Hartzell’s Auction Gallery Inc. To Offer Estate Of Jack Savitsky And Mary Lou & Jack Savitt On Saturday, June 28th O

n Saturday, June 28, at 10 a.m., Hartzell’s Auction Gallery Inc. will offer the estates of folk artist Jack Savitsky and of Camelot Gallery owners Mary Lou and Jack Savitt of Macungie, Pa. John “Jack” Savitsky (19101991) of Lansford, Pa., was a coal miner and later in life became a well-recognized artist. Jack Savitt was the son of Jack Savitsky and he exhibited his father’s works exclusively at Camelot Gallery. The auction will be held on-site at the 1730s Georgian style farmhouse and stone barn, which was the home and gallery of the Savit’s. Macungie is in Lehigh County and a suburb of Allentown. This outstanding auction will include a large selection of quality paintings, drawings, sculptures, rugs, furniture, clocks, sterling silver, jewelry, textiles, country smalls and folk art. Many original Savitsky paintings will be offered without reserve including a rare pair of early works from the 1920s depicting hunting scenes titled “The Hunter” and “Hunting the Wood Duck.” Another unusual painting titled “Three Musketeers” showing Savitsky, Sterling Strauser, and Justin McCarthy will also be sold. Over 20 additional Savitsky

works, ranging from oil and acrylics to colored pencil, crayon and pen drawings will be offered. Subjects include coal miners, Adam and Eve, George Washington, Uncle Sam, clowns, children, landscapes, trains, trolleys and more. Many paintings will be offered by various other artists as well. An important work by J u s t i n McCarthy illustrating G e o rg e Washington crossing the Delaware and several pieces by Sterling Strauser, Dorothy Strauser, and Robert Rasely are also included. There are six bronze sculptures and a wooden totem created by Klaus Ihlenfeld in the 1960s, along with G e o r g e Nakashima, and several chairs by Harry Bertoia and three Bertoia monographs in the sale. An interesting tabletop sonambient sculpture attributed to Val Bertoia will also be offered to the highest bidder. Other highlights include a copper molded eagle flag pole topper from

the Booton, N.J., courthouse; an American grandfather clock; an array of sterling silver; and much more. Selling will begin at 10:00 a.m. with quality lots of antiques, household, jewelry, collectibles and primitives. The 4.35 acres of real estate with house and barn will be offered at noon, followed by the catalogued portion of the sale of artwork and antiques that begins

promptly at 1:00 p.m. Internet bidding will be facilitated by LiveAuctioneers.com. Bidders who wish to participate online are encouraged to register 24 hours prior to the auction. Prehistoric Ross Blade In Morphy’s May 17 Auction Looked Sharp As It Commanded A Top Bid Of $276,000 inclusive of 20 percent buyer’s premium). The top 10 lots were led by the exceptional Ross Blade, an exotic flint specimen from the Woodland period, Hopewell phase (2,0001,500 B.P.). Crafted to a very high standard, the translucent sunset orange blade, measuring 8 1/8 inches, would have been reserved for only the

elite of Hopewellian society, said Morphy’s Prehistoric Americana expert John Mark Clark. “The Ross Blade is likely the most beautiful, and largest, known example of its type in private hands,” said Clark. “Legend has it that this blade traveled from the Midwest, probably southern Illinois, all the way to Utah, where it was found during the restoration of an antique truck. The blade had been wrapped in a shirt and stashed inside a door panel. It made its way back to the

Midwest, where it ended up being one of few things that survived a massive house fire. That’s why the blade is known to collectors as ‘The Survivor.’” At Morphy’s auction, the Ross Blade reached the upper end of its estimate range, selling for $276,000. Two other blades achieved top 10 status. A translucent sugar quartz Clovis point from the Early Paleolithic Period (11,50010,000 B.P.) was discovered near Buckhart Township in Fulton County, Ill. Its distinctive white tip was part of the craftsman’s design plan, Clark said, and because it is so unusual, it was chosen for

Against a $45,000-$60,000 estimate, the point realized $69,000. Not far behind was a corner notch blade of Missouri origin from the Archaic Period (7,500-4,000 B.P.). furious that we had not done our objective. He felt that the reserve was fine, as he had to protect his work from being undersold. The irony was in the secondary auction market; his works consistently bring a quarter of what he prices it for in the gallery world. That is another story but does go back to the validating nature of an auction in establishing the true market value on a piece at a given time. All of us face the choice/opportunity to sell things at auction in our collecting lives. I would counsel you to step back and objectively look at what you are consigning. If the pieces are not great and you expect world records, then you are bound to be disappointed. And if you are disappointed,

would like to have “great pieces and so we look to constantly upgrade. The issue is that one good piece will not equal in value a great piece. Life, and the antiques world, just does not work that way. Similarly, one of the alltoo-often scenarios we face with our benefit auctions is having a consigner ask for a reserve price. This is the bane of my existence, as reserves, particularly in a charity auction, are usually fatal. First is that all too often the buyer sets a reserve that is unrealistic. Two years ago, before I came to the museum, they accepted a painting with a suggested retail price of $14,000 and a reserve of $12,000. That was totally unrealistic and of course the piece did not sell. The consigner, a local artist, was

