Famed Portraits Of Benjamin Franklin By Duplessis On View At The Met FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 9, 2016 • VOL. 47, NO. 37
Glass Works Auctions Offers The Bob Ferraro Collection Glass Works Auctions will be closing part one of the Bob Ferraro collection of early American Bitters and Whiskey bottles on Monday, Sept. 12. This is the first of three absentee auctions of this iconic 45-year collection. The Lambertville, N.J., and East Greenville, Pa., based company, Glass Works, holds the absentee auctions for a period of two weeks. Bidding opens two Mondays prior to the closing date. Part two of the Ferraro collection will end Monday, Nov. 7. Part three will end on Monday, Jan. 9, 2017. Only 140 bottles are in the collection. “The collect i o n housed only two categories of antique bottles so we broke the auction up into three sessions to give our buyers time to r a i s e money A Dingens Napoleon Cocktail Bitters in amber is estimated at $7,000-$9,000.

between each session,” said Jim Hagenbuch, the auction company’s owner. Although small, the collection houses a number of extremely rare and one-of-akind pieces. The top lot in the September offering is expected to be Lot 4, a Crows Celebrated Tonic Bitters (est. $15,000$25,000). “This is currently the only known The Crows Celebrated Tonic Bitters is estimated at $15,000$25,000. example,” exclaimed Hagenbuch. “Bob bought it in one of our 1995 auctions.” Lot 13, a Dingens Napoleon Cocktail Bitters in amber, is estimated at $7,000-$9,000. “This is from a Buffalo, N.Y., company, making it very popular with the Western New York State collectors,” said Hagenbuch. Lot 21, a Dr. Roback’s Stomach Bitters from Cincinnati, Ohio, is in an unusual olive green color (est. $6,000-$8,000). “Color is King,” said Hagenbuch. “Normally this bottle is found in amber, so when one in a radically different color is auctioned it always commands a premium price.” Lot 16, an aqua barrel embossed Original Pocahontas Bitters, Y. Ferguson, is estimated at $4,000-$7,000. “Bitters bottles in the form of a barrel are very popular with collectors of both bitters and whiskies. Bob loved the form; he had 60 examples in his collection,” said Hagenbuch. For additional information on this absentee auction, call 609-483-2683 or visit www.glswrk -auction.com. This Dr. Roback’s Stomach Bitters from Cincinnati, Ohio, is in an unusual olive green color (est. $6,000-$8,000).
Several works depicting the brilliant writer, inventor, politician, patriot, and statesman Benjamin Franklin (1706–90), who has been the subject of hundreds of portraits, are on view at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in a focused exhibition. The most famous of these was painted by
Joseph Siffred Duplessis (1725–1802), Louis XVI’s official portraitist, after Franklin arrived in Paris in 1776 to seek French support for the American war of independence. Portraying Franklin in a red coat with a fur collar, and with an astonishingly elaborate frame decorated with his attributes, the oval painting was greatly admired, and Duplessis exhibited it at the 1779 Paris Salon. The painting, which has been in The Met collection for 85 years, will be a focal point of the installation “Benjamin Franklin: Portraits by Duplessis,” along with the preliminary pastel portrait of Franklin, probably a life study by Duplessis. The pastel, which is rarely exhibited and will be on loan from the New Continued on page 4

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT not easily repaired, and there are usually sufficient good examples to warrant waiting it out. This is particularly true with the coiled rye straw baskets made in Pennsylvania. Second is that I look for a tightness of weave on the baskets. Tight and regular is the sign of a quality basket. Third is that I look for patina—that lovely mellow brown color that splint baskets get after many years. Conversely, I ignore those sun and rain bleached baskets that reflect use but are often very brittle. So spend some time, study the market and consider purchasing a basket or two or 20.

