FRIDAY DECEMBER 25, 2015 • VOL. 46, NO. 52
The Harry Hartman Estate Sale: Session Three
A stash of rare movie posters discovered under a linoleum floor in York County, Pa., sold for a combined $219,000 in Heritage Auctions’ Vintage Poster Auction on Nov. 21 and 22 in Dallas, Texas. The $2+ million auction offered seldom seen rarities from Hollywood’s golden age of film and poster art. Collectors especially eyed the grouping of never-before-seen
posters hidden away for more than 60 years. Owner Robert Basta said the trove will fund his retirement nest egg. “You always hear about these stories, and I never believed it would happen to our family,” Basta said following the auction. “We are beyond thrilled with the results. We

FBI Recovered All Six Stolen N.C. Wyeth Paintings Six historically significant paintings by American painter and illustrator N.C. Wyeth were recently secured and reunited after being stolen more than two years ago in what the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) calls one of the largest property thefts in Maine’s history. The recovered artworks are now returned to their home state and are on view at the Portland Museum of Art (PMA) through Sunday, Jan. 3, 2016. The exhibition, “The Great N.C. Wyeth Caper: Paintings by America’s Storyteller,” features six artworks that were the focus of the state’s largest art heist and an FBI criminal investigation. After the paintings were taken from a private collector’s home in Portland, Maine, four were removed from their frames and endured a perilous cross-country

This stamped “W Smith, Womelsdorf” redware plate with slip decoration sold to an agent bidding on behalf of a collector, who was a major buyer at all three Hartman estate sales. It brought $2,714.

The initials appeared to have been primitively scratched and filled with paint pigments of a gray-silver color to appear like sulphur. The piece had some minor losses and the top had been reinforced with screws. A small oval walnut top trestle base table in old red paint sold for $1,298. It was missing a drawer that hung on the underside of the top and the drawer runner. It was simply cataloged as “Pennsylvania.” The table was very likely from the Ephrata Cloister in northern Lancaster County. It had been on exhibit at the Philadelphia Show’s 1976 exhibit titled “A Palette of Pennsylvania Folk Art” and once belonged to the Ephrata Church of the Brethren. The church sold a number of their belongings at a public sale in the 1970s. The table sold for $6,900 on April 3, 1995, at the Mr. and Mrs. Richard Flanders Smith sale held by Christie’s.

