Big Eyes And Diamonds Shine At Worth Auctions

$10 Million Comics And Comic Art Auction Smashes Records Golden/Silver Age And Underground Comix Reset The Market Original Underground Comix art and key comic books from the Golden Age and Silver Age helped push the total value of Heritage Auctions’ Comics and Comic Art Auction on Nov. 17, 18, and 19, held in Dallas, Texas, to nearly $10 million. This was the second-highest total ever for a comic auction. The #1 Comics auction record ($10,389,821) was set by Heritage in July 2012. “This auction was very gratifying to us at Heritage Auctions, because so many of the lots surpassed our pre-auction estimates,” said Heritage director of operations for comics and comic art Barry Sandoval. “For example, we certainly thought the Pep Comics run would sell for multiples of the Price Guide value, but we weren’t expecting some to sell for as much as 12 times the Guide value.” The top lot was a rare, unrestored copy of Superman #1 (DC, 1939) CGC VG+ 4.5 CGC, which sold for $358,500. Although an estimated 1,000,000 copies were printed in 1939, very few are known to have survived in this grade or better. This issue is ranked third on Overstreet’s Top 100 Golden Age Comics list. One of the auction’s highlights was a 9.6 CGC NM+ issue of The

An iconic “Big Eyes” painting by Margaret D. H. Keane offered at Worth Auctions on Nov. 27 fetched over $12,500. The price marks the artist’s second-highest price on record at auction. Keane’s distinctive portraits of waiflike children became phenomenally popular during the 1960s, although all of the fame and fortune went to her husband, Walter, who signed his name to her paintings and passed them off as his own. In 2014, Amy Adams and Christoph Waltz starred in the film “Big Eyes,” an award-winning biopic that chronicled the couple’s troubled relationship and Margaret’s eventual triumph in a dramatic courtroom paint-off. Catwoman and the Joker, are two of the reasons for the issue’s appearance on Overstreet’s list of Top 100 Golden Age Comics. This issue features a retelling of Batman’s origin and a classic cover by Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson. This particular comic is one of the top 20 CGCgraded copies. Steve Ditko’s Amazing Spider-Man #27 splash page one original art (Marvel, 1965) hauled in $239,000. The page features Spider-Man and his greatest villain - the Green Goblin. Headlining the Underground Comix lots was Robert Crumb’s Thrilling Murder Comics #1 “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” complete four-page story original art (San Francisco Comic Book Co., 1971), which sold for $143,400, setting a new world record for the artist. Considered one of Crumb’s most violent and taboo-breaking stories, this art combines the title of the 1969 Rolling Stones song with the events that led to the notorious Tate-LaBianca murders by Charles Manson’s “family” members. COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: New Year, New Collection

Peter Swift Seibert As someone who loves to collect, I always love to start new collections. While the market has begun to uptick in certain areas, there are a lot of areas that still languish and provide great opportunities. Visiting Adamstown over the last few months, I have found some fabulous

19th-century ceramics. From late Chinese export porcelain of 1810 to aesthetic period ceramics from the 1890s, there are tremendous bargains to be found in collecting within this area. I remember when I first began collecting as a teenager and wondering if I could ever find examples of Victorian ceramics that were affordable. The late Elsie Doehne told me that I should wait for the very best. Well, now, 40 years later, I can start to find those ceramics at bargain prices. Another area that still remains highly undervalued is brown furniture of the 19th century. While we have seen

a recovery of some earlier and later materials (a colleague in the auction business said the lawyers all want Mid-Century Modern rather than 18th-century walnut), there is a lot of room here. For years, antique furniture was promoted as of better quality and cheaper than new furniture. Then the furniture industry picked up on the clues and began making high quality furniture at reasonable prices. That killed off the mindset that old was better than new. Today, the rock bottom prices for older brown furniture really makes it a smart buy for the young collector looking for quality

at an affordable price. I recall reading an article in Art and Antiques about 30 years ago that listed bargains for collectors to consider. Some of the categories have seen a recovery (such as early English and European decorative arts), while others like American Empire furniture have remained flat. One of the items that was noted as a real bargain was American woven coverlets of the 19th century. That is an area that I think is really undervalued. I recall back in the 1990s that there were fantastic prices being paid for coverlets. Certainly among the rarest of the rare,

prices can still be very high for the gems. But I think today, this is an exceptional area to begin collecting. There are wonderful items available for sale at really reasonable prices. The secret with coverlet buying is condition, condition, condition. One needs to really evaluate each coverlet carefully. Now certainly any textile that is more than 150 years old is not going to look brand new, but it is important that you look carefully. Many coverlets have lost their original fringe due to wear and then subsequent trim ups. This would be a fatal flaw to most collectors, so be very cautious in

how you buy. Finally, I would circle back to an old favorite - tin. I have always said that tin is the one area for a young collector to latch on to with the chance to build a great collection at an affordable price. Tin was a critical part of 19th century life, and there is an almost infinite variety of material to collect. It is rarely faked and there are signed and documented pieces. For years, I have picked up the odd item by the Stailey Brothers of Liverpool, who were Colonial revival tinsmiths in that small riverside Pennsylvania town. Tin remains a great collecting opportunity.

