Queen Anne “Vigo” Five-Guinea Coin Will Be Sold In London FRIDAY NOVEMBER 11, 2016 • VOL. 47, NO. 46

Gold And Bold Offerings At Cordier’s Fall Antique And Fine Art Auction

Boningtons auction house near London will auction one of Britain’s rarest coins on Wednesday, Nov. 16. The company is offering to bidders worldwide a coveted Queen Anne “Vigo” fiveguinea gold coin valued at $240,000-$300,000. The coin is one of only 20 that were made from the 7.5lbs of gold the British seized from Spanish treasure ships in Vigo Bay, northern Spain, on Oct. 23, 1702 - 314 years ago. It is one of only 15 known to have survived and is only the sixth example of its type to be offered for sale in the last 50 years. Remarkably, the coin had been kept in a little boy’s treasure box after having passed This is the 1703 Queen Anne “Vigo” five-guinea coin, obverse.

Cawman’s Mall In South Jersey To Celebrate 15 Years Sometimes retirement doesn’t last very long. A year after Amber and Butch Cawman retired from 25 years in the hardware business, with time hanging heavy on their hands, the two had Cawman’s Mall Antiques & Things up and running in the same building. “We only marked off about 15 percent of the floor space but very soon had to open up the rest of it,” said Amber Cawman. “We had about 10 to 15 vendors the first year and now have 40.” Amber Cawman runs the shop with a handful of faithful staff. Behind the scenes, Butch Cawman keeps everything in good repair.

The 25th Annual Holiday Train Show Opens Nov. 19

On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Dec. 2, 3 and 4, Cawman’s Mall will celebrate 15 years serving South Jersey with anniversary festivities featuring deep discounts by vendors, hourly door prizes, folk music and, on Saturday, a visit by Santa Claus. “Maybe we’ll have a couple of surprises, too,” said Amber Cawman. “We’re still working on it.” Cawman’s is an enticing amalgam – its 12,000 square-feet house everything from primitive antiques to mid-century modern to country decor. “I think diversity is one of our assets. Antiques At Kimberton Show Will Take Place On Nov. 19 And 20

Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society To Host Annual Pennsylvania German Folk Art Sale “What is folk art? It is a term rooted in the tradition of art made for a purpose: a beautiful quilt, a painted wooden chest, or a redware bowl,” says Emily Smucker Beidler, fraktur artist and folk art committee member. “All of these things have a useful, practical purpose but show a sensitive attention to beauty as well.” The Pennsylvania German Folk Art Sale will showcase modern pieces rooted in this same tradition. The sale begins with an opening reception from 6 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, at the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society in Lancaster, Pa. During the opening reception, there will be a chance to peruse the traditionally inspired work and meet the artists. Light refreshments will be served, and freshly baked pies will be available for purchase. Clarke Hess, in his authoritative book, “Mennonite Arts,” notes, “Pennsylvania German arts have long been collected for their vibrant colors, their

whimsical forms, and their exceptional craftsmanship.” This will be seen in the broad spectrum of traditional forms on display during the sale, produced by 27 local artists. They include fraktur, a “broken” method of lettering originally developed to illuminate manuscripts; ceramics such as redware, low-fired ceramics made with red clay; and scherenschnitte, intricate patterns and scenes cut from paper and wood. There will also be hand-woven textiles, baskets, hex signs, and more. “Our folk art show builds on this tradition of valuing thrift and creativity. The artists represented at our annual Christmas show demonstrate a rootedness to the notion of crafts that serve utilitarian purposes as well as contemporary approaches to the tools and materials we have available today,” said Beidler. During the opening reception, there will be demonstrations of fraktur by Emily Smucker Beidler, spinning by Willa Beidler, tufted-wool

