Part One Of Devenish Collection Tops Million-Dollar Mark Bertoia’s Sale Featured 175 Antique Banks n the week leading up to Bertoia Auctions’ Oct. 3 sale of the Clive Devenish antique bank collection, Part I, all eyes were on a potential troublemaker: Hurricane Joaquin. As it barreled toward the East Coast, possibly to collide with another coastal storm, there were decisions to be made. Would the sale go on as planned? Yes. Bertoia Auctions’ owner, Jeanne Bertoia, had been keeping close tabs on Joaquin’s path, and once it became evident that the hurricane was turning out to sea, she and her team assured all callers that the much-anticipated event would be going forward as planned. Although heavy rain continued to pummel New Jersey on auction day, resulting in a lighterthan-usual crowd, it did not stop collectors from pursuing their choice of prized banks from the

collection, the near-mint bank commanded a remarkable $72,000. Several mechanical banks were accompanied by their rare original boxes, including J. & E. Stevens’ circa-1906 classic known as Boy Robbing Bird’s Nest. In virtually unplayed-with condition and with a trail of ownership that could be traced back to the legendary Walter P. Chrysler collection, it closed at $42,000. A l s o retaining its original factory box was a Shepard Hardware Co. Mason bank patented in 1887. A popular bank with collectors, it depicts two tradesmen working on a brick wall, a mason who holds a trowel and brick, and a hod carrier. Ex. Leading the top 10 was a circa-1880 Kyser & Rex Roller Skating mechanical bank with five skating figures and a complex action. Considered one of the finest of few known examples, it came to Devenish with prestigious provenance from the F.H. Griffith and Steven Steckbeck collections. The beautiful near-mint example of fine artistry in cast iron was sold for $120,000. Another coveted entry, a nearmint circa-1886 J. & E. Stevens Bread Winners mechanical bank, represented the common laborer’s discontent with monopolies and political bribery. Previously part of the Ferdinand Weider

described in Bertoia’s catalog as being the only all-original, unrepaired example known to have reached the auction marketplace in the last 20 years. Like the Boy Robbing Bird’s Nest, the Milking Cow appeared to be in unplayed-with condition. Bidders expressed their approval of the bank’s vibrant factory paint and natural patina by pushing it well beyond its high estimate to $39,000. Also designed by Charles A. Bailey, a lead and wood Springing A J. & E. Stevens Battleship “Oregon” still bank sold for $6,600.

Cat mechanical bank, patented in 1882, featured an action that involved the release of a small mouse and the cat’s unsuccessful pursuit of the quickly retreating rodent. Formerly in the F.H. Griffith collection, the Springing Cat realized an above-estimate $33,000. The Kyser & Rex Roller Skating mechanical bank realized $120,000.

Yet another mechanical bank that appeared to have spent much of its life on a high shelf, away from sunlight and curious children, was a five-hole version of the Hold the Fort Bank. Patented in 1877 but of unknown manufacture, the brightly colored artillery-action bank with components that included a cannon, target and American Flag settled at $36,000. Other noteworthy mechanical banks included the following: John

still bank lineup was a circa 1915 Hubley Mascot, which depicts a young baseball player standing atop an American League baseball. Scarce and desirable, the bank had been purchased by Devenish at a 1984 estate sale in San Francisco. It sold at Bertoia’s for $7,200. Another testament to the strength of still banks was the J. & E. Stevens Battleship Oregon, made around 1902. Intricately cast and fastidiously detailed with boats, masts and painted-on ocean waves, the cast-iron craft set sail at $6,600. Most of the spelter banks offered in the sale achieved prices within or above their respective estimate ranges. A circa 1900 to 1910 Rabbit Head bank made by the renowned German toy soldier manufacturer Heyde exceeded expectations at $1,320, as did a circa 1910 to 1920 Terrier on Basket, which earned $1,200. Of a similar age, a Standing Bear with Top Hat took a bow at $840, while an appealing example of Rabbits at Orange Ball, with original clasp, retired at $720. Those who were able to attend the 2.5 hour auction in person were well rewarded by the atmosphere of camaraderie and the Bertoia family’s open-door brand of friendship. “We enjoy hosting events here at the gallery and do everything we can to encourage live attendance, not only for the hands-on viewing, but also for the important experience of mingling with likeminded collectors

who share their passion,” said Jeanne Bertoia. “We make every effort to provide an environment that makes people feel welcome. At every auction our guests tell us how much they appreciate our hospitality, including our now-signature ‘foodie’ sessions with catered food and beverages,” said Bertoia. The “short-and-sweet” sale This Hubley baseball-theme Mascot still bank brought $7,200.

of the Devenish banks spurred a very focused style of bidding that larger sales do not exhibit. “It seemed that bidding decisions were made far in advance of the auction. Collectors appeared to know exactly what they wanted. The buzz in the air was that the banks were in great condition, but were they going to be affordable? And as with any auction, the answer The Shepard Hardware Co. Trick Pony mechanical bank sold for $7,800.