crossroads for generations of antiques enthusiasts. It is an easy drive north from Baltimore and Washington, D.C., west from Philadelphia, and south from Harrisburg. Fewer showgoers fly in for the show as in the past, but York remains an easy place to get to. Local group shops in New Oxford and Abbottstown also foster the industry. Some special material changed hands at the show. Things priced accordingly found new homes. The diversity of offerings and items at different price points rank among the strengths of the show. “I found a number of buyers eager to shop, and they left with purchases,” commmented one pleased dealer. Taking place close to the holiday season aids the Fall show. Many showgoers were gift shopping, and Christmas material in particular was popular with the decorator crowd. From 3 to 6 p.m. on opening day, there was a champagne toast and book signing with Bob Richter. Richter’s book, “A Very Vintage Christmas,” was available for purchase. Also available was the catalog for the weathervane exhibit at Landis Valley Farm Museum in Lancaster, Pa. The exhibit runs until Saturday, Dec. 31, and is a must-see. On Sunday, the first 50 showgoers were given a keepsake ornament, and a guided tour of the show was offered from 1 to 3 p.m. Like all smart business people, Bockius and company are investing in the show. The overall quality was high, and the forecast encouraging. The Spring York Show will take place on Saturday and Sunday, May 6 and 7. “We will be changing the Sunday hours to 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to accommodate exhibitors headed to Brimfield,” said Bockius. Ceramics in many categories is a strength of the Greater York show. This Staffordshire figure of Franklin, marked “Washington” was $1,800 from Elinor Penna Antiques of Old Westbury, N.Y.

Arborfield Americana of St. Louis, Mo., asked $6,450 for their collection of 30 twig walking sticks and pointers. They were carved by William Abbott Willard (1851-1939) of Connecticut. Many of them have various poems and Bible verses on them. The wrought-iron peel was $300.

The Greater York Show the interest in decorative arts and disposable income to collect. Whether they are long- or short-term collectors, buyers have traditionally been established in careers and finances, and hence, middle aged. It was that way in the ’70s and ’80s and remains so today. Too many of the Boomers’ children have not followed in their parents’ footsteps. Yet, some have entered the market, given the price of entry is lower than it was a generation ago, meaning buying power is greater today, on average. Bockius understands this and pushes his show as a buyer’s market. Yet, even with a more ecomonic-friendly market, retired collectors are not being replaced fast enough, and selling overall, for most, was off at this show. The Greater York Show is becoming more of a regional show, with fewer out-of-state exhibitors. York, Pa., has served as a

before the brothers left with it. The brothers have been arrested, and the fake painting is being held by police, but the sheik and the middleman have vanished with the brothers’ borrowed $300,000. So much for the philosophy that you can’t outscam a scammer!

Scammers have had it rough lately. From busts of warehouses full of fake designer goods to art scams gone awry - and now a new law created to protect consumers against forged signatures, which we’ll discuss at the end of this column - law enforcement has been cracking down on crime. Here are a few of the notables to wrap up the year. Methinks He Doth Protest Too Much... Once playing a holier-than-thou role by slamming a former art forger/author for blaming an online auction site for making it too easy to sell fake art, a Michigan art dealer was arrested for doing the same thing - selling fake art. At the same time as another major art fraud trial was taking place, the Michigan man, using multiple aliases, was arrested for selling fake artworks he represented as having been painted by abstract expressionist masters. But he didn’t just sell them - he went so far as to create believable false provenance through fake paper trails to make their authenticity convincing. The art was sold through a Connecticut auction house via an online auction site to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars each. Although the dealer claimed he had purchased or inherited the art, the FBI discovered that some of the documents contained fake addresses, while others claimed to have been

purchased from a well-known New York art dealer. Still others had receipts or bills of sale dated prior to the dealer’s birth. There were other inconsistencies, as well. Scamming The Scammers Two brothers from Spain had a plan to sell a fake Francisco de Goya painting, titled “Portrait of don Antonio Maria Esquivel,” to a wealthy sheik for over $4 million in Swiss francs. They paid a middleman over $300,000, which they borrowed from a friend, for an introduction to the sheik. The sheik agreed to purchase the painting, and his first payment of $1.6 million was delivered to the brothers via the middleman. But when the brothers attempted to deposit the money, they were told the cash itself was fake the notes were merely photocopies. Like something out of a movie, the brothers had gotten the cash authenticated, but the middleman was somehow able to switch the real cash for the photocopies