embroidery by Ann Hermes, and wood graining by Jim King. The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society is located at 2215 Millstream Road in Lancaster, Pa. The evening is free and open to the public. During the opening reception, there will be a 20 percent percent discount on new books and CDs in the museum store. The folk art sale continues through Saturday, Dec. 31, during normal society operating hours, which are Tuesday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The Pennsylvania German Folk Art Sale is part of the Lancaster Roots 2016 program, which represents joint events organized by the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society and the 1719 Hans Herr House and Museum. Through public presentations, food, music, field trips, and stories, these events reveal Lancaster and its people: their stories, culture and history. We even have a small book store.” “Our vendors are like a big family, and our staff are always supportive and enthusiastic,” added Amber. “We all help each other, and that makes for a good atmosphere and a successful business.” Improvements and additional investments have come with success – the mall added air-conditioning three years ago and last year upgraded all its lighting to LEDs, all of which has strengthened the business. Customers have appreciated those efforts. At the end of September, the Cawmans learned that they have again been named the best consignment shop in Salem County. “It’s quite an honor.”

he was a young boy. However, he had no idea what it was worth until recently, when he showed it to our coin specialist, Gregory Tong,” said Boningtons spokesman Luke Bodalbhai. “Gregory immediately recognized the coin and informed the consignor of its value.” Stunned and delighted by the news, the consignor related the coin’s history. “My granddad travelled all over the world during his working life and collected many coins from the various countries where he had been,” the consignor said. “As a boy, I was into pirate treasure, so he gave me bags of coins to play with. As time passed, these coins went back into bags and boxes and were forgotten about. Then, after my granddad passed away, I rediscovered the coins and recalled how much I had enjoyed them as a boy. So I gave them to my own son to play with, including the Queen Anne ‘Vigo’ five-guinea. He kept it in his treasure box and

But the day-to-day rewards are even better. “People come in smiling. They have a good time, and they’re still smiling when they leave. And our semiannual yard sale is like a big social event,” said Amber. “We invite all our customers to come in and help us celebrate 15 years. Chaos, Competition And Card Grading: BGS Vs. PSA

Antiques & Collectibles

I am not a sports fan. This is one reason why I write so few articles about sportsrelated collectibles and memorabilia. I prefer to play less popular sports like golf, tennis, and racquetball, and I have little desire to watch televised sporting events like football and baseball. My love of science fiction, classic literature, and anything video game related is much too strong. My disdain for watching sports is so bad that I regularly wait for the yearly Big Game to be over and then go online and watch a recap of the best commercials. As a result, I rarely ever get invited to football parties by those who really know me. I only mention this because an important topic within the trade must be discussed - a comparison between the two most trusted collectible card grading companies in the business - PSA and BGS. Ironically, I use both companies, but not for grading sports cards. I use them to grade my collections of “Magic: The Gathering” and “Pokémon” game cards. Some of these vintage cards can be worth thousands of dollars each, and collectors look for third party graded cards in the highest grades possible. It is from this angle that I am writing this article and sharing my observations. As such, diehard sports card collectors may disagree with some of these observations, but rest assured, the same issues discussed here exist in both the graded sports card and nonsports card collecting fields alike. Before we compare both card grading companies in depth, a brief introduction to both grading companies is in order. PSA stands for Professional Sports Authenticator and is a division of the trusted Collector’s

receiving the coveted PSA 10 grade. Because PSA does not list any subgrades on its holder or make this information readily available to the public, outside of true BGS 10 graded cards, PSA 10 cards now hold a significant premium in the card grading marketplace. Unfortunately, this has caused chaos in the graded “Magic: The Gathering” marketplace, as a lot of higher end collectors will collect only either PSA 10 graded cards or BGS 9.5 or 10 graded cards with all 9.5 subgrades or higher. Cards that should be selling for a significant premium and graded BGS with a 9 subgrade or, heaven forbid, a true PSA 9 are simply not selling all that well or selling for a significant discount. This has caused collectors like myself to only buy cards graded a true 9.5 or higher. As a result, the average collector can no longer compete in this kind of marketplace due to the costs and overall risks involved. The difference in price between a PSA 9 and a PSA 10 on a card worth $1,000 can be $500 or more. The difference in price between a BGS 9.5 and all 9.5 subgrades and a BGS 9 can be just as significant. If the marketplace continues to exhibit these same polarities, a correction is due. There is no way prices can continue in this manner, especially on more recent collectible card games like “Magic: The Gathering” and “Pokémon” that have been in existence only since the 1990s and still have a lot of high grade collectibles sitting in uncertified condition. Even in the coveted sports card collecting market, some of these premiums are less than what is being seen in the non-sports card marketplace, but rest assured, thanks in part to half grades and subgrades, these same issues exist. Collectors of any kind of graded card may

