MORPHY’S AWARDED RIGHT TO AUCTION KYLE D. MOORE PETROLIANA COLLECTION an Morphy, founder and president of Morphy Auctions, recently announced that his firm has been chosen to auction the prestigious Kyle D.
Moore petroliana collection, now owned by a private investor. According to Morphy, it is the most valuable collection ever to pass through Morphy’s doors, having an estimated value of $15,000,000 to $20,000,000. Containing more than 900 gas globes, 150 vintage gas pumps and 2,000 petroleum-related advertising signs, the collection was amassed over a 40-year period by Moore, a cable TV entrepreneur who died in March 2014. Eight years prior to his death, Moore sold the entire collection to an Oklahoma businessman. “Even though the collection belongs to another individual, it is so famous within the hobby, it is still widely known by the nickname ‘Kyle’s Collection,’” said Dan Matthews, head of Morphy Auctions’ Petroliana Department. “After the collection was purchased, the buyer decided it should remain at Kyle Moore’s house. It was a wise move, since the collection was purchased as an investment and was secure This Musgo Gasoline porcelain advertising and well cared for right where it was.” sign is from the Kyle D. Subsequent auctions will be held in 2016, starting with a January session. “We are honored to be handling such a prestigious and highly regarded collection,” said Morphy, whose Lancaster County, Pa., company holds world auction records in many categories, including antique advertising. “The market for petroliana is red hot right now, and the Kyle Moore collection is the best of the best in terms of quality, rarity and condition. We’re expecting a very exciting series of sales.” Auction items will be on display at Morphy’s gallery approximately 30 days before each auction session as well as online at www.morphyauctions.com. SHOPS & CENTERS Collector Anecdotes And Antics I Thought It Would Be Worth More and 10 being for the beloved Super Nintendo. The collection was discovered by an older gentleman who stated it was kept in his basement and originally used by his children, who are now grown and have since moved out of the house. This happens more than one would think. Contrary to popular belief, not every adult wants to collect the objects of their youth. The man offered the systems and games to his adult sons, and both declined to take the items off his hands, with one
actually calling the collection junk. The man confided in me that he had watched an episode of “Pawn Stars” in which two rare Nintendo games given out at the 1990 Nintendo World Championships were being offered for close to $30,000. I knew I would have quite a job when I explained to the man that close to 90 percent of all video games are not even worth a fraction of their original retail price! The games shown on “Pawn Stars” were extremely limited releases (never commercially available and with
copies in North America alone when it was released back in 1987. A near mint cartridge only copy of “The Legend of Zelda” is worth about $20 to $25, nothing more. Ironically, that is also a very high retail price. I generally sell this game on eBay for $17.95 plus $4 shipping. It’s common, but a classic and in demand as a result. The man showed me a listing for a factory sealed copy graded by VGA (Video Game Authority) in near mint condition that sold for close to (Continued on page 6)

In the interest of full disclosure, I no longer frequent garage sales and flea markets on a weekly basis. I attend only about two flea markets a month. I’m more involved in the auction scene. In a way, I actually miss the hectic, frantic pace of treasure hunting in the trenches. Judging from what I have seen at the few flea markets I attend and from what others in the trade have told me, the overall market has changed. While there are a lot of great finds at flea markets across the country, some have become a dumping ground of basic household junk while sellers hold onto what they consider to be valuable treasures. Ironically, a lot of these items are nothing special, and most hold no real monetary value at all. This lament is happening all too often in an age where “Pawn Stars” and “American Pickers” are just a click of a remote (or mouse on the computer) away. Recently, I was asked to help evaluate a classic Nintendo video game collection spanning several
generations of systems from the original NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) to the Super Nintendo. All the games were cartridge only with no manuals or boxes, and everything was in good to excellent condition. Both systems were complete with no boxes and in used condition. If I was to rate everything included on a one-toten scale with ten being the absolute best condition possible, I would rate this lot a firm seven. Included with both systems were about 30 game cartridges, with 20 being for the original NES

numbers in the hundreds, not millions). Reluctant to trust me, the man did what every seller does and quickly showed me some eBay auctions to verify his claim that these items were worth a lot of money. As any good “expert” (I use the term loosely) I had to explain the reasoning and rationale behind those asking prices. The first game the man pointed to was “The Legend of Zelda” for the original NES. It has a unique goldcolored game cartridge and sold well over 10 million

