Chihuly Glass Returns To The Reading Public Museum FRIDAY NOVEMBER 18, 2016 • VOL. 47, NO. 47

English Wooden Doll Dated 1739 Realizes $44,000 At Theriault’s When Estelle Johnston began seeking early 18th and 19th century wooden dolls in the 1960s, there were few collectors to keep her company. Serious doll collecting was in its infancy, and few journals or books were available to budding collectors. She was pretty much on her own. Yet a half century of doll collecting later, it is obvious that the rest of collectors have caught up. At Theriault’s Oct. 1 and 2 auction of her important collection of early wooden and paper mache dolls, prices skyrocketed, with interest from around the world. There were hints as to the desirability of these early dolls prior to the auction, as a record number of catalogs were sold, and collectors called eagerly with knowledgeable questions and to reserve telephone lines for live bidding. The excitement began within the first 10 minutes of the sale as lot #4, an early 15-inch Grodnertal wooden doll with original costume realized $18,000 (est. $7,500$9,500). It was followed by a grandsized Grodnertal lady with painted bodice that rushed to $19,000, twice its high presale estimate. Keeping right in step was the next lot, a 28inch English wooden doll in original costume with coin pocket dated 1739, which topped at $44,000 (est. $12,000-$18,000). Enthusiasm continued unabated over the two days of the auction. An 18th-century Venetian court doll in historical costume sold for $10,000 (est. $5,500-$7,500), an early Continental cage-skirt doll with exceptional sculpting brought $6,750, and a petite 12-inch wooden lady with carved ringlet curled hair

The regal English wooden doll, whose embroidered hidden coin pocket dated her at 1739, soared to $44,000 (est. $12,000-$18,000).

The Reading Public Museum (RPM) is pleased to present “Chihuly’s Venetians: The George R. Stroemple Collection,” on display until Sunday, Jan. 8, 2017. Unlike the exhibition hosted at the museum in 2004, which showcased work from Chihuly’s studio, this exhibition features a private collection of works owned by a single collector, George R. Stroemple. The exhibition includes the master glassmaker’s spectacular Laguna Murano Chandelier and 60 luminous examples from his acclaimed Venetian series, as well as more than a dozen drawings. The exhibition is sponsored locally by Tompkins VIST Bank. Chihuly’s Venetians were inspired by the artist’s trip to Venice in 1988. During this trip, he visited a gallery that housed an extraordinary private collection of Venetian glass that represented the pinnacle of Venetian Art Deco (1920s and 1930s). Returning to the United States, he decided to create his own versions of the classic pieces with his unique, lively twist. Collaborating with Pino Signoretto and Lino Tagliapietra, two of Italy’s finest glassmaking

A highly characterized lady doll, with attached provenance note suggesting that the doll was meant to represent the French author Georges Sands, climbed quickly to $10,000, and the tiniest of classic English wooden dolls, only five inches, in original costume and storage box, sold for $12,000, more than four times its high presale estimate. Early wooden dolls were only a small portion of this collection. Johnston had sought the esoteric and unique in all categories of antique childhood objects. The collection included such rarities as early mica overlay dolls, known as “metamorphose” and considered the earliest forms of “paper dolls.” Two rare sets soared to $5,000 each, tripling their presale value. A German porcelain doll (the auction presented dozens of rare examples) by KPM in original Scottish costume topped at $19,000 (est. $3,500-$4,500); a French bisque poupée with wooden body by Jumeau, costumed as a very dapper gentleman, sold for $11,000 (est. $4,000-$6,500); and a French Continued on page 4

Peter Saul Painting Sets Record At Leslie Hindman Auctioneers

Peter Saul’s acrylic-on-canvas painting titled “Saul’s Guernica,” 1974, is 71-by-159 inches and sold for $575,000, setting a new artist record at auction. The Sept. 30 Modern and Contemporary Art auction at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers offered a monumental Peter Saul with a presale estimate of $250,000∆$350,000. “Saul’s Guernica,” 1974, sold for $575,000, setting a record for the artist at auction. Hindman is based in Chicago, Ill.