When activated, there are many movements. The magician’s head and necktie move and his eyebrows wiggle. After waving his wand, he lifts a blanket to reveal a small bird. The blanket is placed over the bird again and, with a second wave of the magic wand, the blanket is raised and the bird is gone. The estimate is $1,000-$2,000. There will be an abundance of French dolls from which to choose. Highlights will be a bisque-head poupee with kid body impressed “F.G.” on one shoulder, $200-$300, and an impressive list of Armand Marseille dolls, including Nos. 370, 351, 323 (googly-eyed with bisque head), 3200 Marotte, 341, 351 (black with bisque head) and multiple examples of a No. 390. Several SFBJ bisque-head dolls will appear in the sale, including a No. 60 walker estimated at $300-$600; a “Eunice” in its display box, $300-$500; and an unnumbered production, $100-$200. Interest is expected for a German Simon & Halbig 1079 doll and others that were made collaboratively by Heinrich Handwerck (designers) and Simon & Halbig (manufacturers). All are conservatively estimated. An Aich, Menzel & Co. (Austria) bisque-head doll with composition body is expected to make $200-$300. Stephenson’s is well prepared for collectors of the everpopular American-made Vogue Ginny dolls. Lot 151 is a 1952 Ginny with its original trousseau trunk and additional outfits and accessories, including roller skates, shoes, hair curlers in a carry case and more. The estimate is $200$300. That grouping will be followed by 200 “discovery” lots available only to those who are physically present for the sale. Several different collections in the Pennsylvania/New Jersey/Delaware region were the source for the selection of antique, vintage and contemporary dolls. There will be bisque, china-head composition, papier-mache, cloth and hard plastic examples, as well as a few celluloid dolls. The majority are French, German and American made, with a few interesting Japanese dolls as well. The top doll lot is expected to be Lot 171, a Lambert automaton depicting a young lady standing beside a lace and rosette-trimmed mirrored vanity. The bisque-head doll holds a powder puff in her right hand, which moves up and down as though she is applying powder to her face. Her head and other arm also move. According to Stephenson’s owner Cindy Stephenson, the automaton “needs some cleaning and a little TLC, but its inner workings operate perfectly.” It is estimated at $4,000-$6,000. Cordier’s Book and Photography Auction on Sunday, Nov. 29, in Harrisburg, Pa., will feature more than 500 lots, including a John F. Kennedy inaugural hat template and an 1889 silver George Washington centennial inauguration medal, along with books, photographs, sports ephemera, newspapers, and autographs. One remarkable lot is a template that hat fitter John Garside of New York City used to prepare two top hats for President Kennedy’s inauguration. Garside, Chief Fitter for Cavanaugh’s Hat Co., visited then-Presidentelect Kennedy at his suite at the Hotel Carlyle in New York for the fitting. Garside had a photo of each of his two children with him, and Kennedy signed both. The lot includes the two autographed photos as well as related newspaper articles.

SHOPS & CENTERS Collector Anecdotes And Antics What To Expect When Consigning: Part III - Choosing The Auction House Or Auctioneer experience are more likely to have feedback about a particular auction house and some of this feedback is due to the fact that the consignor did not ask appropriate questions before consigning or had unrealistic expectations. This kind of feedback is also at times very one-sided, with an auction house or auctioneer not having the ability to present their side of the situation in full. Take these comments and reviews at face value, but know that there are always two sides to every story. Once you have a list of auctioneers who are willing to offer to consign your items and you are comfortable working with them, it is time to ask about consignment rates. This can get a little complicated, as a lot of auction houses have what is called a buyer’s premium. The buyer’s premium has been the subject of a lot of controversy, with some prominent members in the trade often referring to it as the buyer’s penalty. My opinions on the buyer’s premium