Monthly Display Showcases Automobiles Collectors Forum At Old Sturbridge Village At The Grist Mill Antiques Center Will Explore Topic Of Ever since the first Model T rolled off the assembly line, Americans have been in love with automobiles, and some of the most lasting memories have been made in them. Kids could hardly wait for the newfound freedom when they received their driver’s permit. Countless nights were spent at drive-ins, and taking road trips during summer vacation seemed to be an integral part of the fabric of American life. Today, that nostalgic time is revisited at the Grist Mill Antiques Center in Pemberton, N.J. Throughout the month of August, the shop is celebrating with its special display on the automobile. Showcased are vintage license plates and hub caps, hood ornament and gear shift knobs, road maps and car manuals, oil cans and tools, advertisements and signs, as well as many other automobile or oil and gas company collectibles. Shoppers will find that there’s always something
going on at the Grist Mill Antiques Center. The last Wednesday of each month, the store hosts a Scavenger Hunt. Lists will be handed out at 5 p.m., and the person who finds the most items by 8 p.m. will be awarded a prize. Light refreshments will be served. To sign up for the center’s weekly email, visit them on Facebook and check out the website to find out about special sales and events. The Grist Mill will hold its semi-nnual flea market on Sunday, Oct. 18, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Anyone wishing to participate may contact Barbara Lind for more information at 609-726-1588 or via email at theplace@grist millantiques.com. The multi-dealer shop is located at 127 Hanover St. in Pemberton and is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours until 8 p.m. each Wednesday. For more information, visit www.gristmillantiques.com.
Collecting In America Collectors of all types, young and old to experienced and amateur, have undeniably shaped the identities of many American museums and historic sites since the 19th century. Many of these special places, such as Bayou Bend, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, The Biltmore, The Henry Ford Museum, and Old Sturbridge Village began as private collections of objects assembled by individuals passionate about art, furniture, automobiles, clocks or whatever their area of interest was. Presented in conjunction with the ongoing exhibition “Kindred Spirits: A.B. Wells, C. Malcolm Watkins and the Origins of Old Sturbridge Village,” the 2015 Collectors Forum at Old Sturbridge Village will take place on Saturday, Oct. 24, and will examine collecting in America, from its roots in the early 19th century through the present day. Participants will benefit from enriching lectures and workshops uncovering the origins of collecting, as well as the influences,
trends, prominent personalities, and some of the challenges collectors face in today’s market. Jane Nylander, president emerita of Historic New England and chair of Old Sturbridge Village’s Collections Committee, said, “This Forum offers both a unique opportunity to compare the activities and interests of some of New England’s first and most influential collectors with those of active young collectors and dealers today, as well as a cautionary tale about fakes from one of the country’s most respected curators. If you have any interest at all in antique collecting, you won’t want to miss this fascinating event.” The day-long program will take place in the Fuller Conference Center at Old Sturbridge Village, and the $135 registration fee will include admission to all lectures, workshops, a lunch, and a one-year membership to the Village. For current OSV members, the registration fee will be $85. For more information, call 508-347-0237 or visit www.osv.org.