Fernand Léger’s “Paysage village,” 1914, is a 12.5-by-16-inch gouache-on-paperboard and sold for $725,000.

The fluorescent psychedelic painting is an interpretation of Pablo Picasso’s famed 1937 anti-war piece, “Guernica,” depicting the atrocities of the Spanish Civil War. Saul’s 1974 version, “Saul’s Guernica,” is an art historical riff reflecting his own objections to the Vietnam War. Its large scale and vibrant colors showcase Saul’s melting cartoon imagery and surrealist funk approach to painting. Alternate versions of the painting have previously sold at auction in 2007 and 2008. The painting was offered from the estate of Robert and Lois Orchard of St. Louis, Mo., and sold to a West Coast buyer. Additional highlights of the sale include two works by Fernand Léger, a painting titled “Deux femmes tenant des fleurs” from 1954 that sold for Continued on page 6

Among the tableware on display are istoriato plates and dishes - their surfaces covered with scenes from mythology and ancient history - from important services commissioned by leading Italian families. The exhibition also shows maiolicamakers using ceramic, glaze, and pigments to compete with other art forms, including a Madonna and Child that imitates a framed panel painting. Also on view is a stunning Lamentation sculpture that likely once functioned as an altarpiece. It is the largest known example of sculptural maiolica to survive and has not been on public view in recent years. The exhibition is organized by Peter Jonathan Bell, assistant curator in the department of European sculpture and decorative arts at The Met. It is located at the Wrightsman exhibition gallery, gallery 521, within The Met. On Saturday, Nov. 19, Pook & Pook Inc. will join forces with Stuart Kingston Galleries to present a tax-free jewelry and fine art auction out of Stuart Kingston’s Wilmington, Del., gallery. Founded in 1930 by Maurice Stein, Stuart Kingston Galleries is now run by Maurice’s son, James, and grandson, Edward. The company specializes in contemporary and estate jewelry and fine art. Over their 80-year history, Stuart Kingston Galleries has presented several auctions of jewelry and fine art, though in recent years has emphasized the retail facet of the business. James Stein was quoted saying that the collaboration with Pook & Pook Inc. will bring the company “back to its (auction) roots.” Pook & Pook Inc., a leading East Coast auction house, is best known for fine and decorative arts, though has had success auctioning jewelry independently in dedicated sales. Ron Pook hopes that partnering with the respected jewelry experts at Stuart Kingston Galleries will solidify Pook & Pook Inc.’s status as a powerhouse within the jewelry market and is

An exhibition of Renaissance maiolica from The Met’s world-renowned collection celebrates the publication of “Maiolica, Italian Renaissance Ceramics in The Metropolitan Museum of Art,” by Timothy Wilson. As Wilson has written, “Painted pottery, at its most ambitious, is a serious form of Italian Renaissance art, with much to offer those interested in the wider culture of this astoundingly creative period.” This creativity was applied to a vast range of practical objects. “Renaissance Maiolica: Painted Pottery for Shelf and Table” explores the relationships among decoration, function, and display so critical to maiolica and yet so different from those of canvas or panel paintings of the same period. It includes tableware and serving vessels, desk accessories, storage containers, devotional objects, as well as sculpture, all made in painted and tinglazed earthenware. The maiolica tradition flourished from the 15th to the 17th century. Italian potters transformed techniques that they owed to the Islamic world into something entirely unprecedented, and in turn laid the foundations for other tin-glazed pottery traditions in Europe. Renaissance potters and pottery painters exploited innovations of the

COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: Aaargh! out that I came to realize that it was fake. How did I make the mistake? Well, in some respects it begins with the emotion of collecting. I saw a piece nearly identical to this in a collection 40 years ago. I loved it then, but the collector wanted an

astronomical price for the piece. Alas, I did not acquire it. Now, many decades later, I saw nearly the same piece, and it spoke to me. I had to have it. I have learned my lesson, but where do I go from here? Well, the piece did come with

a guarantee from the seller, and so in the weeks to come, I will return it. Before I do, however, I am going to step back and look at it one more time to make sure my analysis is true. I am sure that it is a fake, but I will cross my fingers for one final look.

