FRIDAY JULY 7, 2017 • VOL. 48, NO. 27 Art Nouveau To Andy Warhol:

“America’s Folk Art” Celebrates 60th Anniversary Of Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum Some pieces are pure whimsy, others are completely useful. One thing is certain, all of the objects featured in “America’s Folk Art,” celebrating the 60th anniversary of the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum (AARFAM), one of the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, highlight an art form as culturally rich and diverse as America itself. Through approximately 50 objects that include furniture, sculpture and paintings made between the 1700s and the present, the country’s oldest, continuously operating institution This chest of drawers from Northumberland county, solely dedicated to the collec- Pa., 1831, tulip poplar, yellow pine, white pine and tion, exhibition and preserva- paint, were a bequest of Mrs. Effie Thixton Arthur, tion of American folk art will 1979.2000.3. showcase why this art form (historically aimed chiefly at the middle class) is enjoying a popularity resurgence. The long-term exhibition, opened on July 1, will remain on view through December 2019. “Abby Aldrich Rockefeller was a visionary collector, recognizing the merits of everything from contemporary art to traditional folk art as early as the 1920s. It is entirely fitting that we celebrate her contributions to the American art world in this, the 60th anniversary of the museum named in her honor,” said Ronald L. The AARFAM, however, defines its collection of American folk art as objects made from the 1700s through today by amateur or professional artists and tradesmen for their own pleasure or needs or for sale to the common person. Folk art may show an awareness of academic art conventions, illustrate the tastes of popular culture or indicate conservative folk roots. “America’s Folk Art” will illustrate objects created across the country from the Northeast to Oregon, the South to Mid-West and date from the 18th through the 21st centuries. The exhibition will offer This Ice Cream Scoop Sculpture by Vollis case studies of a variety of works of Simpson (1919-2013) of Lucama, N.C., art on the themes of inspirations, 1995, paint on metal with reflective coating recycled materials, whimsy and and plastic film, was a gift of Ellin and Baron Gordon, 2006.801.1. popular art. Another section will pay tribute to Abby Aldrich Rockefeller through a video and display of some of her original pieces; it was 250 objects from her collection that became the founding core of what has become the AARFAM. “From its inception, the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller collection represented some of the finest examples of American folk art,” said Laura Pass Barry, Juli Granger curator of paintings, drawings and sculpture. “This exhibition celebrates our founder’s vision and the sustained growth of the museum collection over the past six decades through a visually rich and dynamic display of material.” Among the many star pieces in “America’s Folk Art” is “The Preacher,” a carving made of butternut and white pine made (probably) in Indiana, ca. 1870, by an unnamed artist. Mrs. Rockefeller purchased it from the famed art dealer Edith

At the time Mrs. Halpert acquired the piece, it was believed to be a portrait of the charismatic 19th-century Congregationalist clergyman Henry Ward Beecher. It has since been identified as a stylized version of a famous 19thcentury German statue of the 16th-century theologian Martin Luther. The statue was so popular that soon after it was erected in 1868, small metal replicas were made as souvenirs, one of which likely served as inspiration for this carving. The artist has created here a piece that concisely conveys the compelling image of a man in communion with his maker. Another of Mrs. Rockefeller’s objects given to Colonial Williamsburg to be on view in “America’s Folk Art” is the “Liberty Enlightening the World” weathervane, a copperand-zinc alloy piece probably made in New York between 1900 and 1910. At the time, in order to remain competitive and to encourage new business, weathervane manufacturers periodically introduced fresh, current designs. James Monroe, another founding father who was elected as president, also died on July 4, 1831. He was the third president in a row who died on the anniversary of independence. The origin of the first American flag is unknown. Some historians believe it was designed by New Jersey Congressman Francis Hopkinson and sewn by Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross. For 23 years, the American flag had 15 stars and 15 strips with the addition of the 14th state Vermont and

