Miller & Siegrist To Liquidate Echoes From The Past The Reading Public Museum is pleased to present an exhibition now on view in its North American Indian Gallery featuring traditional, handmade wool blankets from the Navajo nation, drawn from its permanent collection. Six varied examples from the middle of the 19th through the early decades of the 20th century, including saddle blankets and an impressive thirdphase Chief’s Blanket (post 1860s), are on display. The assemblage of exceptional works also includes fine examples of silver and turquoise jewelry - bracelets and necklaces (squash blossom and crescent pendant) from the early
20th century. Most of the jewelry was collected during visits to Shiprock in northwest New Mexico, the Navajo reservation, in the early 1940s. The grouping also includes an early, hand-tooled concho belt made of silver and hide and a wooden weaving fork, which was used to make the impressive Navajo weavings. Navajo blankets, with their bold patterns, rich colors, and finely woven techniques, were initially utilitarian objects (cloaks, wraps, and saddle blankets), but eventually became highly sought after and prized trade items in the West. Curator Scott Schweigert remarked that since “the blankets are not often on view, due to their fragile nature - easily fading if left for too long in strong light - we hope visitors to come to see them during this special exhibition.” The works will be on view through the end of January, 2017. The Reading Public Museum is supported in part by grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and is located at 500 Museum Road, Reading, Pa. The museum is open daily 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For admission or membership information, or directions, visit www.reading publicmuseum.org.

Ben and Bertha Brubaker have been operating Echoes from the Past for close to 50 years. The couple began by selling architectural building materials out of their barn located outside Manheim, Pa. Over the years, the business grew to the sale of rustic barn beams and assorted lumber to salvaged hardware, shutters, glass, slate, and doors, just to name a few things. The Brubakers have decided to retire and will be selling the complete inventory of the business during a three-day public auction slated for Thursday, Sept. 22; Saturday, Sept. 24; and Saturday, Oct. 1. This is a unique lifelong collection. The couple has been heavily involved in community programs
such as the 4-H, Big Brothers/ Big Sisters, Grave Concern, Gideons and have hosted Fresh Air Fund children. Visit www.millersiegrist.com to learn more about what will be sold each day. The sale will include a large amount of unique building materials, such as lumber and hardware, but also woodworking material, tools, furniture, tractors, trailers, and assorted antiques. Among the unusual items to be sold during the third sale will be an antique “C. Moyer” sleigh from Mount Joy. The sale will be held at 1495 Lebanon Road (Route 72), Manheim, Pa. Over the years, Barnes continued to support Matisse’s work and invited him in 1930 to paint a canvas triptych mural for three arches at the foundation’s home outside Philadelphia in Lower Merion, Pa. The project, which was completed in 1933, cost Barnes $30,000 and reinvigorated Matisse, whose work had lagged during his years in Nice between 1917 and 1930, says the art historian Yve-Alain Bois. legacy. A series of lectures and panels will look at topics like the artist’s interest in nonWestern art and will include speakers such as the historians Claudine Grammont and Helene Ivanoff. The Barnes Foundation, founded by Dr. Albert Barnes (1872-1951) in 1922, houses one of the most comprehensive collections of the artist’s work. “Our goal is to assess the state of our knowledge on Matisse today and to outline what could be done next in terms of future study, research, exhibitions, and collections,” says the conference’s organizer, Sylvie Patry, the Barnes’s deputy director and chief curator. “I think it is always fascinating for the general public to understand that even with such a famous artist like Matisse, scholars always find new ways to look at his work.” The Barnes has a long association with Matisse. In 1912, its founder, Albert Barnes, bought his first two works by the artist, the paintings “The Sea Seen from Collioure” (1906)

