A remake of Lancaster, Pa., network WGAL’s 1923 broadcasting station stood out among the equipment offered. Rivertowne Celebrates 13 Years In Columbia, Pa. It’s time to put up the balloons and hang the banner, as the Rivertowne Antique Center is celebrating its 13th birthday with a big anniversary sale on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, June 23, 24, and 25. The center is located along the banks of the Susquehanna River in historic Columbia, Pa. Co-owner Ron Madar said, “During our special weekend, we’ll be giving our customers great discounts of up to 40 percent on items throughout the store.” Since opening in 2004, Rivertowne has gained the reputation for offering top-quality antiques set in the restored BachmanForry tobacco warehouse. It is home to 20 dealers displaying a vast selection of authentic 18th-, 19th-, and early-20th-century items including folk art, country furniture, Americana, primitives, glassware, stoneware, trade signs, general store items, and decorative smalls. “One of the reasons we’ve had success with our shop is that we haven’t outgrown ourselves. Many places get larger and can become impersonal,” said co-owner Georgia Townsend. “At

Rivertowne, we greet every customer with a smile and a welcome. It always gets a pleasant response; people love shopping here.” Relax in a comfortable, clean and well-lit atmosphere, and enjoy exploring the two floors stocked with treasures galore. There’s no better time to visit than during the threeday anniversary sale. “We’re celebrating our 13th year in business thanks to our great group of dealers, their commitment to offer

Over 100,000 Past Auction Records Will Be Searchable

genuine antiques fairly priced and the support of a customer base that appreciates our merchandise,” continued Madar. “What we’ve seen lately is the younger generation coming in recognizing the utilitarian value of antiques for use in furnishing and decorating their home. That is very encouraging.” Light refreshments will be served at the center’s café, which features the transplanted original 1930s counter and stools from the Sun restaurant in downtown Lancaster, Pa. The Rivertowne Antique Center is conveniently located off Route 30. From the Columbia/Marietta exit, use the new Front Street/River Road downtown bypass or follow Third Street into town, turn right on Locust Street, go a block and a half, and turn left on Bank Avenue. The address is 125 Bank Ave., Columbia. There is free parking, Visa and MasterCard are accepted, and gift certificates, layaway, and shipping are available. For further information, call 717-684-8514 or visit www.Facebook.com/ RivertowneAntiques.

Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates of Mt. Crawford, Va., is pleased to announce the launch of their new website at www.jeffreysevans.com. The site features over 100,000 searchable past auction sales records from 2004 to present, each with a full description and photos. Evans and his staff are widely recognized for their expertise in Southern furniture, decorative art, and folk art, as well as early American glass and lighting. The firm’s new site represents the internet’s largest resource for evaluating and researching Shenandoah Valley of Virginia decorative arts and early American glass and lighting. There are no fees or registration required to access the information. The firm has also

retained the same easy-touse absentee bidding platform while incorporating new features, including the ability to securely pay invoices online. “We have been building this new site over the past three years. Many of our early sales records and photos were saved in different formats, so making everything consistent and searchable was a challenge,” said Evans.

How Pure Is Sterling Silver? “What’s It Worth” Antiques Minute By Mike Ivankovich If you have a sterling silver necklace weighing one troy ounce, how much “pure silver” do you really have? Because silver is a soft and malleable metal, it must be mixed with another base metal, such as copper or tin, to make it hard enough to endure day-to-day wear. Sterling silver

must be 92.5 percent pure silver and 7.5 percent base metal, no more and no less than 92.5 percent. Usually it will be marked “Sterling.” Sometimes it may be marked “925” or “925/1000.” So, your onetroy-ounce sterling silver necklace would contain approximately .925 ounce of pure silver. What’s it worth? If the spot price of silver is $18 per troy ounce, this sterling silver

track the value of each and every minifigure produced, and today’s children collect them just like the baseball cards, Pogs, or Beanie Babies of my day. Even mass-produced fakes and fantasy pieces exist and are readily available on sites like eBay and Amazon. Lego products, especially licensed themes in particular, have been engulfed in a speculative bubble for several years now. The secondary market is finally starting to show signs of weakening due to a glut of new product constantly being released to retailers on an ongoing basis. Even the coveted Lego “Star Wars” sets have regularly been placed on clearance by big box retailers like Walmart and Target, which are so desperate to make room for all the newest sets that the Lego Group continues to release several times a year. I have written about the Lego secondary market in previous articles. That being said, the infamous Lego minifigure continues to dominate the hearts and minds of collectors alike. But, with high-quality fakes being released and manufactured in China, how long can the craze last? There are now literally thousands of different Lego minifigures just from the Lego “Star Wars” line alone. A lot of these minifigures are updated versions of popular characters like Boba

