Mickey Mantle Rookie Card Propels Heritage Sports Auction Sale Marks First $1 Million Auction Sale Of A Post-World War II Baseball Card The last major catalog sale of 2016 has proven to be the richest of the calendar year, drawing $14,037,343 in winning bids (not counting post-auction sales, which have already surpassed $250,000 and remain ongoing through Dec. 4) and carrying the annual sales of Heritage Sports past the $56 million mark. High-grade trading card singles led the charge, with 14 commanding winning bids in excess of $100,000, including a record $1,135,250 for a PSA NM-MT+ 8.5 example of the celebrated 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle. The card is the first $1 million auction sale of a post-World War II baseball card. The three-day sale was held Nov. 17 to 19. “The results validate the simple formula that has made Heritage the industry leader,” explained Chris Ivy, director of Heritage Sports Collectibles. “Present the hobby’s finest material to the hobby’s largest bidding audience, and record prices will come.” A PSA Good 2 example of the fabled T206 Honus Wagner trounced the standing record for the grade in the day one trading card session, drawing a victorious bid of $776,750 to validate the Old Dutchman’s enduring hobby legacy. The Gary Carter collection, featuring the personal keepsakes of the Hall of Fame catcher, headlined the second session of the auction, drawing $550,000 in bids for a wide array of game-used gear, awards and general ephemera. Leading the charge was the baseball that recorded the final out of the historic 1986 World Series at $71,700, by far the highest figure achieved for a post-war last out sphere. Swann Galleries’ Oct. 27 sale of Rare and Important Travel Posters set at least 10 auction records. The selection reflected the rapidly changing technology and styles that epitomized the beginning of the 20th century. The top lot was an example of Paul George Lawler’s iconic “Fly to South Sea Isles / Via Pan American,” circa 1938, which set an auction record for the artist at $20,000. The image, a variant with text rarely found at auction, features a massive “flying boat.” Another example of early aviation advertising is Jupp Wiertz’ “2 Days to Europe / Hamburg – American Line,” 1936, which depicts a zeppelin hovering near the Empire State Building; this moody poster sold for $10,000. In a similar vein, an early airline advertisement for “Imperial Airways / The ‘Silver Wing’ De Luxe,” by Charles C. Dickson, circa 1927, shows a passenger sticking her hand out of the airborne plane to wave at a friend on the earth. The charming reminder of just how strange it is to fly sold for $11,875, an auction record for the artist. Another record was set for Frederic Kimball Mizen’s “Fifth Avenue – New York / The World’s Greatest Shopping Street,” 1932, which sold for $6,250. The price nearly doubled the previous record, set by Swann in 1999–the only other time this rare poster has been seen at auction. Other notable lots include

literally be able to step inside a miniature world of them. This unique advertising experience worked, and those now defunct World of Nintendo set-ups became the blueprint for Nintendo’s own flagship World of Nintendo superstore located in the heart of New York City (if you are a Nintendo fan, plan to visit at least once). Today, collectors of vintage Nintendo advertising have a lot to choose from. The most popular and most expensive advertising pieces are definitely vintage Mario statues that stand several feet tall, any kind of lighted or neon original advertising signs, and almost anything printed with the words World of Nintendo. And no true collector would want to go without an original locking World of Nintendo lighted cabinet that was used by stores to hold merchandise and reduce theft. Nintendo released so much advertising during just the late 1980s to the 1990s that no complete listing is known to exist. This is a big issue and one reason why I don’t recommend the average enthusiast start to collect vintage Nintendo advertising. It has become too hard to identify reproduction and fantasy pieces versus original vintage items.