displaying spiffy, colorful attire and immaculate, wellmaintained equipment. A whimsical example of folk art in the exhibition is Vollis Simpson’s “Ice Cream Scoop Sculpture,” made in 1995 in Lucama, N.C. This colorful confection, which moves with the wind, is studded with ice cream scoops and metal stars cut from cast-off, reflective highway signs. Simpson (19192013), whose work became the official folk art of North Carolina after his death, was born into a farming family. Before World War II, he moved houses as a business and after the war, he and friends opened a machinery repair shop. Between the two jobs, he collected myriad metal, industrial and transportation scraps that eventually became the basis for marvelous sculptures and whirligigs. It wasn’t until after he retired at age 65 that he began to create wonderful pieces that soon took

over the land around his house; wind-driven pieces of all shapes, materials and color attracted the attention of passers-by. This piece is one of his smaller creations. “America’s Folk Art” is generously funded by Don and Elaine Bogus. The ideal introduction to the art form for novices, “America’s Folk Art” will also offer a superb assemblage that aficionados will appreciate. Visitors of all ages will delight in the colorful works selected for view. For those folk art lovers who missed seeing the acclaimed exhibition “Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Museum: Evolution and Revolution” at New York’s Winter Antiques Show in January, “America’s Folk Art” will also include several of the popular objects featured in that show. It took two days of debating and revisions of wording to the Declaration, and finally, on July 4th, the Congress signed the most important document in the history of the United States of America. Independence Day is often associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions, and political speeches and ceremonies. Collector Anecdotes And Antics

Collecting The Written Word: A Look Inside Rare Book Collecting can easily sell for five figures or more depending on the auction venue it is sold in. Book collecting is a category in the antiques and collectibles trade that tends to experience cycles of increasing demand along with cycles of depressed interest. The most highly prized books are first editions of historic or significant interest. These can include classic American literature like “The Great Gatsby or “Ethan Frome, scarce medieval masterpieces like rare editions of Dante’s “Inferno, and even hard-to-find books published at the birth of our great nation. If the book in question is a first or scarce edition and has significant relevance, it is sure to be in demand. Ironically, one of the biggest contributing factors to the current rise in popularity of book collecting is the reality television series “Pawn Stars. One of the most popular onscreen experts shown frequently on the show is the highly educated and personable book enthusiast Rebecca Romney. She is the manager at a high-end antique book store, Bauman’s Rare Books, which has several locations situated throughout the United States, including, most notably, Las Vegas, Nev., where “Pawn Stars takes place. Bauman’s Rare Books caters to distinguished collectors of the published word and has both an online storefront as well as

several physical locations. Another reason vintage book collecting has gained such a large and growing following over the years is the rise of online auctioneers that cater to a growing list of clients. Heritage Auction Galleries is one of the most prominent auctioneers catering to rare books in collectorquality condition. Their Signature Auctions devoted to the written word attract bidders from around the world as well as museums. No mention of rare book collecting would be complete without at least commenting on the financial aspect of the growing trend. While not every scarce or first-edition book will appreciate, if chosen correctly, rare books can be a

fantastic investment. This is especially true of even more modern published books from the likes of first edition novels written by horror master Stephen King and even first edition copies of the now highly coveted “Harry Potter series of books. Some of these books can even reach and exceed four figures at auction, with scarce copies approaching five figures. Books that are able to transcend modern pop culture appreciate the most, but be forewarned, attempting to speculate on which books will be tomorrow’s coveted classic is next to impossible. When the first books featuring Harry Potter appeared on store shelves in the late 1990s, few could have guessed just how successful they would

become. As a result, coveted first editions from the very first books in the series were not printed in high quantities. Today, copies in collector quality condition can bring massive amounts when placed in high profile auctions. Rare book collecting is an often overlooked subset of the antiques and collectibles trade. Luckily, the tide as well as collector’s tastes are slowly changing. This is causing a boom in the rare book market that is resonating with younger collectors as well as old. Patient collectors may reap the rewards of a secondary market showing signs of life. Just don’t expect my coveted first edition copy of “The Great Gatsby to hit the market anytime soon.