Forgetfulness Doesn’t Always Equal Happiness The 42-year-old man who ran one of the biggest designer counterfeit manufacturing schemes in the U.S. wouldn’t agree with Nietzsche that happiness is being able to forget. The man in question forgot to pay the rent on his unmarked warehouse space, and while sheriffs were serving an eviction notice, they discovered 3,000 boxes packed with counterfeit designer goods. The clothing, coats and boots all contained fake labels and logos from brands such as UGG, Polo, Northface and more. The items had been shipped from overseas and a staff was employed in the warehouse to sew the fake logos and labels onto the clothing. They even attached fake department store tags and bar codes to the items. A Mother-Son Fraud Team How’s this for a family business: an Ohio mother-son team ran a fake sports memorabilia ring - of which the son was the mastermind - that defrauded online buyers out of millions of dollars. Considered to be one of the largest fraud schemes of its kind in U.S. history, complete with fake bank accounts, charges included telecommunications fraud, money laundering, forged signatures and fake merchandise as well as aggravated theft. The mother, who was responsible for mailing the packages of fraudulent memorabilia, was sentenced to one year of house arrest; the son, whose bond has been set at $500,000, goes on trial

Jan. 3, 2017, and faces a possible sentence, if convicted, of up to 40 years in prison. And now for a news flash: A new law will go into effect in January 2017 regulating the sale of autographed memorabilia (any items valued at over $5) by California sellers or by sellers outside California to someone in the state. In an attempt to protect buyers from forged signatures, dealers must meet a set of requirements, including providing COAs with specific information. This is a highly simplified overview of the new law, which you can read about (“AB-1570: Collectibles: Sale of Autographed Memorabilia”) in its entirety at https://leginfo.legislature.ca.g ov. There’s a lot of confusion and controversy surrounding AB-1570, but even so, the general feeling is that the old saying will apply here, “As goes California, so goes the country.”

In Memoriam: Antique Toy Expert Richard Bertoia, 62 Richard “Rich” Bertoia, an expert in the field of antique toys and an associate with family-owned Bertoia Auctions, died peacefully on Dec. 19 at his home in Vineland, N.J. He had waged a courageous battle against cancer over the past year and was 62 years old. Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1954, Rich moved with his family to Millville, N.J., when he was 3 years old. He attended Millville schools and graduated from Cumberland County College and Rowan University. As a boy, he developed an interest in early glass and other antiques. At age 12, he began collecting antique bottles that he and his older brother, Bill, dug up in southern New Jersey. He was soon buying and selling at local bottle shows. After college, Rich began his career as a teacher. He later moved into sales. In 1994, he joined the Bertoia family’s auction business as a cataloger and auction coordinator. There, he built a stellar reputation as an antique toy expert. He also authored several reference books on subjects such as antique motorcycle toys and antique advertising. He was an active member of many collector organizations; including the Antique Toy Collectors of America and Still Bank Collectors Club of America, and he served as a member of the board of the Mechanical Bank Collectors of America. Rich was known for his warmth and genuine friendliness. Although he was regarded as one of the world’s most knowledgeable authorities on antique toys and trains, he always remained humble and preferred to keep a low profile. He enjoyed soccer, karate, hunting for antiques, and music, especially the

percussion and rhythms of Santana. However, his greatest love was spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Trina (Guessford); daughters Nina, Lani and Monica; granddaughters Angelina and Ava; parents Ofelia and Hector; in-laws Pearl and Jim Guessford; nephew Michael Bertoia; niece Lauren Bertoia Costanza; sister-in-law Jeanne Bertoia; and brother-in-law Brian Guessford. He was predeceased by his brother, Bill, in 2003. Rich will be dearly missed by his family and friends, especially those from the antique toy collecting community. Washington attorney and former chair of the Smithsonian National Board Max N. Berry remembers his friend Rich as “a mild and gentle man – a truly great person who cared about everybody.” Berry said Rich had a disarming quality that made everyone want to know him better. “I never met anybody who said one negative thing about him or who didn’t consider him a good friend after getting to know him – which didn’t take very long at all. ... He has left us too soon.” Representatives of collector clubs have offered their condolences and recollections. Barry Seiden, past

president of the Mechanical Bank Collectors of America, said, “I knew Rich for many years. He was one of the finest gentlemen in the business. In our dealings, he was always very thorough and knowledgeable. If he didn’t know the answer, he would get the answer for me.” John Olshefski, president of the Antique Toy Collectors of America, said, “Rich was a very gracious person and always willing to help. ... I never once saw him get upset.”

