused solely on dollar signs. That is not to say that the book in itself doesn’t focus on the monetary aspect
of the antiques and collectibles marketplace it surveys. In fact, that aspect is one of the best reasons to read the book. Not only does the book go into painstaking detail about the financial aspect of the antique and collectibles marketplace, but it also takes an unprecedented look at what goes on behind the scenes at auctions and shows. The book is well worth reading just for this commentary alone. Ironically, pop culture collectors will find a lot of great material here as well. There is an excellent interview with Metropolis Comics and Collectibles founder Vincent Zurzolo, who offers his take on the modern-day comic book collecting scene. Stanton does an excellent job comparing the strength of the overall antiques market with that of the modern-day collectibles market. She even compares and contrasts both markets in a way that has raised criticism from some longtime enthusiasts. Still, one of the best reasons I recommend this book to fellow collectors and enthusiasts is the amount of inside information. Since the dealer’s identity is protected, Avery freely speaks his mind about specific subjects in the trade that can be considered taboo and controversial to some. I don’t want to spoil or misrepresent some of this
commentary, but readers of the book will understand and appreciate what is being discussed, especially if they have an active role in the antiques trade. This commentary also serves as excellent validation as to how hard it is to enter the antiques and collectibles trade. The book is unfortunately not without some criticism that I want to be sure to point out. It needs to be emphasized that the book was published in 2011, when economic conditions were a bit different than they are today. As a result, I caution casual readers and enthusiasts alike to take the sentiment on the “death of the antiques trade with a grain of salt. Critics of the book have mentioned that the book is too negative
ITY OVER 70 QUAL DEALERS
death of the antiques trade were mostly overblown. I have recommended this book to almost everyone I know who has an interest or curiosity about the antiques and collectibles trade. Regardless of the criticisms noted, there hasn’t been another book of this magnitude and scope that captures the essence of the trade so eloquently. And in a world full of biased, internet-based blog ramblings on the trade, the glut of yearly price guides sitting on store shelves, and the ill-predicted death of the written word thanks to the rise of electronic publishing, that alone says something. I encourage everyone to pick up a copy of Stanton’s book and enjoy. The antiques marketplace may never be the same again, and your perspective may change right along with it.

and doesn’t seem to point out that before 2011 when the bulk of the book was written, the economic impact of the Great Recession was directly affecting all markets, and the greater antiques market was not immune. Just to clarify, I got a lot of great deals in the antiques and collectibles marketplace between the years 2008 through 2012 that will be the subject of an upcoming article. As a result, readers need to realize the time frame and circumstances when the book was written so they can form an accurate assessment on why the author and even Avery think the proverbial sky is falling. These tirades add a certain realism to the book and to the misadventures of the dealer, but readers engaged in the book today will quickly realize that most of these quips predicting the

should not play with dolls, the company used the term “action figure in its marketing. The toys grew to be so iconic that G.I. Joe was inducted into the National Toy Hall of Fame in Rochester, N.Y., in 2003. Other high points of the sale included a 1964 G.I. Joe Black Action Soldier, one of the first toys of its kind to be
marketed specifically to African-American children. Mint in the original box, it brought $850. The sale was held at the company’s Harrisburg, Pa., auction house, with bidders participating both live and online. Prices reported are hammer prices and do not include buyer’s premium. New Exhibit At Roosevelt House Explores Enduring Impact Of The New Deal On New York City The Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute at Hunter College will open a three-month-long exhibition celebrating - and, for the first time, chronicling - the vast range of public projects funded by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s administration over its first 10 years. “The New Deal in New York City, 1933-1943: Posters, Murals, Maps, and Photographs” opened on May 11 and will run until Saturday, Aug 19. The exhibit takes place in the very home where FDR and his brain trust actually planned the outlines of the New Deal during the presidential transition of 1932-33. The exhibition is made possible by a generous grant from the Stepanski Family Charitable Trust. The exhibition’s opening night featured a panel of New Deal experts, including the dean of FDR scholars, William Leuchtenberg, moderated by Hunter College professor of urban planning Owen Gutfreund. “How appropriate that Roosevelt House, the very site where Franklin D. Roosevelt and his brain trust conceived so much of the New Deal after the election of 1932, now serves as a venue to celebrate its impact on his beloved New York. FDR made sure his plans for national recovery embraced art, architecture, public works, and culture from Post Office murals to the Triborough Bridge to neighborhood swimming pools to the north building at our own Hunter College. For the first time, the enduring impact of this wave of creativity, its transformative influence on society, not to mention its extraordinary impact on economic recovery, has been quantified and recorded. Representative samples of these will be on display in the Roosevelt House show, along with photographs and original works created by artists employed by the federal programs. The exhibit also features numerous posters designed by artists that promoted New Deal programs and services, from health and safety, to education and recreation, to music and theatrical performances, to Social Security and unemployment compensation. As a result, New Yorkers in the 1930s were never at a loss for information about how their government took care of their needs. And visitors will also recognize how much of their lives are still shaped by the New Deal. The exhibition also includes examples of the Federal Writers Project drawn from the Harry Carsch collection at Roosevelt House. The Writers Project employed 6,000 writers, historians, editors, photographers, and cartographers to capture the
character of each state in the State Guide Series, and then additional books focused on cities, regions, and special topics. Interest in these volumes continues as re-publication continues apace. New Yorkers have long been able to purchase a paperback version of the original New York City guide and compare the neighborhood descriptions there with present day communities. Those in the performing arts were also eligible for New Deal programs. The Federal Theater Project, the Federal Music Project, and the Federal Dance Project supported a whole generation of talented people, kept the lights on Broadway theaters, and brought culture and education to every borough, for free or very low prices. Posters and photographs evoke the many choices people had to attend concerts or music lessons, to see an avant garde dance performance, or attend the theater for a classic, like Macbeth, or the experimental productions like the Living Newspaper, or a puppet show

