The John J. Snyder Jr. Estate Sale Auction Showcases Collection Of Impressive Range expertise, and his knowledge was vast. Just two areas of study he contributed to were sulphur inlaid furniture of Lancaster County, and tallcase clocks of the Susquehanna River Valley. Snyder created a foundation and lasting legacy by forming the John J. Snyder Jr. historic preservation fund. One hundred percent of the proceeds from the auction went to this fund, which will support historic preservation efforts in both Cumberland and Lancaster counties, according to Conestoga president Jeff DeHart. Snyder had no heirs. The objects sold by Conestoga reflected but one part of Snyder’s extensive holdings. There were 14 organizations that received objects from the Snyder estate. All are located in Pennsylvania, except the Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library in Delaware and the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts (MESDA) in North Carolina. The auction realized a hammer price total of $807,125 (not including buyer’s premium). There were 320 in-house registered bidders and 2,027 bidders online. The predominantly formal highstyle offerings included an array of Asian arts, jewelry, silver, and china in many categories: Wedgwood, Lustre, Blue Staffordshire, Pearlware, among others. There was also a wide variety of both paintings and furniture. “John was a full-time professional collector and so you see an assemblage that really reflects the This is just a small sampling of the heart, soul, and passion of someone By Karl Pass
onestoga Auction Company held a 1,077 lot two-day unreserved sale for the John J. Snyder Jr. estate on Sept. 12 and 13 at their Manheim, Pa., facility. Snyder passed away in late 2013 at the age of 67 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was a well-respected researcher, author and antiquarian whose expertise was extensive, notably in the area of southeastern Pennsylvania decorative arts. Snyder was born in Harrisburg, Pa. He was a graduate of Dickinson College and was a fellow in the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture through the University of Delaware. Snyder resided the bulk of his life in Lancaster County, Pa., and was an advocate for historical preservation among other pursuits. He was charitable with his time and

who could focus upon it 24/7. Also, John built the collection without the benefit of the Internet (catalogs or buying) and without traveling very far from home (he told me that he had not left the Mid-Atlantic in decades),” commented Peter Seibert, friend and director of the Millicent Rogers Museum in Taos, N.M. “There are different types of collectors out there. John and I used to talk about them. One that irritated us both the most was the collector who only bought with an eye toward what it would be worth. They never saw either the art or the history of the object but only what it would be worth in 10 years or 20 years. “John, as a professional collector, really never talked about what the collection was worth,” said Seibert. “Rather, it was always about the study and pursuit of knowledge that could be shaken, squeezed, magnified out of a piece.” (Continued on page 2)

The John J. Snyder Jr. Estate Sale (Continued from page 1)
He recalled a story about Snyder. “I say this dramatically but I remember him telling me that he got wedged inside a clock case one time looking for signatures. Living alone and having the clock in a second floor hallway, he was rather nervous about what would happen if he could not get out of the clock and he had a shift in gravity.” Seibert noted that his friend had an amazing eye for
finding signatures on things. “When I first met John, I had to admit I was skeptical of that skill but he quickly convinced me to the contrary.” He continued, “I recall him teaching me that I needed to study every part of a clock pendulum, as that would often have a name scratched into the lead backing or on the tip of the whip or any of a dozen other spots.” According to Seibert, the two met during Seibert’s interview for the directorship of the

All prices include buyer’s premium. More material from the estate was sold the Tuesday
following the sale on Sept. 16 at Conestoga’s weekly sale. This included more china. In addition, more items from the Snyder estate will be included in Conestoga’s multi-consignor catalog sale to be held Saturday, Nov. 15. “There will be furniture in that sale, including 5 or 6 more tallcase clocks,” said DeHart. I have to confess to a certain homesickness for central Pennsylvania. The abundance of good antiques in many different shops and venues, along with lots of auctions and flea markets, is, to use an old military phrase, a target rich environment. Here in the West, there are relatively few antiques to buy. Part of this is due to the lack of materials available to sell. Just not much to see because there was never much here. The second point is that while one would love to find Hispanic folk art, Native American arts or even cowboy artifacts, most of those items have long made their way back East. In fact, we often joke that most Indian jewelry was originally sold in the West to Easterners who then died and their stuff was resold to dealers from the West who now resell it again to tourists coming from the East.
often embraced, from an early period in their lives, the culture of the region. Thus, one can find really interesting cowboy movie and related items, often for prices below what they would bring in the East. Consignment shops are another place to hunt for things in the West, although my results have been a bit more mixed here. Stephen’s Consignment Gallery in Santa Fe, N.M., is probably the best run of all those that I have seen, and his goal is to sell merchandise rather than giving consigners a vanity outlet. Antique malls are pretty rare here and most are of not great quality primarily