“So we beat on, b o a t s against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past. I first heard those chilling, but elegant words muttered at the age of 17 in Mrs. Stahl’s English Literature class. It didn’t take long for the book in which those words were made famous, F. Scott Fitzgerald’s “The Great Gatsby, to quickly become one of my favorite novels. To this day, that book has defined an important part of my life. As a result of my ability to relate with the work in question, I set out to purchase a first edition of “The Great Gatsby fresh out of high school. The quest opened my eyes to one of the most exciting markets in the trade. The year was 1995, and the internet was just gaining ground. AuctionWeb, which would become known as eBay later that same year, just launched, while a little known upstart called Amazon that sold books and related media was planning a well-calculated premier. The antiques and collectibles marketplace at this point in time was not yet synonymous with e-commerce. Outside of the launch of eBay, few well-known auction sites existed, as most still

did business via mail order catalog, phone bidding, and in person. Over the next five years, the internet would redefine auctioneering by way of online bidding and selling. Still, by 1997 I wasn’t able to track down a first edition copy of “The Great Gatsby in the condition I wanted. In fact, my quest wouldn’t be complete until after the new millennium when an associate in the trade remembered I wanted a copy and was able to source one through a well publicized auction. The price I paid for that book at the time was less than 20 percent the going rate for what a similar conditioned copy would sell for today. Book collecting is a lesser known field of the greater antiques and collectibles trade. Most collectors of classic books are established professionals who value the published word and seek out books that have a lot of personal meaning. The reason my fine condition copy of “The Great Gatsby rose in value was due to society’s fascination with the story and its universal theme. Gatsby was a flawed romantic obsessed with an idealized fantasy. Thanks in part to the blockbuster movie released in 2013, demand for first editions of the book rose exponentially. Today, a first edition copy of “The Great Gatsby in fine condition (the book connoisseur’s definition of near mint)

“Miniwatt / Philips Radio,” 1931, which shines in primary hues, sold for $6,000. Ottokar Mascha’s “Österreichische Plakatkunst,” circa 1914, was the only comprehensive book published about Austrian posters during their golden age. The rare tome doubled its estimate, selling for $18,750. More recent works included the promotional flyer for Andy Warhol’s “My Hustler,” a 1966 film by the artist; the typographical work sold to a collector for $6,250. The prismatic poster for “The Electric Factory / Jimi Hendrix Experience,” 1968, by Icabod (Rob Stewart) and Snake (Karl Howard), reached $4,750. “This buoyant sale showed just how desirable good graphic design is to collectors. It covered an array of styles and eras, and in each there were impressive results. Perhaps most astounding was how the top 20 lots were split almost evenly between dealers and collectors. To have so many dealers participate at such a robust level clearly indicates that even their clients were showing an increased interest in the material,” said Swann president and director of Vintage Posters, Nicholas D. Lowry.

record went to a Soviet propaganda poster captioned in Russian, “Let’s Build a Fleet of Airships in Lenin’s Name!” 1931, by Georgij Kibardin, selling for $5,250. Making its auction debut was the monumental poster “Auto Races / World’s Greatest Drivers,” standing more than 12 feet tall, which sold for $6,250. The previously unrecorded “Art Deco Fete de Nuit aux Folies Bergere,” 1928, by Maurice Picauld, reached $7,250 in its first auction appearance. The sale featured a premier selection of Art Nouveau and Wiener Werkstätte material, led by Bertold Löffler’s bold poster “Kunstschau Wien,” 1908, which reached $42,500. Additional highlights included “Secession 49 – Ausstellung,” a 1918 exhibition poster by Egon Schiele into which he incorporated a self portrait ($22,500). Works by the poster-world icon Adolphe Mouron Cassandre performed well, with two major works confirming his position as a design visionary; the monumental 1935 poster “Normandie,” emphasizing the incredible size of the transatlantic ship, reached $22,500, while

