Bertoia Auctions To Present The Distinguished Max N. Berry Collection On Nov. 14 And 15 Former Chairman Of The Board Of Trustees Of The Smithsonian Institution To Offer A Wealth Of Exquisite Rarities t this point in the evolution of antique toy and bank collecting, it could be argued that there are two basic groups of collectors: those who have had the privilege of viewing the Max N. Berry collection and those who will see it for the first time on Nov. 14 and 15 at Bertoia’s. Over those two days, the family-owned New Jersey company will auction a total of 479 lots of early toys

A

The J. & E. Stevens “Preacher in the Pulpit” cast-iron mechanical bank, circa 1876, with provenance including Dr. Arthur Corby, L.C. Hegarty, and Stanley Sax, is estimated at $150,000-$200,000.

and mechanical banks from the distinguished Berry collection, with nearly 100 lots planned for the Friday, Nov. 14, evening session, and the balance to follow on Saturday, Nov. 15. “I don’t know where you would go to top the Max Berry collection for ‘wow factor.’ Max has been astonishing his fellow collectors for decades, with one impossibly rare toy after another,” said Bertoia Auctions associate Rich Bertoia. “Max set his sights on buying primarily from pedigreed collections (with) name values (that) gave the toys and banks automatic

A cast-iron mechanical bank of unknown manufacture and reportedly given away by the American Sewing Machine Co., circa 1880s, is estimated at $12,000-$15,000.

provenance.” Of the nearly 200 mechanical banks to be offered in Bertoia’s November sale, many are so rare, they fall under the heading of “less than a handful known.” A prime example would be Berry’s 1880s “Darky Fisherman” mechanical bank, designed by Charles A. Bailey of Cobalt, Conn. Formerly in the Steven and Marilyn Steckbeck collection, it is one of only two known examples designed with an original fish dangling at the end of the fisherman’s line. Bertoia’s estimate is $225,000-$250,000. Another extraordinarily rare bank in the Berry collection is a J. & E. Stevens “Preacher at the Pulpit.” Patented in 1876 and one of three known, it comes to auction with a long and storied line of provenance that goes back to pioneer collector Dr. Arthur E. Corby. The estimate is $150,000$175,000. The only known original example of a circa-1890s “Target in Vestibule” mechanical bank, ex. Steckbeck and L.C. Hegarty collections, is of unknown American manufacture. In near-mint condition, it is estimated at $30,000$40,000. A rather obscure circa1878 “Rival” mechanical bank with a springing monkey figure could reach $30,000-$45,000, while a circa-1880 C.G. Bush “Clown on Bar” bank, ex. Hegarty collection, is estimated at $60,000$80,000. A horse-theme “Trotter” mechanical bank, purported to be the only surviving example, was made around 1890 by an unknown manufacturer. When a coin is dropped into the saddle, the horse’s front leg paws the ground. “There is a mold for a still bank that has a similar appearance, but being nonmechanical, it does not have a moving leg,” Bertoia noted. The horse bank is entered with an $18,000-$25,000 estimate. Other prizes include an 1882patented “Shoot That Hat” mechanical bank, est. $40,000-$60,000; an American Mechanical “Sewing Machine” bank, est. $18,000$22,000; and an 1884-patented “Presto Penny Changes to Quarter” bank that magically converts a deposited penny to a quarter. It will take much more than 25 cents to own this intriguing bank, which is

estimated at $40,000-$55,000. At the top tier of mechanical banks in the Max Berry collection are two original models, both made of lead, formerly in the Hegarty collection. One is a “Wishbone” bank in which two figures pull on a wishbone that comes apart; the other is a circa-1881 Charles A. Bailey-designed “Old Aunt Dinah and the Fairy.” Both of these patterns will be auctioned with an $80,000-$100,000 estimate. Collectors of tin banks will find many exciting rarities in the Berry collection, as well. The only known example of a Weeden clockwork “Chinese Ball Tosser,” with its original box, is expected to make $70,000-$90,000. Also featured are two Saalheimer & Strauss Mickey This Saalheimer & Strauss Mickey Mouse money boxes in very fine Mouse mechanical tin bank, circa condition, est. $15,000-$30,000 1930s, is estimated at $15,000(Continued on page 2)

$18,000.

The Ives Flying Artillery, circa 1890, is a classic American firefighting toy. It measures 21 inches long and is estimated at $2,500-$3,500.

