Suspense Comics #3 Brings Record $173,275 A

n incredibly rare copy of Suspense Comics #3, Pennsylvania pedigree (Continental Magazines, 1944) CBCS 9.0 stunned the comics hobby on Aug. 27 when it realized $173,275 as the top lot in Heritage Auctions’ $5.1+ million Comics and Comic Art Signature Auction. It was the highest price ever realized at auction for a non-superhero comic book. “This copy, the one pictured in Gerber’s “PhotoJournal,” had been speculated about for years, and those who saw it in person found that the high grade was well-earned,” said Barry Sandoval, director of operations for comics and comic art at Heritage. “The consignor, Magik Woo, always sought out the very best, and we’ll be offering more gems from his collection in the future.” A great deal of pre-auction buzz centered around the incredible original John Byrne and Terry Austin double splash page art from X-Men #137 (Marvel, 1980), “The Fate of the Phoenix!” arguably the most famous image from the greatest and most popular XMen story of them all. The artwork certainly did not disappoint, as bidders went toe-to-toe for it before the dust finally settled on a $167,300 final price realized, the highest price ever realized at auction for an original piece of John Byrne art. “This splash page, for many fans, represents the very heart and soul of what made the X-Men one of the most popular comic books of all time,” said Todd Hignite, vice president of Heritage Auctions. “It’s got it all: amazing art, incredible creativity and the luster of being the best X-Men story arc ever created.” Comic collectors took note of the CGC-graded 6.5 copy of All-American Comics #16 (DC, 1940) in the auction, the debut issue of the original Green This Suspense Comics #3, (Continental Magazines, 1944) CBCS 9.0 sold on Aug 27 for $173,275 at Heritage Auctions’ $5.1+ million Comics and Comic Art Signature Auction. It was the highest price ever realized at auction for a non-superhero comic book.

Lantern, Alan Scott, currently ranked as the fourth most valuable comic of all time. The book finished the day at $110,538, almost doubling the pre-auction estimate of $60,000+. Original Alex Raymond art continued to prove its strength at auction as the original Flash Gordon Sunday comic strip art dated 1-27-35 (King Features Syndication, 1935), in which Prince Barin steps in just in time to save Dale from a deadly fate in a strip from one of the most desirable periods of Raymond’s run, rose to a price realized of $95,600. Few artists are as venerated in the business as Frank Frazetta, and with good reason, as evidenced by the $89,625 final price realized for his sublime original painted cover art for the book “The Amsirs and the Iron Thorn” (Fawcett, 1967). The 1967 paperback edition of Algis Budrys’ exciting science fiction novel had the honor of being graced with a fantastic cover with an exotic alien landscape background and a muscle-bound Buck Rogers-like hero engaged in battle with a strange, winged creature brandishing a spear, rendered as only Frazetta could paint. Further highlights of the large three-day sale included the following: Marvel Comics #1 (Timely, 1939) CGC VG 4.0 sold for $68,713, and Action Comics #23 (DC, 1940) CGC VF+ 8.5 sold for 62,725. The latter was the first mention of Clark Kent’s employer for the next 75 years, “The Daily Planet.” The George Wilson Magnus, “Robot Fighter #1” cover painting original art (Gold Key, 1963) was the highest price ever realized at auction for a piece of Gold Key art, selling for $54,970. The Incredible Hulk #1 (Marvel, 1962) CGC VF7.5 realized $50,190. Jack Kirby and Vince Colletta “New Gods #4” Cover Original Art (DC, 1971), a truly great offering from Jack “King” Kirby’s cosmic Fourth World saga, realized $45,410. any student before or since, Thomas Jayne absorbed far more than the academic curriculum. During his two years at Winterthur, Thomas seems to have channeled H.F. du Pont and absorbed his approach to color, decoration, and room arrangement. To put it simply, Thomas Jayne was learning everything we were not teaching! If H.F. du Pont were with us today, he would be in the front row for Thomas Jayne’s lecture and nodding approvingly,” said J. Thomas Savage, Winterthur’s director of museum affairs. After internships at Historic Deerfield, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, and The Getty Museum, he honed his design philosophy at two of America’s most iconic design firms, ParishHadley and Associates and Kevin McNamara Inc. “It is an honor and a privilege to serve as honorary cochair and deliver the keynote

book fair will want to take advantage of this unusual opportunity to view the genius of Will Eisner through his original art. His influence on future comic book creators and cartoonists was profound, and it also went far beyond his obvious artistic talent,” said Melissa Bowersox, president of Geppi’s Entertainment Museum. “When Mr. Eisner started in the business, comic book artists were not held in the same regard as comic strip artists. During the Depression, there were 12 comic strip millionaires, but that wasn’t the case for comic book creators. Eisner became a leading advocate for creator rights and graphic novels, and his impact is still being felt today,” said Bowersox.

