Our auction is an added incentive for those club members who may be on the fence about traveling.” Coker’s auction will be held in the Sheraton’s third-floor Longford

A tradition will continue as antique and collectible dealers and patrons return to the Centreville Antique Market at the St. JosephGrange Fairgrounds in Centreville, Mich., on Sunday, Aug. 13. Dealers from throughout the Midwest will offer a variety of antiques and collectibles set up in seven buildings and also outdoors under tents. Held rain or shine, the event will feature a massive assortment of country furniture, old toys, vintage clothing, estate jewelry, hunting collectibles, oil lamps, coin-ops, old coins, and everything for the eclectic to the eccentric collectors. Since the rebirth of this Sunday market in 2006, interest and participation by dealers and the public have been nothing short of
sensational. “Investing in antiques for both pleasure and profit has been a mainstay of the business for years and will always continue to be so,” said Bob Zurko of Zurko’s Midwest Promotions. “The early bird gets the worm and the best buys.” The Centreville Market’s Sunday dates for 2017 will be Aug. 13 and Oct. 8 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The admission will be $4. Children under age 16 will be admitted free of charge with an adult. Early buyers can arrive during dealer setup on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. for $10, with the fee good for admission on both days. Food and free parking will be available. For additional information, readers may call Zurko’s Midwest Promotions at 715-526-9769 or visit www.zurkopromotions.com.

The crowds gather for the opening regardless of the weather, knowing this is among the best selection of antiques in New York. Eight giant tents surrounded by many dealers in their own tents will fill the fields for New York state’s largest antiques weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Aug. 18, 19, and 20, creating the Madison-Bouckville Big Field Antiques Show. Now hosted by Allman Promotions of Clinton, N.Y., the show was begun in 1971 as an event to build more business for the local antiques shops, restaurants and hotels by Jock Hengst, who at the time owned Landmark Tavern, the restaurant at the crossroads in Bouckville. Steve Allman has been rebuilding the show with dealers that supply decorators and collectors with fresh-to-the-market antiques. Now
in his fourth year managing the show, but with over 30 years experience in running shows, he has been attracting more dealers back to The Big Field for the long-running annual show. His work will yield more than 300 exhibitors to The Big Field, making it the highlight of Madison Bouckville’s Antiques Week. Shoppers have looked upon The Big Field as the source for some of the best antiques, the place to go for merchandise that is not shop worn but fresh to the marketplace. This is because many of Allman’s exhibitors wait for this show to offer their goods, knowing it will draw the biggest crowds, rain or shine, to Continued on page 4

had a deep involvement in antiques and eastern Tennessee history. “This collection’s origins go back 90 years to antique dealer Frank Hodges Sr., but the bulk of the collection was amassed over a 60-year period by his son, Frank Jr., who was a respected clock expert and knowledgeable antique dealer. The collection has never been displayed publicly and is 100 percent intact. It has never been picked,” said Coker. “Frank Jr. kept the bottles in special cases that were positioned so he could enjoy a view of the best bottles from his favorite chair. Very few visitors were ever invited to the Hodges home to see the collection,” added Coker. “Other dealers may have noticed him buying bottles at auctions, but they

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: A Southern Sojourn
By Peter Seibert This past week, the family headed south to one of our favorite destinations Savannah, Ga. The architecture and food are definitely the big draws for our family. I particularly love the exuberant Victorian architecture that, despite the humid, buggy climate, always seems
to be in great repair. All that being said, I have found Savannah to be a bit barren for the antiques buyer. The shops in the historic area seem to be seeded with lots of very expensive 20th-century Colonial Revival materials. This is in stark contrast to Charleston, S.C., where the shops are filled with English and Oriental antiques of nondescript ages. All in all, as someone who loves Americana, I have found the coastal South to be pretty sparse, to say the least. One thing that has puzzled me is trying to find
where the locals go to buy antiques. I refuse to believe that locals patronize the blue willow reproduction china, refinished Hoosier cabinet, and plastic robot toy shops of downtown. There has to be a place where they go to buy. Well, I finally discovered what may be that shop. Seventh Heaven is an oldtime shop for sure, with lots of period stuff to choose from. The owner has a great selection of real stuff including a modern lamp repair section. Why I bring this shop up is, first, that this place seemed to be where lots of
decorators and collectors in Savannah were going to buy. I witnessed a fair number of folks passing through the doors in my time there, so I am guessing this is the source for many locals who are buying. Second, I have to grit my teeth when I hear some of the comments made by folks coming in looking to buy. I know that every dealer gets frustrated with the folks who try and beat them up on pricing by customers who want something for nothing. In this case, I watched a former New York decorator who came in and told him that she liked
his fire screen but it was “waaayyyy tooooo much money. Nice lady, but rude, and uneducated to say the least. Beating up on a dealer gets you nowhere. I found myself in an awkward position in that shop when the owner and I got into a discussion on a lovely Japanese print. This is not my area of expertise, but to my eye, the subject, a woman at a loom, was a pretty wonderful topic. However, like many of the Japanese prints that I have seen over the years, it had been badly sunbaked. The owner asked me what I thought and I said I liked it.
He then point-blank asked me if I thought it was faded. While I appreciated his honesty and willingness to ask me such a question, I felt bad in saying that I did think it was too faded. He agreed in a totally friendly manner, and we talked about how many of those prints were put out in the sunshine and baked within an inch of their lives. It was a good conversation but I really hate giving opinions about other dealers’ items. Anyhow, this is a great shop, and it rates up there in my book as a definite destination when I come back to Savannah.

Schiffer Publishing Ltd. would like to introduce “This Day in Collecting History: A Year of Art, Memorabilia, and Other Treasures Sold,” by Mike McLeod and Marla McLeod. A calendar year’s worth of historical events are presented along with auctions of related collectibles in this fun and informative compilation. The dayby-day historical entries and corresponding sales are
arranged chronologically from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. Many of the sales, both public and private, were for fabulous sums. The Cowardly Lion’s costume from “The Wizard of Oz” auctioned for $3-plus million. Joan of Arc’s ring sold for almost $425,000. The most expensive album wasn’t by the Beatles, but by Wu-Tang Clan, whose “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin” sold for a reported $2 million.
