Rhoads And Rhoads Lasoes A Big One At Thanksgiving Weekend Sale H
istory can repeat itself, and after 30 years, Rhoads and Rhoads has taken advantage of the hypnotic buying mood that surrounds Thanksgiving weekend, nearly grossing seven figures at their sale held Nov. 29 and 30 in Spring City, Pa. The auction was led by the bronze sculpture titled “The End of the Trail” by famous American sculptor James Earle Fraser, measuring 31 inches tall, signed, and cast at the Roman

Bronze Works Foundry in Brooklyn, N.Y., circa 1918, first edition No. 14 (of 33 known). The final selling price was $483,800, and the audience responded with applause. It was bought by an agent on behalf of an advanced collector of bronzes. “He realized he paid a lot, but they had to have it,” stated the buyer. James Earle Fraser (1876-1953) was an iconic figure in the world of American sculpture and was shaped at an early age by the American West. The story behind this two-day sale had to do with the material having descended in the Dorrance and Groves families. Many of the h i g h ticket i t e m s were from this major consignment. The Groves bought the TE Ranch in Cody, Wyo., in the early 20th century from Buffalo Bill Cody. “There was a lot of pressure. We did research for one year, and they (Rhoads) did everything they promised,” stated the individual who served as power of attorney working for the estate. Friday’s session included the ephemera from the Dorrance and Groves family, with a photo album from the TE Ranch selling to the Buffalo Bill Museum, located in Cody, Wyo., for $4,235. Tagging along was a grouping of more photos from Cody that branded $3,327. The jewelry from the Groves estate soared beyond their modest estimates. A vintage 1905 2-carat platinum diamond ring brought $17,545, while a J.E. Caldwell platinum diamond bracelet sold for $7,080. A formal portrait painting
by James Peale of Anthony Groves brought $11,800. Regular readers know that I often harp on what I see as the changing world of retail and how the antiques trade needs to adapt to the new norms of 2013. Too often I hear the comment that once the economic recovery is in place, things will be just like they were before 2008. There is nothing further from the truth! The world has changed, spending patterns have changed, and more importantly, the demographic of collectors has totally changed. A recent news story caught my eye. It noted that for the first time in decades, baby boomers are NOT the big spenders in our economy. That privilege has now fallen to Gen X (those born in the early to mid 1960s through
of Truth.” It is worth reading, as it really outlines the new changes in consumerism. Central to that is the widespread use of the Internet to price-shop before buying anything. How does this work? Let me give you an example. About a month ago, a board member of mine called me while on vacation about a piece of pottery he spotted in a shop. He liked it, but he wanted to know about the price. I whipped out my iPhone and was able to find three examples currently for sale online at half the price of what he saw. He passed on the pot, and the dealer who had it lost the sale. The board member was a boomer and I am a Gen X. My iPhone is the tool of choice to check pricing on things everywhere and anywhere. I use it for tires and restaurants and to price-check antiques. That is the new

the 1980s), who are outspending the Boomers everywhere! Why? Well, there are several reasons. First is that boomers are retiring or thinking about retiring in record numbers. The crisis of 2008 has made them much more concerned about their savings, and so they are not spending at the rate they once did. Similarly, many of the boomers are seeing adult children moving back home, and again they have a concern about loss of income. All of this is adding up to a decline in spending at every level. So the engine that drove the antiques trade for decades, the baby boomer with disposable income, is no longer pulling the train. I am sure readers will say that I am exaggerating, but the national data supports this conclusion. The other interesting report to look at is a Google report that you can find online, titled “Zero Moment