As well as touching on humor, Will Eisner’s cover for Will Eisner’s Quarterly #4 showcased his ability to highlight the most human and even wistful From June 2, 1940, to moments of a story, a talent October 5, 1952, Will Eisner’s often on display in his many “The Spirit” appeared in a graphic novels.

comic-book-size insert in local newspapers around the country, including Baltimore, Md. Noted for its inventiveness, wry sendups of the superhero milieu, and its succinct, sevenpage lead stories, “The Spirit” featured a nevergive-up title character, strong females ranging from childhood friends to femme fatales, and creatively designed title pages that worked the title into the art. Escaping from the perceived second-class world of comic-book art and into the lucrative world of comic strips, Eisner built “The Spirit” sections into a calling card and never looked back. Eisner introduced

comics to the U.S. Army as an instructional tool for vehicle maintenance (in P.S. Magazine), presently adapted his work to a graphic-novel format with “A Contract With God” (and many others), and taught at New York’s School of Visual Arts. He remained vibrant and fully engaged with the creative community until his death in 2005, at age 87. He won separate Harvey Awards for work created five decades apart, validating his foresight and enduring influence on those who followed in his footsteps. There will be no additional charge for museum visitors to view “75 Spirited Years: Will Eisner & The Spirit.” It is included in the regular (Continued on page 5)

WEIL ANTIQUE CENTER

By Shawn Surmick

I n November of 1970, the first edition of the “Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide” was released. Published independently and released in very small quantities, the book was made available with very little fanfare. By the time of its release, the comic book collecting hobby was still in its infancy, but the price of then vintage comic books had just started to stabilize. Released at a price point of just $5 and containing an impressive 200-plus pages, the book was known as a near complete listing of almost every comic book known to exist. The detail to putting together an accurate guide that included such vast inventory listings appealed to enthusiasts, collectors, and dealers alike. Surprisingly, it would take another five years for the guide to gain national distribution. By 1975, the comic book collecting hobby was well established. This is one of the many reasons why it is so easy to find near mint plus examples of most comic books published from 1970 and up. The collecting hobby was growing at a very steady pace, and comic book dealers emerged to take

advantage of the growing trend. Enthusiasts and collectors no longer read and dispose of their back issues. These were now commodities, an investment in the unknown that could be bought, sold, and traded much like stocks. By the 1980s, comic book collecting would continue to drift in and out of overall popularity while still solidifying its place as a major force in pop culture history. By the late 1980s, a speculative bubble would overtake the entire comic book collecting community initiated by the 1989 release of Tim Burton’s groundbreaking comic book movie “Batman.” By the time Batman hit theaters, comic book publishers were already attempting to convince a gullible public that modern era books produced with variant and special edition covers could be worth money. Through it all, the “Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide” provided expert analysis and conservative pricing year after year. By the mid-1990s, when all was said and done, Marvel Comics would face bankruptcy proceedings, and the once mighty DC Comics would suffer massive losses as a fickle public discovered the truth that generation after generation of hardcore collectors already

knew. If everyone is saving mass produced items, the chances of them ever becoming worth a lot of money is very slim. Today, well over 90 to 95 percent of all the comic books published in the late 1980s to the mid 1990s are worth cover price or less. Through it all, the “Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide” solidified its importance in the overall comic collecting hobby. With its precise ability to spot trends and speculation and remain conservative, yet fair in the prices published, Robert M. Overstreet created one of the most respected price guides in the history of the antiques and collectibles marketplace. Even with the advent of tablet based e-readers, it was long predicted that print-based publishing would soon be dead. Luckily, these fears appear to be nothing more than a pipe dream. And, while the “Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide” is readily available in various digital formats, it is no surprise that the print version contunes to sell best, even becoming a collectible in its own right as eager collectors compare prices to previous editions in an effort to spot trends. By 1995, Overstreet sold the business to Gemstone Publishing, who ensures that each and every year the guide

