“The Lighter Side Of Collecting!” New Book Features 200 Of John Stinger’s New Yorker-Style Cartoons FRIDAY JUNE 17, 2016 • VOL. 47, NO. 25

“Grandmas Moses: American Modern” To Be On View At Shelburne Museum Exhibition Will Offer New Look At The American Legend

“The Lighter Side of Collecting!” is a new book by professional cartoonist and seasoned collector John Stinger. Published and distributed by Tanner Publishing, the book features 200 of Stinger’s New Yorker-style cartoons and 60-plus pages of quirky humor about the joy of chasing vintage stuff for fun and (sometimes) profit. Stinger takes the reader on a laughing trip with more twists and turns than a Victorian settee. Designed to appeal to both young and experienced collectors, dealers, auctioneers, appraisers, flea marketers, show promoters, and pickers, the book is delightfully family-friendly, non-offensive and promises to entertain anyone who wheels and deals (or trades) in treasures and other magnificient possessions. From his New Jersey studio, Stinger’s cartoons can seen in leading publications serving the antiques and collectibles market. He sold his first cartoon about antiques in 1973 and in 1992 published his first book about collecting classics. His general line of

Photography by Andy Duback. “Grandma Moses: American Modern” will take a new look at this iconic artist through a modernist lens. Co-organized with Bennington Museum in Vermont, the exhibition showcases more than 60 paintings, works on paper, and related materials by Moses alongside work by other 19th- and 20th-century folk and modern artists. “Grandma Moses: American Modern” will be on view at Shelburne Museum in

Shelburne, Vt., from Saturday, June 18 through Thursday, Oct. 20. “Grandma Moses is best known for paintings of simple farm life and the rural countryside that established her reputation as a wildly popular latter-day folk artist,” said Shelburne Museum Director Thomas Denenberg. “This exhibition reexamines her work and explores the way she emerged onto the national stage both as a product of and foil to mid-century American modernism.” Grandma Moses: American Modern explores the work of the beloved self-taught American artist Anna Mary Robertson “Grandma” Moses (1860-1961), whose nostalgic

The Lititz Historical Foundation will present the popular Lititz Antiques Show at the Warwick Middle School in Lititz, Pa., on Friday and Saturday, June 24 and 25. Founded in 1964, the show is Lancaster County’s longest running antique show. The Warwick Middle School is located directly behind the high school at 104 Maple Street and has proven to be an excellent new venue for this

quality event. This show serves as a major fundraiser for the Lititz Historical Foundation benefiting its mission and upkeep of the historic 1792 residence of Moravian Johannes Mueller. Like other quality regional shows, such as the Antiques in the Valley show, the Elverson show, and the Kempton show, the Lititz show is a buying show where good material comes out. Promoted as an “old time country show” the roster of nearly 50 dealers price to sell and present a wide range of quality country material, including painted furniture, ceramics, textiles, holiday items, lighting, baskets, woodenware, tin, iron, and folk art. The show attracts dealers from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, and both New England and the South. One-third of the exhibiting dealers have done the show for at least a decade. dining and living still are important parts of life but the choice of decoration is more reproduction that original. Historically, there has been a significant absence of surviving early items from the south. Not because of the Civil War but arguably more due to the poverty in the region for much of the 19th and 20th centuries and the harsh humid climate. A more significant issue is that newer (and that includes 20th century reproduction) furniture fits modern living tastes. Knife boxes that hide decanters are great, but gutting a period knife box to fit it

In my antiquing jaunts of late, I have given a fair bit of thought to the future of hardwood formal furniture. This is what in the trade is called “brown furniture, to distinguish it from folksy painted furniture. Many readers recall how insane prices for brown furniture reached in the pre-2008 world and certainly in the 1990s. Six figures, maybe pushing to seven, seemed to be the new norm for nearly every level of Queen Anne or Chippendale furniture. We used to joke that every lawyer in Lancaster County had to have at least one tall case clock in his or her office next to an Eichholtz portrait, a Slaugh Empire table and a Heriz carpet. Brown furniture was the benchmark for the

catastrophic. Their treasures were not worth as much and so the belief that brown furniture (remember I said it was the benchmark of pricing) was as good an investment as anything was now proven wrong. So as we see the market for antiques recover and shops are filling up more and more, I have given a lot of thought to why brown furniture at nearly every price level still remains flat. Now I am sure that there are dealers who sell lots of brown furniture and would argue this point. My sense, however, is that the market has just not recovered at the same rate as other types of furniture. I think there are a couple of factors in play here. First, is that the lovers of brown furniture often were/are folks who see antiques as part of their investment strategy. Brown furniture no longer fits that. Second, is the regional bias of certain parts of the country. Here in the south, formal