Unfortunately, because of the rise of fantasy pieces, affordable 3D printing, and over-enthusiastic fans, the multitude of fakes and fantasy pieces has risen dramatically. A lot of these items are readily available through internet auction sites, lesser-known auctioneers, and even some antique centers. Often these items have virtually no value on the collector market and can be extremely hard to differentiate from authentic pieces. A very large percentage of items sold on eBay are fakes or fantasy pieces. Anyone claiming to be able to sell you an authentic vintage neon lighted Nintendo sign for less than a few hundred dollars is sure to have a reproduction on their hands. This is wreaking havoc on a market that desperately needs a comprehensive listing of original advertising pieces. Worse still are the multitude of enthusiasts who just don’t care about buying authentic vintage pieces when reproductions are readily available at a much lower cost. Still worse than the confusion that is engulfing the vintage market is what is occurring in the contemporary market. Retail store employees are getting ahold of contemporary Nintendo advertising

Coca-Cola helped define successful advertising to American consumers. The company has a long history of bright and colorful advertising that spans more than 100 years. The collectability and investment of early vintage Coca-Cola advertising has seen a metamorphic rise thanks in part to the popularity of television shows like “Antiques Roadshow” and “American Pickers.” Auction houses that specialize in vintage advertising have seen an overall rise in prices for the best quality pieces. Ironically, it is interest in antique and vintage advertising that is driving younger collectors to focus on the not-too-distant past in more modern collecting fields. And make no mistake, when it comes to modern mass-produced collectibles, Nintendo is king. When the original Nintendo Entertainment System debuted in the United States in late 1985, it was almost guaranteed to flop. The console received little advertising at first and was test marketed in only New York and Los Angeles. Little by little, the company that had massive success in video

game arcades in its home country of Japan managed to sell a few thousand units here and a few thousand units there, partly due to its ingenious decision to package the system with the hit game Super Mario Bros. By 1987, the Nintendo Entertainment System would become the hottest selling Christmas item, thanks in part to the launch of Super Mario Bros. 2 and The Adventure of Link - both bonafide classic games of yesteryear. The success of the original Nintendo Entertainment System brought forth a lot of competitors who wanted to capture the lion’s share of the home video game market. This caused Nintendo to innovate and advertise in a variety of unique ways. One way the company chose to create a competitive advantage was to create mini “World of Nintendo” stores located in larger toy and department stores. These locales would be cost effective and showcase some of the most incredible pieces of vintage advertising produced by Nintendo. Stores would be given point of sale displays, advertising signs, merchandise, and posters so that consumers would not only visually see the latest Nintendo products, but also

and attempting to sell it on the secondary marketplace at insane prices. Unfortunately, most of these attempts backfire, but collectors need to realize that much like contemporary Coca-Cola advertising, most of the new advertising released will never have much collector value. Most enthusiasts want authentic vintage pieces. Newer pieces are overproduced and overhoarded. Very few collectors are going to want advertising from the more modern contemporary Nintendo eras. A good rule of thumb to use is if the piece was made after the launch of the Nintendo GameCube in 2001, you are most likely dealing with a more contemporary item. Most hardcore collectors want to own something that shows the history of the company instead, which is why anything authentic and bearing the coveted “World

On Nov. 16, Claude Monet’s “Meule (Grainstack) realized $81,447,500 at Christie’s New York and achieved a world auction record for the artist. Painted in 1891, the painting is recognized as one of finest examples of Monet’s Grainstack series. “Meule was sold to an anonymous client on the phone with Margot Rosenberg, director, client advisory, after a 14minute bidding battle involving four different Christie’s specialists and a client in the room. The sale’s auctioneer was Andreas Rumbler, Christie’s deputy chairman. “Monet’s Grainstack is the culmination of 25 canvases painted of the same subject in varying light and weather conditions over many months between 1890 and 1891. From Our Files By Andrew Richmond Society’s traditions come and go, oftentimes for the better as our understanding of the world evolves, but I find it sad that one tradition in particular has faded away: that of the Grand Tour. While today we associate the idea of the Grand Tour with the late 19th century, in reality the custom began as early as the 17th century, rooted in the idea of religious pilgrim to Rome. In fact, it was during this time that travel began to be seen not just as a means to an end, but as a worthwhile process in and of itself, as something done for pleasure, enrichment and intellectual curiosity. Reading Public Museum Announces Return Of Pelican Sculpture By Earl L. Poole 1974 near Museum Road as the formal entry to the arboretum in time for the museum’s 70th anniversary. The grouping was restored in 1996, removing the corrosion that had occurred over the years. Earl Lincoln Poole was a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia and the recipient of an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster. Poole was a recognized painter of birds and animals and was appointed to the museum’s staff in 1925. He was named director in 1938 and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1957. The RPM includes an impressive arboretum that covers 25 acres of lushly appointed and carefully maintained natural beauty. An accredited station for the United States Bureau of Plant Industry, many of the 65 distinctive specimens in the park today are from the original planting in the late 1920s. Large, exotic trees are interspersed with indigenous trees and shrubs, providing fresh air and cooling shade during the summer. The Wyomissing Creek, which The “Pelicans” bronze statue, as seen today, has returned flows through to the Reading Public Museum’s arboretum. the arboretum