A softwood paint-decorated shrank from Lancaster County, Pa., circa 1780, sold for $31,860 late in the sale. It was an item with a widely known price history, since Hartman had bought it recently on April 25, 2014, at a Pook & Pook sale. He paid $102,000. Hartman had the shrank in his dining room when he first owned it during the days when he lived in Marietta’s White Swan Tavern. The historic Lancaster County town, like many places situated along the Susquehanna River, was hit hard by the flood Agnes in 1972, and soon after, Hartman moved into another residence in the town. Collector Anecdotes And Antics
A Lesson In Speculation: An Update On Nintendo Amiibo In late November 2 0 1 4 , Nintendo introduced a line of collectible figurines designed to work with specific software created for its line of home and portable video game systems. The figurines were based off of popular Nintendo characters that graced some of the company’s most popular video game franchises. The toy line was called Amiibo, and each collectible figurine contained an electronic chip in the base of the figure that allowed it to interact with software that was specially programmed for it. The company released the first 12 figures with little fanfare and a cost of about $13 each. It should be noted that this wasn’t the first time video gamers had been exposed to toys that worked with interactive entertainment. Activision Blizzard released a line of electronic enabled figures called Skylanders that have been on the market for years. What made Amiibo especially attractive to collectors and hardcore gamers was the fact that this was the first time Nintendo was producing its own line of toys based on some of the company’s most beloved characters.
By the time the December 2014 holiday shopping season had come to a close, it was clear that Amiibo would be an ongoing and ever expanding toy line and that certain characters would be much harder to find in retail stores than others. Out of the first release of 12 characters, three figures in particular became increasingly hard to find: the Wii Fit Trainer, the Villager, and Marth, a popular character from the Fire Emblem video game series. By the time the second and third wave of releases hit store shelves in late spring and early summer of 2015, respectively, mass hysteria had already overtaken the Amiibo collectors’ market, leaving Nintendo in a position that any manufacturer would envy. With growing frustration among diehard fans and the fact that Nintendo started to release store exclusive figurines in limited quantities, prices on the secondary market for some of the hardest-to-find figures rose exponentially. Nintendo faced stern criticism from its most loyal fans and scorn from parents who had no choice but to pay the increasing secondary market prices to ensure they could obtain some of the hardest-to-find characters. By mid-summer of 2015, Nintendo was facing increasing scrutiny from hardcore collectors and gamers. With the 2015 holiday shopping season quickly approaching, the company
announced plans to increase production on some of the hardest-to-find Amiibo characters. Due to heavy hoarding and speculation being reported across the board, resellers had a monopoly on some of the most popular characters. What once was a $13 toy figurine was now being sold as a $50 collector’s item with the word “rare” attached to the description. Nintendo ensured fans that supply would not be an ongoing issue while stores continued to sell out of all available stock on some of the most sought-after figurines within minutes of being offered online. Nintendo faced mass criticism. Hoarding started to spread to other retailer exclusives being offered by the company. From special collector edition games and consoles to limited edition controllers, retailers were reporting increased sales and mass hysteria in regards to almost all the company’s most popular products. Still, Nintendo vowed to ramp up production to appease its most dedicated fans. Then it happened. By late September 2015, retailers reported having ample supplies of newly minted Amiibo. These included a lot of the most popular and hardest-to-find figurines. By October 2015, most of the highly sought-after Amiibo were readily available at most retail locations for their original retail price of $13. This left a lot
of collectors upset at Nintendo because a lot of these diehard fans paid upward of $50 to obtain some figurines from secondary resellers. Worse yet, resellers and hoarders were also upset because they thought they were holding collectibles that had a lot of value on the secondary market. Now as we enter the 2015 holiday shopping season, most Amiibo are in ample supply, leaving only some of the retailer exclusives as being hard to find. Speculation among diehard fans and resellers has leveled off. Threads on Internet forums about the so called investment potential of Amiibo are now almost nonexistent. Nintendo has promised to learn from this debacle and ensure greater
supplies of the figurines moving forward. Even current store exclusives have become much easier to find, with many stores reporting higher than usual inventory levels of most characters. Still, some of the early releases that were exclusive to certain retailers remain almost impossible to find. The limited Wal-Mart exclusive gold colored Mario release still hovers around $50-plus on the secondary market and has yet to receive a re-release. So do a lot of the more eccentric characters that Nintendo never bothered to reproduce as of yet. Speculators, investors, and hoarders can learn a lot from this lesson. During the frenzy, I got into a lot of heated discussions centering around my views on these toy figurines.
Regular readers of this column know that I never recommend a collector paying a premium for any item still in mass production. Business insiders have written numerous articles on the subject of Nintendo and its handling of the Amiibo phenomenon. Almost all the articles I read centered around how Nintendo would be crazy not to reproduce the toys and leave that much money on the table while demand remained at all-time highs. Will these same speculators learn their lesson? History says no. Still if you happen to see a gold colored Mario Amiibo on the shelf at your local Wal-Mart, my advice would be to buy it … for $13. Thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoy a happy and healthy holiday season!