This Marklin (Germany) oversize hansom cab, 28 inches long, is estimated at $15,000-$18,000.

About Max Berry:

each, and an extremely rare, German-made “Automatic Savings Bank” depicting a circus strongman punching a sailor character, est. $10,000+. A prominent Washington attorney and trusted highlevel political adviser, Max Berry purchased his first mechanical bank in 1967, but his toy buying didn’t begin until 1970. “In the beginning, the only reason I purchased toys was because I knew the big bank collectors wouldn’t sell their duplicates, but they would trade them if you had a rare toy to offer to them,” said Berry. “Before long, I was buying and collecting both toys and mechanical banks, and I ended up with a couple of thousand pieces in my collection.” Berry’s wise bartering strategy resulted in an enviable sub-collection of early

American horse-drawn castiron toys. Few would argue that the piece de resistance is an exquisite Ives “Cutter Sleigh,” the only one known that retains its original seated figure. The estimate is $125,000-$150,000. A Hubley “Revolving Monkey Cage Wagon,” one of possibly three known, could reach $75,000-$100,000. Additionally, many early cast-iron firefighting toys will be offered. A Who’s Who of bell toys includes many scarce pieces. A circa-1885 “Woman Drummer” is a quintessential American patriotic toy, depicting a seated woman in an open cart with eagle finial. As though in a parade, the center bell rings as the toy is pulled along. The estimate is $22,000-$25,000. Additionally, the auction offers a three-dimensional brass pattern for a bell toy called “Christmas Morning,” an endearing depiction of children with toys and a cat. It

was formerly in the collection of financier Edwin H. Mosler Jr. (1919-82) and reportedly was one of his favorite toys. Early American tin was another of Max Berry’s favorite categories, and he had his share of great examples from the finest makers, including George Brown, Althof Bergmann, Merriam, and Hall & Stafford. There are platform toys with suffragette figures and a menagerie of animals that

includes elephants, goats, and horses with trainers. Jeanne Bertoia, owner of Bertoia Auctions, said anyone wishing to learn about antique toys will have the perfect opportunity to do so at the preview and auction. “What makes Max so special as a collector is that his personal satisfaction has never been tied to the idea of amassing a large quantity of toys. His greatest pleasure has always come from sharing his

Our preview and auction are going to be welcoming, hospitable events to honor Max, whom we have no doubt will be the center of attention.” The Nov. 14 and 15 sale of the Max N. Berry collection of antique mechanical banks and toys will be held at

claim, at which point you were forced to provide a refund while hoping that when the buyer supposedly returned the original item to you it was actually in the box that arrived. Sellers had very little defense against the growing number of fraudulent buyers. To this day eBay has done very little to correct this growing problem. It is unfortunate but very few reported record sales you hear about dictated by the media for items sold on eBay are ever paid for. This is a growing problem in and of itself as it causes mass speculation and hysteria in various collecting fields that are not warranted. The individuals placing these bids realize this and know that little can be done to stop them. If all of these issues weren’t bad enough now, eBay sellers have a new issue to contend with. Thanks in part to a plea from wealthy investors, eBay has decided to segregate PayPal as a separate business. Under the new PayPal protection policy buyers now have six full months to make a claim against any seller. It is this new regulation that I find the most troublesome. With the rise of speculation in the antiques and collectibles marketplace, thanks in part to

write most of its own rules. One of the first true innovations that eBay brought to the marketplace was the advent of its own feedback system. This system allowed any buyer and seller the ability to comment on any transaction in which they were engaged in. Early on the system was virtually unregulated by eBay, with some restrictions as to what could be said and what could be left for others. Foul language and harassment were a reportable offense, but both buyers and sellers could leave feedback for any reason. This system worked well, except for the fact that the media continued to report on a glut of fraudulent online transactions that left some would be buyers afraid to use eBay. To rectify this matter eBay instituted strict buyer protection policies that forbid any seller from leaving negative feedback regarding a buyer. Unfortunately, this allowed shill bidders and less-thanhonest buyers to prey on unsuspecting sellers. Buyers were no longer understanding and apologetic. Under the new system they could do no wrong. If you failed to meet their demands you were faced with unfair feedback and the possibility of the buyer filing an unfair chargeback or a buyer protection

