First Kyle Moore Collection Sale Tops $4.4 Million Morphy Auctions Will Hold Four Sales For World-Class Collection There’s no getting around the fact that globes are very popular among car enthusiasts. A Bengal Green Gasoline with logo 15-inch single lens, estimated at $5,000$10,000, roared to $24,400, while a Superior Gasoline lenses new HP metal globe body took the high road to realize $23,180 on its $5,000-$8,000 estimate. A Speedway Lens original red ripple globe body that realized $23,180 and a rare Standard Oil chimney cap etched OPC that realized $18,300 rounded out these globe highlights. Both were estimated at $5,000-$8,000 each. Buyers could not help getting pumped up over this auction’s selection of gas pumps. A very rare Service Station Equipment Ecometer gas pump, estimated at $20,000-$40,000, sold for $61,000, while a Raymond “4 in 1 Justice” five gallon visible gas pump, estimated $15,000-$20,000, flexed its muscles to realize $46,360. As with any auction, this sales event offered good values for those willing to go off the beaten path. It was a Sunday drive for bidders who scored a Packard service sign, estimated at $20,000-$40,000, which sold for $14,030; an Evangeline Gasoline with logo A Bengal Green Gasoline globe This Packard service sign sold for sign, estimated for $15,000roared to $24,400. $14,030. $30,000, sold for $12,200; and a nthusiasts just couldn’t get enough of Morphy Auctions’ Oct. 5 Automobilia and Petroliana sales event, so much that the reserved-seating-only auction lasted almost 11 hours. This first of four planned sales featured 800 of the finest oil- and gas-related signs,

globes, and pumps and had practically a 100 percent sell-through rate. After the hammer fell for the last time, 91 lots realized $10,000 or above. In addition, 17 lots realized $25,000 or more, and seven lots over $50,000. Bird was the word with a Polly SSP diecut neon sign. It was estimated at $70,000$100,000 and realized $91,500. A Kelly Tires with “Lotta Miles” logo sign rolled right over its estimate of $50,000-$80,000 to realize $90,280. Also of interest was a Harbor Petroleum Products with seaplane logo sign with a $35,000-$50,000 estimate that sold for $73,200. Canadian Double 10-gallon visible gas pump, estimated at $20,000$40,000, sold for $16,470. “This first of four oil and gas sales events featuring the amazing Kyle Moore collection truly achieved astonishing results. However, given the quality and scope of the items on offer, I am not surprised at how enthusiastically the collecting community embraced this buying opportunity. I look forward to presenting 1,200 more lots from the Moore collection at our upcoming two-day Petroliana/Automobilia sales event on Jan. 9 and 10, 2016,” said Dan Matthews, division head of petroliana/automobilia at Morphy Auctions. Only Known One-Sheet For “Tarzan The Ape Man” Comes Up For Auction he only known Style D one-sheet for MGM’s 1932 classic “Tarzan the Ape Man,” notable for accurately depicting star Johnny Weissmuller as he actually appears in the film, is estimated to sell for $40,000 to $80,000 in Heritage Auctions’ next Vintage Movie Poster Auction, but with no recent sales that range is just a guess. Offering more than 1,000 vintage posters and movie-related memorabilia, the auction holds an extensive collection of animationthemed posters, rare pre-war paper and an extraordinary selection of seldom-seen three-sheets. The twoday sale will take place Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 21 and 22. “This auction holds numerous finds suitable for the advanced collector,” said Grey Smith, director of Vintage Posters at Heritage. “I was floored when I saw the only
T
known Style D one-sheet poster for 1932’s “Tarzan the Ape Man,” as well as an impressive one-sheet of Mickey’s “Mellerdrammer” from 1933.” The auction’s selection of rarities includes an Italian twofoglio, post-war release for “Casablanca,” considered one of the best posters released for the film thanks to the stunning artwork by master poster artist Luigi Martinati (est. $25,000+). Another outstanding example of movie poster art being offered will be a scarce Style C one-sheet for “Red Headed Woman” (MGM, 1932), featuring an astoundingly vivid stone litho portrait of the legendary Jean Harlow (est. $30,000+). A haunting window card for Universal’s 1931 classic “Frankenstein” (a miniature version of the Style C three-sheet that
Heritage presented for the first time in the March 2015 Signature Auction) is one of just a handful known to exist (est. $30,000+). A one-sheet for “Things to Come” (United Artists, 1936), an early science fiction epic and considered a crown jewel in the movie poster collecting hobby, represents a rare opportunity for the discriminating collector (est. $25,000+). Another rare find is the 1932 one-sheet for First National’s horror classic “Doctor X,” which stars Fay Wray in this early two-strip Technicolor film (est. $18,000+). The auction also presents the James Bond collection of Gary Firuta, an extensive grouping relating to moviedom’s most famous franchise. It includes such diverse items as vintage toys, model cars, and other rare items. Rarely seen posters will include a Style B British quad for “Goldfinger,” an
advance quad for “Thunderball,” quads for “Dr. No” and “From Russia with Love,” “You Only Live Twice” subway posters, and much more. The Gary Firuta collection will also be offered in Heritage Auctions’ Weekly Internet Movie Poster Auctions through 2016. Additional highlights will include “King Kong” (RKO, 1933), a Swedish oversized poster (25-by-47-inches), est. $15,000+. A half-sheet (22by-28-inches) poster for “Scarface” (United Artist, 1932) will be estimated at $15,000+. Also, “Mickey Mouse - Alpine Climbers” (United Artists, 1936) poster (40-by-60-inches), will be estimated at $15,000+. For additional information, visit www.HA.com.

