Robert E. Lee’s Desk Tops Cowan’s Spring American History Auction Unique 19th-Century Photography Highlights Strong Sale A desk owned by Gen. Robert E. Lee was the top lot of a day of robust bidding in Cowan’s American History Live Salesroom Auction, which was held on June 9. Selling for $32,400, the Lee desk was one of eight lots to sell for more than $10,000 during the five-hour sale that saw over 600 collectors, dealers, and institutions bidding on 392 lots. Prices reported include buyer’s premium. In addition to the lure of owning something that once belonged to one of the Civil War’s most famous generals, the humble, drop-front desk has an impeccable provenance, which helped drive bidding past its estimate. At the time of the general’s death, Lee’s widow gifted the desk to his personal physician, Dr. Robert Madison, himself a descendent of President James Madison. Madison’s family passed the desk down for generations before consigning it to Cowan’s.

This quarter plate daguerreotype of a mathematics teacher with young students sold for $10,800.

“Waud’s illustrations so rarely hit the market that it’s considered a special sale when even one comes up at auction,” said Katie Horstman, Cowan’s director of American History. “We had nine today, so needless to At the time of Gen. Heritage Auctions’ June 11 Arms and Armor, Civil War and Militaria Auction in Dallas, Texas, grossed $1 million, with Lt. William L. Willhoit’s D-Day battle-scarred flag taking top lot honors at $55,000. “This flag is not only memorable because of the pivotal days it was flown, it is momentous because of the story that comes with it,” said Jason Watson, Arms and Armor consignment director at Heritage. “Ensign Wilhoit, a true American hero, assumed command of the LCT 540 after his officer-in-charge was killed in the first moments of the assault. Despite his young age, Wilhoit persisted and continued to fight and lead for the next four days of the landing,” continued Watson. The exceedingly rare Operation Overlord and Neptune “Situation Map” owned and used by Gen. Omar Bradley made its auction debut and went for $43,750. The

auction was 93 percent sold by lot. Additional flags highlighted at the auction included a 34-Star, Battle of Antietam, blood-stained flag that realized $27,500, following interest from three bidders, and a 35-Star Company K Silk Cavalry Guidon, which sold for $8,750. A unique assortment of guns were offered, led by a fine Colt Model 1860 Army Revolver, which ended at $16,250. A Colt with original blued finish, a Colt Single Action Army 45, realized $15,000 and was offered in the original Colt black box that was numbered to the gun. An engraved L.C. Smith crown grade double barrel shotgun sold for $12,500; a scarce and highly desirable Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum with original box and certificate realized $11,562; and a Colt Bisley Model single action revolver from 1907 brought $10,000. Virginia Beach Antiques Antique Radio Club Of Illinois To Host 36th Annual Radiofest Three-Day Convention Set For Aug. 4 To 6 Show To Host Over 100 Exhibitors The Antique Radio Club of Illinois (ARCI) will hold its 36th annual Radiofest on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Aug. 4, 5, and 6, at the Medinah Shriners, 550 Shriners Drive in Addison, Ill. This year will mark an expansion of Radiofest to include post WWII electronics, including radio, television, antique and vintage audio and amplifiers. This event commemorates post World War II electronics. Radiofest is one of the largest gatherings of electronic collectors in the country. The Medinah Shriners in Addison is along the I-355 corridor, roughly 45 minutes from downtown Chicago and both Midway and O’Hare airports. Ample free parking is available for all attendees. The event will open with the club’s large radio auction on Friday evening at 6:30 p.m. Top-of-the-line radios, rare advertising, recording equipment, antique and vintage audio, amplifiers, vintage television and phonograph items will be the featured fare. The thrill of a live auction creates a high energy opening to Radiofest. The public is welcome to sell their radios at the auction for a nominal charge. Registration for the auction begins at 3:30 p.m. Saturday morning starts early with the electronic flea market. Selling spaces are filled with radios, phonographs, amplifiers, televisions, parts for restorations and, for many, nostalgic memories of the past. Also on Saturday, ARCI will provide free radio appraisals. The public can bring in actual radios or pictures of their radio. Experts will advise them of condition, the age of the radio, suggestions for restoration and an approximate market value. Radiofest offers educational seminars to club members (annual dues are $25,

