Gateway’s auction on Oct. 24 included a collection of wood carvings, many of which were done by Fred Boss. Boss of Chambersburg, Pa., died in 2013 at the age of 81. He was an art teacher for 31 years at the former Scotland School for Veterans’ Children in Scotland, Pa., and was a member of both the Cumberland Valley Crafts Guild and the Pennsylvania Guild of The Cerulean Warbler by Craftsmen. through the early 20th century. Kazar was a Navy Commander and member of the elite Navy Seals. He had an eye for top-quality items and was a regular at high-profile auctions in the metropolitan New York area. He was also a member of Bodnar’s staff for many years, acquiring his taste for antiques and respect for history from his parents, who owned an antiques store in New Brunswick, N.J. Kazar had a penchant for historically-significant artifacts made in or having to do with New Jersey – bank notes from 19th-century New Brunswick banks; Historical Staffordshire bowls and pitchers depicting Passaic Falls and the Passaic River; stoneware jugs from Johnson & Johnson, headquartered in New Brunswick; Sterling silver drinking cups and other silver items crafted by New Jersey silversmiths; a collection of 27 Civil War-era presentation swords, each one documented, with provenance and photos of the officers who owned the weapons, all of them from New Jersey; photographs and signed documents belonging to veterans of the Civil War, and more. Kazar was also a meticulous record keeper, and all items are well-documented. His modest New Jersey residence, close to the auction site, was crammed and in places stacked to the ceilings. “It was a suburban time capsule,” said Bodnar. The auction will open with 46 lots of vintage maps collected by a Somerville attorney, some pre-dating the American Revolution. The balance of the sale will be from Kazar’s estate. One of the highlights in the sale is a lot that This lot includes the personal belongings of Demarest Gordon, includes the personal a Civil War drummer from New Jersey. It includes his drum, belongings of Demarest drumsticks, partial uniform, discharge papers and a charcoal Gordon, a Civil War drawing of Demarest in his uniform. Continued on page 2

There is a glass photograph of Roden, his brother George, and their families in front of the 7th N.J. monument at Gettysburg in 1913, and a 7th N.J. Volunteer reunion ribbon. The lot is estimated at $3,000-$6,000. A museum-quality sale of New Jersey Americana accumulated over a lifetime by a former Navy Seal will be sold at no reserve during Bodnar Auction’s Saturday, Dec. 3, sale at the New Jersey Convention and Exposition Center located in Edison. More than 600 lots will be in the catalog sale, including mint condition bank notes, engraved Civil War presentation swords, regimental Civil War flags carried in battle, backpacks, trunks, late 19th-century reunion ribbons, medals, discharge papers, documents signed by Abraham Lincoln and Thomas Edison, a place setting of President Woodrow Wilson’s White House china, signed Colonial-era silver with silversmith’s markings, coins, pocket watches, and transferware – teapots, soup tureens, water pitchers, wash pitchers and other pieces featuring iconic New Jersey sites and scenes. A California collector called auctioneer Joe Bodnar after seeing advertising for this auction and offered to buy the entire collection for over six figures, an offer that could not be entertained because of legalities and Bodnar’s commitment to the William Kazar estate. drummer from New Jersey. It includes his drum, drumsticks, partial uniform, discharge papers and a charcoal drawing of Demarest in his uniform. Gordon was mustered in on Sept. 3, 1862, and was mustered out on June 27, 1863. The snare drum is wood stenciled “D Gordon” above the “J W Pepper & Sons” label. It has replaced ropes, yet the tighteners are in good condition. The coatee is blue with black piping and has large CW eagle buttons. His name is written in the inside pocket. It is in good condition, with piping coming loose around the collar and in one spot and a few small tears to the lining. There are no moth holes to the jacket. The charcoal picture shows Gordon holding the drum and wearing the coatee. The record of service is an Eagle Monument Association lithograph and has a split near the middle. The group will be estimated at $1,500-$3,000. Another interesting lot is a letter from Abraham Lincoln estimated at $3,000-$6,000. The note written by Abraham Lincoln was on behalf of Hugh Roden, a drummer in the 7th N.J., to his superiors. Written in the top is “Executive Mansion” and dated Oct. 11, 1861. It states,
An Emerson and Silver non-regulation officers sword identified to Captain William Nippins of the 4th N.J. Militia and 34th N.J. will be sold.