feel truly blessed.” The stash was discovered when Basta’s sons, Bob and Dylan, removed a dated linoleum floor during a renovation project at their home. Underneath were the posters. “The discovery uncovered the only-known surviving examples of five rare posters, making them true pieces of Hollywood history,” said Grey Smith, director of vintage posters at Heritage. One-of-a-kind posters saw intense bidder interest as a Style D one-sheet poster for “Tarzan the Ape Man” (MGM, 1932) sold for $83,650; the only known one-sheet poster for “Any Old Port,” a 1932 MGM short starring the comedy duo Laurel and Hardy, sold for $8,962; and the only known one-sheet poster for Clark Gable’s first starring role in “Sporting Blood” (MGM, 1931) sold for $2,987. The stash also held a movie poster for MGM’s 1932 bad-girl classic “Red Headed Woman,” which sold for $77,675, and a one-sheet poster for “Doctor X” (First National, 1932), which sold for $23,900. “Collectors and historians didn’t know some of these posters existed before this discovery,” said Smith. “Rare finds are still out there, and you never know when a missing piece of history will be filed in.” The auction also fetched top prices for rare, pre-war releases for classics such as an Italian two-foglio poster for “Casablanca” (Warner Brothers, 1948), which sold for $95,600, and a window card for “Frankenstein” (Universal, 1931), which sold for $89,625. A Swedish oversized poster for “King Kong” (RKO, 1933) brought $31,070. A one-sheet for the 1927 Universal short “Oswald the Lucky Rabbit in Great Guns!,” a

(The English would also began molding chocolate in invent the process of solidify- the 19th century. ing chocolate.) Meanwhile, however, drinking chocolate was the most common way to consume it and, as one would assume, with its associations with wealth and social standing, the drinking of chocolate (and coffee) required specialized pots, sets and cups. While the terms are now muddled, chocolate pots, coffeepots and teapots were distinctly different forms that were easily identified in the period. Teapots are easiest; they are short
pots are also often distinguished by their odd handles. Unlike the loop handle on a coffeepot, chocolate pots frequently have turned handles sticking straight out of the side of the pots. Less commonly observed, early chocolate pots often had a hinged or removable finial, sometimes attached by chain, to allow for the insertion of a stirrer. While eating chocolate has only grown in popularity, drinking chocolate never achieved the staying power of drinking coffee, due in large part to how much more complicated the production of processing cocoa beans is versus that of processing coffee beans. Drinking chocolate dropped out of fashion by the mid-18th century to be replaced nearly 100 years later by the use of cocoa powder to make something closer to the hot cocoa This chocolate pot we know today. from the Rochester (N.Y.) Cocoa beans made the trip to Seville, Spain, from Mexico in 1585, but that would have been unrecognizable to us, as it was not the cocoa powder we use (stripped of the rich cocoa butter), but something more akin to melting a chocolate bar and thinning it with cream. And then adding things like anise and chiles! Sugar, simply put, was a mark of prosperity and thus social standing. It took roughly another 100 years, but by the end of the 1700s, chocolate had become something that would be at least a little more familiar to modern consumers. The processes of grinding the beans and integrating milk and sugar had been refined, but making chocolate was still an ordeal: the beans, which first had to be roasted and shelled, were crushed and then ground on a This chocolate pot made by Anna hot stone. Coffeepots are more slender and taller, with elongated, often arching, spouts. Chocolate pots are also taller than teapots, but their spout is typically shorter, with the opening often just below the rim. Another difference between chocolate pots and coffeepots can be observed inside the pot: filters. A coffeepot has a screen-like filter over the base of the spout to catch grounds, while a chocolate pot does not. Chocolate

Heist Headlines Selkirk’s First High-Quality Eclectic Auction The portrait of the majestic imported German coach stallion, “Heist,” headlined the first Eclectic Auction held by Selkirk Auctioneers and Appraisers in the St. Louis, Mo., market. The sale took place Saturday, Nov. 7. In a classic “road show” moment that prompted spontaneous applause from the full house, the 1902 oil painting by renowned early 20thcentury painter J. F. Stephens sold for $6,120. Similar examples have been owned by folk art collectors Frank and Barbara Pollack, and interest in the signed and dated painting was enhanced by the accompanying REA’s Pocket Stallion Service Book and related legal documents. “Moments like these represent the experience that all auctioneers work hard to create in the gallery,” said Jeff Jeffers, CEO and principal auc-
tioneer. “Yet, it is the combination of the story of the item, the interaction of sellers and bidders, and engagement of the audience that make the magic. We’re thrilled and proud to be the catalyst.” With a full house of bidders, plus absentee and remote bidders on the phone and via the Internet, the eclectic auction was the epitome of the term’s definition: selecting what appears to be best in various methods or styles. The high-quality eclectic auction concept, pioneered and trademarked by Garth’s, offers auction lots for a variety of buyers with the intention of making the auction the best in the region. With the focus on objects 1850 to present and price points and materials with primary appeal to regional bidders, Selkirk’s has successfully introduced this model to a new market. Sought after 20th-century furniture by design pioneer T.H. Robsjohn-Gibbings attracted bidders nationwide, with selling prices of $2,760 for the walnut frame strap