In 1995, a revolutionary new company was born that dramatically changed the way we buy and sell online. Originally called AuctionWeb, this new platform allowed anyone with an Internet connection and a dream to create a viable ecommerce business. As one of the first sellers and an early adopter of what is now known as eBay, I owe a lot of my early successes to this company. I sold my first classic video game on eBay back in 1995. It was that sale that turned me into a full blown eBay addict, and shortly thereafter a viable business was born. At that time eBay could do no wrong, and I had no problem with the rising fee structure that eBay had adopted at the height of the dot com boom. I was making money, and the site had more buyers than sellers at that time and that was all I cared about. Even as the new millennium came and went very few people had the desire or fortitude to learn how to sell on eBay. I was going to several flea markets, auctions, and thrift stores a week and was truly amazed at how much money I could make. I worked a full-time job and

attended college at this time, as I always knew in the back of my mind that this could all change. It was at this time that eBay had just started a very successful ad campaign, and even though the dot com bubble had already broken, people were starting to take notice. Pawn shops and thrift stores were the first to notice the droves of cyber sellers coming into their stores looking for undervalued wares to resell for a profit. It was at this time that a lot of thrift stores started selling on eBay themselves. The supply of a lot of common product almost dried up overnight and ended up online. Not only did resellers have to deal with a drought of inventory on store shelves, but now they were also competing with the same stores who once sold them their own inventory. An exotic little number in red and white with gold interior trim and grille, a 1954 Sunbeam Alpine Supreme, boasted a wealth of quality accessories. Offered with paperwork and prior-ownership history, it breezed past its $25,000-$35,000 estimate to secure a top bid of $50,600. Other big winners included the auction’s opening lot, a super-clean 1967 Ford Mustang GTA 2+2 in red with white trim, which brough $46,200, and a low-mileage, nearly all-original 1939 Ford Deluxe Coupe, which sold for $41,800. “It was very exciting for us to see the level of interest our first-ever Automobile

Auction generated,” said Morphy. “From the very beginning, we felt there was a niche in the marketplace for boutique events in which the emphasis was on quality, not quantity. The prices we were able to achieve and the outstanding bidder participation confirmed that we are on the right track with our approach. We will continue to offer fresh to the market collectible cars in an honest and transparent environment that serves both buyer and seller.” Morphy Auctions will hold its spring 2015 Automobile Auctions on Saturday, April 25, at Morphy’s Victorian Casino gallery in Las Vegas, Nev., and on Saturday, May 9, at the company’s flagship gallery in Denver, Pa. who just by giving me a platform to buy and sell, allowed me to grow my love of antiques and collectibles exponentially. I only wish This 1966 Chevrolet Corvette convertible sold for $71,500. they would allow others to experience the same kind of enthusiasm I was able to find so many years ago.

which began when antiquing with his father, became a clear choice for a career move. In 1989, Bryan made the leap and started his own business as an art and antiques dealer. Initially focusing on early American furniture and decorative accessories, Bryan discovered an opportunity to lead the fine arts market in the Midwest when he opened the Bryan H. Roberts Gallery in Bexley, Ohio, an affluent suburb of Columbus. Initially focusing on 19th- and early20th-century works of art, Bryan later broadened his scope to include present-day painters and in 2010 created a new venture, the BrandtRoberts Galleries, which is still located in Columbus’ vibrant Short North arts district. The new gallery, which

he co-owned with Michelle Brandt, expanded to include mid-century modern works and abstract expressionism. Over six decades, Garth’s has become an international force in the world of antiques and fine art, thriving in a competitive industry due to a renowned reputation and aggressive marketing and public relations strategies. Garth’s auctions are broadcast on every major Internet auction platform, as well as published in print and digitally to a database of nearly 60,000 collectors and dealers. Well-positioned just outside of Columbus, Ohio, Garth’s is located within 500 miles of 50 percent of the American population, allowing buyers and sellers to reach a broad audience much more affordably than when working with New York auction houses. “There has been this terrific shift to the Midwest as a serious selling venue for fine art and antiques,” explains Jeffers. “It’s pragmatic, the cost of doing business is less for our buyers and sellers, but we still bring the market. As we look at growing our business into Missouri, Florida, and the surrounding states, I hope sellers will continue to see the benefits of working with our team.” Bryan Roberts can be reached by calling Garth’s company headquarters at 740-362-4771.