The regimental flag belonged to the 1st NJ Veterans Regiment, NJM. It is hand painted with the N.J. state seal in the center and a red ribbon underneath with “1st Veterans Regiment, NJM” and in a deep blue color with fringed border. Some of the paint has worn from age. One of 27 swords that will be offered is an Emerson and Silver non-regulation officers sword identified to Captain William Nippins of the 4th N.J. Three historic scenes by America’s first history painter, John Trumbull, are central to a new installation at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art that explores the visual interpretation of the Revolutionary War (1775-83). “John Trumbull: Visualizing American Independence” features more than 30 objects taken from the museum’s permanent collection, including an additional work by Trumbull, as well as works by modern artists who revisited the legacy of the war in the 20th century in observance of major anniversaries such as the bicentennial of George Washington’s birth in 1932 and the nation’s bicentennial in 1976. The installation is on view through July 2017. John Trumbull (1756-1843) served in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War and later created a series of eight paintings devoted to the subject, explaining once to Thomas Jefferson that he hoped the paintings would “diffuse the knowledge and preserve the memory of the noblest series of actions which have ever dignified the history of man.” After completing a second edition to adorn the rotunda of the United States Capitol in Washington, D.C., Trumbull began a third and final series in 1831. Due to his failing health, Trumbull was only able to complete five of the paintings, all of which were purchased by the trustees of the Wadsworth Atheneum. Trumbull’s Revolutionary War scenes were some of the museum’s inaugural objects and were displayed when the first gallery opened in 1844. Three of those paintings, “The Death of General Montgomery in the Attack on Quebec, December 31, 1775,” “The Declaration of Independence, July 4, 1776” and “The Capture of the Hessians at Trenton,

December 26, 1776,” are included in “Visualizing American Independence.” “The Death of General Warren at the Battle of Bunker’s Hill, June 17, 1775” is on view in the museum’s Morgan Great Hall, and “The Death of General Mercer at the Battle of Princeton, January 3, 1777” is scheduled for loan to a peer institution. Trumbull’s role as artisthistorian encouraged later generations of artists to visually reinterpret the American Revolution and secure the legacy of its heroes. “Trumbull set the stage for later generations of artists to reinterpret the Revolutionary War and enhance the iconography of American independence,” said Erin Monroe, the Robert H. Schutz, Jr., associate curator of American paintings and sculpture. One of the most frequently portrayed subjects from this period is George Washington, whose image, especially after his death, became so symbolic that memorial portraits elevated him to a divine figure. Many portraits were made into engravings and mass-produced, providing artists with easy accessibility to Washington’s likeness for transfer onto textiles, decorative arts, jewelry, postage stamps, currency and other objects. “John Trumbull: Visualizing American Independence” features a range of such renditions, including several 19thcentury ceramic jugs decorated with Washington’s image and a 1975 color lithograph by Alex Katz, titled “Young Washington,” from the Kent Bicentennial Portfolio, “Spirit of Independence.” About the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art Founded in 1842, the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art is the oldest continuously operating public art museum in the United States. The museum’s nearly 50,000 works of art span 5,000 years, from Greek and Roman antiquities to the first museum collection of American contemporary art. The Wadsworth Atheneum’s five connected buildings - representing architectural styles from Gothic Revival to modern International Style - are located at 600 Main St., Hartford, Conn. Collector Anecdotes And Antics A Look At Some Obscure Toy Lines Of The 1980s struggled to maintain the popularity of the genre. It was definitely much more violent than most toy lines of the day and even had a short-lived animated series to coincide with the toy’s release. The series, along with the toy line, died a quick death at the hands of kids who saw it as generic and parents who loathed the amount of kid-friendly violence it portrayed. Today, a factory sealed COPS action figure in mint condition can be found for about $20 to $40. 7. Barnyard Commandos Playmates scored a very lucrative licensing gig with their ability to create toys and action figures based on “Star Trek” and “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” during the late 1980s and the 1990s. Unfortunately, their decision