Noel Barrett Taps Into Prime Collections For Fall Sale Variety Ranges From Earliest Marklin And Ives Trains To Vindex And TootsieToys include the definitive TootsieToy and Ives train collections of Charles Bloom, the marvelous Schoenhut Circus and comic character collection of Fran Oakland, and coveted Vindex cast-iron toys from one of America’s best-known collecting couples, Stevie Weart and her late husband, Bill Weart. The highlights continue with trains, railroad accessories, dolls and dollhouse miniatures from the estate of William and Dolores Fleming, which will join many superb miniatures from the late Flora Gill Jacobs, founder of the acclaimed Washington Dolls’ House and Toy Museum. “Collectors tell us that our auctions are unlike anyone else’s and that any knowledgeable collector of antique toys could look at the items in our catalogs and know immediately whose sale it was. We take that as a very high compliment,” said Noel Barrett, founder and owner of Noel Barrett Antiques & Auctions Ltd. The opening session of Barrett’s fall event will be brimming with Old World artistry. Its 320 lots include exquisite dollhouses and all of the choice miniatures a collector would need to decorate and accessorize a scalemodel residence. The selection includes the last of what had been carefully stored in Flora Gill Jacobs’ attics, closets and basements. Of particular note from the Jacobs collection is Lot 225, The Jumeau doll, French, with an endearing late Victorian or bisque socket head, 14 inches early Edwardian Christmas tall, will be estimated at $3,000- room box. Grotesque Parade Wagon, scarcest of their Humpty Dumpty Circus show wagons, estimated at $12,000-$15,000, and Lot 334, a lavishly gilded horse-drawn Band Wagon with driver and six red-jacketed musicians, estimated at $8,000-$12,000. The circusthemed Schoenhuts are followed by a large menagerie of the manufacturer’s animals, dairy wagons and comic-character figures, such as Felix the Cat, Barney Google and Spark Plug. A broad spectrum of European and American trains and trolleys will be presented, boasting top-shelf brands like Marklin, Bing, Lionel and American Flyer. The Charles Bloom collection of Ives trains is a comprehensive representation of the Connecticut toymaker’s railroad range, starting with very early handpainted tin cars that were inspired by Marklin productions of the same era. “Charles Bloom’s Ives collection is one of the more exotic collections of its type that I’ve ever seen,” said Barrett. “Traditionally, anything by the German manufacturer Marklin goes crazy at auction, but the Bloom collection contains an Ives grouping that is every bit as desirable as what Marklin produced. We expect a lot of interest in these Ives trains because they form a virtual timeline of the company’s production. There are many great rarities that collectors will find This Mason & Converse station and train set, hard to resist.” American, lithographed paper-on-wood, ex. A Christian Hacker dollhouse, a New Hampshire folk art house with white picket fence, a well-appointed Moritz Gottschalk kitchen room box and a luxe assortment of dollhouse miniatures, china wares and dollhouse dolls from the collection of the late William and Dolores Fleming are also among Friday’s highlights. The Fleming collection is well represented in the Friday session but reappears on Saturday with an extensive array of trains and accessories, both European and American. Lot 321 opens the session on day two and is the first of dozens of lots devoted to the Fran O a k l a n d Schoenhut collection. Lot 788, a circa 1901-02 painted-tin passenger train set with illustrated original box, track, key and instruction booklet for “The Miniature Railway System.” The estimate will be $3,000$4,000. Also, Lot 626, a Mason & Converse lithographed-paper train and station set, ex. Ward Kimball collection, could reach $4,000-$6,000. Charles Bloom’s eye for quality followed through to his extraordinary TootsieToy diecast collection. Primarily of 1930s production, many of the toys are offered in their vibrantly hued original boxes with recesses for each piece. Lot 576, a boxed, outer-spacethemed Buck Rogers 25th Century Rocket Ships set, is expected to reach $3,000$4,000, while Lot 577 consists of three each of boxed, store-stock examples of TootsieToy’s Buck Rogers Battle Cruiser, Destroyer, Attack Ship and USN Los Angeles ZEP (zeppelin). One of the scarcest of the manufacturer’s boxed sets, TootsieToy Funnies, features the most popular of early comic-strip characters, including the Katzenjammers, Andy Gump, Moon Mullins and Kayo. The set is cataloged as Lot 581 with a $3,000$4,000 estimate. Barrett describes Lot 455 and 456 as “two of the best theaters I’ve ever seen.” Both are of German manufacture and detailed to a very high standard; the latter of the two has a revolving stage. Each carries a high estimate of $1,500. The theaters are closely followed by five rare and highly sought-after Baranger motion displays dating from the early 1940s to early ’50s. SHOPS & CENTERS COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: Thinking Of Christmas Early...
1) Toy trains. I think this is a universal that transcends all ages, gender, and interests. Every kid needs to come down and see a Christmas tree with a train running around. The thing is that older vintage O and HO train sets are available on the marketplace for very little money. The new Snap Track
iconic movie has never gone out of style, and I had no qualms about spending some serious money to acquire the rare first poster made for the movie. This image will be great in her room and first apartment after college and will probably not go down in price. 4) History. I am a firm believer that every collector is a historian at heart. We love the past, which is why we collect it. And as we build our expertise, we become historians of our subjects. So it goes without saying that collecting history should be easy for us.
What do I mean by collecting history? Six months ago, we were in an antiques mall, and there was a group of commercial prints produced by one of the leading WWII aircraft manufacturers. It showed, in a very artistic way, American B25 bombers flying over Japan at the time of the Doolittle raid. My daughter loves history and art and so this print had to come home with us. As you look to build a collection for a young person, consider a few things. First, select an item that can easily be found and is priced
appropriately. No one likes to go fishing with the wrong bait and catch nothing. Similarly, no one wants to collect something that is rarely seen and incredibly expensive if ever found. Second, select items that can be played with and enjoyed. Third, kids’ interests change. Jane’s interest in trains has waned in her late teens, but that does not mean they have been sold. Quite the contrary, they rest until she will come back to them because the collecting bug can become dormant but never really leaves!