are far beyond the scope of this article, so just know that it is an additional fee charged to the buyer of an item at auction in addition to the hammer price of the item in question. Some buyer’s premiums range from 10 percent all the way to 25 percent. There are some companies that do not charge one. The average buyer’s premium I have encountered at auctions is between 10 percent to 20 percent. Any consignor needs to pay attention to this rate because it is a fee assessed by the auction house that any buyer will take into account

when bidding. Therefore, if an auction house charges a consignment rate of 20 percent and has a 20 percent buyer’s premium, they are making 40 percent off the sale of your goods—20 percent coming from you from the hammer price, and 20 percent coming from the buyer in the form of the buyer’s premium. It is very important to take this into account when attempting to negotiate with an auction house. This brings us to the question of what is a fair consignment rate? Unfortunately, there is not just one correct

answer. Collectors of highly liquid third-party graded items that are either scarce or in high grade can expect to negotiate a favorable consignment rate, especially if they have a collection in the five to six figure range. However, this is the exception more than the rule. It is not uncommon for consignors of these kinds of collections to pay no consignment rate and even get a percentage of the buyer’s premium as well, leaving the auction house to make their money off of what is left on (Continued on page 4)

In my latest series of articles, titled “What to Expect when Consigning,” I discussed the merits of what a full-service auction house can do to assist any collector who is thinking of selling his or her cherished collection. I also discussed how important it is for any seller to take an honest and accurate assessment of their items. The marketplace for most antiques and collectibles is diverse. Ask any dealer to give you an honest assessment about where he or she finds most of their items for resale, and auctions will often be listed as a primary source. Once an honest assessment regarding the items to be sold has been made, it is now time to make a list of viable auction houses that cater to the items in question. Most hardcore collectors already have a general idea of who they want to deal with, but some may not. It is important to focus on auctioneers who cater to the kinds of items you have for sale. Make a list of what you have, and contact several auction houses that have a lot of experience dealing with what you have to offer. Any auction house that wants your business should spend ample time answering all your questions, providing references, and giving you an honest auction appraisal. Review past auction

sales to see what kind of prices were achieved for the items you have for sale. Pay no attention to record prices, but be mindful of an average price if multiple sales are noted for like items. Feel free to contact any reference if needed, but understand that some consignors may value their privacy, and an auction house may not be able to disclose the names and contact information of certain sellers. If you feel uncomfortable at any time during this process, either discuss your concerns with the auction house directly or simply refuse to deal with them. It is a major decision to sell one’s collection, and you should feel as comfortable as possible with the auctioneer you are choosing to represent your items for sale. It should be noted that a lot of would-be consignors are turning to the Internet to read online reviews about certain auction houses and auctioneers. Personally, I do not put a lot of faith in these kinds of reviews. More often than not, people who have a negative

the buyer’s premium after this agreement is made. This makes sense for a lot of scarce items or items already graded because the auction house does not have to commit a lot of time to listing or cataloging these items. Condition and authenticity were already done by the third-party grading company in question. It should be noted, however, that this is the exception and should never be expected. Most consignors do not have these kinds of items. The time and effort of the auction house must also be called into question. What about the seller of a massive action figure collection that has to be researched and cataloged? Or the tool collector who has two sheds full of antique tools? These situations involve a lot of time and energy for any auctioneer willing to take on the challenge. In my next and final article in this series, I will answer these questions and more. I thank you for reading.

Make Holiday Memories At “A Brandywine Christmas” From the spectacular Ogauge model train display with trains running on nearly 2,000 feet of track to the collection of rare antique dolls dressed in beautiful period clothing, plus thousands of whimsical critters (ornaments and decorations handcrafted by Brandywine volunteers from natural materials) displayed on towering trees soaring up through the museum’s three-story atrium, “A Brandywine Christmas” promises delightful family fun, starting Friday, Nov. 27, and running through Thursday, Jan. 7. Events and programs will take place throughout the holiday season, from performances by area musicians and local school choirs to a special Polar Express pajama night. The museum will remain open until 9 p.m. on Thursdays in December with holiday entertainment and programs. The annual Christmas exhibition of the Brandywine River Museum of “Art Railroad” will include nearly 1,000 pieces, from locomotives, passenger and freight trains to clockwork sets and trolleys that pass through a small town, a farm, factories and even a carnival. Antique dolls from the museum’s collection will be on view in an enchanting new display that will depict a sledding party on the hill in front of N.C. Wyeth’s home. The dolls were donated by the family of artist and composer Ann Wyeth McCoy (1915-2005). Trees throughout the museum will be adorned with adorable critters in a wide variety of themes, including dogs, cats, angels, birds and