to release an original toy line based on barnyard animals armed with heavy artillery was hated by critics and ignored by enthusiasts. Today, the action figures bring a whole $25 to $30 when sold in near mint and factory sealed condition. Just don’t expect the toy line to make another appearance any time soon. 8. Sectaurs Manufactured by Coleco and, ironically, not a bad toy line at all. Sectaurs are more of a victim of poor timing and bad marketing than an overall design flaw. By the time of their release, Coleco was going through a lot of changes due to financial issues, and Sectaurs never got the full marketing it deserved. Today, the line is sought after in factory sealed condition, but not

I think the 1980s will always be remembered as one of the most popular decades of the 20th century. Pop culture enthusiasts have a lot of things to be thankful for that were made possible by the decade of decadence. Nintendo, anyone? Toy collectors have solidified the 1980s as the decade that gave rise to some of the most obscure toy lines in the history of the genre. Here is a look at several toy lines that lack the popularity and value of G.I. Joe and the Transformers but are quite affordable if you can find them. 1. Battle Beasts Originating in Japan and released in the United States by Hasbro, these plastic figurines stand less than two inches tall and were released as a distant spinoff to the popular Transformers toy line. In the U.S., the toy line only lasted for two series, but in Japan the line was much more popular. They were sold in packs of two and can usually be found factory sealed and in near mint condition for about $100 for each set of two. Hint to collectors: These reek of being undervalued in a market that prices factory sealed Transformers at close to four figures! 2. Starcom Coleco thought they may have a bonafide hit on their hands with these sturdy toys
from $30 to $50. Most still sell for $20 or less and have become a lesson as to why speculation never works. Ironically, they were also quite popular in their day. Collector tip: Don’t buy these for investment. It will take a few more decades for distributors and oddball collectors (pun intended) to sell out of their over-hoarded stock. 5. Visionaries Holograms were all the rage in the early to mid 1980s. Ironically, all that most holograms were at the time was highly polished stickers with different viewing images depending on what angle the image was viewed. Visionaries were released by Hasbro and were action figures with a medieval tech punk vibe that competed with Tomy’s Supernaturals. Both toy lines are obscure, with Supernaturals being more popular and, as such, more valuable. Still, find a near mint factory sealed Visionaries action figure still on its near mint card, and you have an item worth $100 or more if graded. Hint for would-be collectors: If you are buying for investment, go after Tomy’s Supernaturals line instead. That toy line is much more popular and has seen steady price increases since being featured on the cult classic reality television show “Toy Hunter.” You’ll thank me in the years to come. 6. COPS Robocop scored box office gold due to its ability to captivate adult audiences with an obscene amount of ultra violence that was so over the top it was almost laughable. COPS was an original creation that