On the heels of announcing the acquisition of legendary Selkirk Auctioneers & Appraisers in St. Louis, Mo., Garth’s Auctioneers & Appraisers of Columbus, Ohio, has now announced its expansion into the Florida market with the hire of a full-time representative based in Sarasota, Fla. Bryan Roberts, a 25-year veteran of the fine art and antiques industry, will service private clients, as well as professionals in the legal, wealth management, and trust and estate fields throughout the southeastern United States. “Bryan was a natural and a somewhat serendipitous hire,” said Garth’s CEO Jeff Jeffers. “At the same time that we considered an office in Florida, we learned that he and his wife were planning a move to the very area we hoped to land. Hiring someone with his expertise and experience was a nobrainer.” Roberts’ responsibilities will include confidential evaluations of single items and entire estates, auction consultation and consignment services. “We already serve a number of good collectors who are buying and selling out of the region. This will allow us to handle a larger volume of clients very efficiently.” Although Roberts began a professional career as a geologist with a degree from Virginia Tech, it wasn’t long before a passionate hobby,

JFK Wedding Negatives Sell For $34,000 At Auction A collection of 13 original negatives from the wedding of John F. and Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy sold at an online auction on Wednesday, Oct. 15, for $34,073, according to Boston-based RR Auction. John and Jacqueline Kennedy were married on Sept. 12, 1953, at St. Mary’s Church in Newport, R.I. Among the negatives were images of the wedding party, both of the newlyweds outside the church, and the couple cutting their wedding cake. The images were found in the darkroom of Arthur Borges by a family member after Borges’ passing in 1993. After much media attention, additional family members came forward detailing that they believed the images were most likely taken by another photographer, Frank Ataman, a colleague of Borges who had owned a bridal photography shop in Fall River, Mass. “The sale far exceeded our pre-auction estimates and continues to help establish us

for such unique specialty material,” said a spokesperson for RR Auction. The consignor of the lot said that the proceeds would be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project and an additional charity. The winning bidder was from Las Vegas, Nev., who commented that they were thrilled with the purchase, but wished to remain anonymous. Additional highlights from the sale include a vast collection of over 400 letters, documents, and other various formats spanning a remarkable seven centuries of church history, which sold for $90,676. A four page letter by Lord Byron sold for $36,093. An exceedingly rare John and Jacqueline Kennedy holiday card from 1963, signed mere days before the assassination, sold for $19,500. The online auction began on Sept. 26 and ended on Oct. 15. For further information and a complete list of results, visit www.rrauction.com.

pursued by both the French and the Spanish. While in Paris, he began compiling and editing books detailing these endeavors. These publications were eagerly accepted by students, politicians, and scholars and began to drive political and geographical actions the world over. In 1588, Hakluyt returned to England and the following year published the important work in its first edition that Alderfer’s will offer at auction. This work was a great driver in Great Britain’s decision to colonize the Americas. This book gave tangible reasons for the British government to pursue this endeavor, including trade opportunities, obtaining needed raw materials for the functioning of their society (including manufacturing and growth), spreading of the Church of England’s ecclesiastical power, and building of power for a country that had defeated Spain’s naval might just years earlier. This single volume first edition would grow and expand to a threevolume masterwork published from 1598 to 1600. During this time, the

machinery was put in motion for the eventual colonization of North America by the British at Jamestown, Va. (1607), and Plymouth, Mass. (1620). Also during this time Hakluyt was a member of the Virginia Company of London with the purpose of establishing Colonial settlements in North America. Hakluyt served as its director for some time. Hakluyt died in 1616 and was buried in Westminster Abbey. Hakluyt’s work “The Principal Navigations, Voiages, Traffiques and Discoueries of the English Nation” is considered by many as one of the most important English books on world exploration, with the single volume first edition selling at auction recently for close to a half million dollars. The volume coming up at Alderfer’s, in excellent condition, carries a pre-sale estimate of $100,000 to $150,000. The consignors purchased the book from a book dealer in the 1970s. On Thursday, Dec. 11, the Alderfer Auction Company will offer one of the most historic and important exploration books known as part of Alderfer’s quarterly Fine & Decorative Arts Auction. The book, “The Principal Navigations, Voiages, Traffiques and Discoueries of the English Nation” by Richard Hakluyt, was first printed in London in 1589 by George Bishop and Ralph Newberie, deputies to Christopher Barker. This first-edition book printed during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I was an instrument of the driving force that made English settlement and exploration of the New World a reality. The author of this rare volume, Hakluyt (15521616), was a scholar of great reputation, a priest in the Church of England, and part of the political machinery of the British Empire of the late 16th and early 17th century. While serving in Paris, Hakluyt spent a great deal of time learning and obtaining information regarding exploration and colonization that was then being actively