This afternoon, we were out visiting a small antiques mall in our area where my wife found several baskets she liked. The last time we were at the mall, the clerk gave us a huge discount, and so we were hoping for that again this time. Alas, the owner was there, and so the deep discounts did not appear. That did not stop us from purchasing the baskets, and they came home with us. On the trip back, we talked about collecting baskets. There are a lot of myths about baskets. I recall collectors telling me about how they owned 18th and 19th century baskets. While that is possible, realistically speaking the vast majority of baskets that I have seen in public and private collections date from the 20th century. Baskets by their nature are fragile objects and were made for utilitarian purposes. They were not made to hang on a wall or sit on a dower chest. They were to be used. The few baskets that I have seen that are of real age are heavily worn with major broken splints. So where did all the finely woven, delicate baskets come from? These are generally the ones that have survived with
programs were meant for collectors and reflected a focus upon the quality of weaving and materials. There are also traditional basket makers who worked in many rural parts of the country. They were not a guilded profession in this country but rather a rural trade. Native American artists, particularly among the eastern Cherokee in North Carolina, produced many. These were baskets that were produced in traditional ways both for daily use but also for sale to collectors. There is a myth that traditional basketmakers never made items for sale to collectors. Not true! So what are the guidelines for purchasing baskets? I think condition is the key factor. I try and avoid all baskets that have splits or breaks. They are

minimal damage. Well, these are the baskets that are the products of the craft revival makers who began working in the 20th century. Oh, I know that I am talking heresay, but there is no other explanation for the survival of so any fine baskets in such extraordinary condition. The crafts revival began in the early 20th century with the Arts and Crafts movement. It came into full bloom as a result of efforts to revive jobs after the Great Depression. Eleanor Roosevelt worked hard to bring the craft revival back to parts of Appalachia and the rural South. Other events, such as the Pennsylvania Folklife Society’s annual celebration of Pennsylvania German culture, kept alive many of these traditions. The baskets made as part of these celebrations and

York Public Library, shows Franklin in the same pose as the painting but wearing a gray, collarless jacket and waistcoat. The image will be familiar to many - it is the same likeness that is replicated on the current $100 bill. The installation will also explore the processes of image transfer and replication in the 18th century. Franklin arrived in Paris on Dec. 21, 1776, as a commissioner of the American Continental Congress and lived in nearby Passy until he returned to America in 1785. He promoted the treaty of alliance between the fledgling nation and the government of Louis XVI that was signed on February 6, 1778. The American Revolutionary War was an enormously popular cause in France, where the elderly statesman’s simplicity of dress and manner were admired. The “Fur Collar Portrait, or “VIR Portrait, by Duplessis was commissioned by the entrepreneur Jacques Donatien Le Ray de Chaumont. The oval canvas, exhibited in the frame in which it is still displayed, became the object of extravagant praise. Versions from the artist’s workshop and by other hands were in demand, and the portrait was replicated dozens of times. A fine replica by or after Duplessis, also belonging to

Benjamin Franklin
The Met, is so close in design that the contours must have been transferred from the 1778 picture. Franklin understood the importance of circulating his image and gave sittings to some half-dozen French artists, but he did not enjoy doing so. He did not wish to sit for the same painter twice, sending away in later years those who applied to him for an original and suggesting that they instead commission a copy. An X-radiograph of the “Fur Collar Portrait reveals that Franklin’s coat was originally much simpler, with small buttons and a narrow collar. In this connection, the exhibition will draw attention to the Duplessis pastel portrait of Franklin that was given to the New York Public Library in 1896. For more than a century, the pastel has been conscientiously protected from damage due to overexposure to light and thus has rarely been exhibited. The pastel had been assigned to the early 1780s, but technical examination reveals that it dates to 1777 or early 1778 and is preliminary to the “Fur Collar Portrait. Its design precisely matches the composition revealed in the painting’s X-radiograph. Pastel is a portable medium, and Duplessis probably took his pastel crayons to Passy to set down the direct likeness of Franklin. “Benjamin Franklin:

Back-To-School Display Set At Haddon Heights Antiques Center For those who remember overhead projectors and filmstrips in school, learning cursive handwriting, reading “Silas Marner,” and perhaps even dipping a fountain pen in ink to write a composition - the special Back-toSchool display at the Haddon Heights Antiques Center will serve as a ride down memory lane. All sorts of colorful, nostalgic antiques and collectibles, such as books, pencil sharpeners, lunch boxes, rulers, globes, and much more, are
displayed for customers’ enjoyment and purchase. The end of summer and the beginning of fall mark a great time to go antiquing, and the Haddon Heights Antiques Center should be on
the list of places to visit. Shoppers will find a wide variety of vintage treasures at deep discounts. This multi-dealer shop has been going strong for 23 years. Located in Barrington, N.J., just off I-295 on Clements Bridge Road where Haddon Heights and Barrington meet, the Haddon Heights Antiques Center is open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For directions or further information, readers may call 856-546-0555.
