Unique “Thunderbird” Jewelry From The Santo Domingo Pueblo To Be On View At The Art Museums Of Colonial Williamsburg erhaps the most underappreciated form of artistinspired Native American jewelry and a true traditional form of folk art, thunderbird jewelry, as the makers referred to it (due to the predominant motif found on necklace pendants) was created by Native Americans at the Santo Domingo Pueblo in New Mexico during the Depression years. On Saturday, June 27, these distinctive, handmade necklaces, earrings, bolo ties, hair clips and more will be the subject of an exhibition to open at the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum, one of the art museums of Colonial Williamsburg. “Thunderbirds: Jewelry of the Santo Domingo Pueblo” will feature more than 100 pieces as well as early period photography and tools and materials used by Santo Domingo artists. J. Roderick Moore, codirector of the Blue Ridge Institute at Ferrum College in Ferrum, Va., and Sally Moore are the guest curators of the exhibition. “When mentioning American folk art, images of weathervanes, quilts, and charming portraits of children might first come to mind, but there is much more to consider,” said Jan Gilliam, manager, exhibit planning and associate curator of toys for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. “This exhibition stretches those traditional boundaries and explores a type of art and a group of people not previously represented at the museum. It is exciting to be able to present this story of a small group of people who adapted their traditions to accommodate their changing circumstances. The colors, forms and materials of the jewelry are as appealing today as they were when the objects were made. But beyond the beauty of the pieces are the fascinating personal histories of the makers. It is folk art well worth exploring,” said Gilliam. The people of the Santo Domingo Pueblo have the longest Native American jewelry making tradition; they still make their jewelry using the traditional methods and many of the same materials that were used by their ancestors. This group of

industry, the work traditiona l l y involved the entire family in the process from creation to sales. As early as the late 19th century, the Santo Domingo people made jewelry directed toward tourists seeking “Indian” souvenirs. They already had a long history of making jewelry for the Native American markets. They are best known for making handmade “heishi” necklaces of shell or turquoise that A Santo Domingo Pueblo were popular earring (one of a pair), with other maker unknown, from tribes; “jaclas” Santo Domingo, N.M., earrings made second quarter of the with short 20th century and made or of automobile battery loops t u r q u o i s e casing, salvaged plastic, and and turquoise heishi chips. often decorated with coral beads; mosaicdecorated “tab” necklaces with teardropshaped t a b s overlaid w i t h mosaic decoration of jet and turquoise on a background most commonly made of bone; and the corn dance shells used in their feast day dances and by other pueblos, which were large, reddish, spiny oyster shells on which the mosaic decoration was applied. “Heishi” actually means shell, which was the first material used in these traditional necklaces, but

the term now is used to describe any strands of finely made beads, which are extremely labor-intensive to make. These necklaces may be made from turquoise or other stones as well as shell and coral. Dating back to before 1200 AD, these jewelry-making techniques are still being used today by some of the modern Santo Domingo jewelers who have remained true to their traditions. According to Moore, “The importance of this jewelry is that during the Great Depression, the Santo Domingo people found a way to survive economically by creating a new style of affordable jewelry that appealed to a declining tourist market. Based on their traditional methods of jewelry making, they

(since there was no electricity on the pueblo until the 1960s), and each family had their own patterns for the thunderbird forms. Of the numerous pieces to be on view in “Thunderbirds,” most were made between the 1930s and ’50s. Each family had its own patterns for the bird forms, and the birds were typically shaped with wings up, down, straight out or with square shoulders. Also included will be examples that were made as late as the 1960s and are stylistically different from the earlier works, as well as pieces that date earlier, possibly as early as 1800. These include examples of the traditional “tab” necklaces. They are identified by teardropshaped or tapered rectangular tabs that

actually created a new tradition by using their creativity and available materials.” During the Depression years, the Santo Domingo Pueblo people found a unique opportunity to create and market an affordable and appealing form of jewelry for the shrinking tourist market. They were able to produce the jewelry at home involving many family members and using simple tools and materials. Black plastic, readily available from used car batteries or 78 rpm record albums, was flat and uniformly thick, relatively easy to shape and work (especially when heated) and became a popular substitute for jet or bone backings. The jewelry was made by hand using traditional methods and simple tools