How To Succeed Selling At Auction Plan For Your Stuff By Andrew Richmond Contrary to what you have heard, having a great auction of your collection doesn’t solely depend on the prices achieved. That’s a common misconception, and, frankly, it was one of the great frustrations during my former life as an auctioneer. For too many collectors, the largest factor in their perception of their auction success is the one thing that nobody can control - the prices. A successful auction can be measured in other ways, such as a great catalog that memorializes your collection, or an auction event that reunites old friends and becomes a great final memory of your collecting career, or, of course, a successful auction may simply be one where all of your treasures find new homes and your stewardship comes to an end. While you can’t control prices, it is possible to help ensure your collection has its best shot at great prices, and at the same time, ensure a successful sale according to any of the other metrics. You can do so by being a great consignor, a real partner with your chosen auctioneer, and the first step is to embrace that very fact. You and your auctioneer are on the same team, and need to work together. True, you may have

haggled over commission, but once that contract is signed, leave the antagonism behind. Hopefully, you are also working well in advance of the planned auction. Giving an auctioneer a mere few weeks to present your lifetime collection to the bidding public will result in a rush job, and rarely are rushed auctions successful by any standard. Work should probably begin months in advance, giving the auctioneer and his or her crew time to plan the auction and do the work in a thorough and organized fashion. Next, you should take advantage of the planning you have done (I hope!). Gather all your invoices, receipts, provenance, and other information about objects in your collection together, and hand the whole pile (or a photocopied pile) over to the auctioneer in an organized manner so that the cataloger(s) can match up information to object (I was once handed a grocery bag full of loose receipts. That’s NOT the way to do it). Do this not only to help your collection sell better, but also because responsible collectors ensure that provenance stays with objects when they change hands. You should also ask to participate in the cataloguing process. I’m not talking about you actually measuring tables and writing entries, but rather, making yourself available to the catalogers should

questions arise. Review the catalog proof and fill in information that you know but might not have been in the documentation you provided. Understand, however, that opinions differ, and it’s entirely possible, probable actually, that some of your objects will be attributed differently, or may have condition descriptions that differ from what you always thought, or might be estimated way below what you paid. This leads me to my final recommendation for a successful auction. Respect the auctioneer, the staff, and their process. Remember, you selected them to help you because you thought they were a good fit, and they are on your team. They know how to assemble and market auctions. Let them do their work. It’s okay to ask to be included, and it’s even okay to ask questions and voice concerns (in fact you should, rather than wait and complain after the auction). Just remember, you are on the same team. My favorite auction sellers were those who called me after the sale, regardless of sale prices, and thanked our team for their hard work. A seller who is an enthusiastic partner with their auctioneer stands a great chance of having a great auction. As I said, prices are up to the whim of the market on sale day, but with a team attitude, your auction can still be a success! Andrew Richmond is the owner of Wipiak Consulting & Appraisals in Ohio.

The J. Paul Getty Museum recently made available more than 30,000 images of objects in the museum collection using the International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF), which allows researchers to bring together images from different institutional websites for comparison, manipulation and annotation. By clicking on the IIIF logo next to an image, users can pull together images from different collections, dragging and dropping millions of images and associated metadata from institutions across the world for side-by-side analysis. As a result, for the first time, users can digitally examine works of art held in separate collections worldwide and easily share their findings. “With IIIF, scholars can move images beyond the confines of separate institutional websites and bring them together for study. It allows for deeper digital engagement with our collections than ever before,” said James Cuno, president of the

It’s Out With The Old And In With The New For U.K. High Street Antique Shops By David Jinks ParcelHero’s new report on the impact of home deliveries on United Kingdom brick and mortar stores, “2030: The Death of the High Street” reveals that e-commerce will have captured 40 percent of the overall retail market in less than 15 years’ time. The antiques trade has been far from immune from the continued growth of online auctions and marketplace traders – although it is arguably one of the retail sectors that has had to adapt the swiftest to the arrival of new ecommerce technology. From the local antique shop to Christie’s South Kensington auction room, the impact of the internet has taken a heavy toll. Back in 1984, Lovejoy was soon to turn everyone into an armchair “expert,” and the antiques industry was enjoying boom times in the United Kingdom, thanks to the fad for period-style rooms. Who would have believed that, in the same year, a 72-year-old named Mrs. Snowball, buying some groceries from her local Gateshead Tesco online, would sow the seeds for the complete shakeup of the thriving antique shop and auction house market scene. But, Mrs. Snowball’s groceries were the world’s first e-commerce sale, and the new technology would soon be shaking up the world of retail, and antiques and collectables in particular.

Back in the 1980s, the trade was dominated by High Street antique shops and local auctions. The clever dealer who had the right connections and could drive to estates their customer didn’t know about was able to command high prices. Indeed, the antiques profession was very much driven by location; antiques on sale in fashionable and chic areas commanded considerably more money than in less wealthy areas, reflecting the number and spending power of local collectors and tourists to the area. The arrival of the internet broke down such geographical barriers, which had both a positive and a negative impact on traders. The internet increased the number of potential customers greatly, no longer were buyers limited to those who actually visited the shop or auction, yet drove down many prices by increasing the easy availability of items that may have been locally scarce. So what impact has the arrival of the online marketplace, eBay, or sites such as invaluable.co.uk, which links to live auctions, had on the antiques industry and overall has their arrival been a boon or a curse? It seems at the moment that the High Street’s future is turning into a cul-de-sac. The planned changes to Business Rates threaten many High Street retailers with significant