Swann Galleries’ May 25 auction of Graphic Design offered a cornucopia of inspired design spanning fin de siècle Art Nouveau masters to psychedelic concert posters. The top lot of the sale was “Col Van Heusen,” 1928, one of the most elegant, Cubist-style designs created by Charles Loupot. The strikingly colored work, which was intended to advertise men’s collars, displays some of the richest inking seen in the artist’s work. It sold to the trade for $50,000, exceeding its pre-sale high estimate of $30,000. Works by Loupot performed well overall, with several claiming places in the top lots. The verdant 1923 advertisement for Voisin Automobiles reached $30,000, while his 1919 poster for “Sato / Cigarettes Egyptiennes” went to a collector for $7,500. Several works reached new heights at auction, most notably Ludwig Hohlwein’s charming life-size image of a baby zebra and a macaw, intended to promote the opening of the new Munich Zoo “Besuchet den Tiergarten, 1912,” which was purchased by a collector for $22,500, a record for the work. Holabird Western Americana Holds Three-Day Sale Palladium Commemorative Coin Produced For The 1939 World’s Fair Sells For $6,353 A palladium commemorative coin produced for the 1939 World’s Fair in New York – about the size of a silver dollar and known as a “socalled” dollar in collecting circles for that reason, since it can’t be used as currency – realized $6,353 to take top lot honors at an auction held April 28, 29, and 30 by Holabird Western Americana Collections LLC, online and in its Reno, Nev., facility. The coin, made from palladium (a platinum group metal), was produced by Baker & Company Inc., a precious metals refinery in Newark, N.J. The obverse depicted Athena and read, “This Charm is Genuine Palladium.” The reverse showed the World’s Fair logo and named Englehard Industries alongside. It was housed in the original satin and velvet lined leatherette jeweler’s box. The three-day auction event consisted of nearly 1,800 lots in a wide range of collecting categories, including mining collectibles, old bottles, postal history, Wells Fargo Express, gold and jewelry, coins and currency, toys, cowboy and Indian, firearms and more. The auction was conducted in Holabird’s gallery, located at 3555 Airway Drive (Suite #308) in Reno, Nev. About 50 people attended the sale in person over the course of the three days, while 2,100 others registered to bid online, via the platforms iCollector.com, I n v a l u a b l e . c o m , Auctionzip.com, eBay Live and AuctionMobility.com (specifically for iPhone users). In addition, around 50 phone bids were placed, while absentee bids – mail, fax,

email and advance online bidding – were all brisk. The Philadelphia Museum of Art recently announced a number of new acquisitions that will significantly enrich its collection. Among the works that have been recently acquired are as follows: a group of contemporary films and videos; Japanese ink paintings mounted as handscrolls, hanging scrolls, and folding screens; nine pieces of early American furniture that illuminate the artistic achievements of cabinetmakers in Colonial New England and Pennsylvania; and a major work in stained glass dating to the 1520s commissioned for a church in Paris. These works have come to the museum variously as gifts, promised gifts, and purchases. Some will be placed on view in the galleries in the coming weeks. “Building the collections is among the most important of the museum’s activities. We often speak about the museum as housing a collection of collections, because the vast majority of our holdings have come as gifts from generous donors. And when works are purchased, this is most often made possible by contributions. We are deeply grateful to all those in our community and beyond who continue to help us develop a collection that ranks among the finest in this country,” said Timothy Rub, the museum’s George D. Widener director and CEO. Contemporary Art In recent years, the museum has placed an increasing emphasis on acquiring works of time-based media. This effort has been substantially aided by the recent gifts of Philadelphia collectors Peter and Mari Shaw. Their donation of 10 works ranges from singlechannel projections to multimonitor installations created by a number of prominent midcareer artists, including Fikret