The Antiques At Kimberton Show Will Be Held On Nov. 15 And 16 The Antiques at Kimberton Show will be held on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 15 and 16, at the Kimberton Fairgrounds along Route 113 located two miles west of Phoenixville, Pa. Show hours will be on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. There are two buildings, and the event will feature over 60 dealers, some of whom have been in the show since the beginning. There will be over 10,000 square feet of space filled with antiques. The show has been running for over 40 years and takes place one weekend every March and November. “Our dealers are friendly

and informative. They will answer any questions a customer has about a piece they are selling. Customers seem to really enjoy the show and many return each March and November,” said show manager Lori Boger. “Our customers rave over the wide selection of pieces and fair prices. We hand-pick the dealers for every show to ensure quality and great selection. Buyers can find something special each time they visit, no matter what their taste or style. Many people are looking at antiques as a way to “go green” and reuse pieces in their homes. Our beautiful dealer displays show customers how to use antique items in new ways,”

said Boger. The show is extremely diverse. A few of the featured items include primitive furniture, miniatures, stoneware, architectural items, pottery, glassware, linens, and jewelry, as well as Native American artifacts, decoys, toys and tools. Admission will be $5 per person, or $4 with promotional show card, newspaper ad, or website ad. There will be sandwiches, soups, and beverages available for purchase, and parking is free. For more information, visit www.AntiquesAt Kimberton@vpweb.com, or call Lori Boger at 717-431-7322.

Both operations will continue to hold sales under each existing company’s banner. Upgrades will be

made to Conestoga’s facility, located at 780 Graystone Road outside of Manheim in Lancaster County, and John Hess will keep his facility at 1667 Cider Press Road in Manheim. Hess’ staff, however, will move offices to Conestoga’s building, according to DeHart. Hess has a large multifaceted operation selling a variety of real estate, including farms and farm equipment as well as both commercial and personal property. DeHart holds weekly household sales and semiregular antique catalog sales, in addition to real estate

property sales. “It is a natural fit, and I’m excited to be able to resource Jeff DeHart’s extensive knowledge and cataloging to better serve clients,” said Hess, president of John M. Hess Auction Service. The two companies will be able to cross-promote their offerings and handle all aspects of selling estates, notably historic farm properties, as staff will now oversee all aspects of antiques and real estate and/or equipment. If you’re like me, nothing is more nostalgic than taking a trip to the barber shop. As a child, I remember Saturday mornings when my dad would take me on his weekly visit downtown for a shave and a haircut. The red, white and blue striped pole welcomed us in and the atmosphere was heady with a combination of cigar smoke, Old Spice and talcum powder. Don the barber would dutifully clip and trim and lather and shave the lucky fella in his chair while the others sat around chewing the fat, talking about their jobs, the stock market and which bums were favored to win the pennant that year. When he was finished, my dad would have his hair slick with pomade and his face as smooth as a river rock. It was his reward for making it through another week. My rewards were the peppermint stick from Don and seeing my dad invigorated and re-charged by this ritual. It was a delightfully simple, yet rich, time. For the month of November, return to the bygone era of the barber shop at the Grist Mill Antiques Center in Pemberton, N.J. Our special display will evoke the memories of those little luxuries and troublefree times when men could retreat to the sanctuary of the barber shop and forget about their cares for a while. The brochure displayed in one of the accompanying photos depicts when the Santa Barbara Flower Festival celebrated its fifth year. (Some now consider this festival the ancestor of Pasadena’s Tournament of Roses.) The Oberammergau Passion Play was celebrating

its 300th anniversary when American Express organized in 1934 “Amex Oberammergau Tours of Europe,” which boasted one of the best cover designs of that era. The rear cover of “Panama Canal Hotels” (1927) exalts water sports. Florida used a handsome (Continued on page 21)