w e r e graduated in size, with the central tab being the largest, and were made with natural materials (usually turquoise, jet and, occasionally, shells) mounted on a bone backing. Several of the pieces included in the exhibition are especially rare because of either exceptional workmanship, the thunderbird’s body shape or unusual colors used in the design. Although thunderbird jewelry is not widely recognized in the larger story of Indian jewelry, it is no less significant a form of folk art. For anyone who appreciates fine artisanship and ingenuity, “Thunderbirds: Jewelry of the Santo Domingo Pueblo” is an exhibition not to be missed. To learn more, visit www.history.org.

Historic Burlington Antiques And Art Emporium Antique Show

May 31 was the hottest day of the month, the first 90 degree day for the season, and the customers still came to shop at the H i s t o r i c Burlington Antiques and Art Emporium show. Good sales were reported from Emporium dealers inside the shop and from those set up in the parking lot. The success of the show has convinced the Emporium’s management to begin holding biannual antique shows, one in May and one in October. The next one will take place on Sunday, Oct. 25. The Emporium courtyard is presently filled with

SHOPS & CENTERS Collector Anecdotes And Antics What’s In A Name?

By Shawn Surmick

In December of 1982, George Lucas completed work on what would become the final “Star Wars” film in the original trilogy. Initially titled “Revenge of the Jedi,” the name was eventually changed to “Return of the Jedi” by George Lucas himself under the belief that a Jedi should not seek revenge. By the time the name was officially changed, licensing agreements were already in place and production had started to produce everything from official movie posters to preproduction toys all bearing the name “Revenge of the Jedi.” When the film was eventually released in 1983 under the name “Return of the Jedi,” virtually no mention of the name change was made public except for those few lucky fans that had gotten their hands of some of this now coveted “Star Wars” merchandise. Many of these now sought-after vintage collectibles can be seen steadily selling on the secondary market for thousands of dollars. One of the most famous of these collectibles is the official “Revenge of the Jedi” movie poster. Originally shipped to theaters and distributors beginning in 1982, the infamous bright red poster that bears the “Revenge of the Jedi”

insignia was quickly pulled out of distribution almost as quickly as it appeared. With roughly several thousand posters still in existence at the time of the name change, the decision was made to make the remaining stock of posters available for sale to fans through the official Star Wars Fan Club at a cost of less than $10 per poster! Today, several of these posters have been found in their original shipping containers, and a near mint condition example can sell for close to $1,000 or more. I personally know several collectors who ordered at least one poster and kept it in storage in its original unused condition. Today these posters are not hard to find but are coveted by enthusiasts and collectors alike. However, it should be noted that other collectibles bearing the now infamous “Revenge of the Jedi” name are even more sought after. After the success of the first two “Star Wars” films, Kenner Toys solidified their standing in the domestic toy business. With brisk sales of the popular “Star Wars” toy line, it was no surprise that by late 1980 the company was already under contract by Lucas Films to produce a new set of figures and vehicles based on the upcoming third film in the series. Heavy promotion was used to create demand for the upcoming toys, and since the name of the third film of the series was listed as being “Revenge of the Jedi” Kenner had already started to promote several new figures based on characters from the upcoming film. These promotions already started to appear on card backs of several action

figures created from “The Empire Strikes Back.” By the time the newest action figures were set to enter production, a series of proof cards were created for each character bearing the “Revenge of the Jedi” name. When George Lucas changed the name of the film to “Return of the Jedi,” the original “Revenge of the Jedi” backing cards could not be used for production. As a result, these action figure proof cards made their way onto the secondary market, where they languished for several years. Once again, lucky enthusiasts discovered these proof cards, and the race was on to establish a complete set of all noted characters created under the “Revenge of the Jedi” insignia. Today, it is believed that there are only 50 to 100 of these proof cards in existence for each character created. However, it wasn’t until the advent of third party grading via AFA (Action Figure Authority) that a direct count could be established for any and all graded examples. Flash forward to today, and some of these proof cards graded and encapsulated by AFA in near mint or better condition can easily be seen selling for several thousand dollars each on