Golf is one of the world’s most popular individual sports for both men and women. But where did the word “Golf” originate? According to Scottish Golf History, the common misconception that the word “golf” is an acronym for “Gentlemen Only - Ladies Forbidden” is definitely not true. It is generally accepted that “golf” is derived from an old word meaning “club.” The first documented mention of the word “golf” was in Edinburgh on March 6, 1457, when King James II banned “Ye Golf” in an attempt to encourage more archery practice, which was being neglected. What’s it worth? The value of golf items will vary widely

Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates Holds Successful Two-Day Auction Ceramics, Coins, Currency, Confederate Material Among Many Strengths The Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates Americana and Fine Antiques Auction held June 16 and 17 was a successful event and generated strong prices in multiple categories. The two-day format consisted of 1,110 lots of highquality material, much of which was fresh to the market, and, in many cases, had descended directly in the families of the original owners. In addition, the sale included property deaccessioned by the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, all proceeds to benefit the Collections Acquisition Fund. Bidding was intense throughout each day, with strong institutional interest and over 3,000 registered bidders participating in house and online. Six national and regional museums were among the successful bidders. Session I on Friday started the weekend off with a bang. The 273-lot offering featured a selection of fine coins and currency from a Frederick

County, Md., estate. Assembled as early as 1904 and comprising many rare early American, Confederate, and foreign examples, all fresh and unrecorded, the Frederick County collection generated significant presale interest and produced strong results. The top lot from this collection was an extremely rare Confederate States 1861 Montgomery, Ala., $100 Type 3 note in outstanding, nearly uncirculated condition, which garnered $24,570. All prices reported include a 17 percent buyer’s premium. Other noteworthy results from Friday’s selection of coins and currency included a 1907 Saint Gaudens high-relief $20 gold coin bearing Roman numerals selling for $16,380; a Confederate States 1861 Montgomery, Ala., $50 Type 4 note, $14,040; and a Confederate States 1861 Richmond, Va., $50 Type 15 note, which sold for $8,775. Friday’s session also included a choice offering of firearms

Untouched and descended directly in a Page County, Va., family, the rare firearm realized $14,040. Session II on Saturday consisted of the firm’s usual diverse selection of Americana and fine antiques, with several categories demonstrating signs of vigor in what can be an unpredictable market. Highlighting Saturday was an important

Anna Pottery stoneware presentation vase made by master potter Cornwall Elihu Kirkpatrick (1814-90) for his daughter, Amy R. Kirkpatrick (1862-1935). Acquired directly from the Kirkpatrick family and offered as the auction’s centerpiece, the iconic vessel sparked tremendous presale interest from institutions and collectors alike. The weekend’s top lot at $64,350, the vase was purchased, after heated bidding, by a major New York City museum, where it will reside as an important part of the institution’s permanent collection. Other noteworthy results from the Saturday session included a Susan Catherine Moore Waters (American, 18231900) oil-on-canvas pastoral landscape painting, selling for $21,060; a rare Benjamin Chandlee (1723-91) carved cherry tall-case clock, $19,890; an 1803 Wythe County, Va., folk art fraktur birth and baptismal certificate attributed to the Wild Turkey artist, $11,700; and a Virginia or North Carolina petite walnut cellarette or bottle case on stand, which sold for $10,530. The Saturday session concluded with an excellent offering of 18th- and 19thcentury ceramics, featuring the Kurt O’Hare and Barbara O’Hare collection of Staffordshire transfer-printed American Historical views. Including many rare forms bearing unique design elements, the O’Hare collection produced strong results. Highlighting this group was a

Our in-house crowd was strong, resulting in over 180 bid numbers being issued to real bodies, and we saw a large percentage of items walk out the door on sale day,” said company president and auctioneer Jeffrey S. Evans. “The overall excitement and strong sales results

reflect the freshness and high quality of the merchandise offered. In addition, the auction was 99 percent unreserved, so the results are a true and honest gauge of the current market. We already have a strong Southern collection in house for our next Americana auction, so the fall sale should be another great event,” added Evans. The firm’s next Americana Auction is scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 11. For complete auction results or other information, visit www.jeffreysevans.com.