Collecting vintage Nintendo advertising can easily be compared to collecting vintage Coca-Cola advertising. However, unlike the vintage Coca-Cola advertising market, collectors need to exercise extreme caution due to the fact that there are very few experts in

After nearly two decades, the beloved bronze “Pelicans” (1931), by Earl Lincoln Poole (1891-1972), the Reading Public Museum’s (RPM) second director, will be placed in the museum’s arboretum. Completed in 1931, the bronze grouping served for years as a fountain on the museum’s grounds as the centerpiece of the rose garden. Levi Mengel, RPM’s first director, remarked in January of 1932, a few months after the work was originally installed, that “the sculpture has been much admired by artists, sculptors and museum men. Many favorable comments have been made concerning the effort of Mr. Poole.” The work was cast at the J. Arthur Limerick Co. in Baltimore, Md., in the summer of 1931. The Grand Tour Continued from page 5

Not all Grand Tour souvenirs were inspired by the ancients. Many artists capitalized on the Grand Tour souvenir craze and began producing works based on antiquities for the tourist market. Frescoist Pietro Paoletti (1801-47) produced small plaster casts (called intaglios) that were originally sold in albums that appeared to be leatherbound books. Small collections of these intaglios often appear on the market, and occasionally larger collections in the original albums do. This collection of 24 albums is believed to be the largest collection to have come to market, and it sold for a whopping $25,000 at Freeman’s in May of 2016.

Some tourists would venture as far south as Naples and Pompeii, or, as travel later improved, visitors sometimes went to Sicily or made tentative explorations around the Mediterranean, but usually from Rome or Naples they turned north again, bearing west for the return trip across the Alps in order to visit the Germanic part of Europe: Vienna, Berlin, Munich – before looping back through Holland and crossing the Channel home. origins and George and Nicholas’s mutual passion for the images. Curated by Nicholas, “Czech Travel Posters from the Lowry Collection” showcases 43 travel posters that span several decades, many of them being exhibited for the first time. For a small country, Czechoslovakia produced a large number of posters, owing to a combination of the country’s rich artistic legacy and strong economic climate. The travel posters are a unique form of advertising showcasing the beauty, intrigue, and architecture of the Czech lands, sometimes urging tourists (in German, English or French) to visit such wonders in Czechoslovakia as Brno or Kutna Hora. Other posters extol the sporting opportunities in Czechoslovakia, such as golf or skiing. A few are in Czech, printed to promote internal tourism and travel.