flowers. Sizes range from small ornaments for Christmas trees to large, tabletop decorations. All critters are made by hand by Brandywine volunteers. The annual Critter Sale will take place on Saturday, Dec. 5, and Sunday, Dec. 6, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The museum will stay open until 9 p.m. on Thursday evenings, Dec. 3, 10, and 17, with musical performances and creative art activities for all ages. The café will be open until 7:30 p.m., serving a special dinner entrée. SHOWS & MARKETS Color And Shape: The Art Of The American Theorem artist had perfected her use of stencils, as indicated by the crisp edges of the leaves and the well-defined forms of the cherries and cherry stems. The sharp outlines of the fruit and basket were accentuated by depressions in the velvet, as if she had traced the edges of some of the shapes with a sharp tool. Four of the 11 works to be on view were once owned by Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, for whom the folk art museum in Colonial Williamsburg is named. Mrs. Rockefeller began amassing her collection in the genre in the late 1920s, a time when few people recognized these works were more than a hobby for the untrained or amateur artists who made them. Guided by early scholars and collectors of folk art, her collected works grew over the next decade to more than 400 pieces, more than half of which later became the basis of the museum. Many of those works were American theorem paintings. (Many other pieces in her collection are on view in Bassett Hall, the Rockefeller home in Colonial Williamsburg.) “Theorem paintings form an excellent bridge between Abby’s interests in early American and modern art. The use of stencils provides for bold colors, patterns and shapes that offer an exciting link between the theorem paintings completed by young ladies and the avantgarde pieces created by modern artists almost a century later,” said Kate Teiken, assistant curator of prints, maps and paintings.

The paint on cotton velvet “Flowers in Fluted Vase” by Brinah DeYoung was done in Baltimore, Md., circa 1830.

This paint on cotton velvet “Fruit, Bird and Butterfly” by an unknown artist is probably of New England origin and circa 1830.

“Color and Shape: Art of the American Theorem” is co-curated by Ms. Barry and Ms. Teiken. The exhibition will be shown in the Mary B. and William Lehman Guyton

Alexander Calder Painting Realizes $109,250 At Cottone Auction silver, sculptures, estate jewelry, American and European furniture, Asian items, Oriental rugs, Native American items, Americana and more. Some of the lots came from The Strong Museum and The Memorial Art Gallery; both are in Rochester, N.Y. A strong example of modern design artwork by the Spanish-born master Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), a rendering on a plate titled “Woman’s Face,” with two stamps on the underside for “Madura Plein Feu” and “D’Apres Picasso,” sold for $25,300. Also, a carved and painted “Tatanua” mask, 16 inches tall, with some loss to the bottom, made $23,000. Exclusive antique clocks from two major collections sparked intense bidding wars. A vibrant and colorful painting by the American artist Alexander Calder (1898-1976), a gouache on Canson and Montgolfier wove paper, titled “Bosbies & Uniforms,” measuring 29.75 by 43-inches (sight), sold for $109,250 at a twoday Fine Art & Antiques Auction. The sale was held Sept. 25 and 26 by Cottone Auctions in the firm’s Geneseo, N.Y., gallery at 120 Court St. All prices include a 15 percent buyer’s premium. That the painting broke through the $100,000 mark came as no real surprise. Works by Calder are highly collectible and in constant demand. He is best known for his kinetic abstract mobiles and floor pieces but was also an adept painter, working in watercolor, oil and gouache. “Bosbies & Uniforms,” typical of Calder’s style, was the top lot in an auction that grossed about $2 million. “Obviously we were thrilled with what the Calder piece sold for, but the fact is the whole sale was strong across the board and across all categories,” said Matt Cottone of Cottone Auctions. “Interest in the Calder painting was matched by the passion bidders showed for clocks, Navajo weavings, Asian items and more. An interesting mix of merchandise added up to a great sale.” About 150 people attended the auction in person over the course of the two days, while around 2,500 others registered to participate online via LiveAuctioneers.com and Invaluable.com. Phone and absentee bidding was brisk as well. “We conduct two major auctions per year, in the spring and the fall. Expectations are high going in. We met those expectations,” said Cottone. The 725-lot auction was packed with American and European paintings, fine antique clocks, lamps by Tiffany and others, art glass,

