In this sale, prices doubled estimates for works by Kenojuak Ashevak, Osuitok Ipeelee, Jessie Oonark, and Pauta Saila and tripled for works by John Tiktak, Lionel Samuels, and Judas Ullulaq, to mention only a few,” said owner Jeff Walker. A California Clubhouse western whiskey fifth and a Dr. R. Parker western medicine posted identical selling prices of $23,100 each at Auction #62, an Internet and catalog auction held Nov. 6 to 15 by American Bottle Auctions (www.americanbottle.com). In all, 199 lots (totaling 350 bottles) changed hands in an auction that grossed a little under $225,000. “The California Clubhouse is truly a great bottle and one of the top western fifths out there,” said Jeff Wichmann of American Bottle Auctions. “The Dr. R. Parker bottle (Indian TLA-Quillaugh’s Balsam, San Francisco) is so rare that a lot of western bottle collectors don’t even know it exists. This was just the third one we’ve sold. dates for Auction #62, another auction was announced, with nearly identical dates. Then two others came on, so at one time there were four auctions, all selling similar items. It’s just too much.” “We have a corner on western bottles, so whatever happens in that arena, we have that category pretty well locked up. But overall, I think we may be maxing out on bottle auctions. One auction house has had eight this year alone. They run 600-800 bottles per sale, and it’s hard for collectors to keep up. The good news is, buyers have lots of options. They’re in control now,” added Wichmann. included annual staff parties held at the clubhouse through the 1950s, at which all estate families received gifts from the du Ponts before a tree glowing with new-fangled “bubble” lights. Also new this year is a tree celebrating the Winterthur Garden in autumn, inspired by the colors of the season and H. F. du Pont’s boyhood collections of rocks, shells, and other trophies of the natural world that started him on a lifetime of collecting. Prepare to be further dazzled by the new tree sparkling with stained glass, a tribute to the Winterthur major exhibition “Tiffany Glass: Painting
with Color and Light,” also on view in the galleries. Finally, for those visitors who come back year after year to see “Yuletide at Winterthur’s” signature creation, the Dried Flower Tree, this magnificent homage to the Winterthur Garden will return to its original venue in the Conservatory for its 30th anniversary, surrounded by a living tribute of flowers and blooming plants that bring the garden to life in the depths of winter. For more information on “Yuletide at Winterthur” tours and programming, including updates, visit www.winterthur.org.

The vendors of the Grist Mill Antiques Center in Pemberton, N.J., invite shoppers to join them for a Christmas celebration. The coop’s beautiful table is ready for guests, set with Lenox Holiday china, a festive pattern made popular in 1974 by the premier china company in the USA. In 1889, Walter Scott Lenox opened the Ceramic Art Company, offering one-of-akind art pieces made from translucent ivory china. In the early 1900s, he turned his attention to creating elegant dinnerware as a well-dressed table became a sign of wealth and opulence in the new century. Lenox took center stage in 1918 when Edith Wilson, the wife of President Woodrow Wilson, commissioned them to design an official state service of 1,700 pieces. Since that time, it remains the only china in continual use at the White House. Four subsequent presidents - Franklin Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Ronald Reagan, and George W. Bush - have all given Lenox the privilege of updating the official service, leaving its mark on the nation’s history and solidifying its reputation. With the holidays fast approaching, the Grist Mill Antiques Center welcomes

Premier Toy Sales Event Slated At Morphy Auctions Morphy Auctions is pleased to announce an anticipated toy sales event to be held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Dec. 18, 19, and 20, perfectly timed for holiday shopping. All lots in this sale are currently on display available for preview in Morphy’s auction gallery. Day one will launch with a playful selection of over 275 lots of dolls, related accessories, and fine vintage plush toys. Two French examples, a “Bebe Modele,” estimated at $15,000-$25,000, and a spectacular Jumeau Triste, estimated at $10,000-$15,000, will capture the hearts of doll enthusiasts worldwide.
Collectors will also get the warm and fuzzies over the great selection of vintage “button-in-ear” brand bears and animals on offer. There’s no way to avoid a plush-crush when it comes to this sale’s 20-inch-tall, early 1900s, white center-seamed Steiff Teddy bear, estimated at $3,500$5,000. This auction’s selection of holiday ephemera, including candy containers, nodders, decorations, figures, and toys, is certainly cause for celebration. It’s all treats and no tricks when it comes to a 20.5inch-tall rare Halloween Felt Pumpkin Man, estimated at $4,000-$6,000. This example, in all original condition with no damages or repairs, is one of only a handful known in existence. Cast-iron toys and doorstops have a solid showing in day one. Leading the parade of toy heavy hitters is a 24.5-inch-long Hubley fourhorse Royal Circus Calliope Wagon, estimated at $3,500$5,000. This festive and rare piece, in excellent condition, consists of a blue and gold calliope, four black horses, a driver, and a calliope player. The wagon is finely painted and further detailed with ornate wheels. A 12-inch-tall Hubley Bugler Boy doorstop (estimated at The 15.5-inch rare Bru “Bebe $2,500-$3,000) and 19-inch-tall Modele” doll is estimated at $15,000- a Bradley and $25,000. Hubbard Deco Lady doorstop with rubber bumpers, estimated at $2,000$5,000, will freeze enthusiasts in their tracks. Both are extremely collectible and in excellent condition.

Collectors will no doubt get wound up over an important 1920s era orange and black Marklin Torpedo clockwork automobile, estimated at $12,000-$16,000. Its remarkable detailing includes an original windshield, three opening doors, a front license plate marked “IA 5208,” and tin litho wheels. This handpainted beauty, pictured on page 116 of Peter Ottenheimer’s “Automobile” book, is believed to be the only completely original example in existence today. Change is in the air with this sale’s offering of about a dozen nice German penny toys. Lucky highlights here include a dapperly dressed rider on a motorcycle and two soldiers fighting on a grass-green

The games begin again on day two of this auction with almost 70 lots of fine marbles. A selection of sulfide, Lutz, swirl, onionskin, Joseph’s Coat, boxed sets, and other wellrounded categories make this sale fair game for every collector. An early period, 1.75-inchdiameter example truly has “flower power” and shoots to a top spot with its $800-$1,200 estimate. This rare, unglazed china example features five red bands with two opposing blue and yellow dot flowers surrounded by green foliage.
Space toys and robots remain popular categories, and this auction’s amazing selections should send collectors into orbit. Three exceptional robots include a nearmint mechanical Deep Sea diver robot (estimated at $6,000-$9,000); a battery operated Japanese Tin Litho Robby Space Patrol (estimated at $6,000-$9,000); and a friction powered Space Adventure robot, which is estimated at $2,000-$4,000. more than 70 years later. Although the Japanese government had intended to deliver the declaration of war to the United States 30 minutes before the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941, the Japanese embassy in Washington, D.C., took too long to decode the document, so the formal declaration was delivered two hours after the attack. The U.S.S. Arizona, hit with a bomb near her second turret, was among the deadliest causalities of Pearl Harbor. The explosion that followed killed more than 1,100 crew members on board. Because the attack was a surprise, only eight Army Air Force pilots managed to get into the air to defend Pearl Harbor. On the ground below, hundreds were trapped inside capsized ships, and more than 300 aircraft were severely damaged at Wheeler Airfield by Japanese bombers. Following the chaos of the attack, sailors from smaller ships attempted to extinguish the flames erupting from the sunken battleship West Virginia. Accompanying “Witnesses to History: Pearl Harbor” is an online exhibition featuring high-resolution images, interactive maps, and more. To learn more, visit www.gilderlehrman.org/pearl harbor.