VILLAGE BARN ANTIQUES

gets published and released sometime in the spring. Not surprisingly, Robert M. Overstreet is also well-known for his work in the arrowhead collecting community, where he has continually authored the incredible “The Official Overstreet Identification and Price Guide to Indian Arrowheads.” That guide has quickly become one of the most established guides on the subject of arrowhead collecting and, much like his work in the comic book collecting field, is a must-own book for any arrowhead enthusiast. Today the “Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide” is still the most important yearly release in the hobby of comic book collecting. With the advent of third party grading and subscription based pricing services like GP Analysis that track the value and investment potential of graded comic books, it is interesting to see that a book that first appeared in 1970 is still relevant. The comic book collecting hobby owes a bit of gratitude to both Robert M. Overstreet and the teams at Gemstone Publishing for not sacrificing their values or ethics and ensuring collectors still have access to one of the most relevant tools in the industry. I firmly believe that the comic book collecting hobby would not be where it is today without the impact of the

New Monthly Display At The Grist Mill Antiques Center In 1871, Edward Lear penned his famous and fanciful poem that began, “The Owl and the Pussycat went to sea in a beautiful pea green boat....” Even today, those words stir up images of the magical journey undertaken by such unlikely companions, and there’s no wondering why it captures imaginations. These two friends embody some of the most beloved keepsakes that are sought after from year to year. Inspired by these whimsical muses, the Grist Mill Antiques Center is stocking the shelves of its September special display with Owls and Pussycats. Shoppers looking to start or enhance their owl or cat collections won’t be disappointed. The showcase is full of feline and fowl finds in categories such as jewelry, books, paintings and prints, decoys, needlework, kitchenware, ephemera, figurines, ceramics,

tabletop décor, primitives, advertising, and toys. The friendly and helpful dealers at the store will be delighted to assist in finding exactly what every shopper is looking for. On Wednesday, Sept. 30, the Grist Mill will host its monthly Scavenger Hunt. A prize will awarded to the person who finds the most items. Fooled By Fakes By Anita Stratos

the U.S. Some of the finest glass companies produced paperweights, including St. Louis, Tiffany, Baccarat, Lalique and Clichy. High-end paperweights can sell for hundreds or even thousands of dollars, some having stretched into five figures. Italian paperweights are known for their millefiori (translation: a thousand flowers) weights made up of many small “canes” that create the fascinating patterns we’ve all seen in many different forms. Antique Venetian millefiori paperweights were dated on the inside, with tiny individual canes used for each number of the year. So a paperweight made in 1854 would have four tiny canes, each with an individual number of that year, and this date is visible when looking down at the weight. However, in the 1970s, reproductions of antique Venetian millefiori paperweights were made by Italian glass craftsmen, and they included the year the weight was originally made. You can tell the difference because the dates inside the modern weights were typically put on one solid cane instead of four tiny ones. These 20th-century pieces are frequently misrepresented as antiques by sellers and auction houses that truly don’t know they are reproductions. In the 1930s, forgeries of paperweights made by impor-

tant companies were made in China. These included copies of weights by Baccarat, Sandwich Glass Company, New England Glass Company and Millville. A study done by a Smithsonian expert found that authentic old high-end weights were sent to China by American importers for the specific purpose of having them copied. Many fake Murano millefiori paperweights have been and are still being produced in China, some with fake Murano labels, but Chinese millefiori generally have much less complexity when compared to true Murano millefiori. You can see a lot of these in online auctions, misleadingly listed as Italian glass. Most online auctions for Chinese millefiori paperweights have very low starting prices, many of which are no more than 99 cents. It would be remiss in a discussion of paperweights not to talk about pieces created by

Paul Ysart, a Scottish glassmaker who reinvented 19thcentury techniques with innovative new technologies and designs. Considered to be one of the “greatest paperweight artists of the 20th century” (www.ysartglass.com), his work has been copied but never truly duplicated. Since Ysart’s high-quality paperweights command very high prices, there are plenty of fakes out there. A member of a glassmaking family, Paul’s love leaned toward paperweights, which he began making in the 1930s and continued until 1979. A large number of fake Ysart paperweights infiltrated the market between 1987 and 1989, and unfortunately, some of the earliest fakes were of high quality. However, some weights were duplicated, which is a sure sign of a fake. It’s estimated that over 1,000 fakes were made and sold, which would have brought nearly $400,000 to the forgers. You won’t find Paul Ysart’s signature on most of his paperweights made for the commercial market; however, he did sign some that he made for acquaintances and friends. If you find a supposed Ysart