“Matisse in the Barnes Foundation” published by Thames and Hudson in January, will also deliver the conference’s keynote lecture. “In the Nice period, (Matisse) was very frustrated, because he had been surpassed by Picasso as a champion of the avant-garde, and so he retreated,” said Bois. “The end of the 1920s was a difficult period for him. He was bored to death by his Odalisque paintings, even though they were very successful on the market. When the Barnes commission arrives, he is offered a great surface to decorate, and suddenly he is plunged back into his youth.” The Barnes commission freed Matisse from the rigidity of his Nice style. “His sketches for ‘The Dance’ are extraordinary because they are just a few strokes,” said Bois. “There is absolutely no description, they’re just schematic indications of the movement of the dancer. He realizes he doesn’t have to be so guarded. In the early 1930s there is definitely a change in the way he understands drawing and painting, and he starts to value work that is not completely controlled.” To learn more, visit www.barnesfoundation.org. COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: Collections Of Collections
I have to confess to being a collector of collections. For me, the history and the hunt are the overarching reasons for which I chase antiques. I read about something, and then I want to possess a piece for my own collection. I also want to be out and exploring in co-ops or a house or at an auction looking to find that real treasure. I remember a number of years ago hearing a wellrespected dealer say that in every house there is one good antique. The trick is knowing what it is. Maybe it is a piece of silver hiding in a drawer of old spoons or maybe it is a very
2) Ancient and medieval coins. Locked away in the bank is a collection of ancient and medieval coins that I began years ago when one of my mentors, Bruce Bazelon, introduced me to collecting this subject. There is something very cool about holding a coin of Richard the Lionheart or the Roman Emperor Augustus. 3) Political stuff. As the son of a reporter, I am a total political news geek. I am the one who has three TVs going so that I can watch election night coverage. This year with all its nastiness, it is a bit harder to be a political collector, but I enjoy the campaign items from the past that have a sense of humor. The Spiro Agnew watch that runs backward is still as funny now as it was 30 years ago.
This is just a sample of the collection of collections that I have. Some of these areas just sit. I have not added to my ancient coins in several years. In that case, I am not willing to spend big money on it, as the collection is more of a passing hobby than a fixation. Similarly, I really only resurrect the political collection every four years when we have a presidential race. I have found that most collectors have similar experiences. Often, one is seen as the serious collection, and the second is the fun one. For
example, one might collect clocks or paintings as the “serious” collection and then toys as the fun collection. Both
are collected with different degrees of passion, and I think both reflect the richness of being a collector.

rare Pez dispenser. Discovering that treasure is about using your knowledge to reveal that treasure. So what does that mean for me as a collector? It means that I have collections of maybe five or ten items just because a subject fascinated me - not enough to totally collect the item to the exclusion of others, but just enough to keep an odd eye out. Some of my oddball collections include the following: 1) Memorabilia from the WPA and CCC and other New Deal era programs. My fascination with this comes from discovering CCC camps in Pennsylvania. I also realized that had I been alive in the 1930s that I would have probably been employed in the museum extension project.

Attention, buyers and sellers of fresh, rare and unique collectibles - Carlisle Events has something for you at its annual Fall Carlisle Event. Fall Carlisle will run from Wednesday, Sept. 28, through Sunday, Oct. 2, and a popular show-within-the-show has returned. Back by popular demand will be the North Side Collector’s Corner, or NSCC for short. This feature event will host vendors spread over hundreds of spaces, all showcasing items that collectors and enthusiasts alike will enjoy. The NSCC is a powerhouse segment of the Fall Carlisle event, which will showcase true collectible antiques reflective of a bygone era that are popular among today’s enthusiasts. Within the tent and in the spaces surrounding it, vendors will be handpicked to showcase items that will enhance the standard collectibles and memorabilia made available within the swap meet. In all, this feature show encompasses 300-plus spaces, some indoors and some outdoors, and will be stocked with dozens of signs that carry a gas or soda theme, old time coolers, battery and coin items, toys, games, various entertainment, and more. This is fresh merchandise, and additional vendors like the ones bringing the aforementioned items to Carlisle are booking spaces to be part of the NSCC. To assure the “right” items are included, this area will be