Putting together the sale is tough, however, because all too often the consigners, both artists and collectors, fall into the biggest trap in the auction world. It goes something like this: “So I want to consign something to sale and make some money. Well, I am going to put in some of these lesser things in my collection because I don’t want to give them anything good in case it sells for less than it is worth. This will be a test to see how well they do. If they can sell these lesser items for a great price, then I might consider putting in something really good! As a result, they will consign a lesser or damaged piece, and more often than not, the result is that it sells for very little. They are furious and vow never to consign anything again or certainly not to that auctioneer. It often is a comment like this: “That *(&*%$# auctioneer, he does not know what he is doing! I am never consigning again as I lost money on it, and it is the auctioneer’s fault. And thus it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. All of us who are collectors have great pieces, good pieces and stuff that haunts us. We all

Kelly said the Bureau has confirmed sightings, from sources the Bureau deems credible, of the Gardner artwork in the years after it was stolen. He also identified three persons of interest in the Gardner case, all with ties to organized crime: Carmello Merlino, Robert Guarente, and Robert Gentile. Kelly said in the late 1990s, two FBI informants told the Bureau that Merlino was preparing to return Rembrandt’s “Storm on the Sea of Galilee,” in an effort to collect the reward. However, Merlino and his crew were soon arrested in an aborted armored car heist and the painting was never returned. Kelly believes Guarente somehow passed control of the stolen Gardner artwork to Gentile, a Manchester, Conn., man. Kelly believes Gentile has ties to organized crime in Philadelphia, and that Gentile helped bring

some or all of the stolen Gardner artwork to Philadelphia. In 2012, Gentile’s home and property in Manchester, Conn., were extensively searched but no sign of the stolen Gardner artwork was located. However, Kelly said authorities recovered police paraphernalia, including clothing, articles of clothing with police and FBI insignias on it, handcuffs, a scanner, two way radios, and Tasers, and these are not common items. Gentile, through his lawyer, denied having any connection to the Gardner art heist or with moving the artwork after the fact. “I think in this case we’re going to get these paintings back,” Kelly said. “Even though these paintings are worth $500 million, really they’re worthless because there’s no market for (them). You’d never find a buyer.” Both Merlino and Guarente have since died.

The museum is located in the Fenway-Kenmore neighborhood or Back Bay section of Boston. The story of the Gardner heist remains the city’s last great unsolved crime. There is a $5 million reward on the table, as well as an offer of immunity from the U.S. Attorney. In his first TV interview, FBI Special Agent Geoff Kelly, the Bureau’s leading investigator on the Gardner Case, told FOX 25’s Bob Ward the trail for the missing Gardner artwork has not grown cold.

As reported by MyFoxBoston.com’s Bob Ward and Cristina Corbin, along with The Associated Press, the FBI has reported credible sightings of stolen artwork from the famous Gardner museum heist. It was 24 years ago that two men disguised as law enforcement officers talked their way into the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston, Mass., subdued the museum’s security guards, disabled the security system, and stole 13 irreplaceable works of art. They claimed to be responding to a report of a disturbance. The paintings were cut out of their frames. The recently published “Start With a House, Finish With a Collection by Leslie Anne Miller is the story of how one couple’s use of American art and antiques evolved from furnishing a house into a fullblown passion for collecting. Featuring exquisite examples of Hollingsworth and Morris family furniture, Chinese Export porcelain, Pennsylvania clocks and Kirk-Stieff silver, as well as American paintings by the Peale family, Edward Hicks, Edward Redfield and Horace Pippin, this museumcalibre collection reveals a pride in the hunt for great art and antiques. A range of early formal Philadelphia furniture, along with Pennsylvania German paint-decorated chests, reflect the combination of urban and backcountry decorative arts in the collection. The combination of text and extraordinary photographs traces this remarkable journey of collecting and demonstrates that the couple’s life is comfortable living among these various collections. The compendium catalogues the diversified and important collection, making this a valuable scholarly reference as well as a reading pleasure. The book is dedicated to antiques dealer and interior designor Harry Hartman. The origins of this book began with an article written for the