Someone who knew Rich Bertoia very well is attorney, Yale Law School lecturer, and antique toy collector Anthony J. LaSala. “Rich Bertoia was a true gentleman, an antique toy expert and an exemplary family man and friend,” said LaSala. “He will be missed by all with whom he came in contact.” One of Rich’s friends of longest standing, attorney and antique toy collector Jerry Steiner, described his friend as “a brilliant man who could talk to you about anything.” Steiner recalled sitting next to Rich on a toy-club-sponsored

bus tour and being amazed by the depth of Rich’s knowledge on science, sports, politics and many other topics. “I think we covered it all during that trip,” said Steiner. “But when it came to toys, no one had a broader knowledge. I remember one time I was thinking about buying an old toy at an antique shop in Florida, but I didn’t really know anything about it. It was made of cast iron, which is not something I’m familiar with. I called a friend to ask him what he knew about it, and he said, ‘You should call Rich Bertoia. He’ll know.’ Whenever

an expert opinion was needed, it always filtered back to Rich.” In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in Rich’s memory to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org.

Early American Craftsmanship To Be Theme Of Forum Colonial Williamsburg Antiques Forum Will Run From Feb. 24 To 28 Renowned as one of the leading annual decorative arts gatherings in the country that attracts curators, scholars, collectors and aficionados each winter, the 69th Colonial Williamsburg Antiques Forum promises to uphold its tradition of sharing recent findings and insights in “Early American Craftsmanship: Influence and Innovation� from Friday, Feb. 24, to Tuesday, Feb. 28, 2017. Through a series of fascinating programs and lectures, attendees will delve into a dynamic aspect of

American material culture focusing on the heavy influence of home cultures on immigrant artisans and consumers over generations. British, German, French, African and other trade practices are evidence of these influences in the goods produced from Maine to Louisiana. Simultaneously, America’s distance from the Old World, its access to different materials, and interactions between diverse cultural groups created a fertile environment for innovation in the arts.

Scheduled speakers will include June Lucas, director of research at the Museum of Early Southern Decorative Arts, Kentucky Art Historian, Estill Curtis Pennington, and Lisa Minardi, noted scholar on Pennsylvania-German culture. Colonial Williamsburg curators will also speak on a broad range of topics ranging from “Two Nations Divided by a Common Craft: Silversmithing in Britain and America� to “The Swords of George Washington.� In addition to the formal program, forum guests may register for

optional hands-on workshops with the Colonial Williamsburg collections and private tours of historic homes in the region. The fee to attend Antiques Forum is $650 per person and includes three continental breakfasts, three coffee breaks, two afternoon refreshment breaks, an open-

ing reception, a closing reception and dinner, all presentations and a Colonial Williamsburg admission ticket valid through March 5, 2017. Full-time museum professionals can receive a 50 percent discount off the full registration fee, limited to two professionals per qualifying institution. An opening reception is included with the Museum Professional registration; however, the closing

reception and dinner are not included (a separate ticket for the closing reception and dinner may be purchased for $85). Some folks start baking Christmas cookies (or eating them). Others begin unraveling myriad strings of Christmas lights. And then there are those who don their first Christmas tree pins of the season. If sweaters festooned with sequined reindeer aren’t quite your cup of Christmas tea, Christmas tree pins provide a more subtle, yet equally sparkly salute to the season. Their glittering blend of

No two Christmas tree pins are quite alike. Season after season, from Thanksgiving right up until Christmas Day (and spilling over into those 12 days after), collectors can pin on an entire forest of Christmas tree pins, without ever once being stabbed by a repeat. They’re quite literally the gift that keeps on giving. The first mass-produced Christmas tree pins stretched their branches skyward in the 1940s. They came courtesy of such manufacturers as Weiss, Hobé, and Hollycraft. However, the pins achieved their greatest popularity during the 1950s and ’60s, when nostalgia for Christmases past was overlaid with a “modern” artistic interpretation of that nostalgia. Since Christmas tree pins were essentially “costume” rather than “fine” jewelry, almost every costume jewelry design firm included at least several tree pins in its inventory. The bowl is glazed in the traditional complex blue glaze, developed in the Henan province during the Northern Song and Jin dynasties. The curving sides rise from a short, unglazed foot. The interior is pale blue, with a purple splash. The bowl was last sold in 1956. Chinese white jade pieces are expected to do particularly well. A possible challenger to the Yuan Dynasty bowl for top lot honors is a white jade vase in the shape of moon flask, with curved, scroll-shaped ears from the neck to shoulder, 7.75 inches tall. Carved with a central character and the outside of the body