whose mini action figures contained magnetic feet. With a generic outerspace theme and Coleco hitting financial woes, the series died a quick death, and the toy line isn’t all that valuable. Still, if you have any of the toys in factory sealed and near mint condition, they are worth getting third party graded through AFA (Action Figure Authority). Most sell for $100 to $200 each if new and third party graded in near mint condition or better and serve as a great conversation piece. 3. GUTS! Mattel attempted to bring back the non-poseable plastic army man in the 1980s. The line was called GUTS! and featured various toy soldier-like plastic figurines based on generic fighting themes such as the Green Berets or the esoteric Ninjas. The line flopped as expected, but did give rise to a few hilarious classic television commercials that reek of nostalgia and can easily be found on YouTube. Meanwhile a factory sealed set in near mint condition may net you $20 to $50, with myself and a few other odd ball collectors willing to buy them. Just don’t expect it to go any higher in value, as these have virtually no investment potential. 4. Madballs Thought to become highly sought after by yesterday’s speculators, Madballs are a lesson in sheer stupidity. So many of the soft foam balls with a monstrous disgusting face were produced that they could be found in distributor warehouses well into the early 2000s. Today, a factory sealed Madball in near mint condition will set you back anywhere
as valuable as you would think. Sectaurs are a hybrid of insects and humans combined to make a deluxe action figure. Some figures when graded and new in near mint condition can sell for a few hundred dollars each, but the real value is in the deluxe play set known as “The Hive.” If unopened in its original box, this play set can command between $500 to $1,000 on the secondary market depending on condition and is well worth buying if you can find one. Ironically, I could have doubled or even tripled this list and still not covered all the esoteric and highly original obscure toy lines from the 1980s. I just wanted to shed some light on some of the toy lines that hardcore collectors and novice collectors alike could obtain from the 1980s without breaking the bank and show would-be speculators that not everything from decades past is worth a mint. Oh, and Christmas is right around the corner.

Fooled By Fakes Figural Napkin Rings Silver napkin rings add a touch of elegance to a table, but originally they were used for health purposes. Back in the 1800s, Sterling silver and silver plate napkin rings were typically engraved with the first name of each person in a household, and their napkin was re-rolled and stored between meals in their own personal ring. This was because laundry was done far less frequently, and since napkins were made of reusable fabric, their user needed to be identified so napkins weren’t shared between washings.
The first reference to napkin rings was in London’s 1839 Oxford Dictionary, but those early napkin rings were knitted and reinforced with wire to keep their shape. The first American patent for napkin rings was in 1869, and those rings were made of either Sterling silver or silver plate. Figural napkin rings added a touch of whimsy and became quite popular, as well as reflected personal interests, hobbies, pets, careers, etc. Catalogues showed simple rings, figurals, and openwork rings featured elements from nature like leaves and flowers. Napkin rings began diminishing in popularity around the 1910s and have become quite collectible today, with some rare antique pieces fetching over $1,500. There are some
contemporary silversmiths making reproductions of these figural pieces, like James Mackie, whose “JM” touch mark appears on his pieces, but you’ll have to look very closely because the marks are extremely small. His pieces are not meant to deceive, but his work is very good on most reproductions, and you really need to look for his mark. However, if you find a small (slightly larger than a pencil tip) spot that’s been scraped or scratched off, a reseller may have removed Mackie’s mark in order to make the piece look like a period antique. Some of Mackie’s pieces do have slight differences from originals; others have major differences. One example of major differences is his reindeer pulling a napkin ring sleigh: there are differences on the deer’s details, and although both sets of runners are quite fancy, they’re different on each version. While this offers buyers a starting point, there’s the often-present “however” - some Victorian manufacturers made similar figural napkin rings with variations that may make them seem like reproductions because they differ from each other. This is why using only one type of authentication isn’t enough. Plenty of other silversmiths and silver companies have created both reproductions and fantasy Victorian napkin rings too, including International Silver, Reed & Barton and Meriden Britannia. Many of these have permanent contemporary maker’s marks, but others don’t. International Silver, for one, has produced some reproduction napkin rings that are styled after Kate Greenaway pieces but don’t have a permanent mark; rather, they had a sticker that can be easily