rate rises just as they are battling to take on online retailers. The cap of £50 per month for this year for businesses coming out of Small Business Rate Relief is welcome, but what happens to those businesses in two years’ time? And antique dealers with large premises face a second

challenge - changing customer tastes mean they may be stuck with large amounts of stock and slow turnover thanks to the decline in demand for “brown” furniture. The most recent figures from the Antique Collectors’ Club reveal Victorian and Edwardian furniture have lost more than

two-thirds of their value since 2003, while Georgian and Regency period furniture is worth 30 percent less than 10 years ago. That means there is a lot of unsold stock clogging up High Street premises at a time when it has never been so expensive to maintain large properties.

In contrast, mass-produced smaller 1950s and ’60’s furniture – more likely to be sold online through the likes of eBay, Etsy or even Gumtree than in a traditional High Street antique store - is enjoying something of a boom, due in part to the craze for chic Continued on page 15

created by “Mad Men” and other still-popular period series and movies. The same holds true for auction houses. Who would have predicted back in 1984 that Christie’s historic South Kensington salesroom would be closing in 2017? Last year, Christie’s held 118 online sales, far outnumbering the 56 traditional auctions. Even the flagship Picasso ceramics sale moved online. Back in the 1990s, when I was a regular visitor to Hugo Marsh’s toy collectables division at Christie’s, the South Ken buildings were a treasure trove, groaning at the seams with everything from Old Masters to 18th century sedan chairs. Traditional antiques stores have been similarly impacted. Things started to come to a head following the recession of 2008. To take just one example, Stow in the Wold, once the very epitome of an antiques destination, lost 20 antique shops in the five years leading up to 2010 alone – driven out by increasing rents and sluggish sales of Georgian and Victorian dining and bedroom furniture. It’s a trend that shows little sign of slowing.

The United Kingdom scene is remarkably similar to the U.S. collectables market: where low-end and high-end items continue to sell, but mid-price items are not budging in antique stores. For example, the small town of Hastings in Michigan has lost six antique shops within a few years. Many antique store owners on both sides of the Atlantic have given up on High Street fronts, instead pooling together in less central, cheaper antiques centers, or dispensing with stores altogether. Yet in the U.S., like the U.K., online antiques stores are thriving. The market is growing by 3.5 percent currently. Key to success in this busy market is having a diverse range of customers and the ability to quickly adopt new technology. Of course, internet technology can also be a boon for brick and mortar antiques stores. The right product on their website or online marketplace store will sell as rapidly as on any other traders site - it is the overheads that are the issue. Surviving auction houses have enthusiastically embraced sites such as invaluable.co.uk, which can live stream the auction as it happens. And

embracing the philosophy, if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em, many brick and mortar shops also have an eBay presence. So can the High Street antique store survive the collapse of town center shopping? Those stores with a multichannel approach to sales, positioned in towns that are on the tourist trail and unencumbered with large premises full of heavy, unfashionable furniture do look to have a future. But it means embracing the e-commerce revolution, maintaining their own online site, having an eBay strategy and keeping a flexible approach to changing fashions. What Is Junk Silver? “What’s It Worth” Antique Minute By Mike Ivankovich If you don’t know what “junk silver” is, it could cost you a lot of money. “Junk Silver” refers to 1964-and-earlier U.S. dimes, quarters, and half dollar coins whose value is based on the “Silver Bullion Value” each coin contains. Although most don’t have any real “numismatic” or collector value, they do carry a premium value because each coin is 90 percent pure silver. It was President Lyndon Johnson who opted in 1965 to replace 90 percent silver coins with copper-clad coins containing absolutely no silver. Pre-1965 silver coins quickly disappeared from circulation, either being removed by the government or hoarded by private speculators, and your chances of finding “junk silver” coins in circulation today are slim to none. Today, “junk silver” is

bought-and-sold using the concept of “times face value.” As the spot price of silver changes, the “times face value” changes as well. With silver in the $17-$18/troy ounce range, “10 times face value” is a ballpark value, meaning that a pre-1965 dime is worth $1 and a pre1965 quarter would be worth $2.50. At the same time, a 1965 dime is only worth a dime, and a 1965 quarter is

still only worth a quarter. As the spot price of silver goes up and down, the “times face value” factor changes as well. Junk silver was selling for “35 times face value” some years ago when the price of

silver was considerably higher. Remember also that different dealers pay varying “times face value” prices, so shop your coins around. What’s it worth? Several years ago a family inherited four coffee cans filled with coins and were going to deposit them in the bank the next day for “face value.” We stepped in, identified the junk silver coins, sold them on behalf of the family, and presented them with a check for more than $25,000.