By contrast, highly unique items representing Americana were also popular. Visitors admired the intricacy of the rare, three-and-a-half-foot stern wheel steamboat model by A. C. New Director’s Choice Volume Caps Off Strong Year For The Frick
Bluebonnet Landscape Sells For $437,000 A newly discovered oil painting, “Texas Landscape with Bluebonnets” by Julian Onderdonk, sold for $437,000 to become the second-mostvaluable work ever offered by the artist in Heritage Auctions’ Texas Art Auction held Nov. 7 in Dallas, Texas. The auction marked the first time that the painting was seen in color after it spent the last 40 years in a private collection. “Texas Landscape with Bluebonnets” is the second record-setting Onderdonk Heritage has brought to auction,” said Atlee Phillips, director of Texas art at Heritage. “We now have the distinction of offering the top two most valuable works. We can hardly wait to start work on our next auction on May 21,
2016.” Heritage Auctions set a world record for the most valuable Onderdonk canvas ever offered at public auction in November 2013. “Texas Landscape with Bluebonnets” was last published in black and white in “A Family of Texas Painters” by scholar Cecilia Steinfeldt in 1975. Additional classic landscapes by Onderdonk placed among the top lots, as “Bluebonnets in the Misty Morning,” from 1917, sold for $143,000, and “Bluebonnets in Spring” ended at $75,000. A rare portrait by Onderdonk of his sister, Eleanor, sold for $21,250, and a newlydiscovered work produced during his stint in New York City, “Stone Bridge in Winter, Central Park,” sold for $21,250.
Artworks by two of Texas’ most respected landscape artists handily surpassed pre-auction estimates, as Robert William Wood’s “Texas Spring” sold for $27,500 against a $15,000 estimate, and “Morning in the Hill Country” by Porfirio Salinas sold for $23,125, also against a “Texas Landscape with Bluebonnets” by Julian $15,000 estimate. Onderdonk sold for $437,000. Much of the auction was composed of fresh- after it was obtained directly to-market finds, such as by the artist and descended in “Porch,” 1950, by William Lewis the family of the owner, and Lester, which sold for $16,250, “Sun-Up,” 1984, by Billy going to a private Houston, Hassell, sold for $11,250 Texas, collection. The painting against a $5,000 estimate. For further information, “Present Personas,” 1952, by Bill Bomar, sold for $16,250 visit www.HA.com.