A Tisket, A Tasket: A Bounty Of Beautiful Bride’s Baskets Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century By Donald-Brian Johnson “Something old, something new.” If you’re on the hunt for a wedding gift this summer, how about a gift that combines both options - something old and something new? The choice is as close at hand as your nearest antique show or online auction site. It’s been around for well over a century, yet its style and usage remain timelessly modern. It’s a “bride’s basket.” Bride’s baskets have often gone by more generic monikers, such as flower or fruit bowls. When first introduced in the late 1800s, however, their elegant lines made them a hit with both wedding gift-givers of the time and the couples lucky enough to receive such a memento. And, while the gift tag may have been addressed to both bride and groom, there was no denying who the present was really intended for. That’s why

these unique glass centerpieces in their graceful metal frames were soon dubbed, and have remained, “bride’s baskets.” Bride’s baskets were an offshoot of handled silver baskets, a popular (and pricey) wedding accessory of the early 19th century. As the church service began, a flower girl would strew blossoms from a silver basket (sterling or coin). At the reception following, that now-empty basket provided a picturesque receptacle for the bridal bouquet, serving as an attractive centerpiece. And, when all the wedding hoopla had concluded, the silver basket found a permanent place of honor in the newlyweds’ home. The market perked up considerably with the introduction of bride’s baskets made of much less costly silver plate. Relieving all that unrelenting silveryness, and contributing to the basket’s usefulness, was the addition of a colorful glass insert bowl designed to complement the silver frame. The lightness of the design, reminiscent of an actual straw basket, ably served as a visual offset to the heft of the glass and metal. Early inserts were traditional round bowls, and the processing possibilities were limitless. Glass could be satin, frosted, dotted with glittering mica chips, or even “cased,” resulting in different colorations on the bowl interior and exterior. Soon, the bowl shape moved far beyond the round. Ovals, rectangles, triangles, and even shallow circular plates vied for position as glass inserts. Smaller baskets, sometimes with an accompanying spoon, or rigaree (horizontal bands of applied glass embellishments), were used for marmalade and sweetmeats. These had a deeper “cup” shape, ideal for holding in their somewhat sloppier contents. The most visually interesting variations occurred in manipulating the basket edging. Here, the glass could be crimped, crinkled, fluted, ruffled, or even deeply dipped, with portions of the interior folded outward, to create an

Often adding to the beauty were handpainted accents, such as flowers, vines, leaves, and fruit. Metal frames also evolved, moving from a simple base with a delicate basket handle arching over the glass insert to more elaborate configurations. Some handles, bedecked with vine-like filigree, boasted central cut-out silhouette plaques of flowers and birds. Other baskets had no real functioning “handle” at all, just decorative metal spokes extending from the

The bases themselves were at times perched on column-like pedestals or on metal renditions of cupids and other mythic creatures. Since their basic components are decorative glass and silver-of-some-sort stands, bride’s baskets are not inexpensive. Even the smallest will set you back somewhere around $200. The traditional larger bride’s baskets hover in the $400-$600 range, while the most elaborate designs - those on pedestals, or with significant handpainting, extensive applied trim, or unusual edging - can teeter close to the thousand-dollar mark. So, if you’re planning on buying one as a wedding gift for your friends, make sure they’re really good friends.

Overall, the annual NAA Marketing Competition continues as the premier contest for NAA members to showcase their marketing efforts. The total number of entries again showed healthy member participation, as seen over the past several years, and the quality level of those entries again was impressive.

This year, top-level marketing efforts came forth from 22 states ranging nearly coast-to-coast. The task of determining winners was given to a panel of marketing and advertising professionals who represent backgrounds in branding, promotion, media, public relations and graphic design. Judging criteria included considerations such as creativity, message, ad effectiveness, clarity and visual appeal.
