His holdings also include Mexican and fine jewelry, folk and fine art, textiles, baskets, and furniture. Dr. Richman, an ardent lifelong collector, is the past chair of the graduate program in American Studies at Pennsylvania State UniversityHarrisburg and has held various positions at the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission. In addition to authoring or co-authoring more than 20 books, he has contributed to over 180 articles and reviews to professional journals. He has

On July 29, one of God’s most beautiful creations was called home, and heaven will now be even more perfect. Beth Brubaker Funk, 61, beloved wife of Glenn R. Funk, Elizabethtown, passed away peacefully at Hershey Medical Center. She is also survived by two sisters, Doris Jean Boltz, of Berwick, Pa., and Arlene Robinson, of Bloomsburg, Pa., married to Gordon; and two brothers, Paul, of Belton, Mo., married to Lynn; and Dean, of Hollidaysburg, Pa., married to Grace; a stepson, Steve Funk, of Dover, Pa., married to Dawn; a sister-inlaw, Patty, of Millerton, Pa., wife of Bill; seven grandchildren; one greatgrandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews. Beth was predeceased by her parents, Clyde and Pauline Soyster Brubaker of Hollidaysburg, Pa., and a stepson, Jason Funk, of Klamath Falls, Ore. Beth was employed by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., on the staff of Antiques & Auction News, for over 30 years. Beth was a graduate of Kutztown University, with

such a collection, I would offer a few suggestions. 1) Think of their interests and how yours can blend with that. If you like china and they like contemporary design, then blend the two. 2) Buy good quality and unique items. They will hold interest and value much longer than others. 3) Keep a record of and pass on information about the values of the pieces. This is important for any number of reasons, not the least of which is to help your children make good decisions about the items. 4) Attach no strings to the items. If they want to sell them when they become of age, then it is their choice and not yours. As collectors, we have a great legacy to share, and I encourage you to start now in building a collection for the future.

One recent evening, I unpacked, cleaned and repacked two boxes that I had set aside for my daughters. As a collector, I think it is important to prepare things for the next generation. So, years ago, I began collections for my two daughters. Things that were special to me, to the family and hopefully to them someday. I also let them know, and put it in writing, that if they did not want the

verboten reading in Harrisburg for many years, as O’Hara patterned many of the characters on real-life figures in Pennsylvania’s capital city. My first-edition in dust jacket was found in Vermont and has been tucked away for my daughter for a long time. My younger daughter is too young to really understand, but I have set aside interesting and oddball books for her. She is my quirky one ‌ even at age 6 ‌ and so I am starting to put things away for her. So in her box is an autographed Neil Young tour book, a rare first-edition book on headhunters and several early Harrisburg imprints (since she was born there). I also have begun to tuck art books into the collection. The work of the late artist Edward Gorey are particularly fun, and so some autographed books of his have joined the collection. Building such legacy collections are great fun for us as collectors and hopefully will serve to inspire younger collectors to embrace the past as we have. If you are considering

collection, they could sell it and use the money for what they wanted. So what are their collections? My older daughter is named for my mother, who passed away when my daughter was a baby. Mom had gone to school in Vermont and told the story of hearing a tall man with a schock of white hair get up to speak to her class. The man was Robert Frost, and thus was born a collection of Robert Frost poetry and other items that are now set aside for my older daughter. The other items that I set aside for her are things that connect her to her own past. Tucked into the box is a copy of John O’Hara’s “A Rage to Live.� This book was

The recent acquisition of Antoine Vollon’s 1873 watercolor “View of Dieppe Harbor,� the gift of Dr. Carol Forman Tabler in memory of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Alexander A. Forman III, has inspired a presentation of landscape drawings and oil studies from the Frick’s permanent collection. Ranging in date from the 1500s to the late 19th century, the selection includes rarely exhibited works by Rembrandt, Claude, Corot, Whistler, and others. Mount Gretna has been a popular summer destination since the late 19th century. Situated in Lebanon County, Pa., the region was once a dense forest of chestnut trees. In earlier times, the expansive forest provided charcoal for the nearby Cornwall Furnace that once forged canons for Washington’s Army during the Revolution. In 1885, the Conewago Creek was dammed, and Lake Conewago was formed for ideal swimming conditions, enhancing its recreational appeal. Also, in 1885, the Pennsylvania National Guard began a 50-year annual encampment in the area, and a military branch post office operated for a short time (the Guard left in 1933). The regrown region quickly became regarded as a summer picnic and