what I’m calling ‘My Pedigreed Adventure’ has been rewarding in more ways than one, Thompson said. “Heritage Auctions has consistently displayed unvarying kindness and knowledge. Its experts permitted me to profit from my hobby without ever treating my treasures solely in terms of their market value. Bidders kept laser focus on additional high-grade examples of key books, as a copy of Detective Comics #33, CGC VF 8.0, realized $68,712, and a copy of Strange Tales #110, CGC NM+ 9.6, marking the first appearance of Doctor Strange, was pursued by 15 bidders to end at $44,812. Another famous first, Amazing Fantasy #15, CGC FN/VF 7.0, presenting the origin and first appearance of Spider-Man, quickly sold for $33,460. Among the top lots of a diverse selection of original comic art is Weird Science #15, with art by Wally Wood, from 1952, which sold for $71,700 following interest from 18 bidders. My phone bidders were ecstatic with their wins. I can’t wait to see how her books perform in February. Leading the collection was The Avengers #1, CGC NM 9.4, that sold for $89,625. The Thompson’s original cover art for Conan the Barbarian #4 saw intense action by 21 bidders before selling via the Internet for $87,235. The top lot in Swann Galleries’ annual auction of Rare & Important Travel Posters on Oct. 18 was a scarce image by an unknown artist celebrating the Wright Brothers. Reading “The Nation, State and City Welcome the Worlds Greatest Aviators,” and the date “1909,” which advertised an event in the Wright Brothers’ hometown of Dayton, Ohio, the poster sold for a record $35,000. Other early aviation posters of note were Charles Rambert’s Grande Semaine d’Aviation / Rouen, 1910, at $8,750, and Handley Page Transport, Ltd., circa 1920, selling for $7,250. Advertisements for glamorous ocean liners included A.M. Cassandre’s majestic Art Deco image for L’Atlantique, 1931, which was $23,750; Hubert Herkomer’s romantic night-time depiction of the Normandie / French Line, 1939, $22,500; and Frank Newbould’s To Europe via America / The “Big Ship” Route, circa 1920, sold for $9,375. The poster captures the bustle of New York Harbor teaming with tugboats beneath the splendor of some of the world’s most famous buildings. A pair of winter resort posters by Roger Broders performed well: Les Sports d’Hiver / A St. Pierre de Chartreuse, a complex

Rutz Clovis Point Sets World Auction Record At Morphy’s, Sells To Texas Collector For $276,000 Debut Prehistoric American Artifact And Arrowhead Auction Chalks Up $544,800 A buzz filled the room at Morphy’s Nov. 9 auction after the hammer fell on Lot 57, a 9-3/4-inch sea-green obsidian artifact known as the Rutz Clovis point. The star of Morphy’s 159-lot Prehistoric American Artifact and Arrowhead debut auction, the point discovered on a mountain in Washington state in the early 1950s is
bidder who had an image of it tattooed on his calf!” said an amused John Mark Clark, who heads Morphy’s Prehistoric American Artifact and Arrowhead department. “Unfortunately for him, he’ll have to be satisfied with the tattoo, because he wasn’t the winning bidder.” With the sale of the Rutz Clovis, Morphy’s has established what experts believe is a worldrecord price for a North American flaked stone artifact at auction.
The star of the auction was the Rutz Clovis Point, sea green obsidian, 9 3/4 inches, discovered by Les Ira Kreis in the early 1950s in a wheat field on Badger Mountain near the community of Badger Creek Springs, Wash. It sold for $276,000 to a collector in Texas. Morphy Auctions image.
known to collectors far and wide as one of the great treasures of its type. Entered with a $200,000-$400,000 estimate, the Rutz Clovis did not disappoint, selling to a Texas collector for $276,000. All prices quoted are inclusive of Morphy’s 20 percent buyer’s premium. “How famous is the Rutz Clovis point? Ask the floor

Also attracting an impressive price was the lot of 20 points from the grouping known as the Motley Cache, of Todd County, Ky. They sold for $28,800. “Top lots in the sale attracted fantastic prices, and many collectors around the country were paying close attention,” said Morphy Auctions CEO Dan Morphy. “There was a lot of positive feedback after the sale, and we had sev-