market and prices never seemed to dwindle. Then the crash happened and the market reset itself at every level. As I have written before, the change to the market was two-fold. First, declining prices mirrored a declining interest in antiques and particularly brown furniture. The weekend buyer who might purchase a candle stand or pair of chairs had evaporated. While I think these folks will be back and arguably we are seeing this in the marketplace now - there was a bigger factor that affected the market. This was the painful mindset change where collectors realized that the axiom that “antiques never go down in value was just not true. In fact, many collections lost significant value. For some collectors, and I applaud these folks, they collect because they enjoy it and so did not let the decline in pricing become an obsession. For others - the prestige and investment collectors - this decline was

for the first time since their creation, offering visitors an unprecedented opportunity to take a glimpse over Rembrandt’s shoulder as he worked on this composition. Among the first to recognize the greatness of Rembrandt’s “Judas Returning the Thirty Pieces of Silver was the famous Dutch diplomat, poet, musician, and art connoisseur Constantijn Huygens. The manuscript of Huygens’ autobiography which contains his lyrical account of the painting will be lent by the Royal Library in The Hague and included in the exhibition. Also on view will be a number of early self-portraits that show the young Rembrandt at the time he painted the panel, and some two dozen etchings and drawings of scenes from the life of Christ that illustrate the development of the artist’s narrative style. The exhibition reunites the painting and the drawings

Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century “Father Knows Best: Celebrating Dad’s Day” By Donald-Brian Johnson At least once a year, Dad gets his due. That’s when Father’s Day rolls around. It’s our opportunity to celebrate all the great dads out there, but without “Mother’s Day,” our sires might still be in search of a celebration to call their own. The first Mother’s Day observance was held on May 10, 1908 at Andrew’s Methodist Church, Grafton, W. Va. In Fairmont, W. Va., just 15 miles from Grafton, Grace Golden Clayton was immediately inspired by the event. On July 5, 1908, Clayton organized a “Father’s Day” service at Williams Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church South. Hundreds of area fathers (including Clayton’s) had

perished in a December 1907 mining disaster. She’d suggested the event as a means of honoring these men, as well as all fathers. Clayton, however, was not a promoter. Following the 1908 “Father’s Day,” the idea of a holiday honoring the man of the house languished until 1910, when Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Wash., was similarly inspired. After hearing a Mother’s Day sermon, Dodd became convinced that Dad also needed a day. She suggested June 5th, her own An easy-going Father’s Day. And, the market for recipients is no longer limited to just dear old Dad. There are Father’s Day greetings tailormade for grandpas, hubbies, sons, sons-in-law, uncles, godfathers, and assorted other favorite fellas. Vintage Father’s Day cards are popular with today’s paper collectors, who are taken with their nostalgic, often humorous appeal. While

popular card imagery includes such old stalwarts as fishing rods, smoking paraphernalia, and hunting equipment, interesting embellishments often added to the visual appeal. A WWII-era card, featuring an illustration of a hand-carved model battleship, was accented with raised wooden letters, spelling out “Dad.” A take-iteasy Dad was pictured at rest in a hammock made of real net, while a card showing a typewriter (remember those?) with the heading “You’re the type for me, Dad,” came complete with a swatch of “real” typewriter ribbon (in black and red, just like at the office). There were cards with metallic paper “mirrors” so Dad could see who all the fuss was about. There were cards with glowing pipes, their embers courtesy of gold glitter - and more than a few cards depicting what Dad might rather be opening on his day off - a ready-to-bedrained cocktail shaker. Previously Unrecorded Painting By Louis Remy Mignot Soars At Shannon’s A previously unrecorded oil-on-canvas painting by the renowned American artist Louis Remy Mignot (N.Y./S.C., 1831-70) titled “Tropical Scene,” soared to $120,000 at an auction held April 28 by Shannon’s Fine Art Auctioneers, in the firm’s gallery located at 354 Woodmont Road in Milford, Conn. It was the top lot in a sale that grossed $2 million. All prices quoted include the buyer’s premium. The painting, depicting figures traversing a Luminist tropical landscape, came out of a private collection in Switzerland. Measuring 24-by-39

inches, it was monogrammed and dated (1864) lower right. Mignot, a native of Charleston, S.C., began his career in New York City. He became associated with the artists of the Hudson River School, particularly Frederic Edwin Church, who would become his friend and mentor. In 1857, Mignot and Church traveled and painted across the tropical wilderness of Ecuador. The auction featured 275 artworks (77 percent of which sold). “It was a solid sale, with overall strong demand at all price ranges,” said Gene Shannon of Shannon’s Fine Art