Every year around the holidays, my daughters, like most kids, start making their Santa lists. It is such a kid thing (although practiced by adults for sure), and so it gets me to thinking about how as collectors we might use the holidays to inspire new generations of collectors. I am a firm believer that antiques should be purchased, owned, and enjoyed by the entire family. Holidays are a great chance to have antiques fever bite a new generation. So here are a few thoughts on holiday gifts that could inspire interest in kids.
but the artistic endeavor of the publisher. 3) Rock and Roll Memorabilia. This is a bit of a minefield for many collectors since the market is so speculative. Posters, albums, and more can be priced all over the map, and I really do not believe that much of this material warrants the amounts being charged. That being said, I think there are pockets of classic rock memorabilia that will grow in value. For example, my daughter loves “The Rocky Horror Picture Show. This

is easy to put together and does not require nails or screws. Thus, with a little work, you can create a magical world for a child at Christmas. That set can then be out year-round or it could be kept special for Christmas. 2) Illustrated books. For the more mature child, older illustrated books are wonderful gifts. I am talking about the full gamut of things from 19th century illustrated books to 20th century pop up books. They are inexpensive, will grow in value, and really speak not only to the content

’Tis The Season To Preserve: Collecting Antique Canning Jars Canning jars are one of those technological advances that have become so ubiquitous we’ve forgotten just how revolutionary the development of food preservation really was! The next time you remove a quart of applesauce from the boiling water bath, take a moment to appreciate the marvel you hold (but be careful) because the process that makes it possible for you to enjoy tasty homemade applesauce (or strawberry preserves, or pear butter) also made possible modern Europe. Food supplies were, of course, of the greatest importance to sustaining large armies on the move, so important in fact that the French government offered a 12,000 franc prize in 1795 (about $17,000 in today’s Euros) for a food
preservation method to serve the military’s needs. The winner, Chef Nicholas Appert, offered a way to heat food in glass jars and seal them with pitch (yum?), among other things. He published his process in his 1810 L’Art de conserver, pendant plusieurs années, toutes les substances animales et végétales (The Art of Preserving All Kinds of Animal and Vegetable Substances for Several Years), paving the way for all sorts of food preservation developments later in the 19th century. The biggest challenge in early methods of canning is that sealing (or unsealing) the jar often destroyed the jar’s rim, so when tinsmith John Mason figured out how to cut threads into a tin lid and paired the lid with a jar with a threaded glass top, home canning became dramatically more practical and affordable. It’s
common to see Mason jars with a patent date of 1858, but these jars are not early; early Mason jars had no marks, and this design appeared in the 1880s. In reality, sales were
slow until this point, largely because clearer forms of glass were still expensive, and dark glass had the unappealing trait of obscuring the color and quality of the canned materials. Still, Mason’s development has almost become a generic substitute for the canning jar, and lightning jars (the ones with the