Universe grading empire. If you collect coins, you most likely have heard of the Collector’s Universe before. They own PCGS, which is one of the most trusted coin graders opposite of NGC. The company started off grading sports cards and has since entered into grading nonsports related cards as well. PSA uses a simple 1 through 10 grading point system, with one being the lowest and 10 being the highest grade a submitter can achieve. The premiums paid on cards graded in PSA 10 condition can be multiples of a similar card graded in PSA 9 condition and exemplify the very best cards in existence. A search of completed auction records will verify just how much collectors are willing to pay for PSA 10 graded cards. Competing with PSA and capturing a large share of the market for graded collectibles is BGS. BGS is an abbreviation of Beckett Grading Services and uses a similar 10-point grading system as PSA, except with a unique twist. Ironically, it is this twist that is wreacking havoc in the graded card marketplace. Rather than just offering a simple 1 to 10 numerical grade for each card submitted, BGS has chosen to offer a coveted 9.5 grade as well as using sub grades to identify why a specific card graded the way it did. BGS assigns subgrades to the following areas: edges, surface, corners, and centering. This means that a card that scores an overall grade of 9.5 may have a combination of 9, 9.5, and even 10 subgrades! Unfortunately, rather than creating a more stable marketplace, this has instead started to cause a lot of confusion among collectors and dealers. While a PSA 10 is simply a PSA 10, a BGS 10 can have at least two 9.5 subgrades in any two of these areas noted. This is causing hardcore collectors to place a premium on PSA 10 graded cards and extreme premiums on the very few BGS 10 cards graded with full 10 subgrades (a true rarity in the grading world). This is causing so much confusion in the marketplace that some collectors are even trying to buy up a lot of the higher end BGS 9.5 graded cards and are sending them for grading through PSA in hopes of

and the Luna Park Arch, Central Tower, and Ticket Booth. All of the collection’s Coney Island models will be displayed in the Reflecting Pool of the Palms of the World Gallery in the Enid A. Haupt Conservatory. This year, the 30-foot-long Brooklyn Bridge will be relocated to the Palms Gallery, completing the Brooklyn scene. The Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge will also make its exhibition debut. The Holiday Train Show rolled out an expansion last year of more than 3,000 square-feet and the addition of an introductory short film about the exhibition’s behindthe-scenes magic. The response from visitors was overwhelmingly positive, and the expansion remains in place this year. In celebration of the 25th annual showcase, a new book titled “The Holiday Train Show: A City Within a City will be published. Dazzling full-page views of the entire spectacle make the experience come alive for readers, while essays explore the engineering of the tracks and bridges as well as notable featured trains. An illustrated checklist of every building in the garden’s collection is included. The book is the perfect gift that commemorates a visit to the Holiday Train Show and its 25 memorable years. Heritage Auctions’ American Art Sale Slated For Nov. 12 Heritage Auctions’ American Art Auction will offer a diverse grouping of 150 paintings, works on paper, and sculpture sourced from private collections nationwide. It will be held Saturday, Nov. 12. Highlights will include Theodore Robinson’s tour de force “Normandy Mother and Child” (Marie Trognon and Baby), 1892 (est. $300,000-$500,000). With provenance tracing directly back to the artist and extensive exhibition history, “Normandy Mother and Child” (Marie Trognon and Baby) is a museum-quality masterwork by an artist widely considered to be one of American’s greatest Impressionists. “We hand-curated this sale to offer the best of the best,” said Aviva Lehmann, director of American Art, New York. “We worked tirelessly to source stellar artworks from private collections across the country and anticipate collectors will be pleasantly surprised at what we’ve uncovered.” The auction’s diverse offerings will feature some of the most recognizable names in American Art. In the Hudson River School, George Inness’ “Evening Glow,” done in 1883, depicts a man with a cane strolling across a wheat field illuminated by a fiery orange sunset. The work marks a