Auctioneers. In addition to live bidding in the room, Internet bidding was provided by Invaluable.com. There were two “catalogs within a catalog.” One was a collection of 44 scenes of New York from the early 20th century to the present. The artists included such notables as Guy Carleton Wiggins (1883-1962), Paul Cornoyer (1864-1923), Lee Lash (1864-1935), Edmund Greacen (1876-1949), Johann Berthelsen (1883-1972), and Reginald Marsh (1898-1954). Leading the group was a

winter Manhattan scene from Wiggins, titled “Fifth Avenue,” which sold for $84,000. The painting by Paul Cornoyer, also a winter depiction of lower Manhattan, titled “Washington Square in Winter,” realized $72,000. The other “catalog within a catalog” was a collection of seven newly discovered paintings by the Provincetown plein-air Impressionist artist Charles Webster Hawthorne (1872-1930). The group was led by a large unfinished beach scene that sailed past its

$2,000 high estimate to hit $66,000. The group sold for a combined $141,600. The paintings descended in the same family since 1957. Western bronzes were highlighted by Cyrus Edwin Dallin’s (Am., 1861-1944) “Appeal to the Great Spirit,” a

21.5-inch model cast after the famous monumental sculpture in front of the MFA in Boston ($84,000); and a cowboy on a bucking bronco after Charles M. Russell (Am., 1864-1926), titled “A Bronc Twister,” 18 inches tall ($20,400). Continued on page 16

Historic Barnum & Bailey Circus Relic Headlines Heritage Americana Auction The 1903 “Two Hemispheres” Bandwagon Sells For $250,000 Reaching 28 feet in length and weighing 13,000 pounds, Barnum & Bailey’s “Two Hemispheres” circus wagon once required a team of 40 horses when it debuted in the grand parade welcoming the “Greatest Show on Earth” home from a triumphant five year world tour. On May 14, it took a winning bid of $250,000 for the famed relic to find a new home after it crossed the block in Heritage Auctions’ spring Americana and Political Auction in Dallas, Texas. “This was simply the biggest, grandest, and most famous of all circus wagons,” said Tom Slater, Director of Americana Auctions at Heritage. “It is only fitting that its selling price far eclipsed what any other circus wagon has ever fetched at auction.” The wagon is lavishly decorated with relief carving from the workshop of famed carver Samuel Robb, best known as one of the premier makers of 19th century cigar store Indians.

“The buyer prefers to remain anonymous until he formally announces his plans for the “Two Hemispheres,” said Slater, “but we can disclose that he flew to Dallas from his home in Canada just to bid on the bandwagon, and went home a very happy collector.” Other noteworthy results include $12,500 for an example of James Montgomery Flagg’s immortal Uncle Sam “I Want You” WWI recruitment poster; $11,250 for a small swatch of fabric from the Wright Brothers’ plane which made the first manned flight at Kitty Hawk, N.C., and $56,250 for a Tiffany silver cigarette box with the presidential seal owned by John F. Kennedy. “Personally owned JFK items always draw considerable interest,” said Slater. “However, in this case the unexpectedly high selling price was probably inspired by the excellent documentation, which established that

the box had been used in the Oval Office while Kennedy was president. It was among the items discreetly removed from the office after the president was assassinated.” Items belonging to a

Political campaign items, always a staple of Heritage Americana auctions, were well represented. Among the more intriguing lots was an 1840 William Henry Harrison campaign bandanna, bearing the

Republican president drew similar interest, as a group of nine gold objects belonging to Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower, including a gold cigarette case honoring “Ike” on V-E Day (May 7, 1945, when the War in Europe ended) brought a combined total of $50,375.

one of the most famous American political campaign slogans, “Tippecanoe and Tyler Too,” which sold for $15,000. Harrison had first come to national prominence after his 1811 victory over Tecumseh at the Battle of Tippecanoe, and his political nickname was “Old

Tippecanoe.” John Tyler succeeded Harrison as president after his untimely death just a month after his inauguration. “To our knowledge this bandanna, believed to be the only known example, is the only 1840 campaign textile which carried that immortal slogan,” said Slater. “It was in fact the title of a wildly popular campaign song which was copyrighted, and this may have accounted for its limited use on other campaign items,” noted Slater. Among the most unique items in the auction was a well-preserved early 19th-century cotton gin, which sold for $8,125. Eli Whitney’s invention revolutionized cotton harvesting and transformed the South’s economy in a matter of decades. Tens of thousands were in use in the years leading up to the Civil War, yet only a tiny handful of these historic machines have

survived intact. A lock of Thomas Jefferson’s hair - snipped by his personal physician at the time of his death on July 4, 1826 - made history at the sale when it became the first time a lock of hair from the third U.S. President of the United States was ever offered at public auction. The 14 strands of hair sold for $6,875 - roughly $491 per strand. A pair of oil paintings by Dwight D. Eisenhower (accompanied by a book collecting the president’s paintings) realized $13,750, against a $6,000 pre-auction estimate. A real photo jugate of the first President of the State of Israel, Chaim Weizmann, and U.S. President Harry Truman realized $11,250, and a brass-rimmed wall plaque depicting John Quincy Adams sold for $10,000.