A Nod To The Wise: Salt-And-Pepper Nodders Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century function). The first nodders, widely available in the 1920s and ’30s, were primarily produced for export, by Japan and Germany. With the onset of WWII, those export gates clanged shut. For the duration, salt-and-peppers, and other giftware items, were domestically produced. Following the war, imports resumed (pieces stamped “Occupied Japan” are especially desirable), and nodders retained their
By Donald-Brian Johnson Salt-and-pepper “nodders.” They’re the original “yes-men.” Just set a nodder in action, and whatever the question, the answer is always in the affirmative. With such ongoing positive reinforcement, it’s no wonder nodders have remained popular with collectors. Nodders fascinate because, unlike most other salt-and-peppers, they “do” something (in addition, of course, to their designated
first-market popularity throughout the 1950s. The great majority of saltand-pepper nodders are porcelain, allowing for the most flexibility in shape and decoration. Porcelain also keeps the seasoning inside at its most fresh and flavorful. Sizing is fairly consistent; a nodder set measures roughly 3.5 inches high and 4 inches wide. Nodder bases are often interchangeable, differing only in their handpainted flourishes (roses are most common) or their applied decals celebrating a location or event. Some bases, in collector terms, have been “jollied up,” with other decorative materials glued to the porcelain. A Florida souvenir nodder set, for example, is often enhanced with the application of tiny shells. Generally, the nodder’s removable porcelain shakers are mounted on a porcelain base by means of side “wings,” which hold them in place on the lip of each opening; a mere touch sets them in Which one’s right? figural portion of each removable shaker. The shakers don’t hold much seasoning, but with whimsies such as these, practicality is never a major concern. A variation includes a central “mustard pot,” allowing for another useful condiment. And here’s an interesting note: filled shakers seem to nod with more consistency than empty ones. While the bases may be similar, on the removable shakers themselves, imagination runs riot. Animal lovers can populate their kitchens with an entire nodder menagerie. While fish, deer, and chickens are the most popular motifs, the design range includes almost every denizen of field and stream. There are winsome bear,

bashful donkey, and playful kitten nodders. Pheasant, bluebird, and turkey nodders too, plus graceful flamingos and hot-to-trot racehorses. There’s even that oddity, the “yes and no” nodder: on a kangaroo pair, the mother’s head nods one way, the joey’s another. Locale souvenirs were a popular nodder topic. Matador and bull nodders, on a base emblazoned with a “Souvenir of Mexico” decal, brought back memories of a trip south of the border; tailswishing alligator nodders They’re off! are figural novelties. No collection can really be considered complete without a pair of “Chattering Teeth” skulls. On one skeletal souvenir stamped “Thousand Islands, N.Y.,” the bottom set of choppers is molded into the base. The top set is part of the removable skull. When in place and in motion, the effect is not so much “nodding” as “eerie chomping.” Another favorite: a somewhat-worse-for-wear couple popping out of the side of a beer barrel. Plan For Your Stuff By Andrew Richmond As you think about the dispersal of your collection, what’s your top priority? Last time we talked about money as the priority squeezing as much out of your collection as possible. That’s the most popular priority; however, another - control - is shared by many collectors. It’s your collection, right? You are the expert. So it’s not surprising that many of you want to have a real say and be actively involved in how your collection is brought to market. Several years ago, when I was still an auctioneer, I oversaw the sale of the lifetime collection of dear friends. They had a very specific vision of how their collection was to be sold. They wanted a printed catalog, and they wanted to be sure that their decades of research were integrated into the catalog entries. To accomplish this, I spent a
week living with them and cataloguing their collection with their continued input and then another week with the photographer in their house making that printed catalog look exceptional. When the catalog came back from the printer, everyone was happy, especially the sellers. Ultimately, their collection sold well, though they readily admitted for far less than they paid. However, for them, the catalog was what was important, so they were happy customers. If having some control over how your collection sells is your priority, then finding the auction house or houses that fit is your key to success. Hopefully you have a realistic sense of what your collection is worth. If so, what’s the average lot value? You’ll want to find an auction house whose average lot value is about the same. In fact, you might even look for a house whose average lot is slightly lower than your own. Why? If you are