Any collector who has not purchased at least one fake is either very lucky or perhaps not very honest with him/herself. All of us can point to times in the past where we have purchased fake items. We all believe that we have learned our lessons and would never make the same mistake again. About two months ago, I purchased a lovely and expensive fake. I have to say that I still

that is available to us - the Internet. I discovered that there was a well-known faker in Austria who was making reproductions of this item. Interestingly, the faker was rather clever in that he was/is using mundane items of little value but joining them together to make something very rare. As such, the sum of the parts was quite valuable, but the individual items not so much. As I read online, there were several clues provided in identifying the work of this faker. Certain colors and qualities of materials. As I went over my piece, I came to realize that all the clues pointed to a fake. I recall it was a rainy night with my magnifying glass

hold a sliver of hope that it might be genuine, but realistically speaking, it is a fake. It will live with me in my collection as a reminder of how fakes are never really very far from any of us. The piece was purchased from a dealer who has an excellent reputation. When it arrived, there were a few quiet alarm bells in my head. The piece was in excellent condition, which always makes me nervous. How long do items stay in perfect shape - especially if they are of mixed media? But I set it aside with the thoughts that it had been well cared for and was certainly genuine. Then I began to use the most powerful forensic tool

faience miniature desk, perfect for display with a 12-inch doll, topped at $3,000 (est. $9,000-$14,000). Intrigued by miniaturia, especially as it related to accessories for dolls, Johnston’s collection included examples that seldom appear on today’s market. Many were sold in small lots to appreciative collectors, while others appeared in single lots. An example of the latter was the rare tiny French porcelain de Paris bourdaloue, a thimble-sized, oval-shaped chamber pot legendarily named for Pere Louis Boudaloue, a priest in the court of Louis XIV whose sermons were said to be so long that ladies’ maids attended them at services with this specially-shaped pot at the ready. Estimated at a conservative $400-$600, the bourdaloue sold for $3,000. More than 450 lots were sold at the auction, each presented in a full-color catalog with intriguing historical information. Venetians (without putti); 42 Piccolo Venetians, the smaller but no less spirited vessels originally based on traditional Venetian themes; and three Bottlestoppers, monumental vessels inspired by perfume bottles. “Internationally renowned glass-maker Dale Chihuly’s creations will be sure to dazzle visitors of all ages with color, light and movement, said Scott Schweigert, RPM’s curator of

Hindman

art and civilization. “Like their Art Deco prototypes, a sense of function endures in ‘Chihuly’s Venetians.’ The core forms cones, cylinders, amphorae, bowls, ginger jars - suggest familiar vessels. Yet, if

vessels imply reason, Chihuly’s applied ornamentation overwhelms in an organic flourish. The symmetrical core becomes a stoic base from which feathers, leaves, and ribbons burst forth. Handles spiral into disorder; lilies entwine exterior surfaces; glass prunts transform into scalloped flames. Iridescent, foiled, layered and mottled, both the vessel and the ornament boast active ‘Chihuly’ sufaces, according to author Kathryn Kanjo. About the Reading Public Museum The Reading Public Museum is supported in part by grants from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and is located at 500 Museum Road, Reading, Pa. Admission per day is $10 for adults (18-64), $6 for children/seniors/college students (w/ID) and free of charge to members and children 3 years old and under. The museum is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, visit www.readingpublicmuseum.org.