Pearl Harbor Memorabilia With the anniversary upon us of the famous “Day of Infamy,” the attack on Pearl Harbor, collectors of historical items might be surprised at the lack of relics that exist from that memorable day on Dec. 7, 1941. Of course, there is a plethora of World War II memorabilia, but indeed a scarcity from the day of the fateful attack over Hawaii itself. But first a bit about the day and the events leading up to it. “At seven-thirty in the morning of Sunday, December 7, 1941, the United States being at peace with all nations, a flight of Japanese airplanes descended without warning on the island of Oahu, Hawaii…, killing several thousand United States soldiers, sailors, and marines. which will live in infamy….” Those words, spoken by President Franklin Roosevelt, alarmed most Americans that the danger and horror of another world war was soon to include them. What had been occurring in Europe the past few years had not directly affected many Americans, until now. But the attack on Pearl Harbor did. World War I, the “war to end war,” had barely ended. Tension between the United States and Japan had been increasing, particularly since the Japanese invasion of the Manchuria in 1931. Throughout the 1930s, Japan kept expanding its base in China. Finally, war between the two countries erupted in 1937, with Japan’s objective being to achieve resource independence. Western countries, including the United States, England, and France, became increasingly concerned with the Japanese actions, prompting them to provide loan assistance to the Republic of China. Japan then proceeded to invade French Indochina in an attempt to control supplies from reaching China. The United States then stopped shipments of aviation gasoline, machine tools, airplanes, and other vital military items to Japan. The U.S. actions were considered to be unfriendly actions by the Japanese. However, the U.S. stopped short of cutting off oil exports, on which the Japanese depended greatly. That would soon change early

when it actually occurred. Any talks by Japanese officials, who were in Washington, D.C., at the time under the guise of negotiating peace with U.S. officials, were now cut off. A few days later, Congress declared war on Japan. After delaying the inevitable, America was now committed to its allies in WWII. The Second World War would last until 1945. Millions perished in the war, and the world’s culture would be forever changed. In the end, democracy prevailed, but only after a tremendous cost of human life. It is now 75 years since that infamous December day, but the day still stirs emotions for many, alive at the time or not. in 1941, after Japan expanded into French Indochina. In August 1941, President Roosevelt warned Japan that the U.S. would take whatever steps necessary against Japan if it proceeded to attack “neighboring countries.” Japan and the U.S. attempted to negotiate in 1941 to improve relations, but to many, it seemed that the Japanese were merely stalling for time. During the summer and fall of 1941, the Japanese prepared for what seemed imminent to many. Then came the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7. The attack was meant to deliver a blow to American morale, as well as to destroy vital American fleet units before they could prevent additional Japanese conquests. Although the Pearl Harbor attack was expected by many, it still came as a surprise

Joseph Solomon, for $20,700. “While it’s not exactly a surprise because these are top-of-the-line items, I think it’s fair to say we weren’t expecting such universal success,” said Lewis. “The big allure for these was that many of them were so rare. The top selling items were Civil War era, and most still had their Factory engraved and inscribed Savage Model 1907 semiautomatic pistol, this was presented to William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody by The Savage Firearms Company and sold for $69,000. scabbards, which are becoming increasingly difficult to find.” The top long gun lot

The impressive Clifford (Cliff) and Lynne Young collection of Confederate Arms was the highlight of Cowan’s Historic Firearms and Militaria Auction on Nov. 1 and 2. The collection had 14 of the top 25 lots in the sale, including the top lot, an original cased pair of LeMat Second Model percussion revolvers, which sold for $83,375. This was part two of the Young collection, with the third and final installment to be sold in 2017. “The Young collection is revered not just for its rarity and condition, but because much of it hasn’t been on the market for decades, in some cases more than half a century,” said Jack Lewis, Cowan’s director of historic firearms and early militaria. “People are saying this is a soft market right now, but we’re seeing that great items like those found in this wonderful collection are holding their ground and bringing good prices.” Other firearms of note from the collection included a Spiller & Burr rounded frame percussion revolver selling for $48,875; an engraved LeMat 1st Model percussion revolver for $37,950; a Confederate Cook & Brother carbine for $29,900; and a Baby LeMat percussion revolver for $28,750. The hottest items of the sale were the edged weapons, though, with many inciting bidding wars and exceeding estimates. The top swords were a Firmin & Sons Confederate Naval Officers sword selling for $32,200; a Confederate Officer’s Staff and Field sword by B. Douglas for $27,600; and a Confederate Foot Officers sword by Dufiho New Orleans,

Dating to World War II, a Thompson M1 submachine gun from 1942, martially marked, sold for $21,850. Funds from the sale of the weapon will be used to buy body cameras for the Amherst (Virginia) Police Department.