the secondary market. That is quite a lot of money to pay for what amounts to a colorful piece of cardboard with no toy included! Adding to the interest of proof card collecting is the fact that several toy vehicle boxes were produced in preproduction form bearing the coveted “Revenge of the Jedi” name. When graded and encapsulated in near mint condition or better, these too can sell for upwards of several thousand dollars each, making the collecting of proofs and preproduction packaging one of the most expensive pursuits in all of vintage “Star Wars” toy collecting. I know of very few lucky collectors who can lay claim to a complete set of “Revenge of the Jedi” proof cards. With the newest film in the “Star Wars” saga set to be released in December of 2015, interest in vintage “Star Wars” toys and collectibles is at an all-time high. Most experts agree that prices have yet to stabilize, and with at least two more films set to be released in the coming years, a collector could do much worse than invest in vintage “Star Wars” collectibles. Items bearing the name “Revenge of the Jedi” are always in demand!

A rare and unusual political banner, created in 1864 to kick off Abraham Lincoln’s presidential re-election campaign, steamrolled its $40,000 opening bid to sell for $106,250 in Heritage Auctions’ Americana and Political auction on May 18 in Dallas, Texas. The auction was carried to $1.1+ million total on the shoulders of an important group of trade store figures, including four cigar store Indians and a collection of items relating to President John F. Kennedy and his family, including personallyowned objects and rare political campaign artifacts. “This was by far one of our most diverse auctions in recent memory, said Tom Slater, director of Americana Auctions at Heritage. “The Lincoln banner is truly one of a kind and now holds the price record for a Lincoln portrait flag at auction. The previous auction record stood for eight years: an 1860 Lincoln portrait flag sold for $83,650 in a February 2007 Heritage auction. “Portrait flag banners from 1864 are far rarer than those with just names and slogans, Slater noted, “with perhaps only a half dozen 1864 examples known to exist. The unique 18-1/5inch-by-9-inch flag offered by Heritage featured the bold slogan “Lincoln and Johnson Liberty and Union beside a portrait of a bearded Lincoln. A diverse group of tobacconist trade figures sold for a combined $161,250, led by an Indian chief in the style of Julius Melchers, which sold for $45,000. Standing 75 inches tall, the figure has been identified by many experts as being Chief Red Jacket, the legendary Seneca orator who negotiated with the United States after the Revolutionary War and signed the Treaty of

Bakewell Celery Vase Realizes $37,375 At Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates

This rare pair of pressed loop/leaf vases, circa 1850, sold for $10.925.

vase made circa 1830. The vase’s exquisite decoration featured a seated greyhound, an iconic motif favored by the Bakewell family. It was wellknown among glass collectors and had been exhibited and published on several occasions. Bidding on the vase opened at $8,500 and quickly soared past its $8,000$12,000 estimate, with nine phone bidders including two institutions all charmed by the unique size and combination of decorative elements of the vase. All prices include the 15 percent buyer’s premium. The auction contained 1,093 lots including several important private collections from New England and the

engraved with an east view of the “Capital Washington” flanked by scrolls, probably Bohemia, circa 1860, also did quite well, selling for $5,750, about twice the estimate. The view is unusual, the form is of a previously unrecorded type, and the stein was in outstanding condition. Another item of American interest that did exceedingly well was a free-blown and engraved decanter featuring a spread-wing shield-breast eagle and stars on one side, and a bird in flight above “LIBERTY” on the other side. Formerly in the collection of Gladys and Paul Richards, the decanter sold for $4,312.50. A rare pair of pressed loop/leaf stand lamps, circa 1850, sold for $6,325.

