Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Personal Effects All-Dairy As in previous years, And Sculpture Bring $1.28+ Million exhibitors displayed extensive collections of dairy-related At Heritage Auctions items, including: Earl Bennett (Continued from page 6)
The single largest archive of Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s personally-owned objects, from his signature polka-dot scarf, which realized $3,750, to the most ambitious sculpture executed by Renoir and Richard Guino, “La Grande Venus Victrix, temporarily stored in a shed after Renoir’s death, which realized $545,000, led an expansive grouping dedicated to the Impressionist icon in Heritage Auctions’ The Renoir Estate Collection Signature Auction, held Sept. 19 in New York. The sale totaled $1,285,563. “This collection provided an intimate glimpse inside the personal and professional life of Renoir, said Brian Roughton, Managing Director of Fine Arts at Heritage Auctions. “The worldwide interest generated by the event, and the signifi-
cant prices realized, show that Renoir is still as relevant and beloved today as he has ever been, continued Roughton. The widespread interest in
the collection translated into spirited bidding across the auction, with a majority of lots, especially Renoir’s correspondence and personal
papers, selling well in excess of their estimates. This museum-level collection is significant for its completeness in revealing volumes about Renoir, his art and his personal life. The Heritage event also represents the last time this collection will appear assembled ever again. Highlights of the 143 lots sold include “Les Becasse (The Woodcocks). It was one of, if not the last, painting done by Renoir in the final hours of his life. It sold for $125,000. Original copper engraving plates of Renoir works, along with glass plate negatives of Renoir, his family, models and paintings, sold for $35,000; Renoir’s spectacles sold for $6,250; and Renoir’s cigarette holder sold for $1,563. The online auction will feature over 200 lots of rare books, all relating to cats. Mrs. Zeehandelaar collected catoriented objects for more than 60 years and was the owner of “The Cat Book Center” which dealt in rare cat books. Gertrude Zeehandelaar (1922-2013) was a Holocaust survivor whose resilience and strength were forged during the Kindertransport. As a teenager, she was placed in charge of the evacuation of dozens of Jewish children from the Netherlands to Britain. Following the war, she lived in Cuba while awaiting entry to the United States. She raised her family in New Rochelle and Eastchester, N.Y. Her love of cats began as a little girl in Amsterdam
and remained a constant throughout her life. She gained a reputation as an authority on books regarding cats and wrote numerous book reviews. Highlights include books illustrated by artists Louis Wain, Wanda Gag, Clare Turlay Newberry, Beatrix Potter and many others. Also included are first editions, private presses, miniature books, and examples from as early as the 18th century. return flight from Martha’s Vineyard. His wife, AnnaLouise, was one of three survivors. After she recovered from her injuries, she wrapped Spann’s decoys in newspaper and packed them in cardboard boxes, where they remained until this spring. At that time, her daughter-in-law mentioned to Zac Cote at the Guyette, Schmidt, & Deeter Inc. gallery in Freeport, Maine, that they had some old decoys to sell, and that some were stamped “Elmer Crowell.” The following day, Gary Guyette was at the son and daughter-in-law’s Connecticut home, where the boxes of decoys had recently been hauled down from the attic. It was one of those exciting times to be in the decoy auction business, unwrapping piles of decoys that had been in storage for Bufflehead drake by Nathan Cobb Jr. from the James “Spann” over 50 years. blackducks followed original paint Elmer Crowell’s and Ira Hudson’s, as Gary unwrapped the decoys one after another. Each time he put his hand back into the box, he had no idea if he would pull out a $50 decoy or a $50,000 decoy. Spann collected at a time when there were great items just waiting to be picked, but little attention was paid to original paint. He explored sheds on Chincoteague, pulled ruddy ducks out of fishing shacks on Knott’s Island before Bill Mackey, and found Ward Brothers decoys stacked in Crisfield a few years before Somers Headley started picking there. Guyette, Schmidt, & Deeter Inc. is pleased to offer these newly “rediscovered” decoys in their November 2013 and February 2014 auctions. To learn more, visit www.guyetteandschmidt.com.

with early decoy collector Carter Smith. Smith told him about a William Basnight swan that he bought out of Raymond Rodgers’ barn loft in Wanchese, N.C. Smith wrote that there were four swans left, two with heads and two without heads. He suggested that Spann send a letter to Rodgers if he wanted one of them. In later correspondence, Smith wrote that “the Butler girl said you picked up the swan decoy. Give me the details when you have time.” He also gave Spann some advice: “When I say collect, I mean ‘for free’ or 2 bucks max; to hell with expensive stuff.” On Sept. 15, 1957, Spann, along with 27 other people, died when the plane they were in crashed at the New Bedford, Mass., airport on a

James “Spann” Jeffers was born in Alabama in 1911. During World War II, he was in the Signal Corps and stationed in Fort Monmouth, N.J., where he met and married Anna-Louise Campbell. After the war, he joined the OSS (Office of Strategic Services). He lived in Red Bank, N.J., but worked much of the time out of Martha’s Vineyard, Mass. He spent a great deal of time hunting waterfowl in North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Alabama, and Massachusetts in the late 1940s and early 1950s. During his many hunting trips, he collected decoys (usually single examples) as mementos. These were displayed in his office, where many were mounted on the walls. In 1952, he corresponded