S972335

The Lego Group scored a massive lucrative licensing deal in 1999, when the company was granted the rights to produce toy building sets based on everyone’s favorite galaxy far, far away. The first Lego sets to premiere that featured the coveted Lego “Star Wars” insignia were extremely crude by today’s standards, but each set contained miniature “Lego-size” figurines (called minifigures) of some of the most beloved characters from the “Star Wars” universe. Due to licensing agreements already in place with toy maker Hasbro, the Lego Group was contractually prevented from selling Lego “Star Wars” minifigures separately. As a result, collectors who just wanted to start a collection of minifigures from the highly prized Lego “Star Wars” line were forced to either buy each and every set they came in or turn to the secondary market and pay an inflated price to acquire their beloved plastic treasures. Ironically, it was the popularity of the Lego minifigures based on the “Star Wars” universe that helped catapult the Lego “Star Wars” franchise to unrivaled success that is still going strong today. Best of all, the Lego minifigure in its current form was actually conceived in the 1970s as a way to bring basic Lego sets, then based on either generic city or space themes, to life. Today, Lego enthusiasts covet Lego minifigures more than the actual building sets

they are packaged in. It was this discovery from the Lego “Star Wars” franchise that caused Lego to explore a plethora of other pop culture licensing themes. Also, today, Lego minifigures are being produced from some of the most popular (and obscure) properties to ever grace pop culture. There are Marvel and DC comic superhero minifigures, a line of Lego Batman minifigures, Scooby-Doo minifigures along with sets to match, “Lord of the Rings” minifigures, “Dr. Who” minifigures, and even minifigures based on the popular animated series “The Simpsons”! Most of these minigifures can only be purchased in complete building sets, but there are exceptions. In 2010, Lego decided to release an original and exclusive series of 16 assorted minifigures that came blind packaged in sealed poly bags. This started a series of collectible minifigures that grace retailers’ shelves and retail for $3.99 each. The series is still going strong and is currently on series 16. If you happen to own the first series brand new and factory sealed, a complete sealed set of 16 minifigures has been recorded as being sold for more than $400 on eBay. Both toy enthusiasts and Lego collectors cannot get enough of the infamous Lego minifigure. There are secondary websites that

Georg Jensen And Danish Silver By Anita Stratos Clean, simple elegance those words have defined the timeless style of Georg Jensen jewelry, flatware and holloware throughout the history of the company. Jensen developed and finely honed his skills and style during his apprenticeship for a goldsmith beginning in 1880. He then opened his first silver shop in Copenhagen in 1904, where his focus was on creating “democratic design” - items of functional beauty that were available to everyone. These designs enhanced and breathed a new energy into the thencontemporary Art Nouveau styles and lines of the times. Fast-forward over a hundred years to today, and those century-old designs continue to be coveted. Although new Georg Jensen wares reflect current styles, they remain true to their maker’s original concepts, incorporating them into the distinctive Jensen style. Jensen pieces of all types and ages are sought after, collectible and retain high values sometimes commanding prices even higher than similar Tiffany items. Because other Danish pieces can closely resemble Jensen with their clean, simple lines, some sellers attribute them to Jensen and ask high prices; some of these sellers are making innocent mistakes in identification, while others deliberately deceive buyers. Either way, you need to know what to look for to identify true Georg Jensen pieces. Virtually all pieces made by Jensen have a maker’s mark; in fact, some collectors say that if there’s no Jensen mark, it’s not an authentic Georg Jensen piece. Like many other manufacturers, the mark changed throughout the years. There is no gap in Jensen marks between 1904 and the present day, but there are

some overlaps, when two or more mark styles were used in the same years. Marks range from a stylized “GJ” to “Georg Jensen Copenhagen” to marks with a crown logo or dotted circle. Check reputable reference sources to make sure any mark you see is authentic. Jensen set the tone and high quality standards for his works but allowed his carefully chosen designers the freedom to express their own

design ideas. On some pieces, you’ll find the artist’s mark alongside the Jensen mark, including those of Johan Rhode, Just Andersen, Gundolph Albertus, Harald Nielsen and Henning Koppel, among others. Other marks indicate date, model number, manufactory and silver content along with guardian, duty

or import stamps, which have also been used on some pieces. The types of marks used sometimes depended on the space constraints of the piece. It’s easy to question whether a piece of Danish jewelry without any maker’s mark is actually Georg Jensen, but can every piece with an authentic Jensen mark be trusted unquestioningly? The answer is, unfortunately, no. There are amalgamations and altered Jensen pieces that the

and into that brand-new addition to the American household: the at-home bar. “Entertaining with a splash” took on an entirely new meaning. For bartending beginners, there were bar guides by the bushelful. With the Happy Hour Mixology/Astrology Guide, readers not only learned how to “star at mixing great drinks” but also gained “enough savvy to be a sharp conversationalist when Happy Hour talk turns to the fascinating subject of Astrology!” (Did you know an “Old-Fashioned” is a “lucky libation for Libras?” Now there’s an ice-breaker!) Playboy magazine teamed up with Southern Comfort for the 1964 Barmate guide. Drinks should be cold. And ice should be fresh.” And, Barmate offered a definitive last word on that age-old question: which drinks should be “shaken,” and which ones “stirred?” Said Barmate, “Stir drinks made with clear liquors; shake drinks made with hard-to-blend ingredients...and shake hard!”