The lighting section of the sale was very strong and diverse, featuring examples from the whale oil, fluid, and early kerosene periods. A pair of amber pressed loop/leaf stand lamps reached $6,325 because of the extremely rare color. A free-blown and This rare pressed lacy-period pressed whale oil stand lamp sleigh-form open salt, circa with a violet blue bulb-form 1840, sold for $4,025. font, on a patterned, colorless

base, representing only the third example of the type found with a colored font, sold for $3,737.50 (estimated at $1,000-$1,500). Lacy-period pressed glass included rare open salts highlighted by an example in the form of a sleigh, designated SH-1 in “Pressed Glass Salt Dishes of the Lacy Period 1825-1850” by Dorothy Neal. Mrs. Neal classified it as extremely rare, and the Evans catalogue noted that this was only the second example that the firm had sold. Condition of this example was excellent, which obviously contributed to its selling price of $4,025, well above the estimate of $1,000-$2,000. “We were very pleased with the overall performance of this sale. The Lowell/Lomas collection of Boston, Mass., had been started back in the 1940s and included numerous unique and iconic examples of early American glass. The freshness of the collection and conservative estimates combined for some very strong prices on the rare items. With that said, there are still an abundance of bargains in the glass market, including colored vases and lighting, and cutoverlay lamps. It continues to be a great time to acquire beautiful 19th-century American glass and lighting at very attractive prices,” said Jeffrey S. Evans following the sale. The entire auction catalogue with prices realized is available on the firm’s website at www.jeffreysevans.com. For further information, call 540-434-3939 or visit www.jeffreysevans.com.

Front Porch Antiques In Mullica Hill, N.J., Celebrates And Looks Back On The Last 25 Years In Business By Judith Salvino

It started 25 years ago for Front Porch Antiques when my sister and I inherited our aunt’s estate. It was chock full of antiques and collectibles. As novices in the antiques business, we started having yard sales on a weekly basis. On a business trip, my husband, Jim, purchased a Schroeder’s Antiques Book. Thumbing through the book, he spied a picture of a glass Christmas bird. The same bird we had sold at our yard sale for 25 cents was listed in the book for $18. No wonder the woman had asked, “Do you have any more? I’ll take them all.” That did it. We packed up the rest of the estate and brought it back to our hometown in New Jersey. We decided to educate ourselves before we sold another thing. Weekends were spent devouring antique shops, flea markets, yard sales and auctions. Pretty soon we were not only learning all about

antiques but also falling in love with them. We began buying much more than we sold and realized we needed an outlet for our new hobby. In 1989, we discovered co-ops were quite popular. We found one located in a Mullica Hill Antique Village with approximately 28 other antique shops and rented space. We still had much to learn, and as we were setting up shop a fellow dealer purchased a blue and white pitcher from us for $20. When asked, she responded correctly, that it was a spongeware pitcher. Again, Schroeder’s came to the rescue, showing us the pitcher was listed for $250. Oh well, another learning experience. On the other hand, another dealer scouring our booth spied a pair of sulfide marbles for $6 each. She knew they were worth much more, but instead of purchasing them she educated us by saying, “Are you going to mark them up or should I buy them?” Another learning experience, but the one that was more beneficial to us was when we started realizing we could sell a hundred items at a few dollars, making a small profit, or sell one quality item and double our money. That’s when we decided to concentrate on quality rather than quantity and started purchasing Colonial Revival furniture and accessories dating

from late 19th century to the early 20th century. The year was 1990, and it seemed everyone was in the antiques business. You just had to rent an area, and they would come. We now had a full library of antique books and still loved scouring museums, historic houses, antique markets, shops, and yard sales. It was now time to move on and find our own shop. Jim and I purchased a seven-room farmhouse in the same Mullica Hill Antique Village location. At first we rented space and set it up as an upscale co-op antique shop. Our inventory grew, and as dealers left, instead of renting the space, we filled it with our own merchandise. For the next several years we could hardly keep up with it. We purchased wonderful antiques, priced them fairly and had a steady stream of customers. Many regulars felt more like friends than customers. At first the computer age didn’t have much of an impact on us. It was great for research, and it was easy to sell mediocre merchandise at a good price. Then it became obvious that many items previously considered rare were

Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century Tales Of Old Vienna: Entrancing Austrian Enamels By Donald-Brian Johnson