Theodore Robinson’s painting “Normandy Mother and Child” (Marie Trognon and Baby) is among the stars in Heritage’s American Art Auction on Nov. 12. turning point in the artist’s career and stands as one of his first and finest “aesthetic” paintings ever accomplished (est. $120,000-$180,000). In the Western Art category, one of the most soughtafter lifetime castings of Frederic Remington’s iconic “Broncho Buster #17” (est. $200,000-$300,000) will be offered. This fine example of a Roman Bronze Works castings was sourced from a private California collection. Walter Ufer’s harmonious “A Ride in Autumn” (est. $300,000$500,000) exemplifies the vibrancy and poignant realism of the Taos School. In Illustration Art, “To the Vanquished” is considered

one of Joseph Christian Leyendecker’s best Saturday Evening Post covers. It will be estimated at $100,000-$150,000. Steven Dohanos’ “The Vacationers,” his Saturday Evening Post cover from 1951, perfectly turns small-town life into a charming and memorable masterpiece (est. $50,000-$70,000). In Modernism, “Green Meadow,” 1957 (est. $80,000-$120,000), by Milton Avery, was executed during a time of transition to simplified forms and blocks of color that we have come to associate with the artist’s most notable works. Making a rare appearance at auction is Morton Schamberg’s “Untitled,” from the “Machine” series, 1916 (est. $40,000-$60,000). Only 39 of Schamberg’s works have come up for auction in the past 30 years. His interest in machines is reflected in his art through Cubist imagery. “Untitled” comes from a private Texas collection and marks the first time ever to appear at auction. Another highlight will be Thomas Hart Benton’s “Main Street, USA,” 1926, which captures the early days of the Texas boomtown of Borger, the population of which sprouted from zero to 30,000 within 90 days (est. $40,000$60,000). available only to those attending at the gallery. The event is highlighted by part one of Tony Lasala’s collection of cast-iron automotive toys. An astute collector for many years, Lasala was able to acquire many rare and desirable pieces from early dealers and auctions. “The Tony Lasala collection is unquestionably an important one. Any toy associated with his name will continue to gain instant respect from knowledgeable collectors. The rarity and quality are obvious,” said Bertoia Auctions’ owner, Jeanne Bertoia. Day one is devoted primarily to American toys and banks and will open with castiron. Two of Lasala’s favorites are Lot 58, a Kenton City Telephone truck estimated at $4,000$6,000, a n d Lot 66, a circa1929 Arcade white Bekins moving van, $4,000-$6,000. Both were formerly in the Donald Kaufman collection. Prestigious provenance accompanies many of the American tin toys chosen for the Nov. 11 session. Two highlights that were pictured in Blair Whitton’s 1981 book, “American Clockwork Toys 1862-1900,” are Lot 718, one of only two known circa-1870 George Brown Automatic Waltzers, est. $10,000-$15,000, and Lot 712, an extremely rare Goodwin carriage – the only one Bertoia’s has ever seen with a seated child, est. $6,000-$8,000. Early Political Memorabilia On Center Stage At Hake’s Since 1967, Hake’s Americana has been the premier source for 200-plus categories of pop-culture memorabilia, all falling under the general heading of “fun.” The company’s motivated team of experts works tirelessly to bring the best of private collections to the auction marketplace. Their next big online, phone and absentee auction event, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, Nov. 15, 16, and 17, is packed with collector favorites and unique historical material. Since November is election month, Hake’s pulled out all the stops to secure political memorabilia that even the most advanced collectors would find irresistible. Among the top highlights is Lot 57, an 1872 miniature cloth “Flag of Chappaqua – Greeley & Brown” with associated original ephemera. The vibrant