Pook & Pook Will Hold Online Only Decorative Arts Auction On Nov. 19 Pook & Pook Inc. will hold its second live onlineonly auction on Wednesday, Nov. 19. This Decorative Arts sale will include over 500 lots, all of which will be sold on the online bidding platform Bidsquare at www.bid square.com. First to cross the block will be an exciting collection of splint oak baskets by a range of skilled modern-day artists. Known for their creation of the “light vessel,” a style that creates the illusion

of a basket that is holding light, Darryl Arawjo and his wife, Karen, from Bethlehem, Pa., created baskets together for over three decades. What started as a hobby in the 1 9 7 0 s became a full-time profession in 1980. Several traditional examples from these well-known weavers are b e i n g offered at auction, including an impressive nest of twelve Nantucket baskets, signed and dated 2004 and expected to bring $800-$1,200. Another featured basket artist in this sale is Aaron Yakim, a West Virginia basket weaver who practices the tradition of Appalachian Mountain white oak basket making, a skill practiced by very few people today. Since starting basket making in the 1970s, all of Yakim’s baskets have been

made using hand tools and locally harvested weaving materials the artist gathers himself. Examples of the artist’s work being offered in this auction include a berry basket, an egg basket, and a lidded wall basket. A splint ash basket by M a r t h a Wetherbee is also set to cross the b l o c k . Wetherbee is known for her Shaker basket making. She is an author, a lecturer, and a nationally-recognized authority on the subject of Shaker baskets who has been featured in numerous publications and television programs. Other basket artists represented at the sale will include Cynthia Taylor, David Burns, Karen Wychock, and many others. Work by contemporary creators of fraktur, theorems, and other folk art will also be (Continued on page 22)

BASEBALL COLLECTIBLES!

(Continued from page 19)

64-page booklet in 1929 to encourage settlement. A great land boom there in the early ‘20s had come to an abrupt end thanks to hurricanes in 1925, which exploded the biggest real estate bubble America had ever seen. Tour organizers published some of the richest booklets that turn up regularly on Ebay. Thos. Cook & Son dominated this field by the 1890s and remains a leading travel agency/banker. Its travelers checks once rivaled in ubiquity those issued by American Express. In the United Kingdom the company became synonymous with continental rail travel through Thos. Cook Wagon Lits. The picture of the book printed with this article, from 1928, has one of its nicer covers. The 1914-15 George E. Marsters catalog with its polar bear cover [familiar from recent Coke ads] is one of the gems of my collection. I especially liked its link to the PanamaPacific Exposition in San Francisco. But the real surprises and joys awaiting collectors of travel ephemera are the delightful catalogs of Raymond & Whitcomb Co. of Boston. As a group they tower above other travel offerings. I would have liked to show a dozen great covers just as good as those pictured; examples include covers detailing Europe in 1926 and Round Africa and West Indies cruises, both in 1928. As an art historian I am intrigued by the subcategory of tours organized for students or specifically for art lovers. The Students Travel Club of New York was the primary provider of collegiate tours. The longest tour offered in the pitured catalog was 60 days and cost $695; this tour happened to be organized by Newcomb College, the female division of Tulane University already wellknown for its Art Nouveau pottery. The shortest tour was 24 days and cost $345. The Art Crafts Guild planned both adult and student art tours. Adult tour B5, with “native couriers; intelligent guides, promised to escort travelers around the world in 163 days. Unfortunately, no costs are given. Collegiate tours in 1927 ranged in length from 23 to 109 days and cost from $260 to $2,200. Railroads were fat and happy at the turn of the 20th century. The New York Central, Vanderbilt’s road, controlled New York when it issued in 1905 the issue of its monthly magazine FourTrack News entitled “The Summer Boarder. Few remember that anyone with means once fled cities come hot weather because they became sweltering, stinking plague zones. This piece describes hundreds of getaways, most as close as the Catskill and Adirondack mountains but others as