That being said, there are in fact bargains and good hunting to be found but it takes some real hunting. There are abundant flea markets in the West and most are filled with baby clothing, used bicycles, and new tools. However, it is because there is so much recent stuff that older items often slip through undetected. Point in question was a recent purchase by us of a very early Spanish-style saddle that must have come directly from the barn where it was stored. It was dry and has needed work but it is a gem and very early and for only $50, it was a steal. Antique shops are another venue to look for great items but with a reset to your thinking. For every retiree who has come to the West to live, there is a pile of stuff that they brought with them from their original home that often includes some nice antiques. Particularly, one can find good early English ceramics and glass offered at bargain prices because no one understands what they are. Similarly, the people who have moved to the West

Morphy’s (Continued from page 5)
USA. Impeccably restored in classic black, with matching top and interior, the showpiece Speedster in Morphy’s sale has traveled less than 50,000 miles. An iconic convertible with the sleekest design of its decade, the Porsche Speedster has enjoyed a cult following since the day of its release, and the one to be auctioned is as pristine as any available in today’s marketplace. Nothing says “quality like the name Ferrari, and Morphy’s premiere automotive auction will offer just that level of perfection in the form of a red 1987 Ferrari Testarossa. The Pininfarinadesigned sports car, the successor to the Ferrari Belinetta Boxer has a 12-cylinder midengine and rear-wheel-drive layout that keeps the center of gravity in the middle of the car, thereby increasing stability and improving the car’s cornering ability. Morphy noted that each car accepted for the Oct. 11th auction was vetted, top to bottom, by Tom Hathazy, a highly

experienced automotive professional who heads Morphy’s Classic Car division. “We’re very proud of the entries in our Oct. 11th auction premiere and believe the event will be an exciting start for our newest division, said Morphy. “We’re not changing the way we do business, quite the contrary. We’re taking the same marketing expertise and customer service that we’ve developed over the past 10 years and applying it to classic cars. It’s a more personal approach, and we believe both consignors and bidders will respond very positively to this method. All forms of bidding will be available, including in person at the gallery, by phone, absentee or live via the Internet through Morphy Live, LiveAuctioneers, Proxibid and Invaluable. The auction will begin at noon Eastern Time. Morphy Auctions is located at 2000 N. Reading Road in Denver, Pa. For additional information, call 717-335-3435 or visit www.morphyauctions.com. Rago Held A $2.1 Million Auction Weekend On Sept. 12 To 14
3-DAY ESTATE AUCTION From The Estate of Thomas S. Clark
SAT., OCT. 18 (Day One) 10:30 A.M.
Great Estates sale, the Myochin School snake in articulated iron, came to us from private sellers, as does the majority of our property. (The sellers) had seen the results for the Myochin School snake we sold in December 2013,” said Tucker. “At $37,500, it didn’t come close to the selling price for the first. The family’s children had enjoyed playing with it too much for that. Still, not bad for a much loved toy.” She noted that there was one area of the sale that produced disappointing results. “We were disappointed mainly by the lack of interest in a number of the Asian lots, which we are still trying to figure out.” The total gross total for all three days of sales was $2,114,919. Rago Auctions will hold the next Great Estates Auction on Saturday, Dec. 6, and a Discovery Auction on Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 17 and 18, 2015. “This auction was notable for the inauguration of online bidding on two new platforms, Bidsquare (www.bidsquare.com) and the Rago site,” said Miriam Tucker, managing partner at Rago Auctions. “Both sites performed very well throughout the sales. We are particularly excited about the potential for Bidsquare. Results were strong for property pretty well across the board, as shown by the top lots.” According to Tucker, Great Estates lots consisted of fresh-to-market property from New York, New Jersey, New England and Florida. Items had been consigned through Estate Services, which works with executors, fiduciaries, attorneys and estate planners nationwide. Lot 1512, Paul Jouve’s etching “Walking Panther” from a New York City estate, sold for $13,750 against an estimate of $3,000-$5,000, while Lot 1550, a George III dining table from a Connecticut estate sold for $8,250 against an estimate of $2,000-$4,000. “The top lot in Saturday’s

Kaminski (Continued from page 16)
eye-catching orange and yellow geometric print was the highest priced piece of the collection, reaching $3,900. A lithograph by master Henri Matisse also caught the eye of many collectors. Editioned 24/50 and signed in the plate, the print depicted a reclining nude stretched out on a chaise lounge and surrounded by floral shapes and patterns. After much competition, it sold for $6,765. A painting by French artist Raoul Dufy also sold well.
The small watercolor depicts the countryside of Provence and bears Dufy’s signature along with the Atelier Raoul Dufy stamp. The piece was bolstered by good provenance with a label from the Gerald Norman Gallery affixed to the back and a certificate issued by Arthur Tooth and Sons, London. The work fetched $19,680. With the conclusion of this successful sale, Kaminski looks forward to its next Modern and Contemporary Auction scheduled to be held Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015.
