looking at photos of pieces made at the dawn of her career, she had cler-asglass memories of each and every one: “here’s how we made that”. . . .”gosh, that one’s pretty”. . . .and even, “that piece was hell to do”. Her comments were down-toearth, entertaining, and always informative: • “When I was a young girl, I made all kinds of things. I’d make clothes for my dolls. My mother sewed a lot, and I would just drive her crazy. ‘Can I have this scrap?’ I’d say, and she’d say ‘wait ‘til I get through, please, Fran.’” • “My mother was the only one of my family interested in art. She did a drawing of a storm, a big drawing, with the lightning striking and all. It was a good drawing. She’d had eleven art lessons. She used to always say that, ‘I had eleven art lessons.’ But then she couldn’t do any more.” • “Michael and I almost starved to death when we first started out. One time a sales agent from New York asked if we’d make things for him, but we didn’t do so well; our pieces were hard to sell. The agent said, ‘the trouble with you two is you make everything too sophisticated. You’re too far ahead of your time.’ But we didn’t know how to make it differently.” • “With our type of work, you have to see not just what you are doing, but what it’s going to look like when it’s all done. You have to see that in your mind.” • “I’m pleased with most of the things I’ve made. I don’t have ‘favorites’, but there are always certain things about certain pieces that I like. Of course, there are some where I think ‘oh, I wish I hadn’t done that, I wish I hadn’t’. But I’m not going to tell you which ones! Because really, I don’t even remember the ones that aren’t right. If it doesn’t turn out, I go on to something else. When people like what you do, you can do that.” • “I didn’t think I would live this long, but luckily there’s always something new to try. It’s worth plenty.’ ‘I know,’ I said. ‘I’m Higgins.’” Frances Higgins, 2003 Fran always seemed flattered—if at times a bit bewildered—by the attention her work received from collectors. Higgins glass was what Michael and Fran made. Higgins glass collecting was something other people did. She often liked to recount her first exposure to Higgins on eBay. A friend pulled up an ongoing Higgins auction. Frances recognized it as a dish that originally sold for “$2.50 or less—probably less.” On a whim, Fran’s friend sent an email to the seller: would he like details about the original

The 323lot event to be held at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas

will feature primarily PCGSgraded US coins in an elegantly low-key environment. “For our initial outing as the official auctioneer for the PCGS Members Only Show, we’ve taken a connoisseur’s approach, which favors quality over quantity, said LegendMorphy co-owner Laura

Sperber. “We’ve refined the selection for this auction using very strict guidelines, and as a result, each coin that made the final cut is a truly superb

example. The ultimate prize, a 1919D half dollar PCGS MS65, boasts surfaces as clean and boldly lustrous as what one

might find on a common-date MS66. With very crisply struck details, including the full split on Miss Liberty’s thumb so clear it is visible to the naked eye, this coin is the first 1919-D to appear at auction in six years. In 2006, a comparable coin sold for $172,500. With its combination of unbelievable

condition and terrific eye appeal, the example in LegendMorphy’s Las Vegas sale is expected to command $200,000 to $225,000. Other December 13 auction highlights include: • 1896 PCGS PR66+ DCAM CAC $10, finest (Continued on page 5)

As a thank you to our clients we are reducing the prices on a selection of our inventory for the holiday season. We have lowered prices on selected artwork up to 50% off regular retail pricing. This is a special opportunity to buy excellent examples of Pennsylvania Impressionism. Artwork by Harry Leith-Ross, Henry Snell, Antonio Martino, Fern Coppedge and Arthur Meltzer (among others) will be reduced. These heavily discounted prices will be noted on the hang tags and will be final. Come in and enjoy it all.

Don’t miss out on this rare opportunity!

fancies on display. The reason for holding the show, according to Kohler, is that “I always have an abundance of jewelry dealers asking to participate in my events. When I added the April New York City show at the Bohemian National Hall, the jewelry dealers were calling me to see if I had any booths available. Because I didn’t want more than a few jewelry dealers in that show, I decided to initiate an all-jewelry show. I think that holding it during the first weekend of Antiques Week in New York is a great way for

people to start their shopping week.” She went on to explain that she had been aware of this fabulous facility while researching sites for future shows. She also found out that another show promoter had been running some jewelry shows in New York, but had gone out of business. “There is a need on the part of both the customer and the exhibitor for this type of event, and we saw a window of opportunity, and are thrilled to be filling this need,” she concluded. The show will be held 2 times a year, with a second date in

Allison Kohler of JMK Shows is pleased to announce an exciting new jewelry show in New York City on January 19th and 20th, 2013. This is an ideal date for a new show, as it is the first weekend of “Antiques Week,” New York’s celebration of antiques and fine art that takes place every January. The elegant venue for the show will be the Pratt Mansions Fifth Avenue, which is located directly across the street from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and faces Central Park. Consisting of three separate mansions from the late 19th century, they have been carefully preserved and interconnected on the inside to create a beautiful series of rooms. The interior of this graceful Belle Epoch landmark structure has a varied and stylish assortment of settings, from a sweeping staircase to a woodpaneled receiving room, an elegant ballroom, and a lovely formal parlor. What better venue for a glittering jewelry show in the middle of winter? Featured will be 25 vendors showing magnificent antique, estate, vintage, costume and designer jewelry. In addition there will be some ladies’ accessories, such as handbags and other feminine