New Exhibit At The Petersen Automotive Museum Is Titled
“License Plates: Unlocking The Code” In 1928, Massachusetts had one of the worst fishing seasons the state had ever seen. In that same year, a new license plate design included a fish symbol, which pointed away from the state’s abbreviation, “Mass.” Superstitious residents blamed the fish symbol, and after the DMV employee responsible was fired and the design updated with the fish pointing toward the word “Mass.,” the fishing industry again saw prosperous years. This is one example of the many license plate stories explored in the new exhibit, “License Plates: Unlocking the Code,” running until Sunday, March 30, 2014, at the Petersen Automotive Museum, the anchor of Los Angeles’ Miracle Mile, located at 6060 Wilshire Boulevard (at Fairfax) in Los Angeles, Calif.
keting, and superstitions found all over the world. Some of the stories and facts include the following. The earliest automobiles were given numbers, and it was up to the owner to figure out a way to display them on the vehicle. Metal or wooden numbers affixed to a piece of leather was common in the early 1900s.
Prior to 1972, every province of Argentina had its own unique plate design. A license plate from the Neuguen region features an
intricate waterfall design, and all plates were hand-painted. The Petersen’s chief curator, Leslie Kendall, worked with three major license plate collectors including respected license plate historian, Jeff Minard, to create this exhibit. “It was a pleasure to help create this exhibit,” said Minard. “There really is educational value to each plate in this display, and at the same time, these unique pieces are displayed as art for everyone to enjoy.” Other current exhibits at the Petersen include “Pickups: The Art of Utility,” “Fins: Form Without Function,” and “The
Hollywood Gallery: Cars of Film and Television.” The museum is also offering tours of the underground vault storage area that houses the vehicles not currently on display, including many of the collection’s “crown jewels,” like the Round Door
Rolls-Royce, a rare Jaguar XKSS formerly owned by Steve McQueen, and a 1939 Bugatti, given to the Shah of Iran as a wedding present. For more information about upcoming events at the museum or for more information, visit www.Petersen.org.