Brandywine River Museum Of Art Explores World War I Influence On Artists In New Lecture Series History and art collide in a new lecture series at the Brandywine River Museum of Art that will explore the impact of World War I on regional artists, especially the works of N.C. and Andrew Wyeth. Coinciding with the museum’s centennial celebrations surrounding Andrew Wyeth’s birth in 1917 and the “Andrew Wyeth: In Retrospect” exhibition opening on Saturday, June 24, the lecture series also marks 100 years since America entered the Great War. Titled “Brandywine Artists and WWI,” the series will run at the museum on Wednesday, July 19, and Wednesday, Sept. 13. Attendees will discover how WWI influenced the work and lives of artists from this region throughout the series,

presented by Christine B. Podmaniczky, curator of N.C. Wyeth Collections and Historic Properties. Each lecture will highlight the work of different regional artists impacted by the war, from exploring N.C. Wyeth’s body of war-themed work, to a lecture on Andrew Wyeth’s fascination with WWI and the enduring effect his imaginative childhood “war memory” had on his career. Lecture topics will include the following: On July 19, at 11 a.m., “On the Home Front: N. C. Wyeth and World War I” will be presented. N.C. Wyeth contributed to the war effort from his studio in Chadds Ford. This lecture surveys the body of his warthemed work and particularly

examines how he kept his images vital and relevant without firsthand experience. On Sept. 13, at 11 a.m., “Andrew Wyeth’s Great War” will be presented. As a boy in the mid-1920s, Andrew Wyeth was fascinated with WWI. This lecture considers how, through the props and imagery he found in his father’s studio and his collection of military soldiers, Wyeth created his own “war memory” that would nourish aspects of his art throughout his career. Lectures will take place in the lecture room at the Brandywine River Museum of Art, located on Route 1 in Chadds Ford, Pa. Before there were photographs, people in the late 18th-century to the middle 19th-century who wanted images of themselves and their family members commissioned portraits from a broad range of artists, many of whom had little or no academic training. Today, we characterize these types of paintings that fall outside of academic tradition as folk portraiture. These often naive depictions of individuals, children, families and couples are beloved for their charming characterizations. The worldclass assemblage of these portrayals in the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum (AARFAM), one of the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, is among the most popular with visitors. The museum celebrates its diamond anniversary in 2017 with “We the People: American Folk Portraits,” a long-term exhibition of more than 30 portraits. The show will highlight new accessions on view for the first time as well as constant favorites. “Colonial Williamsburg is blessed with one of the nation’s finest and most geographically diverse collections of American folk portraits. With their deeply human qualities, they are in many ways the heart of the Foundation’s folk art collection. It is highly fitting that they be featured in this special anniversary year,” said Ronald L. Hurst, the institution’s Carlisle H. Humelsine chief curator and vice president for collections, conservation, and museums. Several portraits recently acquired by the AARFAM will be shown in “We the People.” Among them is an oil-on-canvas portrait of Daniel Clarke by Jacob Frymire, an itinerant

While the young gentleman depicted has long been identified as Daniel Clarke, his name could refer to several men of the same name and appropriate age who lived in the region where Frymire worked. The well-dressed man, the red drapery behind him and the substantial brick building in the background suggest that either the subject was wealthy or the setting may have been aspirational. A portrait of the Jennison family by Jefferson Gauntt (1805-64) is another recently acquired painting to be shown. Gauntt depicts the close connections between the siblings in this strikingly unified composition. Each of the eight children born to the prosperous merchant William

Such is the case with “Two Children,” an unusual American portrait painted circa 1810. It is remarkable in several aspects, including the placement of the two subjects within the painting’s overall design, which focuses on the children even as the darkened room, open door and temporarilyplaced bench or chair in the background creates an air of The “Portrait of Emily Sheldon Bullard mystery around them. Original Norman Rockwell Painting Sells For $109,250 At Cottone’s Auction

This free form conoid bench by master woodworker George Nakashima, purchased directly from the artist in 1973 and with the original artist sketch, sold for $49,450. sculptures that today are located around the world as public works of art. His forms are often abstractions of the human body, typically depicting mother-and-child or reclining figures. Many are suggestive of the female body. The maquette was one of many fine items up for bid that came from the Seymour H. Knox collection in Buffalo. The collection co-headlined the auction along with items from the Strong Museum in Rochester, the Rochester Museum and Science Center

and the Everson Museum in Syracuse (all in New York). Also sold was a major collection from Westbury, N.Y. Seymour H. Knox Jr. (18981990) was known as “the dean of American art patrons.” After graduating from Yale in 1920, he directed several prominent corporations, including Marine Midland Bank, the F.W. Woolworth Company, the New York Central Railroad and the American Steamship Company, all while dedicating himself to the acquisition of fine art.

Shortly after being elected president of the Buffalo Fine Arts Academy Board in 1938, Knox and other members of his family provided inaugural donations for the “Room of Contemporary Art” at what is now the Albright-Knox Museum. This resulted in the acquisition of masterworks by Henry Moore, Cezanne, Leger, Matisse, Joan Miro, Modigliani, Picasso, and Chaim Soutine. Knox helped facilitate the museum’s acquisition of “Draped Reclining Figure,” which Moore executed from 1935-36. It was the first work by