He was also the individual who inspired Hemingway’s character “Pop” in “Green Hills of Africa.” In addition to guiding Hemingway, he had also guided Theodore Roosevelt and numerous other big game hunters. His rifle carried a presale estimate of $75,000-$150,000 and sold for $80,500. This auction included numerous superb Boss shotguns. One lot with a 410 side lock ejector single trigger game gun in excellent condition carried a presale estimate of $75,000-$125,000 and realized smack dab in the middle at $103,500. One of the most notable names to ever produce English shotguns was the Purdey firm, which still exists today. This sale was simply astounding in terms of both the quality of Purdey shotguns but also the numbers of high-end, quality Purdey shotguns. Most distinguished was a 410 Double with Ken Hunt relief sculptured engraving, a true work of art and probably never fired. It carried a presale estimate of $80,000$120,000 and sold for $103,500. Another Purdey estimated at $55,000$85,000 went out at $74,750. Another Purdey, estimated at $47,500$67,500, went out at $66,125. Yet another Purdey estimated at $50,000-$70,000, realized $65,750. A Purdey estimated at $50,000-$70,000 sold for $57,500. This is just a sampling. Julia’s is not known only for their successes with foreign shotguns but also for its success with American firearms; in fact, they hold the record for the highest auction price for a shotgun at auction (Theodore Roosevelt’s Fox shotgun, which sold for $862,500 in 2010). In this sale, a fine Parker BHE trap gun estimated at $27,500$42,500 realized $43,125. A 410 Parker VHE single trigger skeet gun estimated at $30,000-$50,000 sold for $51,750. A rare 16 ga. Remington 1894 EE grade shotgun from the estate of Andy B. Anderson carried a presale estimate of $35,000$55,000 and went out at $48,875. The second day ended with an extraordinary offering of superb Marlin rifles from a single owner collection. Most notable was the engraved Deluxe Special Order Model 1897, carrying a presale estimate of $50,000$70,000. It shot to $80,500. Another incredible Marlin, probably one of a kind, deluxe engraved Model 1892 with Cheek Piece, carried a presale estimate of $45,000$65,000 and brought $45,400. Day three, Oct. 7, began with volcanics from the Bleakney collection. A rare Lever Action Carbine estimated at $15,000-$25,000 went out at $35,650. Shortly thereafter a wonderful assortment of Winchesters were offered, including an extraordinary Model 73 with brilliant case colors estimated at $35,000-$50,000, which sold for $57,500. A Winchester Model 1876, which at one time was gifted to the famous

Sioux Chief Sitting Bull, carried a presale estimate of $35,000-55,000 and sold for $46,000. Following the Winchesters was a collection of Colts, including a Second Model Dragoon identified to a Civil War sergeant. It was estimated at $15,000-$25,000 and sold for $34,500. Most notable of all the antique Colts offered, however,

ANTIQUE Oak Cigarette Display Case

Fooled By Fakes By Anita Stratos Shelley China used the region name in their backstamps. These are not fake or reproduction pieces; the mark was just used by other companies, so you need to check the shape, design, and any codes to determine which company made them.

There were quite a number of backstamps used during Wileman and Shelley’s 100-year history, so determining whether a backstamp is real or not can require a bit of research. You can find images of many of the Wileman and Shelley backstamps on the websites in the reference section at the end of this column. However, there

are cases where non-Shelley wares with no manufacturer’s mark underneath have had a reproduced Shelley backstamp applied over the glaze. Some of these replica marks are well done and others are not, but if the mark is over the glaze, it wasn’t done by Shelley. Sometimes a glaze will be applied over a replica mark, but you can usually feel the difference in smoothness. A more obvious fake mark is one that is incomplete and/or sloppy or splotchy. Also, you can check the item’s shape and pattern against known Shelley pieces to see if it’s authentic. Not as well known outside of collecting circles are Shelley figurines, some of which can carry quite high values. For example, those signed by Mable Lucie Attwell can sell from hundreds to over a $1,000. These are prices that tend to attract fraudsters. Two of the primary signs of a fake are pieces that are crudely made and/or a bit smaller than they should be. Sometimes a figurine can be similar to the real thing but not quite right. Comparing to an authentic piece or a photo of an authentic piece from a reputable source is a good way to know if it’s real. The ASC points out that two artists whose works are known to have been faked are Mabel Lucie