You know what they say: “Good things come in small packages.” Really small packages. During the 1800s, the master artisans of Vienna, Austria, re-created life in miniature. Must-haves of elegant living, from clocks to chairs to carriages, were re-imagined as elaborately decorated miniatures. Their enameled panels, with tiny, finely detailed renditions of classic scenes, were affixed to frameworks of gold, silver, copper, bronze, and other precious metals. Soughtafter from the start, Viennese enamels continue to dazzle today’s collectors. Although perpetually fresh in its use of vivid coloration, enameling is actually an ancient art, dating back at least 3,000 years, to classic Greece. The enameling process, however, remains one that the Greeks would find familiar: enamel (essentially glass tinted with metallic pigments) is fired and fused to metal. Vienna’s claim to fame as “the enameling center of Europe” had very prosaic beginnings-in repair work. During the 19th century, decorative items from the Renaissance era were suffering the ravages of age. Damaged originals were brought to Viennese craftsmen for restoration. So skillful and undetectable were the

repairs that the next step was a simple one: turning out newly-minted, less expensive reproductions. While most

Artisans began to make selective use of Renaissance enameling techniques and themes, refining Ready for Cinderella: a Viennese red and gold and adapting coach, measuring 3-by-6-inches, circa 1800, is them in new estimated at $1,000-$1,250. ways suited to

the times. These works offered homage to the past, rather than simply parroting it, and the move to originality paid off in droves. Viennese enamels attracted recognition at international exhibitions. Buyers appreciated the visual appeal of the varied structural elements utilized in the enameled creations, as well as the permanence of the glazes, which kept colors fresh and unfaded. Hey Auctioneers!

By Anita Stratos

Meissen Porcelain was attempting to perfect particular porcelains or colors, large numbers of blank pieces were discarded because they didn’t meet Meissen’s high standards. Many of these blanks were collected and painted by competitors, then sold as Meissen. The paintwork on

mark were made especially for the court of Elector of Saxony August the Strong, who eventually became reigning monarch of Poland (known as King August II) and was the Meissen factory founder. The mark was also used on objects for the court of his son, August III. Pieces with the AR mark are extremely rare and extremely valuable; most are in museums, so if you see the AR mark on a piece of porcelain for sale, you’re probably looking at a fake or reproduction. (Some AR reproductions were made during the 19th century, so buyers shouldn’t judge authenticity on signs of age. If you decide to purchase such a reproduction, make sure it’s priced accordingly). However, occasionally an authentic AR-marked Meissen piece from a private collection will come up for sale at a high-end auction house. That was the case in 2010, when a 155-piece Meissen collection was auctioned off at Christie’s in London. At that sale, the top lot was a chinoiserie baluster vase with the AR mark, which sold for 121,500 pounds, the equivalent of approximately $189,000 as of this writing, about double the estimate. When assessing a potential piece of Meissen porcelain, take a critical stance to it. By eliminating the emotional “I love it!” aspect, your eye will be more likely to discern problematic points rather than overlooking or making excuses for any red flags you may see. Meissen pieces are handpainted with extreme precision, so any less-than-perfect paintwork could indicate an imitation. During various early experimental periods when Meissen

A fine Barbara Ebersol fraktur sold at Conestoga Auction Company on June 13 for $5,900 to a private collector. Ebersol (1846-1922) was Amish and also a dwarf. She lived in Upper Leacock Township, Lancaster County, Pa. A member of the Gemeinde (community of the redeemed within the Old Order tradition), she was mostly known for drawing German-language watercolor bookplates. A lot has been published on Ebersol, and this vividly colored sampler fraktur drawing is widely considered among her most accomplished works. Reading “Anna/Stolzfusz/ 1864/Barbara Ebersol” and measuring 11 by 14.5 inches,

black is highlighted by a soldier on horseback in the lower right. Also in the sale were her crutches and small rocking chair, which sold together for $2,596.