Collector Anecdotes (Continued from page 3)
$1,000. When I explained this to the man, he got belligerent and tried to tell me he thought I knew the value of these items. I then proceeded to show him completed eBay listings for a near mint copy of “The Legend of Zelda.” As the man went through the listings, he saw prices ranging from $15 to $30 with shipping, and he began shaking his head. “Mine are much more valuable than this,” he proclaimed. Stunned, I asked him to explain to me the difference between his loose gold-colored “Legend of the Zelda” game and the one that was seen in the completed listings having closed for $25. He could not. I then explained to him the true value of all his games. While he expected his collection to be worth thousands, in all honesty the complete collection with both systems and 30 games was only worth about $250, and I would agree to pay him $150 cash. I spent almost an hour explaining my pricing and how I came up with that figure. I then said something that only those in the retail side of the antiques and collectibles business truly understand. That statement was merely this, “I just spent over two hours of my time with you, and we have yet to agree on a sale. I understand you see that I am making 100 dollars off this deal and think that is substantial, but think of it this way. How many deals do I have to go on and share my knowledge at a cost of my time and travelling expenses
before I agree to a deal?” Most dealers in the collectibles business make a little over minimum wage when all is said and done. The man accepted the deal, and I parted all items out for a total sum of $285. I wasn’t far off on my estimate, as expected. I’ll spare you the details on my time cleaning and testing the items, my time dealing with eBay buyers, the listing of the actual items in question, and the eBay and PayPal fees that have increased substantially over the years. In conclusion, we are at a very interesting time in the antiques and collectibles hobby. Never before has so much information (the accuracy of which varies widely) been available to the average person who may have absolutely no knowledge of the antiques and collectibles trade. This is causing some interesting issues within the trade, and I see no signs of this trend changing anytime soon. Dealers and collectors need to understand that the average seller outside of the trade has little understanding as to how the business truly works and needs to have more patience when dealing with the general public. The general public has to understand that reality television, regardless as to whether it centers around love, celebrities, or antiques, is exactly that— television based somewhat on reality. Unfortunately, it is the reality part that appears to be misleading. This topic will be explored in greater depth in several upcoming articles. Thanks for reading!

Classic X-Men Original Art Provides Rarity At Heritage Auctions The original John Byrne and Terry Austin double splash page art from X-Men #137 (Marvel, 1980) “The Fate of the Phoenix!” is arguably the most famous image from the greatest and most popular XMen story. It is expected to bring $150,000+ when it comes to auction on Thursday, Aug. 27, as the centerpiece of Heritage Auctions’Aug. 27, 28, and 29 Comics and Comic Art Signature Auction. “Fans never expected the cover blurb of ‘Phoenix Must
Die!’ to be accurate, but that’s where this comic arc shockingly ended,” said Todd Hignite, vice president of Heritage Auctions. “This two page spread featuring Cyclops, Jean Grey (aka Marvel Girl/Phoenix), the Beast, Angel, Nightcrawler, Wolverine, Storm, Colossus, Professor X, Lilandra, and Gladiator is one of the most memorable splash pages of all time,” said Hignite. Chris Claremont (writer), John Byrne (co-plotter/penciler), and Terry Austin (inker)
turned in some careeraltering signature work on this title, and much of it culminated in this story, elements of which even made it into the movie “X2: X-Men United.” In short, this is one of the greatest full-team images of the X-Men ever, directly from the heart of one of the most acclaimed runs in comic book history. Hake’s July Auction Hit $1.2 Million With Powerhouse Pop Culture, Sports And Political Rarities set of large Old King Cole store displays replicating Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, which sold near the top of its estimate range for $18,075. Hake’s recorded bids totaling more than $250,000 on the 120 featured lots from the late Ken “Franco” Toscanini’s Superman collection. Toscanini’s vast holding incorporated not only comics, but also premiums, licensed merchandise, movie promos, original art and more, all in crisp, beautiful condition.

An original-release 1941-43 Paramount Pictures/Fleischer Cartoons linen-mounted “Superman” poster also flew past its pre-sale estimate to settle at $17,395, while a Superman Paint Set entered with a $700-$1,000 estimate produced a surprising $10,755 payday. Bidders also swarmed all over the vintage concert posters in the sale. One of