for children. The exhibit also samples the brick-and-mortar programs of the New Deal, highlighting education, healthcare, and housing. Numerous schools for elementary grades through college level were built, including new buildings for Hunter College, in Manhattan and the Bronx, and the entirely new Brooklyn College campus. New York was the innovator and leader in building and designing publically owned and operated housing, as much to employ construction workers as to clear slums and provide decent apartments to hardworking, low-income New Yorkers. And the New Deal offered a broad range of health services, for free or low cost, and built hospitals and health clinics throughout the city. Examples of all of these can be seen in the exhibit. “The New Deal in New York City” combines original materials from the Roosevelt House collection with additional material provided by The The section on “Housing and Health” has reproductions of Harlem Hospital Franklin D. Roosevelt murals. Continued on page 15

“Adonis & Aphrodite” is a 1950s-modern pair created by Betty Harrington for the Ceramic Arts Studio. The 2017 CAS Collectors Convention will be held Aug. 26 in Madison, Wis. This year’s theme, “Ceramic Arts Studio: Past, Present, and Future,” celebrates the studio’s many fabulous figurines, which spanned the decades from historic to futuristic.
On Saturday, Aug. 26, in Madison, Wis., get ready to hop aboard your personal time machine. That’s when “CAS Collectors,” the club for all those with an interest in the work of Ceramic Arts Studio, presents the 2017 CAS Collectors Convention. This year’s theme, “Ceramic Arts Studio: Past, Present and Future!” is an extra-special celebration of all the fabulous figurines created by CAS. From the historic to the futuristic, the imagination of ceramics designer Betty Harrington and her studio associates spanned the decades. Their creations brightened homes from coast to coast during the 1940s and
’50s, still brighten hearts today, and will continue to brighten collectors’ hearts for decades to come. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., convention attendees will take in the Wisconsin Pottery Association Show and Sale at the Alliant Energy Center. Later, all will gather at Madison’s Howard Johnson Plaza for the convention festivities. Activities and décor will center around a fun-filled tribute to the studio’s illustrious heritage. There will be party favors and take-home souvenirs, door prizes, colorful centerpieces - in short, everything that makes such a gathering so unforgettable. Getting the evening underway will be a social hour and
the popular “CAS on Display Contest.” All in attendance are invited to submit entries. A buffet dinner, raffle, and membership meeting will be followed by the club’s annual auction. Events will conclude with door prizes and presentation of the 2017 CAS Collectors Commemorative. Convention registration, which remains at $60 per person, includes all evening activities, plus the commemorative. Registrations received by Thursday, June 15, will be eligible for an “Earliest Earlybird” prize drawing, to be held at the convention. Hunter College acquired the house from the family in 1942 after the death the President’s mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt. It became a treasured part of the college where students met in clubs, worked on publications, and sponsored social events for the wider community. After 50 years of use, the house was closed in 1992. Hunter College restored the building and reopened it as the Roosevelt House Public Policy Institute in 2010. The house hosts classes in human rights and public policy, free public programs in the evenings, conferences and
meetings, and tours. “The New Deal in New York City” was curated by Roosevelt historian Deborah Gardner, who also curated the popular 2016 exhibition, “See How They Ran: FDR and His Opponents.” The installation was designed by Daniel Culkin of the Roosevelt House Media staff. Generous assistance was provided by the operations staff of Roosevelt House and Hunter College, Gregory Nolan, and colleagues from the loan institutions.