Barbara Ebersol likely drew this at age 18. It is dated 1864 and is considered by many to have been her finest work. Measuring 11 by 14.5 inches, it sold to a Pennsylvania private collector for $5,900.

thinner and/or lighter in weight than it should be. Only by handling authentic pieces can you become familiar with these qualities. Of course, poor quality in any field, modeling, enameling, gilt, etc. are all signs of an imitation. Vent holes can provide clues as well. Meissen placed small vent holes either underneath a piece or, if that wasn’t possible, the hole was hidden in a place where it wasn’t obvious. An oversized vent hole or one that is too conspicuous may indicate a maker other than Meissen. All images are courtesy of www.Meissencollector.com.

AUCTION 5 P.M. these pieces would not match Meissen’s quality, but today they are collectible as well. Some reproductions are made from casts of authentic Meissen pieces, so the repros will be somewhat smaller in size. In order to make this determination, you need to know the exact measurements of the same original piece and carefully measure the one you’re considering. Color can be another clue, the colors of fakes or reproductions may be too bold or bright, or the eye color may be wrong for the figurines (most 18th-century figures had brown eyes). The best defense against this is to look at a number of Meissen pieces in museums or at auction houses or shops you trust to familiarize yourself with the correct colorings (especially facial, hair and eye colorings of figurines). You can also view images of current and historic Meissen pieces on the Meissen website, http://meissen.com. Other signs of a reproduction include porcelain that is

When it comes to makers’ marks, not all crossed swords are Meissen. This may sound elementary, but I can’t count the number of times I’ve been at auctions and heard people assume that a piece of porcelain is Meissen simply because of a crossed sword mark. When the first Meissen manufactory opened in 1710, the formula and manufacturing process for its porcelain were known by only a few, strictly on a “need to know” basis. These two instrumental aspects were intended to be kept top secret. But, according to the Meissen website, by 1718, a Meissen arcanist decided to use his inside knowledge to compete with Meissen, and he opened his own manufactory in Vienna. At the time, these were considered to be the first Meissen fakes/knockoffs, but they’re now valuable collectibles in their own right. As always, secrets were leaked even further, and other manufactories shot up as well, as competitors vied for attention in the fine porcelain market. Over the next several decades, Meissen counterfeits or adaptations were produced in factories in England, Germany, France, Italy, and China. Meissen had been attempting to mark its porcelain before the first new competitor opened, but the company only discovered what they considered to be a “forgery-proof” underglaze cobalt mark around 1720. The crossed swords were chosen, which reflected a portion of the Electorate of Saxony coat of arms. These alternated with letter marks, including KPM, MPM, and KPF, and occasionally other symbols were used with the crossed swords, such as asterisks and numbers. You can find many of Meissen’s marks, including lesser-known ones, in Otto Walcha’s book “Meissen Porcelain.” Many reproductions and fakes bear one of these marks (especially the crossed sword variations), so check the mark carefully to make sure it’s done correctly. A mark associated with Meissen never fully identifies a piece as authentic; it’s just a starting point. One mark that bears mentioning is the AR (Augustus Rex) mark, which was used in the first half of the 18th century. Although there are variations on the appearance of the mark, it was always underglazed in blue and painted by hand. Pieces bearing the AR

Magazine, The View from Catonsville and others. “A History of Baltimore Porcelain” was published in the 2012 edition of “Ceramics in America.” At the time of his passing, Ken was researching an article on Rebekah-at-theWell teapots. Although his main collecting passion was the wares of the Bennett Pottery of Baltimore, Ken also collected vintage cocktail shakers, paintby-numbers pictures, and 78 rpm records. A car enthusiast and fan of Formula One auto racing, he enjoyed classical music and played the trombone. He was a founding member of the Salem Brass and continued to arrange music for the group when illness forced him to stop playing in 2012. He was also a founding member of the Catonsville Seven, a local travel writers’ group. Ken loved being the grandfather of Ruby (9), Marigold (3) and Roland (1) McKerrow. He saw them nearly every day. He was the faithful son-in-law of Ruth Miller. A memorial service for Ken was held at his church, Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, located at 905 Frederick Road, Catonsville, Md., at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 13. Memorial donations in his name may be directed to Salem’s Memorial Fund.