Denver Art Museum Announces Exhibition Chronicling The American West In Bronze, 1850-1925 The Denver Art Museum (DAM) will host the exhibition titled “The American West in Bronze, 1850–1925,” from May 11 to Aug. 31, 2014. At the turn of the 20th century, artistic representations of American Indians, cowboys, cavalry, pioneers, prospectors, and animals of the plains and the mountains served as visual metaphors for the Old West. Through 72 bronze sculptures by 28 artists, “The American West in Bronze” explores the aesthetic and cultural impulses behind the creation of statuettes with American Western themes popular with audiences then and now. The
exhibition premieres at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City on Wednesday, Dec. 18. It closes at the MET on April 13, 2014. “The allure of the American West is undeniable,” said Christoph Heinrich, the Frederick and Jan Mayer director of the Denver Art Museum. “In the last three years alone, thanks to the endowment of the Petrie Institute of Western American Art and the donation of the Roath Collection, the Denver Art Museum has risen to the position of an international leader in the field of Western American art. We are proud to partner with The Metropolitan Museum of Art to illuminate this fascinating time period.” From elegiac portrayals of dignified Indians to rough-and-tumble scenes of rowdy cowboys and tributes to the stalwart pioneers who settled the lands west of the Mississippi, “The American West in Bronze”
explores themes of the American West brought to life in enduringly popular sculptures. “The western bronze statuette was eagerly collected by the urban populace at the turn of the 20th century,” said Thomas Smith, director of the Petrie Institute of Western American Art at the DAM and co-curator of the exhibi-
tion. “Remarkably, there has never been a full-scale exhibition on this rich and complex topic. A century later, no segment of American sculpture remains more appreciated by the public,” he added. The artists featured in the exhibition range from those internationally recognized for their work in bronze, such as Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell, to artists who infrequently pursued Western subjects, such as Frederick William MacMonnies and Paul Manship. Chinese Carved Coral Guan Yin Sculpture Sells For $66,550 At Elite Decorative Arts Auction A Chinese hand-carved red coral sculpture of four Guan Yin (Buddhist deities of mercy and compassion) from the Qing Dynasty, and a Chinese hand-carved red coral group figure depicting two Guan Yin with flowers throughout, each knocked down for $66,550 to share top lot honors on Nov. 2 at Elite Decorative Arts’ auction in
Florida. The sale, featuring 370 lots (300 of which met or exceeded their reserves) of Chinese works, fine decorative arts, and fine artworks, was held in the firm’s Boynton Beach gallery, located at 1034 Gateway Boulevard. About 80 people attended the event live, and another 650 bid online, via LiveAuctioneers.com and Artfact.com. More than 1,000 Internet bids were placed in the auction, which attracted worldwide interest. All eight phone lines were kept busy as well. By the time the final hammer came down, the sale had grossed $735,000. “It was one of our better auctions,” said Scott Cieckiewicz of Elite Decorative Arts. Rich Penn Auctions’ Three Day Collector Feast Rich Penn’s three day Des Moines, Iowa, collector feast auction event on Nov. 1, 2, and 3 delivered record attendance. “We had well over 3,000 online bidders from over 40 countries, and another 500 in-house and absentee. They all came with voracious appetites for quality and the rare pieces,” stated Penn. According to one attendee, Penn’s auction team moved over two thousand lots across the block “like a well oiled machine.” Selling something every 50 seconds kept the crowd on their toes from start to finish. Ursinus College Announces Appointment Of New Curator Of Exhibitions At The Philip And Muriel Berman Museum Of Art Ursinus College recently announced the appointment of Ginny Kollak as the new Curator of Exhibitions at The Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art. The Curator of Exhibitions is a new position at the Berman Museum and was established by director Charlie Stainback. Prior to joining the Berman Museum, Ms. Kollak worked as an independent curator, writer, and freelance editor, and in 2011 she participated in the Young Curators’ Residency Program at the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in Turin, Italy. At the Fondazione she co-organized the exhibition “Vedere un oggetto, vedere la luce” (To see an object, to see the light), which featured contemporary works by 17 Italian artists displayed with natural specimens and antique scientific instruments. Ms. Kollak served from 2004 to 2008 as a curatorial assistant at the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. She holds a B.A. in Art History and English from Williams College, and a M.A. from the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College. Jill Marsteller, senior vice president for Institutional Advancement at Ursinus College, said of the appointment, “We were thrilled to receive a tremendous response from highly qualified individuals throughout the U.S. for this new curatorial position. While it was not easy to make a selection from such a strong pool of talented individuals, Ginny brings experience in a college art museum setting, a strong academic background, and an understanding of the role the visual arts can play in teaching and learning that make her the perfect fit for the Berman Museum.” “I am delighted that Ginny will be joining the staff at the museum. In addition to her impressive curatorial and scholarly credentials, she brings a wealth of practical knowledge including experience in the logistics of exhibition planning and execution and in organizing educational initiatives. Equally important, she has an irrepressible spirit of intellectual play and invention that I believe are central
to engaging students, and the general public, with the arts,” stated Stainback. The appointment of Ginny Kollak is the latest of a series of new initiatives being led by Stainback, who joined the Berman Museum as director in April of 2013. Stainback is redefining the role of the arts on the Ursinus campus, making the museum a hub for the exchange of ideas between students and faculty, fostering new ideas and unexpected connections between objects, and enriching the educational experience of students across fields of study. On October 17, 2013, Ursinus announced the gift of more than 1,300 works of art to the Berman Museum. The diverse collection includes paintings, sculpture, and prints by artists such as Harry Bertoia, William Glackens, Chaim Gross, and James and Jean Pierre Vasarely, as well as works on paper by George Bellows, Paul Cézanne, Edgar Degas, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso, John Sloan, James Whistler, and a wide range of other artists. The collection reflects the passion for collecting of the late Philip and Muriel Berman, who established The Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art in 1989. Nancy Berman, president of the Berman Foundation and daughter of Philip and Muriel, gave the collection to Ursinus College in honor of her parents. A special exhibition honoring the gift, “A to Z: Highlighting the Berman Collection” will be on view through January 12, 2014. The exhibition was organized by Stainback, Ursinus Professor of Art History Matt Shoaf, and Ursinus students, whose majors range from psychology to international relations. “A to Z “speaks to the breadth and depth of the collection as both an exhibition vehicle and a teaching resource. The Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and from noon to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The Museum is closed Mondays and college holidays. Admission is free. It is located at 601 E. Main Street in Collegeville, Pa.