The Blue And White Kitchen Locati’s May Sale Shows Healthy Special Display And Sale During The Month Of June At The Grist Mill Antiques Center This month, Grist Mill Antiques Center in Pemberton, N.J., is showcasing everything shopgoers need for a blue and white kitchen. From Hall Rose Parade serving pieces to charming Pyrex mixing bowls to creamy blue milk glass salt & pepper shakers, shoppers can find all types of blue kitchenware in the special display and throughout the store. Blue and white is a classic design trend that always seems fresh even though it’s been around in different iterations for decades. Whether one’s taste leans toward traditional Dutch designs, stylish French Country, the bold lines and saturated colors (think cobalt blue) of Art Deco, or even the Mexican/Southwestern style which draws on shades of robin’s egg blue and turquoise - blue and white kitchens will never go out of fashion. The Grist Mill Antiques Center is open seven days a

large sale on Memorial Day, and a grouping of Frank Feathers carvings were among the highlights. Little is known of the late folk carver Frank Feathers. Commonly published dates for the itinerant immigrant are that he lived from 1877 to 1951. He roamed slightly north and south of the Mason-Dixon line, generally from around Hagerstown and Thurmont, Md., to Greencastle and Mercersburg, Pa. Raised lettering and the use of acorns as a motif on his canes was a trademark style of the carver. He made canes, wall boxes, and decorative spoons. He did not paint his work, and he worked with iron files. Today, his work is recognized as regional folk art and often comes up for sale from local estates at Gateway Gallery Auction. printing technology, scammers can reproduce a high number of less expensive labels and end up making a profit through sheer volume. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are people in the business of selling legitimate reproductions of old fruit crate labels, having navigated the legal copyright requirements and received whatever permission is necessary from companies still in existence. It’s easy to see how collectors can get hooked on fruit crate labels, they’re artistic, colorful, and can have scenic images of orchards, fruits, and wildlife. Some even offer a little “cheesecake” to attract buyers, especially those made in the 1940s. It’s also interesting to see how they have changed throughout the years, reflecting both advertising styles and popular artistic tastes of each period. Fruit crate labels are also an attractive collectible because they’re easy to store and don’t take up much room. And if you’re collecting on a budget, you can still get beautiful examples for just a few dollars. That doesn’t mean there aren’t some valuable labels: some scarcer examples can sell for well over a thousand dollars. In many other collecting categories, fraudsters don’t bother reproducing or faking less expensive pieces because it’s not worth their time. However, with modern

cache of old unused labels are discovered in a warehouse; this has happened, but it’s rare and usually publicized. Fruit crate labels came into being around the mid1880s and continued to be used strongly into the 1950s. After that time, companies began identifying their products by printing crate contents and brand information directly on the crates. Of course, some companies continued to print labels after that time too, while others kept using old leftover label inventories that had been printed in huge batches. Throughout so many decades of crate label use, printing methods changed, creating differences in the look of the labels. And that’s one of the keys to differentiating between a reproduction and an authentic vintage label. If you know the time period of the label you’re interested in, and especially once you see authentic labels from that time period, you’ll be able to spot the difference between a reproduction and the real thing. Here are some general guidelines as to what labels printed during different time periods should look like; if a label you see appears different from these, exercise caution, especially if it’s an expensive, hard-to-find label. Early Labels From the mid-1880s through the very early 20th century, labels were printed on metal plates and had a somewhat shiny, almost varnished look that helped strengthen the colors. Unless the label has spent a lot of time exposed to the sun and the colors have faded, the original colors should be bold and strong, created by hand stippling or, around the turn of the century, mechanical stippling using patterned celluloid sheets. The paper is thicker than more modern examples and will most likely be brittle. There will be some signs of age and the back will probably be discolored. Mechanical Printing Once mechanical printing started taking hold somewhere around the 1910s, it became more and more common. As the years went by, more labels were photo mechanically printed. Since the paper used was thinner, occasionally there may be some bleed-through of the ink onto the back of the label or some color from a wet label that was stacked underneath. The varnish is also thinner and there may be some discoloration from age. Labels printed from mid-century on are usually pretty inexpensive and can be harder to distinguish from reproductions. Since labels were printed by both large and small printing companies all across the country, there can be some differences in the type of printing methods used. Not all companies upgraded to photo mechanical printing at the same time, so there can be overlap. A good reference source can help you determine the specifics of a particular label. Besides checking the colors, varnish, paper thickness and printing techniques, another defense against reproductions is to know the correct measurements of the original label. While some reproductions are the same size as originals, others are smaller, so that would be a sure giveaway. Finally, there have been a good number of reproduction World War II-era fruit and

vegetable crate labels, including Victrypac cherry crate labels. World War II-era fruit and vegetable can labels have also been reproduced. These cross-collectibles attract buyers in two fields of collecting: label collectors and collectors of World War II

advises that buyers read sellers’ descriptions carefully and fully. Some sellers identify reproductions as “art prints,” “crate label art,” or in other similarly confusing terms. Sometimes at the very bottom of a listing, and occasionally in smaller print, you may see an indication that the item is a

copy or reproduction. Buyers who scan the listing for general information and focus more on the label image can miss this all-important information. It’s also important to ask the seller if the photo is the actual item you’ll receive or if it’s a stock photo of another authentic label. All photos courtesy of Dwayne Rogers (www.thelabelman.com).