Heritage Fall Sports Catalog Auction Will Include Nearly 5,000 Lots The largest sports collectibles auction of 2016 is now open for bidding at Heritage Auctions and is expected to command over $10 million for its nearly 5,000 lots. The sale is anchored by elite examples of the fabled T206 This 1958 Ted Williams game-worn Boston Red Sox jersey is estimated at $100,000-plus. Honus Wagner (est. $800,000-plus) and 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle rookie (est. $1 million), as well as important player collections from Gary Carter, Monte Irvin, and Larry Brown, among others. “We’ve known that this auction was going to be something truly special since The National in August,” said Chris Ivy, director of Heritage Sports Collectibles. “That’s where we picked up the Wagner and the Mantle, which should alone account for more than $2 million on the ledger.” Most experts estimate the surviving population of T206 Wagners at 50 or 60, and the

offered example is one of the more attractive representations of that rare breed. While the Mantle rookie is considerably more plentiful, the PSA NM-MT+ 8.5 quality assessment places it in the top dozen of all known entries. Noteworthy offerings from “Session One, Trading Cards,” which closes in extended bidding format on Thursday, Nov. 17, include PSA Mint 9 rookie cards of Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Hank Aaron, Ernie Banks, Frank Robinson, Bob Gibson, Nolan Ryan, Johnny Unitas and Jim Brown, and the finest PSA Player Registry Set for Yankees Hall of Famer Yogi Berra. “Session Two, Memorabilia” begins with the Gary Carter collection of more than 400 lots collected over a period of decades by the 2003 Baseball Hall of Fame inductee. Most noteworthy is the baseball that recorded the last out of the 1986 World Series, finalizing an unlikely New York Mets World

Championship made possible by Boston Red Sox first baseman Bill Buckner’s notorious fielding error in Game Six. Also on offer will be an array of Carter hardware, including Silver Sluggers and a Gold Glove, as well as game-worn uniforms, All-Star Game rings, and autographed material from other sports legends who crossed Carter’s path over the years. Player collections are a major theme of this event, with Carter’s fellow Baseball Hall of Famers Brooks

Robinson and Monte Irvin supplying important personal keepsakes, as well as Mort Cooper, Denny McLain, Larry Brown, Ken Aspromonte and others. One of the most significant personal collections of Olympic Games memorabilia will tempt advanced collectors of that challenging theme, as the Harmer Johnson collection presents an array of medals, badges, torches and more, such as an 1896 Athens Summer Olympics First Place Silver

Medal (est. $100,000-plus) and a 1908 London Summer Olympics Gold First Place Medal Presented to Sybil “Queenie” Newall (est. $20,000-plus) and what is the oldest item ever sold by Heritage Auctions Sports - a circa First Century A.D. Roman Bronze Olympic discus (est. $8,000-plus). The top lot of Session Two recalls a far more cerebral form of competition. It is the chess board upon which Bobby Fischer claimed a key Cold War victory over Russian

grandmaster Boris Spassky in the 1972 World Chess Championship, arguably the most famous chess tournament in history. A wide array of game-used uniforms and gear, Championship rings and trophies, programs and tickets and all manner of sports ephemera rounds out the session, which closes in extended bidding format on Friday, Nov. 18. Additional highlights include a 1916 M101-4 Sporting News Babe Ruth Continued on page 11

Firearms Auctions In Maine Gross Over $18 Million Annie Oakley’s Personal 12 Gauge William Cashmore Boxlock Sells For $207,000 Every year in October, two separate firearms auction companies conduct a firearms auction back to back in Fairfield, Maine. Each time these combined auctions occur, the results generate an enormous sale gross. The Oct. 1 to 3 auction began with a large offering of collectable and shooting firearms presented by the Poulin Auction Company. Their sale generated approximately $3.4 million in total. Immediately after, from Oct. 4 to 7, the James D. Julia Auction generated approximately $15 million in sales; 372 lots brought $10,000 or more, 173 lots brought $20,000 or more, and 33 lots brought in an excess of $50,000. The Julia auction was divided into four sessions. The first two days comprised Julia’s Sporting and Collector sessions, which featured moderately priced collectable and shooting firearms. The next two days made up what was titled its Extraordinary Sessions featuring rare and high-end firearms. Once again, Julia’s auction included numerous outstanding collections. Day one included a rare cased Browning Pointer grade Superposed two bbl. set from the estate collection of William Larkin Moore, estimated at