Examples would be the Superman Golden Age Christmas comic book rack topper produced in 1940 to promote eight National (DC) Comics titles. signed by King, or possibly for any artifact signed by King. Over the years, political memorabilia of all types have performed exceptionally well in Hake’s sales. In the July 14 session, a Taft and Sherman presidential/vice presidential jugate picturing the two 1908 election candidates with Miss Liberty was bid to an aboveestimate price of $5,605. Impeccable provenance went a long way to fire bidder interest in several private collections, including the career archive of Negro League and multinational Hall of Famer Martin Dihigo (Cuban, 1906-71). The archive included Dihigo’s prized collection of 192324 Gutierrez and B i l l i k e n cigarette/cigar baseball cards, which he began at age 17. It sold within estimate for $25,745. Hake’s Americana rang up yet another seven-figure total on July 14, 15, and 16 with its $1.2 million online/absentee auction #215, which featured outstanding private collections of pop culture antiques and collectibles. Bidding competition was fierce, and many record prices were set across a broad range of categories. A 1958 hardcover first edition of “Stride Toward Freedom,” which its author, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., signed and personally inscribed to Chief Justice Earl Warren, made a powerful statement in the opening session when it sold for $49,335 against an estimate of $20,000-$35,000 (all prices quoted include 15 percent buyer’s premium). The historically important tome was the centerpiece of the political memorabilia section. “The price paid for the book did not surprise us. It is a historic artifact of the highest magnitude and truly a one-of-a-kind piece,” said Alex Winter, president of Hake’s Americana. “Both men associated with the book were integral figures in the Civil Rights Movement, and the importance of their legacy cannot be overstated. For this important work of literature to be signed by the author, Dr. King, to Chief Justice Warren places it in its

the same buyer in China. A large and rare 18th-century Chinese bronze Buddha measuring 27 inches tall and 16.5 inches wide was hotly contested on the Internet and sold for $25,200. The first of many pieces of blue and white porcelain that sold crossed the podium as Lot #8115. The Chinese blue and white Mei vase with Qing Qianlong mark was decorated with five clawed dragons amongst clouds over waves and stood 13.75-inches in height. It sold for $22,200, while a Chinese blue and white moon vase with the Qianlong mark sold for $20,400. “I was very pleased with the sale; it was an exciting sale. I was especially pleased with the level of interest on all the top lots,” said Bob Yang, Kaminski’s Asian specialist. Other items that sold well included a Chinese carved zitan

was particularly well-attended, and the auction itself had many new buyers in attendance. The auction started strong with heated bidding coming from the floor and all three Internet platforms. Chinese porcelain continued to be a very strong category, with the many blue and white porcelain entries seeing particularly strong interest. Surprisingly, the two top lots of the sale were a Chinese military sword with a scabbard of metal and wood and an intricately carved jade handle embellished with a jade bead with gold chasing and tassel and a Chinese carved white jade seal featuring intricate carving on the sides of gilt calligraphy, a Greek key scroll border on the top edge and a doubled headed mythical beast with horns and bulging eyes. The sword sold for $92,400 and the jade seal for $90,000 to

