Set Of Books Documenting Voyages Of Captain James Cook Sell For $11,000 Summer Catalog Sale By Bunch Auctions Was Held June 28

A set of books by John Hawkesworth documenting the three voyages of Captain James Cook to the Pacific went for $11,000. Bunch Auctions presented over 700 lots at its annual summer catalog sale on June 28, at its showroom in Chadds Ford, Pa. The buyers appeared undeterred by the early summer heat - the sale proved to be strong across all categories. Furniture was one of the largest portions of the day and included a diverse array of home decor from various eras. A new generation of younger retail buyers helped prices for contemporary designers, including Ethan Allen, Maitland Smith and Galimberti Lino, to exceed estimates and reveal some of the changing tastes in this market. One such piece was a gold tone Chesterfield sofa that brought $1,500 (est. $200-$400) and a modern Steinway grand piano that sold for $9,000. More traditional tastes were highlighted by a painted Dutch cupboard ($2,700) and two Continued on page 3

An extremely rare Wallace Nutting hand-colored photo titled “Shoeing the Gray Mare” sold for $4,180 at Michael Ivankovich’s May 13 auction. The photo featured a blacksmith shoeing a white horse outside a barn. A l t h o u g h Ivankovich had sold a similar black and white picture many years ago, he had never seen a hand-colored version of it. To further add to its rarity, it was signed “With Compliments - Wallace Nutting,” which is something most collectors had never seen before. Other Nutting highlights from this sale included, “Wine Carrier, Ravello” ($1,100); “The Meeting Place” ($770); and “Six Bullseye Door, Leonard House,” selling for $660. Wallace Nutting furniture highlights included a #619 Crane bracket table ($825); #161c joint stool ($385) and #402 a continuous

Several of the top-selling works by Thompson included, “Toiler of the Sea” ($1,980); “The Clam Digger” ($1,100); and “A Daughter of Wadsworth,” which brought $1,045. And this sale’s offering of 140 choice selections from manufacturers including Colt, Gwyn & Campbell, Remington, and Marlin - among many other national and international manufacturers - will not disappoint. Collectors are certain to get into heated battle over lot 281, a documented, untouched Civil War Henry Repeating rifle, estimated at $25,000 to $35,000. This remarkable piece of history was manufactured in 1863 and belonged to Gideon Perry Jolly of Hardinsburg, Ky., a member of the home guard during the Civil War. It is accompanied by a letter of provenance from his family, as well as four-piece oak and nickel cleaning rod. This sale deserves a round of applause for its amazing selection of modern handguns, with over 260 revolvers and pistols on offer. Lot 301, a superb, all original boxed Smith & Wesson Second Model single shot pistol, is in a class by itself. This rare example was only manufactured from 1905 to 1909 and is estimated at $2,500 to $3,500. According to our catalogers, “This is the only example of this fine pistol we have ever seen that is accompanied by its original purple hinged box with proper tan end label.” It’s also off to the races with this sale’s remarkable selections of Colt revolvers. Highlights include lot 315, an exquisite presentation grade Colt Single Action Army revolver with ivory grips and Helfricht style engraving which is estimated at $3,500 to $5,500 and lot 319, an engraved and silver plated Colt First Generation Single Action Army revolver, estimated at $5,000 to $7,500. It always amazes me when I go into a collector’s home and they have beautiful rugs, furniture, silver, china, etc. and then the ugliest, cheapest prints hanging on the wall. Conversely, I have been in houses where they have incredibly elaborate and beautiful artwork and some of the tackiest cheapest furniture. It gets me thinking about that disconnect between art collectors and antique collectors. Developing an eye for fine art, in my opinion, is difficult and requires real honing. In particular, if you come from a historian or antique collector basis. Why? Because if you place history or context over a painting to the exclusion of the art, then you often can have a fascinating but ugly work. This is where I think the myth of folk art paintings comes into play. It’s the case where as a collector you can fall in love with a painting of a river with a steamboat and a castle and animals and a soldier in it and thus see it as a historical piece. Artistically, one can then turn around and

see that the work is sloppily painted and lacking perspective but it does have all the bells and whistles of context. So, with the wave of a magic wand, it becomes a masterpiece of folk art. Instead, it is just an ugly painting that has all the elements designed to catch someone’s attention. The flip side to this are the collectors of paintings who fail to understand the nature of the antiques and art market. These are the folks who spend ridiculous sums of money on paintings that have absolutely no real value except what the gallery places upon them. I know this sounds harsh but having lived out west, I saw firsthand how a painting by a very second tier artist could, with the right promotion, be pushed to exalted heights. A few years ago, I was working with a colleague who is an auctioneer. We were in a mainline Philadelphia household that had some choice early items. The son of the owner was happy for us to have the Chippendale desk and the clock but then really wanted us to see his collection of modern art. I am quite agnostic when it comes to modern and contemporary art so I looked at the works to see if they would do well. They were hideous. Yes, they were abstractions, but far removed from the original concept of

Train And Railroad Accessories Collection Soars “This was a collectors’ sale,” said Jeanne Bertoia, commenting on the April 9 auction of Jerry and Nina Greene’s personal toy train collection. The prized trains and rare accessories amassed over several decades by the Philadelphia couple were well known within the train community, but it was still a big step for Bertoia’s to auction the treasured collection with no reserve. “Jerry and Nina were confident that we had done our job This Marklin tunnel with mountain castle tower, railed base, hand-painted, 29in reaching collectors world- by-13-inches, sold for $84,000. wide, so they were comfortable with having no reserve on tunnels and bridges that just was 382 percent of its high estianything in the sale,” said don’t come up at auction. The European contingent took in a robust $1.2 million, that piece. Lot 407, a Voltamp trolley, sold in the gallery for $11,400 (est. $2,500-$3,000), while Lot 643, a Lionel power and trailer trolley, went to an internet bidder for $20,400 – five times the high estimate. Later, the internet buyer visited Bertoia’s in person to pick up both the trolley and Lot 662, an Ives flatbed circus car with wagon he had won for $7,800. A gentleman who was bidding on rare Carlisle & Finch productions prevailed on multiple items, including Lot 653, a summer trolley, $5,700; and Lot 630, passenger cars, $3,900. All of his purchases were acquired for the Carlisle & Finch museum. Other train highlights included Lot 221, a Bing Jupiter set with provenance from the Ward Kimball collection, $48,000 (est. $25,000-$30,000); and Lot 452, a Marklin threepiece train that sold to a European phone bidder for an above-estimate $27,000. In terms of sales statistics, 239 lots representing 35 percent of the auction were sold to buyers at the gallery, while 277 lots were purchased via the internet through LiveAuctioneers. Ninety-five lots went to absentee bidders and 92 to phone competitors. It was also noted that the items of highest value sold primarily to live and phone bidders. “The wonderful thing about this auction was that so many people were able to buy. There were some record prices and then again at the other end of the spectrum, there were some great buys. Everyone left with a bag and a smile on their face,” said Jeanne Bertoia. Other highlights in the selection will include a wide-ranging selection of important posters from the early days of Hollywood’s Silent Film era that have never come up for auction before. “Rarely do we get a collection of such early and significant film posters in such quantity as this wonderful group of 100-year-old posters, many of which are unrestored and in an unused state,” said Grey Smith, Director of Vintage Posters at Heritage Auctions. “It’s not going too far to suggest that this well may be the best selection of these types of posters Heritage has ever offered.”