boards did better than the rifles. A rare and desirable Inverted V 1888 Cartridge Board estimated at $15,000-$25,000 was hotly competed for until it finally realized $37,375. A rare Deluxe Conrad Ulrich engraved exhibition quality Marlin Model 1893 with gold and platinum inlays that was estimated at $50,000-$100,000 sold just a little over low estimate at $57,500. A number of antique percussion Colts were offered. The high price realized was for a cased Ehlers Baby Paterson, which came onto the auction block with a presale estimate of $110,000-$160,000 and realized $115,000. A rare Colt 1883 U.S. Navy Gatling gun on its original bronze tripod was estimated at $175,000-$250,000. It

The Krider LeMat Pattern Revolver SN 2 was believed to be the personal revolver of Col. Alexander LeMat. It was formerly in the Cliff Young collection and came to the auction with a $60,000-$80,000 presale estimate. It realized $120,750.

An exceptionally rare 410 Ivo Fabbri Sidelock Ejector gun The small bore Fabbri pinless Sidelock O/U in 20 ga. was from the Robert E. Petersen collection carried a presale estimated at $40,000-$60,000 but blew way beyond high estimate of $75,000-$125,000 and realized $74,750. estimate to bring $109,250. sold for $174,800. One spectacular work of art was the magnificent Royal Wheelock sporting rifle by Samuel Kluge in Landshut. The gun was made for either King Charles XI of Sweden or King Christian V of Denmark. The gun was at one time the property of the Rothschild family and sold for $115,000. It is believed to be one of the highest priced Wheelocks sold in many years. Other areas that Julia’s has performed well with for many years is with Civil War and Confederate items. Julia’s consultant and firearms expert John Sexton is an authority on Confederate arms. A rare and historic pair of fluted Armies of Lt. John Low, CSN, used on the CSS Alabama came to the block with a $25,000-$50,000 estimate and flew to $51,750 because of the Confederate association. The most exciting Confederate lot of the day, however, was a Krider LeMat Revolver SN 2 believed to be the personal firearm of Col. LeMat himself. It came to the

auction with a presale estimate of $60,000-$80,000 and sold for $120,750. Also a spectacular Leech & Rigdon Confederate revolver captured at the Battle of Mobile Bay taken from the ironclad CSS Tennessee sold for $57,500. A number of rare Bowie knives were offered. Included was an American Gravely & Wreaks Guardless Coffin Handle Bowie knife. Estimated at $40,000-$60,000, it generated $40,250. A spectacular and unique Breech loading presentation firearm engraved by Gustav Young and formerly the personal property of William Marston himself was estimated at $30,000-$50,000 and sold for $40,250. An engraved early brass framed Warner revolving percussion rifle believed to be the finest example extent was estimated at $20,000-$30,000 and flew to $46,000. One notable lot was a personal grouping of items formerly owned by General George Armstrong Custer, including his map of the Indian Territories, a

camp chair, various images and an actual lock of his golden hair. The grouping had been consigned directly from Custer family members and had previously always been in the family. Here it brought $45,000. “We were overall very pleased with the auction outcome. Prior to the sale, we had received reports from dealers and show participants alike who had been reporting lackluster sales. Our concerns were allayed once our auction started. The Sporting and Collectable sale overall performed well both days in all niches, and on the third day, we started off with Class-3, which did exceedingly well. Lugers were soft, but have been for a while because of the overabundance on the marketplace. We then progressed to sporting arms, which is an area where we normally generate superior results. Once again, very positive. Sporting rifles, quality high grade shotguns did very well overall. It was not until the