even Honolulu. A fascinating booklet from the Burlington lists, describes, and illustrates photographically numerous dude ranches, a few being summer camps for boys or girls. Alaska, America’s last frontier, spawned many beautiful publications, such as the one from the Canadian National railway system. Cruise-line literature tended to be richer still. Although many catalogs have artistically significant and beautiful covers, few can touch the example issued in 1925 for Canadian Pacific’s round-theworld cruises. Its heavy paper covers are deeply embossed. Interior pages look aged and grained; all illustrations are colorful drawings, many fullpage. This book deserves to be reproduced in facsimile. By contrast, United Fruit, which controlled Central America then, used small, modest booklets to recruit passengers for what it called its Great White Fleet [a name earlier bestowed on a fleet that the U. S. Navy sent on an around-the-world “goodwill tour.] Imagine now titling a booklet, as it did, “Following the Conquerors through the Caribbean. More modest and calmer cruises could be taken on “The Tideless Seas of North America offered by a division of Canada Steamship Lines. Truly cheap cruises could be had through Tramp Trips Inc. of New York. Its customers could choose among cruise ships, cargo ships, and freighters. A 100day South and East Africa trip by freighter cost $558. Quite a few beautiful publications were issued at sea. Better-grade ships issued passenger lists, daily menus, programs for entertainments, newspapers, and miscellaneous ephemera. I particularly like the Guest List shown here issued aboard the S. S. President Hoover, of the Dollar Steamship Line, which sailed from San Francisco on September 26, 1937. It lists the passengers by destination, beginning with those going around the world, with others disembarking in places like Honolulu, Yokahama, and Manila. Japanese-ship ephemera is common, such as a program for a “concert & entertainment aboard the S. S. Taiyo Maru on July 3, 1924. Auto travel literature is more diverse but less lavish than other categories because it was often produced cheaply by small, independent businesses. An exception is “Tour Europe in Your Own Car, which although it looks like a booklet actually unfolds into a huge “Automobile Road Map of Western Europe. Its corporate parentage explains its lavishness, being issued in 1927 by the International Mercantile Marine Co. on behalf of the White Star, Red Star, Atlantic Transport, and Leyland lines. One had to transport one’s car by ship, of course, to drive it in Europe.

www.antiquesandauctionnews.net “Motor to Canada owed its richness to Canadian Pacific sponsorship. This booklet directed motorists to hotels owned by the railroad. Carless Americans could visit many of the spectacles of “This Amazing America aboard the buses of Greyhound Lines, already the leading interstate bus company. Travelers by any mode in 1933 would find hotels in all price ranges conveniently listed in the “Travelers Hotel Guide, the “Official Directory of the National Hotel Protective Association. The most expensive hotels listed, at $9 a night, were the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs and the Emerald Lake Chalet, in Field, British Columbia. (By contrast, the Waldorf-Astoria

Antiques & Auction News — November 14, 2014 - - 21

in New York was $6.) Hotels in resorts like Banff and Coronado Beach tended to be around double the average cost of a good hotel, such as the Palmer House in Chicago at $4, possibly because on the American Plan some meals were included. The actual sponsor of their booklet was the Hotel Credit Letter Company of New York. The letters it issued authorized “hotels in the United States and Canada to cash voucherdrafts, firm checks and personal checks. We forget now the fiscal/logistical difficulties travelers faced before the appearance of the first general credit cards, Am Ex purple, Diners Club, and Carte Blanche, just over half a century ago. The publications mentioned and depicted with this

article were all were acquired via Ebay within the past 10 years. None cost more than $20, and most were less than $10. Some were derisively cheap. It is a fun field for any level of

collector to enter. In just the past month I have picked up an additional fine Raymond Whitcomb and a superb Students Travel Club catalog for around $10 each. So can you.

(Santa, eagles, bird tree, birds, etc.) and Walter and June Gottshall (rooster, ear of corn, toys, deer, etc.) are featured in the sale. One of the most unique inclusions in the Nov. 19th sale is the large consignment of outsider art. Outsider art is defined as art produced by self-taught artists who are not part of the artistic establishment. Artists presented in this auction include several well-known individuals in the field of outsider art along with a number of unsigned pieces. William Skrips grew up in a house filled with objects his father collected, but never utilized. Today, Skrips creates his art by re-using found and discarded objects. A mermaid by Skrips carries an estimate of $100$150. An interesting piece by Harold Willeto, son of Charlie Willeto, the medicine man turned folk artist, is unique, but also very reminiscent of his father’s work. The carved and painted Native American

figure in this sale is expected to bring $75-$150. A number of pieces by Minnie Adkins are up for sale, including a fox ($100-$200), a bear ($100-$200), an opossum with its babies ($100-$200), and a tiger ($100$200). Adkins, a folk artist from Kentucky, started whittling wood as a small child and today is best known for her wood carvings of animals. Another featured artist is Roy Pace, a Tennessee native. At Christmas in 1973, he received a book on woodcarving and then spent the next three decades perfecting his own style of it. Unfortunately, because of macular degeneration, his career as an artist was cut short. His last piece was finished in 2004. Through his carvings, Roy Pace conveys the lives of working class and historical individuals of Tennessee. A carving of figures seated at a table with a ballot box by Pace is estimated to bring $150-$200.