Attwell’s Boo Boo figurines and John Bull’s character jugs, though there are others as well. Now here’s an area that’s a little different - “doctored” Shelley wares. The ASC describes these as authentic Shelley pieces that have had decorations added to make them more valuable. Typical types of china that fall into this category are genuine Shelley whiteware pieces (which, of course, are marked correctly with real Shelley backstamps) that have had decorations applied to them. Some of these include nursery or chintz patterns, along with others. Some fraudsters will claim that these pieces are rare or newly discovered patterns, but buyers need to use caution and authenticate the pattern before investing. And then there are “innocents,” coincidental similarities between Shelley and other makers. These products were not made to deceive, but unscrupulous sellers may use these likenesses to market the products as Shelley in order to get a higher price for them. Some of these innocents include other makers’ items marked “Foley,” “Foley China,” etc.; authentic Shelley whiteware that has been handpainted by amateur artists and could be misrepresented as rare, one-of-a-kind, or newly discovered; a similar backstamp to Wileman’s “W & Co” mark being used by a contemporary potter. In the last case, the difference between the contemporary mark and Wileman’s is that Wileman used an ampersand (&) and the contemporary potter uses the word “and.” Unfortunately, there are known cases of resellers mistakenly identifying the contemporary pieces as Wileman; no fraud was intended, but as always, it’s buyer beware. There’s no question that Shelley has produced some very distinctive and sometimes even whimsical shapes and patterns throughout the course of their history. The range of colors and patterns, from bright and contemporary to more subdued and classic, in both the bone china and earthenware divisions, illustrate their high standards as well as the creativity and versatility of their artists. Even today, these vintage pieces fit into and enhance 21st century homes beautifully. All photos are of fakes, courtesy of the Australasian Shelley Club. At A Glance Signs of a fake or reproduction: 1. Backstamp over the glaze 2. Crude workmanship 3. Handpainted pieces in shapes never made by Shelley 4. Authentic Shelley pieces with added nonShelley artwork Reference books, websites, and collecting groups are the best ways to keep from being fooled by fakes. Here are a few: Australasian Shelley Club (www.shelleyclub.com); National Shelley China Club (www.shelleychinaclub.com); Shelley Group (www.shelley.co.uk); Collecting Shelley Pottery by Robert Prescott Walker.

Little did the Wileman family know back in 1862 that when they hired Joseph Shelley as a salesman, he would take charge of their Foley china production in 1870 and bring his son Percy into the company in 1881. Little did they know that Percy would end up running the entire company for 50 years, eventually changing the name and the backstamp to Shelley. Early on, Joseph Shelley concentrated on improving the quality of the china, part of which included adding more bone to strengthen it while keeping the china fine and translucent. When Percy came on board, he hired highly talented artists who came up with new shapes and designs for both the earthenware and china divisions. By the 1940s, the pottery side of the business ceased, and the company focused totally on bone china, which enjoyed a strong export business even during World War II. However, Shelley experienced a slowdown in innovation, and during the 1950s, their products began to look outdated; in addition, less expensive pottery was in more demand than bone china. Although Shelley produced some new abstract design patterns in the 1960s, they didn’t perform well enough, and Shelley was finally sold to Allied Potteries in 1966. Allied continued selling what was left of the stock in warehouses until it was depleted. Some Shelley china shapes are so distinctive (like the wellknown Dainty teacups) you can usually recognize them before you even turn the piece over to check the backstamp. Even though Shelley hasn’t been in production for 50 years, many of the pieces are still affordable; however, others command quite a high price. The Australasian Shelley Club (ASC) has been extremely generous in sharing with me information about Shelley fakes, as well as supplying the photos of fakes that accompany this column. They, along with their U.S. counterpart (National Shelley Club), are an outstanding group of people who are always ready to help collectors determine if they have the real thing. One stumbling block new collectors hit is backstamps that contain the name “Foley.” Many times, buyers think this is an indication of an old Wileman piece, but that isn’t always the case. Foley was a pottery region, and a number of companies

A Moonlight Dreadnought bait and box, from Paw Paw, Mich., realized $29,280.