Huge Premier Sale To Feature Toys, Dolls, Marbles, And Figural Cast-Iron Around 1,300 Lots At Two-Day Morphy Auction Morphy Auctions is pleased to announce its Toy, Doll, Marble, and Figural CastIron sale to be held on Friday, Sept. 23, and Saturday, Sept. 24. The bidding will start promptly at 9 a.m. each day. All lots from this event are on display in Morphy’s Denver, Pa., auction gallery and available
for preview now. This sale’s offering of over 250 fine European and American dolls should put buyers in a most playful mood. The event’s roster of brands on offer - including Jumeau, Bru, Steiner, Kestner, Kammer & Reinhardt, and many others - reads like a “who’s who” in the antique doll world. Lot #32A, a rare William and Mary wooden doll, is royalty in its own right. This 17thcentury doll featuring sculptured facial details and an incredible presentation was purchased at a Sotheby`s sale four decades ago. It is estimated at $15,000-$25,000. It’s elementary with lot #13, an early, and unmarked French mystery Bebe. She features a unique composition and wood French body, straight wrists, and integral ball joints. This beauty in blue is estimated at $10,000-$20,000 and was possibly made by Hallopeau - but only she knows for sure! Doll collectors The early French Mystery Bebe is esti- who favor unusual examples mated at $10,000-$20,000.
need to sneak a peek at lot #146, a fully articulated wooden “smuggling” doll from the mid-19th century. This doll features an open wooden panel at the back of its torso, which would allow various items to be concealed and smuggled across a border. It is estimated at $10,000-$20,000. Lot #16, a large dancing French fashion automata holding a lorgnette, will have the bidding audience on their feet. Her mechanism enables her to waltz about the parlor floor, raise her left hand to her face, and turn her head in search of her dancing partner. She is estimated at $8,000$12,000. And collectors will certainly long for lot #71, a Kammer & Reinhardt “Elise” German character child with a distinctly wistful appearance. She is estimated at $6,500$9,500. Candy container collectors will have a hard time
containing themselves over this sale’s offering of more than 400 of these sweet treats. It’s a Sunday drive with lot #807, a Stutz Bearcat glass candy container with its original closure and paint, estimated at $10,000-$15,000. Things are cool with lot #899, a glass refrigerator candy container with its original tin closure and candy, estimated at $3,000-$6,000. Lot #806, a Boob McNutt glass example in excellent condition with its original closure, would make his creator Rube Goldberg smile with its $3,000-$5,000 estimate. Lot #977, a Swedish lamb candy container with its original scalloped closure and candy, is estimated at $3,000-$5,000. And there’s no place like home with lot #898,
a Dolly’s bath candy container, and lot #707, a Flossie Fisher bed candy container. They are estimated at $3,000$5,000 and $2,000-$3,000, respectively. This sale’s selections of American and European tin litho toys are certain to be heavy metal favorites with collectors. Five-Day Online-Only Auction Will Be Conducted By Renaissance Auction Group Mostly Props And Costumes From “The Late Showâ€? Will Be Sold hats, berets, sombreros, and more); men’s and women’s sweaters and vests; Speedo swimsuits; Everlast boxing gear; football-themed items, gear and apparel; and women’s suits used in Hillary Clinton skits. All five sessions will include costumes, clothing and props worn by Letterman, Shaffer and other cast members, as well as items used in various skits. The show designers seemed to favor “Made in USAâ€? apparel, as many of the clothing pieces are tagged as such. Items fall into one of three categories: items with no written provenance; items with Wardrobe Department tags and labels; and items with provenance that can be substantiated with video footage from the TV shows. Some of Yon Zweibon’s personal favorites include the Halloween kids’ costumes, such as a medicine cabinet, a Starbucks coffee cup and a giant moldy raisin; Spiderman costumes (from the “How Many Spidermen Can We Fit In A Jamba Juiceâ€? skits); Rupert Lee costumes from the show’s “Hello Deliâ€? skits; the large Sabra Hummus costume; and a Queen Amidala costume. Howze mentioned some items, too, such as the many L.L. Bean coats and hunting jackets that will be sold; double-breasted suits worn by Letterman; and the wild and colorful suits worn by Paul Shaffer. “We’re starting the bidding at $5 for every lot,â€? said Howze. “All lots sell to the highest bidder. The full catalog is online right now on our company website. I expect this will be a busy, exciting sale,â€? continued Howze. Shipping will be available on most items. A trove of props and costumes from “The Late Show With David Lettermanâ€? TV show – over 3,000 items, many to be offered in multiples, including articles of clothing worn by Letterman and his guests, costumes worn in comedy skits, and props from innumerable bits done over the years – will be sold in a series of five online-only auctions. The auctions will run from Monday, Sept. 19, to Friday, Sept. 23. “If you include “Late Night With David Lettermanâ€? and “The Late Show With David Letterman,â€? about 5,000 shows were produced over the course of 31 years,â€? said Bill Howze of The Renaissance Auction Group, the Reading, Pa., based firm conducting the auction. “Thousands of props, costumes and accessories were used during that period, and they are now being sold at auction.â€? The series of auctions is titled “Last Late Show Dates With Dave.â€? In a nod to the show’s airing schedule, the events will be held Monday through Friday (Sept. 19 to 23) from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Eastern time (90 minutes, just like the show). Lots can be viewed and bid on now through the closing of each auction, online, at The Renaissance Auction Group’s website, www.auctionhowze.com. They can also be previewed live the weekend of Sept. 17 and 18 at Beyond Costumes Inc., located at 530 Nepperhan Ave. in Yonkers, N.Y. The owner of the business, Ms. Yon Zweibon, acquired the massive inventory last summer after being contacted by a designer from the show during its waning days. “I considered incorporating the collection into my general stock, but it occurred to me there are many people out there who would love to own a piece of a show that was watched by so many millions,â€? said Zweibon.