Originally considered both practical and luxurious, glass paperweights are relatively modern inventions, considering that the first signed and dated glass weights weren’t made until the mid-1840s. Intended to look beautiful while serving an important purpose of holding papers in place in drafty buildings, Pietro Bigaglia is credited with making the first weights. He was a Venetian glassmaker who employed ancient glassworking methods in crafting his paperweights. Soon, glassmakers in other countries also began production, from England to Belgium and finally

from the 19th-century weights in the color of the pansies’ lower petals, the magnification of the glass, weight shapes, and cane color schemes. In general, things like cane color and quality, magnification, glass color tone and fogginess in addition to marks on weights that have them are all clues to authenticity. Since all these features vary from maker to maker, it’s important to know the various aspects of the glassworker’s style and the features of his pieces before making a determination. All photos are property of the author. At A Glance Signs of a fake. 1. Millefiori with less complexity 2. Uneven “PY” mark on alleged Ysart weights 3. Incorrect cane colors/quality for specific maker Reference books, websites, and collecting groups are the best ways to keep from being fooled by fakes. Here are a few: Ysart Glass (www.ysartglass.com); The Glass Museum On Line (www.theglassmuseum.com), excellent reference and forum; “Scottish Paperweights” by Robert G. Hall; and “The Dictionary of Paperweight Signature Canes” by Andrew Dohan.

ence be revealed. Similar problems occurred even back in the 19th century, when glassworkers from Europe brought to America canes from their previous places of employment, using them in the weights they made here. Others reproduced the canes they were previously making, which caused difficulty in distinguishing their American-made pieces from their European-made weights. This is why canes cannot be used exclusively for identification. There’s also evidence that some modern Baccarat millefiori and pansy paperweights made in the 1920s and 1930s contain authentic canes with dates from the 19th century, some as old as 1815. The canes were used by DuPont, who worked for Baccarat during that time period, and it’s uncertain whether he deliberately or accidentally put old canes into new weights. In any case, the weights made by DuPont differ

paperweight with the “P. Ysart” signature, check other features of the weight and make sure to have the piece authenticated. Ysart’s paperweights have a cane with either “PY,” “P,” or “H.” The “H” stands for Harland/Highland Works. However, not every paperweight contains a marked cane, so you need to become familiar with his work in order to identify an unmarked weight. It is said that the weights he made for the American market had canes marked “PY,” but those he made for the UK market were either unmarked or contained the “H” mark. The “PY” mark has been forged quite a bit, but there are a few ways to recognize these. First, the initials may not be even. That is, the “Y” may appear lower than the “P” in the cane. Second, authentic marks are pink, but many forgeries have one orange letter and one pink letter. Finally, if both initials are too small inside the cane and don’t fill the space, it’s probably a forgery. But even a correct date or signed cane can occasionally be found in a counterfeit weight. Some weights resembling Paul Ysart’s work containing proper PY canes were discovered. Only through examination of other features of the weights can the differ-

Among the collection’s highlights is a vintage snapshot of 17-year-old George Harrison modeling his first leather jacket, taken in 1960 in Hamburg shortly before his deportation from Germany for being underage (est. $3,000+); a postcard sent by Ringo Starr to his grandmother from Hamburg, signed “Lots of Love, Richy xxxxx” (est. $4,000+); an autographed copy of the group’s first EMI single, “Love Me Do” (est. $10,000) from 1962; and a 1961 letter from Epstein to the Top Ten Club in Hamburg concerning a Beatles booking (est. $1,500+). A graphic designer by trade, Blaschke’s visual sensibility helped bring Beatlemania to life at the Beatlemania Hamburg museum, which displayed much of his collection. In addition to historic and rare items, Blaschke also loved to collect the many items of Beatles merchandise produced in the Swinging ’60s, including a cotton print Beatles dress from Holland (est. $1,500+); a set of Paul and Ringo bubble-bath bottles by Colgate (est. $1,000+); and a metal talcum powder bottle from