$2,000-$5,000. Houdini memorabilia is so widely collected, it even has its own name - Houdiniana. A “magical” example of Houdiniana is Lot 1073, a hand-signed photo of the fabled illusionist. The inscription reads: “Harry Houdini Los Angeles Oct 5, 1907,” suggesting the photo may have been obtained at one of Houdini’s LA performances around that time. The portrait photo is estimated at $2,000-$5,000. One of the sale’s sweet spots is comic books, another Hake’s specialty. Of the more than 2,000 comics included in the November event, 400 are CGC-graded. The selection is comprehensive, spanning Golden Age through Modern productions, and includes many first issues, key first appearances, and high-grade copies. Topping the list are two bonafide classics. Lot 1354, a March/April 1941 issue of All Star Comics, features the first adventure of the Justice Society of America. With Larson pedigree, it is the only one of its kind that is CGC-graded 9.4 NM – the best condition of all known exam-

Published in May 1962 and one of the most sought after of all Silver Age comics, it contains the first appearance of the Hulk and is CGC-graded 6.0 Fine. Each of these stellar comic books is estimated at $10,000-$20,000. More than 100 lots of illustration, comic and animation art have been cataloged. Continued on page 14

Leading the selection is Lot 1753, Kay Nielsen’s (Danish, 1886-1957) spectacular 1940 original concept art from the Fantasia sequence titled “Night on Bald Mountain.” The colorful scene shows six demons dancing amid eerie green flames as three grotesque rock faces leer down from the mountain’s cliffs. Any Disney art by Nielsen is in great demand. This esoteric, wildly imaginative artwork should have no trouble reaching $5,000$10,000. A very special portion of the sale is allocated to archival rarities from the collection of master sculptor Tim Bruckner. His award-winning body of work for clients such as DC Direct, Mattel, Kenner, Hasbro and other industry giants has made Bruckner a legend in his own lifetime. Rago Arts And Auction Center Expands Into Westchester And Connecticut Rago Arts and Auction Center, a full-service auction house with annual sales of $33 million, is expanding its reach into Westchester County and Connecticut by adding a dedicated representative to the region. David Rago, founder of the New Jerseybased firm, recently outlined his vision for growth. “Since the rise of the internet, Rago has been serving clients that were once only the domain of the largest houses. We built our reputation on world class 20th and 21st century design, but we handle it all, and well. We’re market focused and innovative,” said Rago. “It’s astounding to think how quickly we’ve grown – my first New Jersey auction was in 1996, and 20 years later we’re selling pearls for $800,000, tiles for $600,000, Cartier for $500,000, Calder for $200,000 and more masterworks by Nakashima and Paul Evans than any auction house in the world. New York City has long been one of our key markets, and the natural next step is to invest in reaching our existing and new clients in Westchester and Connecticut, both sellers and buyers. A critical component of that effort is an experienced auction professional dedicated to driving this expansion.” Jennifer Pitman, formerly head of sale, silver at Christie’s, New York, and a 20-year auction veteran, will spearhead the expansion. Pitman, a Westchester County resident, sees a bright future for smaller firms like Rago. “Over the years we’ve seen the larger auction houses move away from a number of traditional collecting categories and increase the minimum value for property they will take. This shift leaves clients with fewer options and a lot of property up for grabs. The simplicity and competitiveness of Rago’s fee structure, their diverse sale categories, and their nimbleness

Jennifer Pitman has joined Rago Arts and Auction Center as it expands. and flexibility in working with clients makes them a very appealing option for clients,” said Pitman. Pitman says she’s eager to expand Rago’s loyal following by building the firm’s profile and client base in the region, embracing the firm’s entrepreneurial spirit and having fun doing it. Plans are afoot for lectures, sponsorships and valuation days, and a wide range of innovative ways to assist clients with appraisals, buying and selling. To learn more, visit www.ragoarts.com.