Throughout the year, OTSA presents both online-only auctions containing excellent goods for every budget and twice-yearly platinum-level auctions that feature exceptionally high-quality sets from pedigreed collections. It’s once again time to reach for that top shelf, as OTSA presents a 1,500-lot Fine Toy Soldiers Auction on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Nov. 20, 21, and 22. Bidders may participate in this major fall event by phone, absentee or live online through LiveAuctioneers. “In this sale, there’s a highly diverse selection of mostly older - but some newer - toy soldiers,” said OTSA owner Ray Haradin. “When you look through the catalog, there’s no mistaking the high standard that was set for consignments. The rarity and quality is consistent from

Aside from its extreme rarity, it’s pristine in a pristine box,” said Haradin. The estimate will be $7,000-$9,000. Another nice, early Britains production is the mechanical Galloping Donkey Cart. The donkey’s legs and the cart it pulls are made of lead, while other parts of the toy are of painted composition. It is entered in the auction with a $1,500$1,800 estimate. Intense competition is expected for the only known boxed example of Britains’ circa-1906 Set #10 - Salvation A Britains circa-1890 FourArmy. One of the stars of the sale is a circa-1890 fourhorse version of Britains’ Horse Race in its original box. In their May 29 auction, OTSA sold a two-horse version of the ingenious antique toy for $7,800. “This fourhorse version, which is from the same consignor, is equally rare but is more intricately designed, with an unusual set of flywheels to simulate realistic motion. I know of only one other boxed example of this particular toy, so there can be no question that this will be a jewel for some lucky person’s collection.
set of its type that I have ever seen,” said Haradin. It will be estimated at $3,000-$5,000. One of the most soughtafter of all Britains vehicles, a Royal Mail Van Set #1552, is a quintessential depiction of the most familiar sight on British roads during the 1930s. In excellent condition with rich, unfaded colors, the van carries a $4,000-$6,000 estimate. Other brands represented in the antique soldier section include the revered German manufacturer Heyde and two of the earliest American toy soldier makers: Eureka and William Felix. The latter two companies were in business as early as 1905. Both companies’ productions are coveted by connoisseurs of not only antique toy soldiers but also early American toys in general. A large selection of Britains Racing Colors, jockeys on horses with “silks” painted in the colors of various stables, will be offered with estimates ranging from $150-$450. Additionally, there are many desirable Courtney and Courtney Greenhill knights, estimated from $100 to $2,000, depending on rarity, and a great variety of civilian and military figures from a
myriad of other manufacturers. “Virtually every maker of old toy soldiers can be found in this sale,” said Haradin. “There’s a nice sampling of Mignot, Johillco, Cherilea and Crescent. There’s even a smattering of dime store soldiers, which have their own avid following. And in addition to the standard Britains sets, we also have several very attractive Britains display sets. They’re always in demand.” A section of the three-day auction will be devoted to newer soldiers and figures from the most respected of contemporary brands. An extensive array of Trophy soldiers includes their Boxer Rebellion set, $800-$1,200, and from King and Country comes an impressive selection
of retired sets dating to the company’s early period of production - the 1980s and early 1990s. Bid in OTSA’s 2015 Major Fall Auction of Fine Toy Soldiers via absentee, phone or live online through LiveAuctioneers. The dates and starting times are 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 20, and 10 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 21 and 22. The firm had commissioned E.B. Segner to do the artworks, which later were given to her. Why not stop by the Grist Mill Antiques Center to get a jump on holiday shopping? This month, the store is putting the spotlight on “A Gallery of Vintage Christmas Gifts.” The Grist Mill invites shoppers to come by to find distinct and uncommon gifts for all those hard-to-shop for people. A nice set of cufflinks, some barware or a classic silver flask should do the trick for the guys. A gilded evening bag, a piece of sparkling antique jewelry or an art glass perfume atomizer would make a perfect present under the tree for the ladies to unwrap, and a classic train set or Madame Alexander doll is definitely something children will treasure. Why not give a child’s teacher a collectible Little Golden Book or a 1950s lunchbox filled with holiday treats? Don’t forget all the entertaining to be done over the next few months. Brighten up