Ask The Appraiser #3
Mary Pat Answer: Dear Mary Pat, You inherited some lovely plates. Your gilt rimmed plates have two marks on the back. The first mark identifies the
plates as having been made by the J.S. Maier & Co. (Poschetzau Porcelain Factory) between 1939 and 1945. This company was located in Poschetzau, Bohemia (now Bozicany, Czech Republic) and was in business from 1890 to circa 1945. The second mark indicates that the plates were retailed at Ovington’s, a store in New York that offered high quality fine china, glassware and other items. The store, originally called Ovington Brothers, was started in the late 1800s by three brothers. The store continued to be run by family after the last brother passed away in 1909, and sometime after 1920 the name was shortened to
Greensboro, N.C., that currently stocks over 12 million pieces of china, crystal and silver in 400,000 patterns from current to antique. A quick search of patterns listed under J.S. Maier, Ovington’s and Tirschenreuth unfortunately did not yield any matches to either of your sets; however Replacements does offer a pattern identification service and will also work to locate pieces in your pattern once identified. While at auction you might expect to pay $5 to $10 per plate, on Replacements be prepared to spend up to $30 to $40 per plate. Replacements, Inc. can be reached at www.replace ments.com or 1-800REPLACE. Question #2: Attached are photos of a 34-star Lincoln mourning flag from our family. We have not placed a value on it as yet, as there really isn’t anyone in our area that can appraise it. Pat and Mary
The Met Announces Record-Breaking 6.3 Million Annual Attendance Thomas P. Campbell, director and CEO of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, recently announced that a record 6.3 million people from the five boroughs of New York City, the local Tri-State area, across the United States, and around the world, visited the museum during the fiscal year that ended on June 30. This is the highest visitorship since the Met began tracking admission statistics more than 40 years ago, and it is the fourth year in a row that attendance exceeded 6 million. The total includes visitors both at the main building on Fifth Avenue and at The Cloisters museum and gardens, the branch of the Metropolitan Museum in upper Manhattan devoted to the art and architecture of the Middle Ages.
“This year’s record-breaking numbers demonstrate the ongoing enthusiasm for the Met’s exhibitions, collections, and programs. For the second full year, we have been open seven days a week to the public, and last September we unveiled our welcoming new Fifth Avenue plaza. In the galleries, we continue to present a spectrum of exhibitions, from small, focused installations to major international loan shows like the current ‘China: Through the Looking Glass.’ And several months from now we will launch our expanded modern and contemporary art programming at The Met Breuer. These and many other new projects carry forward our mission to collect, study, preserve, and make accessible to
our visitors the full sweep of art history, from ancient times to the present, said Campbell. The Met continues to be a popular destination for local visitors, and it is also New York’s most visited tourist attraction for domestic as well as international audiences. Visitors from the five boroughs of New York City comprised 26 percent of the museum’s visitorship, while New York City and Tri-State visitors together comprised 41 percent of the total. International visitors from 189 countries visited the main building and The Cloisters this past fiscal year, accounting for 38 percent of the annual visitorship. Since its introduction to the American market in 1949, the distinctive blue and white dinnerware depicting Currier & Ives scenes has remained one of the Royal China Company’s most popular lines. An essential resource for all levels of collectors, this book is the first full color reference to document the Currier & Ives dinnerware and its richly nostalgic American scenes. Each of the nearly 150 photos includes details of the shape and the size of the piece, describes the scene, and provides a value. History is also provided about Currier & Ives, the source of this dinnerware’s decorative art, and about the Royal China Company. While the most popular color is blue, Currier & Ives dinnerware can also be
found in other colors. This soft cover, 112-page guide covers all details the connoisseur needs to know. “Currier & Ives Dinnerware is authored by Debbie Coe and Randy Coe. It was published by Schiffer Publishing. To learn more, visit www.schifferbooks.com.

Question #1: My parents received these gold plates as a wedding gift in 1951. I am curious as to who the maker was. They also received these blue rimmed plates as well. I have 5. Two have a purple tulip, two have an orange tulip and one with a purple and gold iris. Were there more than three floral groupings in this pattern? I would love any information about both sets and would love to purchase more.
Answer: Dear Pat and Mary, With the 150th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s assassination having occurred on April 15, this is a very timely item indeed. Abraham Lincoln, the 16th president of the United States and known as the Great Emancipator, was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theater in Washington D.C., just five days after the end of the Civil War. The assassination of Lincoln plunged the nation into mourning, and flags played a large part in the public’s outward displays of this sorrow. The 34-star flag was used from 1861 to 1863 after Kansas was admitted to the Union in 1861. Ironically, while officially the 34-star flag was to begin being used on July 4, 1861, Abraham Lincoln hosted a 34-star flag at Independence Hall in Philadelphia on Feb. 22 on his way to Washington D.C. The great family provenance that accompanies your 34-star flag notes that it belonged to your great, great grandparents in Cincinnati, Ohio, who attached black crepe to the edge and hung it on their porch upon word of Lincoln’s death. Mourning customs became quite complex during 19th century, culminating with Queen Victoria’s reign and paralleled in Europe and the United States. In addition to the dictates regarding dress, adding black borders to flags, stationary and other items was common. Thirty-fourstar American flags in general are quite collectible, with values dependent on condition, material and production method. It does have some condition issues; however, given this flag’s provenance of commemorating Lincoln’s death, I would expect it to realize between $1,000 and $3,000 at auction. Ovington’s. The mark also notes that the plates were decorated in the United States, meaning they were shipped here from the Maier factory as undecorated blanks. The other set of plates is marked for the Tirschenreuth Porcelain Factory, located in Tirschenreuth, Bavaria, Germany. This particular mark was used from circa 1903 to 1981, quite a broad range of time.