Dreadnought bait and box, Paw Paw, Mich., estimated at $4,000-$7,000, had one collector moonstruck at $29,280. A Wiggle Tail Minnow Co. lure from Detroit, Mich., circa 1912, estimated at $5,000-$10,000, realized a not-so-little $23,180. Other irresistible sales highlights include an EC Adams Jersey Expert with box and paper, estimated at $8,000-$12,000, which sold for $19,520, and a Moonlight Paw Paw Underwater Minnow with box, which was estimated at $4,000$6,000 but more than tripled its high estimate to realize $18,300. Rods and reels were also well represented in this sale. Bidders seemed to be hooked on the fine examples from the many companies and individual craftsmen on offer. An HS Gillum deluxe salmon fly rod, bag and tube, estimated at $600$1,000, had one collector fully equipped at $1,708. A new-inthe-box EJ Sellers The HS Gillum deluxe Deluxe Bas-Kit reel, salmon fly rod, bag and estimated at $500tube sold for $1,708. $1,000, reeled in

$1,300. A rare and historically important Peter A. Altmaeir 1869 patent handle reel sold for $6,000, well within its $5,000-$10,000 estimate. Other reel-deal highlights include a Philbrook & Paine marbleized salmon reel, an HL Leonard bi-metal raised pillar salmon reel, and a JF and BF Meek #1 brass Kentucky reel that sold for $12,200, $9,760, and $4,270, respectively. A good selection of fishing related ephemera and collectibles rounded out this well-curated sale. These included fishing licenses and buttons, advertising, and fine and folk carvings, among other rarities. Collectors fell hook, line, and sinker over a circa 1930 South Bend fishing tackle display, which was estimated at $800-$1,500 and realized $3,250. An incredible Nash of Maine brook trout mount, estimated at $4,000$6,000, came to life at $7,500. And a 1912 Bristol Fishing Rods calendar, estimated at $500-$1,500, stood the test of time to realize $2,000. “I could not be more pleased with the results of this debut sales event. We had over 300 online bidders, 65 people live at the sale, and a 99.5 percent sell-through rate. Our top consignor was in the

audience and was delighted and overwhelmed with the results. We have already started accepting consignments for our next semiannual fishing auction, scheduled for April 2016,” said Joe Stagnitti, division head of the Antique and Vintage Fishing Tackle, Baits, and Ephemera Division at Morphy Auctions. It’s no fish tale to say that Morphy’s debut antique fishing sales event was a phenomenal success! Led by Morphy’s department head and well-known industry expert Joe Stagnitti, this auction featured over 550 of the most interesting and collectible fishing baits and lures, reels and rods, accessories, and related ephemera in recent memory. And collectors seemed to agree, with 35 lots realizing $2,000 or above, 13 lots realizing $5,000 or more, and six lots casting past $10,000. This auction featured an enormous selection of amazing baits and lures from famous manufacturers, including James Heddon, William Shakespeare Jr., Creek Chub, and Pflueger. Speaking of Confederate items, the collection of Civil War firearms and fighting knives belonging to James Maconkey was offered in this sale. His fine CH Rigdon Augusta, GA, CSA marked Confederate revolver was estimated at $40,000-$60,000 and went out over estimate at $63,250. A rare Confederate Dance Dragoon revolver estimated at $45,000-$60,000 went out over high estimate at $67,500. Another rare Civil War and Confederate collection included the fabulous fighting knives amassed by noted collector John Ashworth. His Confederate Bowie knife made at Etowah Iron Works in Georgia was inscribed and at one time used by Capt. E. M. Seago. It brought $37,375. Another noteworthy collection in this sale was that of Dr. Geoffrey Sturgess of

Zurich, Switzerland. His massive collection of auto loading weapons had been divided up into various sessions, this one being just about the last of the offering of Sturgess’ arms. An extraordinary Swiss/UK trials prototype Luger Rig SN 30 realized $57,500. The Sturgess collection also included a group of rare Gabbet Fairfax Mars Model 1901 pistols. Most notable in this sale, however, was the Gabbet Fairfax that accompanied its original holster, a rare accessory. This gun, estimated at $40,000-$60,000, sold for $69,000. As always, this Julia auction included an offering of Class III machine guns. A GM Frigidaire M-2 Browning 50 cal. machine gun estimated at $30,000-$50,000 sold slightly above $47,000. A ZB26 with Nazi proofs was estimated at $25,000-$35,000 and sold for $46,000. Also performing well was a rare MP 43 with ZF4 Scope rail. It was estimated at $15,000-$22,000 (Continued on page 19)