Blaschke’s collection tells the Beatles’ story through original photographs, documents, autographs and memorabilia. A noted Beatle expert and historian, Blaschke amassed one of the finest collections of Beatles material in Europe, if not the world, much of which was displayed at a dedicated Beatles museum in Hamburg, Germany. The 300+ lot collection covers the entire career of the group, but is especially notable for the inclusion of many items related to the time the Beatles spent in Hamburg from 1960-62, performing in the city’s vibrant nightclubs and honing their distinctive sound, which would soon win the world over. “This is perhaps the most historically important Beatles document to ever appear at auction,” said Dean Harmeyer, consignment director at Heritage Auctions. “Without this contract, which directly led to their involvement with Brian Epstein, the Beatles may have never been able to achieve their later success as a recording group. And at the time it was a momentous career milestone, they’d finally secured an actual recording deal, something they had only dreamed of before ‘My Bonnie.’” During the Beatles’ second visit to Hamburg in 1961, the German record producer Bert Kaempfert saw them performing at the Top Ten Club on the city’s famed Reeperbahn. Liking what he heard, Kaempfert enlisted the Beatles and another Top Ten Club performer, Tony Sheridan, to spend a day recording rock and roll versions of traditional songs for the German market. “My Bonnie” was a song taught to children in German schools, and the producer thought that a modern, uptempo version could be a hit. For their efforts, the Beatles, John

Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and original drummer Pete Best, were paid what amounted to about $20 each. The sessions with Kaempfert led to the release of the single “My Bonnie” on the German Polydor label in October 1961, which was credited to “Tony Sheridan & The Beat Brothers.” A stipulation in the contract allowed Polydor to use a different group name; it was felt that the name “Beatles” would not be readily accepted in the German market. As the contract was written entirely in German, the Beatles had very little understanding of the details. What did matter to them was that they were making a professional recording for a major record label. Their first. The single achieved very modest success in Germany, but back home in Liverpool, local Beatles fans who knew of the recording began asking for it in local record shops, including the store owned and managed by Brian Epstein. When he learned that the requests were for a Liverpool group, Epstein paid a visit to the Cavern Club to see the Beatles, then back from Germany, perform, and the rest is history. Epstein became their manager, and within a few months he had secured a music test with EMI producer George Martin, resulting in the recording of “Love Me Do,” the group’s first hit. “The Blaschke collection represents one of the finest Beatles collections to ever come to auction, and is the most extensive Beatles collection ever offered at Heritage,” said Harmeyer. “It is truly an international collection, with items from around the world. And with its roots in Germany, the Blaschke collection shines a particular light on the importance of the time the early Beatles spent in Hamburg. For die-hard Beatle fans, Hamburg is an incredibly important chapter in their early, formative period. Had the Beatles not gone to Hamburg, the later story may have been very different or perhaps not known at all,” said Harmeyer. “This collection opens a window to a part of Beatles history that’s not well known internationally,” said author and Beatles expert Ulf Krüger, who worked with Blaschke to launch the Hamburg museum “Beatlemania Hamburg” before Blaschke’s unexpected death in 2012. “John Lennon himself famously said he was born in Liverpool but grew up

The first recording contract ever signed by The Beatles, which put the Fab Four on a path that would change music history, is expected to sell for $150,000 as Heritage Auctions presents “The Uwe Blaschke Beatles Collection” on Saturday, Sept. 19, in New York City. The resulting single from the recording session, a rock and roll version of “My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean” led directly to the Beatles being discovered by manager Brian Epstein, through whose efforts the group then secured their unprecedented worldwide success.

Because of its design significance and impressive appearance, a Thomason corkscrew is a “must have” in any developed collection. But because they can be easily found, a plain brass “barrel” Thomason in good condition can be bought in any CollectorCorkscrews.com auction for a few hundred dollars. This “Japanned” version sold for $8,250, reflecting both its rarity and the quality and condition of the delicate gold leaf on black enamel, a high skilled decorative process popular in England in the early 19th century. Perhaps the most surprising sale was not even a corkscrew with the traditional helix but a rare cork extractor using folding prongs. Prongs, which break the seal between the bottle and the cork (think of the “ah-so” prong puller), often appear in corkscrew auctions, but to see them reach $4,100 was a shock. The “Magic” markings on the prongs are a mystery. They relate to the 1892 U.S. patent of Lucien Mumford but actually correspond to a different 1896 patent of E.S. Piper. The more common Mumford “Magic” prongs don’t fold and typically sell for around $250. In total, about 1,000 corkscrews are sold annually

over three online auction sales, totaling an average of $600,000 through www.CollectorCorkscrews.co m. While the big ticket items attract the most attention, the majority of sale lots sell for less than $300. A full public record of the 7,000 previous sales can be found on the club’s website and is a great resource for both buyers and sellers. CollectorCorkscrews.com has operated since 2008 by volunteer corkscrew collectors and offers a “Buy Now” section for immediate purchase on its website. Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century Time To Hit The Road: Collecting Classic Cars By Donald-Brian Johnson