Barnebys.com Offers Shopping For Antiques And Collectibles Holiday shopping can be an easy, pleasant experience through Barnebys.com, a free one-stop website that features more than 400,000 items from 1,000-plus auction houses worldwide. Instead of bouncing from auction site to auction site, which can be a frustrating and time-consuming exercise, bidders and buyers may simply visit Barnebys.com. There, they can enter the keyword that will lead them to their holiday treasure, be it a piece of fine art, an antique or collectible, or maybe not a gift at all, like items needed to set a festive holiday table. All of the keyword matches have been aggregated into a convenient, one-stop shopping site. “We tell people, you’re already digital, so take your search global,” said Pontus Silfverstolpe, Barnebys’ cofounder and director of content. “The holidays are the perfect time to give Barnebys a try, to see how easy it is to navigate and discover how quickly one can find a great gift that was proving so elusive before. It’s free, it’s simple, and it brings fabulous results.” Barnebys was launched in 2011 by Silfverstolpe and Christopher Barnekow, both businessmen and entrepreneurs in Sweden. It was Barnekow who came up with
the idea after going online to research a particular still-life painting. “It was extremely frustrating, just getting tossed from one site to the next,” he said, “plus it was time-consuming. Finally, I just gave up.” An epiphany came when he asked himself, “Why isn’t there a tool or a centralized search engine that can incorporate the lots from many auction houses?” As a seasoned expert in e-commerce in online marketing, Barnekow decided to create such a tool himself, but he needed to partner with someone who was experienced in the auction, fine art and antiques industries. Silfverstolpe was a perfect fit. Today, Barnebys has offices in Scandinavia, the UK, France, Germany, Spain and the United States. Further international expansion is planned for 2016. “When people started their Christmas shopping this year, we noticed a valuation shift,” Barnekow said. “Now, people are willing to buy a ring for a loved one at auction instead of from a high-end retailer. This applies to other items, too, from furniture to Louis Vuitton handbags to affordable china for your mother-in-law.” A recent trip to Barnebys revealed the following
items for sale, any one of which would make a fine gift: a signed 1938 lithograph on Arches paper, framed, by Pablo Picasso (RoGallery.com); a pair of natural, .10-carat diamond solitaire stud earrings set in 14carat white gold (US Jewelry Liquidation); a silver dress ring set with various colored stones (Dickins Auctioneers); and a vintage brown leather Speedy handbag by Louis Vuitton, with multiple carrier gates (Catawiki). Also on the site was a heart-shape silver charm saying “Return to Tiffany” suspended from a belcher-link bracelet chain with lobsterclaw clasp (Fellows); a vintage men’s Victorinox Swiss Army Maverick quartz wristwatch (Govberg); two bottles of 1978 Saint-Emilion Chateau Saint Pey red Bordeaux wine (iDealWine); an American Flyer post-World War II Blue Stitcher train (Apple Tree Auction Center); and a bottle of 1955 Perrier-Jouet Champagne Brut (Auctionata). Barnebys was created with consumers in mind, with simplicity being the operative word. Barnekow and Silfverstolpe had a shared vision of a single, easy-to-use tool to centralize, aggregate and navigate the auction
market. “As savvy as people are with regard to computers and the Internet, many still find it daunting, as we once did, to search for and find a great item,” Silfverstolpe said. With an average of 20 new auction house sign-ups to the Barnebys platform each month, things are only going to get easier for the bidders and buyers on the hunt for that perfect gift to find what they’re looking for. Once stateside auction houses come aboard, Americans will no doubt warm to the Barnebys concept just as Europeans did. Already, ground has been staked at the high end, as top-tier auction houses such as Sotheby’s, Christie’s, Paddle 8, Phillips and Heritage have signed on. Barnebys generates its revenue from auction houses, on a pay-per-click basis. Listings on Barnebys are organized under item categories, such as fine art, furniture, jewelry, silver and gold, and so forth. Bidders are presented with examples of what
they wish to buy in the foreground; the auction house selling the item is secondary. “It’s all about the consumer,” said Barnekow, “making sure the search is simple, the process is smooth and the item is found.” Other Barnebys features make the site unique. One is a prices-realized feature, a free service that gives precise data about an item’s sale history. By showing how much an item has sold for in the past, as well as how similar objects have performed, Barnebys helps sellers to value items realistically. Hammer prices realized on more than 10 million previously auctioned lots are revealed. Another key feature is Barnebys’ free-to-use valuation service, one that gives users access to established
antiques experts who can offer estimates and advice to potential sellers. Users who seek an evaluation can go to barnebys.com, input information about their objects and upload images. The data is then sent to several auction houses, where experts evaluate the items. “We’ve thought of just about everything, really,” said Barnekow. “All that’s left is for people to discover us and see how easy we are to use. Holiday shopping would be a great place to start, or experiment, and we’re confident once the Barnebys habit is established, it will be very hard to resist. And for anyone who misses their chance in December, there’s always Valentine’s Day.” To learn more, visit www.Barnebys.com.

Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates’ Diverse Americana Auction Deemed A Success signs of vigor in what is an unpredictable market. Books and manuscripts were two such categories that exhibited strength. With a large portion of the sale’s selection deaccessioned from a Virginia institution, the material included some rare books. Leading the way was a first edition of “Bleak House” (Lot 1218) by Charles Dickens. Signed and inscribed by the author and presented to his close friend and colleague, Frank Stone, the unique volume brought $16,100. Another rare and unusual offering in the auction, a fine pair of 19th-century Limoges, France, figural vases (Lot 386)
depicting characters from Harriet Beecher Stowe’s “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” garnered a significant amount of presale interest. Deaccessioned from the Strong Museum in Rochester, N.Y., the elaborate pair sold for $7,475 to a Virginia institution. One noteworthy example of folk art from this sale was a selection of circa 1915 Virginia prison art inlaid objects (Lot 515) made by Jeremiah Sidna Allen, a prominent figure associated with the 1912 Hillsville courtroom tragedy in Hillsville, Va. Another important consignment in the auction consisted of a group of fine Southern needlework samplers, all from a Tennessee private collection. In a sign of market strength, Southern needlework remains popular with collectors, and the sale included a number of fine specimens from Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky that produced strong results. The top example (Lot 435), associated with a documented school of similar works, was executed in 1826 by Lennah Griffey in a western Virginia community that came to be incorporated as Morgantown in 1838. She married Charles Madera in Monongalia County, Va. (now West Virginia), in 1831, and the couple migrated to the Iowa Territory in 1837, where she died shortly after arriving. The sampler, noteworthy for its large and impressive visual format, graphics, fine condition, and its family history, sold for $21,850. The buyer was a West Virginia private collector. Other areas of the sale produced positive results as well, demonstrating some

The Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates Americana and Fine Antiques Auction on Nov. 14 was a success by all accounts and generated strong prices in virtually every category. With material from over 100 consignors, the auction represented the largest offering of high quality material Evans & Associates has ever put to market in a single sale. Bidding was intense throughout the long day, with over 3,000 registered bidders participating, and incorporated buyers from across the country and as far afield as Russia, France, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. The sale’s top lot was a rare 1776 map of New York City by John Montresor, a British surveyor who worked in secret to complete the project. This iconic depiction of New York City (Lot 397) was executed on the eve of the Revolution and had been commissioned by British commanding General Thomas Gage in anticipation of increased hostilities in the colonies and the city in particular. The map brought $23,000, selling to a North Carolina private collector.

journey to a pawn shop in Beverly Hills, Calif., where they were identified and returned to authorities in December 2014. The remaining two paintings were recently recovered in the Greater Boston area, still in their original frames. The FBI recovered the two remaining paintings in October, when a third party surrendered them to retired FBI agent Jim Siracusa. Both paintings were found in good condition. The criminal investigation into the robbery was initiated in June 2013 after the Portland Police Department requested the FBI’s assistance in investigating the theft of the six N.C. Wyeth paintings. In November 2014, after a lengthy investigation, the FBI in Portland requested assistance from the FBI in Los Angeles after it obtained information indicating the stolen paintings had been transported to that area. In December, the FBI’s Los Angeles Division recovered four of the paint-
ings at a pawn shop in Beverly Hills. To date, three individuals, Lawrence Estrella, Oscar Leroy Roberts, and Dean Coroniti, have been charged in connection with this investigation. Estrella, 65, of Worcester, Mass., pleaded guilty to Interstate Transportation of Stolen Property in February. He was sentenced in the United States District Court in Portland, Maine, to 92 months in prison to be followed by three years of supervised release. According to court records, Estrella transported four of the six stolen paintings to California in an effort to sell them. Law enforcement officers in California located his vehicle in the parking lot of a hotel in North Hollywood. Estrella’s room at the hotel was searched, and a firearm was located, but no paintings were found. Roberts, 37, of North Hollywood, Calif., who used the stolen paintings to secure a loan from the Beverly Hills pawn shop, pleaded guilty in