Sheraton in Scranton, Pa., in addition to the Annual Antiques in the Park, held in Memorial Park in Carbondale, Pa. “We were so pleased with the successful turnout at the new venue in the newly redesigned Four Points at the Sheraton in Scranton, complete with easy access, right off Route 81, with convenient setup and the elegant and spacious banquet hall and ballroom, which easily accommodated the 40-plus dealers we had from five states,” said Chris Glinton. “The dealers made use of the hotel discounted rooms, and many patrons also stayed the full weekend at the hotel and were grateful for the added convenience. We are so pleased with the success of our ventures, and the feedback was great,” added Glinton.

“This was the first antique show to be held in Scranton in the last 15 years,” said Paul Daugevelo. The show was held on June 12, 13, and 14. The preview party from 6 to 8 p.m. on June 12 had over 100 people in attendance. Each showgoer received

weekend passes, which benefitted the Lackawanna Historical Society. This show will take place again on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Nov. 6, 7, and 8. A preview party from 6 to 8 p.m. will also be held again. Appraisal clinics for the Great Summer Antiques Expo were managed by Maggie Windchester, who was available both days from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. She will be back for the November show. The Four Points by Sheraton is located at 300 Meadow Ave. Take the Moosic Street exit from Route 81 coming south and the River Street exit from Route 81 coming north. Ros-Al Floral Antiques and Events also produced the fourth annual Antiques in the Park in the historic Pioneer City of Carbondale, Pa., which is also a Route 6

Heritage Community. It took place on June 27 in Memorial Park, situated on the town’s main street, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in cooperation with the city of Carbondale for their celebration of the Patriotic Fourth of July. Despite rain, stalwart patrons came out in droves to support the event. Another Antiques in the Park show will be held on Saturday, Aug. 22, in conjunction with the annual Pioneer Nights celebration held every summer in the town. The event includes a passenger train run from Scranton to Carbondale. Live bands and a variety of food will augment the occasion. Ros-Al Floral Antiques and Events will also donate a portion of the proceeds from both Antiques in the Park events to the Carbondale Historical Society. Daugevelo urges vendors