Ah, those old auto songs: “In My Merry Oldsmobile”, “See the USA in your Chevrolet,” “The Little Ford Rambled Right Along”. . . . Since Henry Ford’s first Model T rolled off the assembly line in 1908, the world’s love affair with the “horseless carriage” has been something to sing about. Vintage autos hold an irresistible appeal to those who long for the days before power steering, GPS, or even, in some cases, windshields. Although automobiles had been introduced in the late 19th century, the Model T was the first affordable auto. Short on frills but long on durability, the inexpensive “T” meant that middle class folks could finally put away the horse and buggy. During the 1908-27 production run, over 15 million “Ts” were manufactured, with a car emerging from the production line every three minutes. The year 1928 saw the introduction of the “Model A.” This “new and improved” Ford was an immediate hit, even inspiring another popular song

AUCTION SALE BILLS

www.antiquesandauctionnews.net

There is a high likelihood that several especially rare entries in Morphy’s Friday and Saturday, Sept. 18 and 19, Antique Advertising Auction will be completely new to the eyes of even the most advanced collectors. The 1,147-lot sale is led by two extraordinary turn-of-the-20thcentury signs, one intended to grab the attention of hardware buyers and the other to dazzle soda drinkers with its regal depiction of a popular opera singer of yesteryear. The former, cataloged as Lot 543, is an eye-catching 1897 trade sign created by Silas West of Haverhill, Mass., and is of a type that was intended for display on walls, buildings and barns to advertise local businesses. The realistic pressed-tin figure of a man in wall-climbing mode has a sign on its back that says “Climbing for the Headquarters Hardware & Implements.” “Very few of these Silas West signs have survived, and the one we are offering is one of the best of all known examples,” said Morphy’s founder and CEO Dan Morphy. “We believe it may have been used by a company in Maine,” said Morphy. The estimate is $15,000 to $25,000.

This Gillco reverse-on-glass ad for taxi cab light promotes “Tally-Ho Beer” and is estimated at $10,000 to $15,000.

The second headliner, Lot 630, is a superb 1905 heavy cardboard poster advertising Coca-Cola. Ornately framed and measuring an impressive 54 inches by 33.5 inches, it features a grand depiction of opera singer Lillian Nordica in an evening gown, holding a marabou fan and posing alongside a glass of CocaCola placed on a gilt pedestal. Quite likely the finest such poster any Coke collector will ever encounter, it is expected to make $12,500 to $25,000. Hires’ 1900-10 doublesided hanger sign depicting a child feeding a foaming mug of root beer to a personified Earth is universally coveted by soft drink advertising collectors. Morphy’s sold another example in 2007, and it is believed that the one in the Sept. 18 session (Lot 861) is only the second one ever to

appear at public auction. In excellent to near-mint condition, the 10-inch-diameter sign emblazoned “The Only Relief For A Thirsty World” could attract a winning bid of $4,000 to $8,000. Many rarities promoting alcoholic beverages will be available. Lot 205, a very seldom-seen reverse-on-glass Gillco taxi cab light advertising Tally-Ho Beer, boasts a vivid color image of a horsedrawn coach with male and female passengers. Beautifully presented, the 24.5-inch-diameter sign is estimated at $10,000 to $15,000. From an extensive selection of beer cans comes Lot 26, a Black Dallas Beer flattop from ABC Brewing Company, St. Louis, Mo. One of the better-condition cans of those known to exist, it could reach $2,000 to $3,000. Tobacco is another of the “vices” most frequently seen on late-19th and early-20thcentury signs. Morphy’s will offer some outstanding examples of smoking-related advertising in its two-day event. Lot 1176 is a wonderful self-framed tin-litho sign

for Murad Turkish Cigarettes and features a raven-haired Turkish maiden holding up a tin of Murads on a serving tray. A visually appealing production, it is estimated at $2,000 to $5,000. Lot 1129, a cylindrical Home Run Cigar tin with a colorful, well-detailed image of men playing baseball, holds crossover appeal with sports memorabilia collectors. The tin is rated “excellent” and is cataloged with a pre-sale estimate of $6,000 to $9,000. Lot 302, a curved, lighted Vitrolite sign advertising “Round Oak Stoves, Ranges and Furnaces” features a striking central portrait of an Indian brave named “DoeWah-Jack.” It retains strong coloration and has a copperflashed over wood and tin frame. The 16-by-22-inch sign is in excellent-plus