Kenneth Alan Beem, longtime antiques enthusiast and writer, died on June 3, 2015, of cardiac arrest. He was 72. The son of Richard and Jean Beem, Ken was born in Columbus, Ohio, on Oct. 3, 1942. After graduating from Mifflin High School in 1960, he attended Tulane University, earning a bachelor’s degree in 1964 and a master’s degree two years later. He was awarded his Ph.D. in Geology, specializing in micropaleontology, in 1973 from the University of Cincinnati and served a fellowship at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. In 1971, he joined the faculty of Montgomery College in Rockville, Md., and taught geology and biology for over 36 years. In 1974, he married Barbara Miller. Barbie and Ken had one child, daughter Katherine, born in 1980. With Barbara’s parents, the Beems moved to Catonsville, Md., in 1984; it was the purchase of their home there that sparked his interest in antiquing. Ken became interested in Baltimore potteries of the 19th and early 20th century in the early 1980s, thereby beginning a 30-year quest for knowledge on the subject. With Barbara, he was a regular contributor to AntiqueWeek (beginning in 1992); his monthly column, “Question Box,” was a great source of personal satisfaction. They shared a byline for nearly 23 years and were known as the “Beem Team” by their editors. Together, Barbara and Ken wrote features and historic property stories for The New England Antiques Journal. Over the years, their words appeared in a variety of publications, including the Baltimore Sun, the Baltimore Examiner, Grapevine

Smack Dab (Continued from page 11)

While copying the Renaissance in overall style, pictorial representations on Viennese enameled panels were very much of the 19th century. Pastoral vistas abounded, with lush greenery, bountiful floral groupings, peacefully burbling streams, and sun-kissed clouds. At the center of things were the leading players: statuesque maidens and their dashing suitors. Attendant nymphs watched on approvingly, and even the occasional cupid took wing. What stories did these scenes tell? Their legends had long since vanished from popular

memory. All that really mattered was the of-the-moment beauty of the illustration. Viennese enamels proved ideal accents for the 19th century drawing room. Their subtle shadings, with occasional eye-popping bursts of brilliant color, provided the perfect complement to similarlyhued furnishings and wall hangings. The enameling technique was initially applied to usable objects, such as bowls, trays, and vases, of normal, or even enhanced size. But the artisans of Vienna came to realize that “anyone can do large.” Their enameled pieces

In fact, 2001 was one of our best years, and sales remained brisk until 2005. After that, there seemed to be a slow decline in sales, and then in 2008, the recession struck. Several shops in our area closed their doors as the owners decided to retire. In fact, all over the country many of our interesting haunts were no longer in business. With the computer age upon us, we decided to build our own website at www.the frontporchantiques.com and also joined an online selling website, Ruby Lane. One of our first sales went to Beijing, China. This person would have never come into our shop, and the sales have continued to come from areas in and outside of New Jersey. We’re reaching a customer base that would never have had the opportunity to visit our shop. Our opinion on selling furniture online has

became smaller and smaller, as did any realistic functions the objects might once have served. Exquisite, and impossibly tiny, scent and snuff bottles were now gazed at admiringly, rather than actually put to their intended use. Miniature jewel chests were equipped with artfully designed pullout drawers, just the right size to hold, well, nothing, really. The focus had shifted to the purely ornamental. The most fascinating miniatures are the “novelties,” which work their intricately detailed magic within just a few inches. Even Tom Thumb would find himself hard-pressed to squeeze into a 3-by-6-inch Viennese coach. These were conveyances meant for really small fry. Viennese enamel miniatures are, in effect, the tiniest of theatrical props, waiting to make their appearance on some elfin stage. Supreme art and artifice have gone into their creation. Collectors value Viennese enamels not only for what they are: sumptuously realized objets d’art, but also for what they represent, artwork which celebrates the past by melding it with the future. That’s a worthy goal for art in any age. One lesson was how to learn how to take quality and interesting photos. It’s best to take several photos showing every angle. If the piece is signed, make sure that’s visible.