Herbert Salzer was getting his master’s degree in Math and Applied Sciences at Columbia and was writing his thesis that cited work Einstein had abandoned a few years prior on Distant Parallelism Field Theory. Salzer, then 23 years old, found a mistake in Einstein’s first mathematical application and decided to write a letter explaining the issue. A few weeks later, Einstein wrote Salzer back and said while he applauded the student’s gumption, Salzer was mistaken. Two weeks passed, and Einstein wrote Salzer again after stepping away and reworking his equations. In the second letter, he apologized and stated three times (paraphrased) “Therefore you are right and I am wrong.” Herbert Salzer went on to complete his doctorate at Columbia, and he

Reading-Berks Guild Of Craftsmen To Hold Silent Art Auction Community Service for Pennsylvania and Early American Life magazine’s Traditional Artisan Award for four years in a row. The magazine also singled him out as one of the best craftspeople in his field. He received the Berks Arts Council’s Pagoda Award for Lifetime
Achievement in the Arts and won a major honor in the 1st International Pressed Flower Art Exhibition in Japan. He was the best-of-show judge for pressed flower entries at the 2011 Philadelphia Flower Show, and won numerous awards competing in that category. He also appeared at the Kutztown Folk Festival for 18 years.
According to Guild Education Chair, Carol Haile, the Guild has distributed thousands of dollars in scholarships through several specific awards programs. “Gene played an important role in maintaining the guild’s emphasis on helping students of every grade level, including students at Kutztown University,” Haile said. This year’s Holiday Show will feature more than 100 guild artisans offering museum-quality, handcrafted traditional and contemporary Santas, pressed flower art, tinware, Shaker boxes, rugs, paper cutting, folk art, ceramics, jewelry, photography, and other art. The donation to enter is $6. Admission for children under 12 and Kutztown University students will be free. There will be live music, food, free parking, and handicapped accessibility. For more details on the Gene Burkhart silent auction and the 64th Holiday Show, call 610-678-6650.

Michael Jordan’s Famed “Flu Game” Sneakers Join Growing List Of Consignments To Grey Flannel’s Holiday Catalog Auction The already impressive lineup of Major League sports treasures consigned to Grey Flannel’s Holiday Catalog Auction has just been upped a notch. The Long Island-based auction house has confirmed a new addition to the upcoming sale, which closes for bidding on Wednesday, Dec. 11: Michael Jordan’s sneakers from the fabled fifth game of the 1997 NBA Finals. The game pitted the Chicago Bulls against the Utah Jazz. It also set the stage for one of the signature moments in Michael Jordan’s second act with the Bulls. In basketball lore, it has become known as the “Flu Game.” Jordan’s long-time trainer Tim Grover says it was really more of a “Food Poisoning Game,” but regardless of what spurred it, Jordan fought off a 103-degree fever on June 11, 1997, to pour in
38 points, grab seven rebounds, dish five assists and hit a game-sealing threepointer in his 44th minute of play. This feat stands as one of the legendary performances in the career of the greatest basketball player of all-time. ESPN has ranked the “Flu Game” #2 on the list of Michael Jordan’s 50 Greatest Moments. Bidding on the shoes begins on Monday, Nov. 18. “We were approached by the Utah Jazz ball boy (from the “Flu Game”) because of our affiliation with the Basketball Hall of Fame,” said Grey Flannel Auctions’ Director of Operations Michael Russek. “He never thought about selling them before now. Recently he realized that he was getting a little older and was more curious than anything to see if people still cared about the story.” Russek and Grey Flannel are betting that prospective bidders will care quite a bit, which is why they pursued the shoes for consignment and inclusion in their Dec. 11 auction. “The shoes are accompa-
nied by a letter from the ball boy as well as an incredible photo of Jordan signing the shoes and handing them over after the game. The consignor wants someone else to have them who can display them better, as they’ve sat in a safety deposit box for the last 15plus years,” Russek said. He continued, “Also, I suspect that he probably wants to see just how much he can get for them. We (Grey Flannel) have rung up some pretty impressive prices on past items, including Boston Celtics great Dave Cowens’ 1972-73 NBA Most Valuable Player Award ($156,000); Julius Erving’s 1976 game-worn ABA All-Star jersey ($188,000); and the official scorer’s sheet from Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game, fetching more than $108,000.” Russek doesn’t figure the “Flu Game” kicks will net anything near those numbers, but he does predict the bidding on them will be competitive. Other highlights of the December auction include game-used jerseys worn by LeBron James, George Gervin, Miami Dolphins running back Larry Csonka, New York Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, Detroit Tigers outfielder Rocky Colavito and Pittsburgh Penguins center Mario Lemieux. Also included in the sale is a baseball autographed by members of the world champion 1928 Yankees, Elgin Baylor’s 1974 NBA All-Star Game trophy, the boxing gloves Sugar Ray Leonard wore in his 1984 win over Kevin Howard, and a 1932 NY Yankees World Championship player’s ring. Russek figures the “Flu Game” shoes will wind up at or near the top of that heap. “We do not assign estimates, but I expect the Jordan sneakers to be one of the highestpriced items in the sale, and other consignors will benefit from being in their good company,” he noted.