to send in dealer applications soon for both the Antiques in the Park show and Four Points show. 30th Anniversary Plans Announced To Celebrate The DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum approximately 170 objects, which will open on Saturday, Sept. 12. Featured in the exhibition will be many objects never before on view in the galleries that have been acquired since the museum began actively building its American silver collection in 2009. Highlights of the exhibition will range from the typical to the exceedingly rare and date from a circa 1530 ingot of silver to items made circa 1835. As Colonial Williamsburg’s collection features an extensive array of early English keyboards, and the Wallace Museum’s ongoing exhibition, “Changing Keys: Keyboard Instruments for America, 1700-1830” is a perennial favorite of visitors, “Music in the Museum” is another program that museum goers will enjoy there during the anniversary celebration month. Live music, focused in September on “Changing Keys,” will be played in the museum galleries while guests are touring. On Saturday, Sept. 26, at 4 p.m., the premiere of “A Rich and Varied Culture: Music from the Early South” will be held in the Hennage Auditorium at the Art Museums. Inspired by the groundbreaking exhibition, “A Rich and Varied Culture: The Material World of the Early South,” which opened last year to critical acclaim at the Wallace Museum, this program celebrates the culturally and ethnically diverse region, which ultimately defined the distinctive style of the early South. Henley Fork (Brian Forsman, Barry Trott and Lynn Trott) will perform a program of Southern music from the late 1700s through the 1850s that will feature dance tunes for the fiddle and banjo, Stephen Foster parlor songs and favorites from the wide-ranging cultures that made up the musical tapestry in the “Era of Good Feelings.” Coinciding with the Smithsonian Museum Free Day, admission to the Art Museums and this event will be free of charge. The 30 days of September 2015 in Colonial Williamsburg will be devoted to celebrating the 30th anniversary of the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum, one of the Art Museums of Colonial Williamsburg, and the anniversary plans promise to offer programs and events that are evocative, informative and entertaining, culminating in a gala event on Wednesday, Sept. 30. “For three decades, the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum has produced an unbroken stream of innovative exhibitions that use the foundation’s remarkable collections to explore the history and culture of our nation,” said Ronald L. Each Tuesday at 10:30 a.m., museum visitors can join “CW Collects” to learn about how and why objects have been collected for Colonial Williamsburg over the years and will discover the circumstances that led to the creation of the DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Museum. On Fridays at 10:30 a.m., guides will lead visitors on an exploration of the hidden stories behind the objects on display in the Wallace Museum in “Backstory.” This tour will include looking at paintings, ceramics, textiles and more to discover who made the object and why, as well as how, it found its way into the Colonial Williamsburg collection. Both tours last 45 minutes and are included with museum admission. In 1939, the specter of global conflict had yet to reach American shores. With the Great Depression receding into memory, the country looked eagerly ahead. What would the future hold? Well, for one thing, the

dazzling New York World’s Fair. Billed as the “Dawn of a New Day,� the 1939-40 Fair promised its 45 million visitors a fascinating glimpse of the “world of tomorrow.� One lucky attendee was Chicago career gal Mildred Anderson. In September of 1939, Anderson saw an ad for an “All-Expense-Paid EightDay Deluxe Tour� offered by Powers Tours (“America’s Old Reliable�). For just $49 (yes, you read that right), Mildred had quite a trip in store: Niagara Falls, Manhattan, Philadelphia, Atlantic City, Washington, D.C., Mount Vernon, the Cumberland Mountains, and the star attraction: the New York World’s Fair! Noted the Powers brochure, “Here you

will experience a world of wonders!� Anderson agreed wholeheartedly. Her “Officially

Licensed New York World’s Fair Scrap Book� is jampacked with memory-joggers: tickets, flyers, programs, napkins, matchbooks, placemats, sugar packets, soap wrappers, stationery,

maps, menus, coasters, bottle labels, pencils, and even the occasional dried leaf. She also typed out 13 singlespaced, legal-sized pages detailing her journey, from boarding the train in Chicago

Anderson was properly impressed, writing, “The floor on which we stood revolved, denoting the cycle of one day. As we looked below, we saw a well-laid out city, with factories and business centers in the middle, and the homes in the suburban districts. As the floor continued to revolve, the light faded, it grew darker, and the stars appeared. We heard people singing, and saw them on a screen marching happily. It was a thrilling exhibit, a perfect city, all of its people happy and

into eight days), she had to pick and choose. Among her fair favorites: the Lagoon of Nations (“Oh the lights! The fireworks! The waters!”) and the Telephone Building (“I had a test made of my telephone voice!”). The IBM Pavilion prompted some wishful thinking (“Wonder if I’ll ever have one of those electric typewriters?”), while the Life Savers Parachute Jump prompted chills (“You wouldn’t catch me on that!”) Tops on her list: the spectacular Billy Rose Aquacade, starring “Tarzan” (Johnny Weissmuller). “This was a beautiful water carnival of

swimming and stunts. In one number, the swimmers wore swim caps which must have been covered with phosphorus. When the lights were turned off, the caps glowed in the dark,” wrote Anderson. In 1964, 25 years after the first New York World’s Fair, a second fair blossomed in the same location, and a new “world of tomorrow” beckoned. Fair visitors again poured into New York (although $49 tour packages were definitely a thing of the past), filling scrapbooks with their own pieces of time.
