Brandywine River Museum Of Art Presents

“Jamie Wyeth”

Six Decades Of Work Will Be On View Jan. 17 Through April 5 major retrospective exhibition of artist Jamie Wyeth will examine his distinctive approach to realism over the course of six decades, from his earliest portraits to the present. “Jamie Wyeth” will include more than 100 paintings depicting the landscapes of the Brandywine Valley and coastal Maine, family members and fellow artists, as well as domesticated and wild animals, many executed in “combined mediums,” the artist’s preferred term to describe his technique. “Jamie Wyeth” will be on view at the Brandywine River Museum of Art in Chadds Ford, Pa., from Saturday, Jan. 17, through Sunday, April 5. “We are thrilled to present the largest and most comprehensive survey of Jamie Wyeth’s art ever to be assembled,” said Thomas Padon, director of the Brandywine River Museum of Art. “Jamie Wyeth’s paintings find special resonance here in the galleries amidst our collection of paintings by his highly talented family and in the location of his childhood home, his first studio and his most consistent muse, the Brandywine Valley. Wyeth’s feverishly creative vision is powerfully conveyed in the extraordinary works in this exhibition.” Born into a renowned family of artists, including his grandfather, N.C. Wyeth (1882-1945); his father, Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009); and his aunt, Carolyn Wyeth (1909-94), Jamie Wyeth was given the opportunity and support to pursue painting seriously at a young age, although he never formally studied art, instead learning from his aunt Carolyn. Over the course of his career, he continued in the footsteps of his family by painting nearly exclusively in the Brandywine Valley and in Maine, while developing a highly personal approach to his art and exploring subjects and themes over several decades. The exhibition will present a full overview of Jamie Wyeth’s works, including childhood drawings, his first virtuoso portraits, and early images inspired by his participation in NASA’s “Eyewitness to Space” program. The exhibition also includes paintings made during his time in New York with Andy Warhol at the Factory and his sketches and paintings of ballet star Rudolf Nureyev. His work in book illustration,

examples of which will be on view, harkens back to his grandfather’s professional successes. His large scale portraits of barnyard animals and birds are forerunners to his series of the seven deadly sins as portrayed by seagulls, which displays Wyeth’s range and brilliant technique. Many themes recur in Wyeth’s work, including the people and places most familiar to him, favorite subjects like animals and pumpkins, and even mysterious events and dreams. In Maine, Wyeth often focuses on the buildings and the people rather than the dramatic seascapes so often depicted by other artists. In Pennsylvania, many of his works depict his wife, Phyllis Mills Wyeth, in pursuit of her passion for carriaging, combining monumental scale equine painting with highly personal portraits. Wyeth’s compositions reflect inspiration drawn from artists as diverse as John Singleton Copley, Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, Rockwell Kent, and Edward Hopper, all of whom are represented by

works of art in Wyeth’s personal collection. Jamie Wyeth includes portraits of subjects such as John F. Kennedy, Andy Warhol, and Rudolf Nureyev, shown alongside a selection of preparatory drawings and studies that offer a unique insight into the development of his work. “Portrait of Shorty” (1965), from the collection of Andrew and Betsy Wyeth, has been compared to Copley’s “Boy with a Squirrel,” a painting which the 18th-century artist sent to England to announce himself to the established art world. Wyeth’s painting, made when he was a teenager, functions in a similar manner, signaling the arrival of a remarkable new talent. “Voyeur,” a 2012 painting of Warhol, is a product of the close study Wyeth made of Warhol during their collaboration in the 1970s. “In Voyeur, Warhol’s pale figure materializes on the rocky coast like a restless spirit, eternally watching and recording life through his ever-present camera,” said Amanda C. Burdan, associate curator at the Brandywine River Museum of Art. Warhol reappears in a series of paintings made since 2009, depicting the painter’s recurring dream of his artistic mentors, Winslow

Homer, Warhol, N.C. Wyeth and Andrew Wyeth, posed in various configurations on the dramatic shore of Monhegan Island. Other recent works include “Sleepwalker” (2013) and two mixed media assemblages that the artist calls “tableaux vivants”: “The Factory Dining Room” and “La Côte Basque” (2013), both recalling Wyeth’s experiences in New York. Never shown before this exhibition, these two miniature compositions, painted and sculpted at one-sixth life scale, connect Wyeth’s vision to a long tradition of surrealist and realist assemblage and introduce yet another dimension of the imaginative worlds that inspire his creative process and, ultimately, his compositions. Exhibition Catalogue “Jamie Wyeth” (MFA Publications, 2014) examines Wyeth’s work within a wide range of realist traditions, including those of his contemporaries and past American masters, giving particular attention to the multifaceted nature of the creative process over the course of the artist’s career. Written by Elliot Bostwick Davis, the John Moors Cabot Chair, Art of the Americas, at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, with an essay by David Houston, director of the Bo Bartlett Center, College for the Arts, Columbus State University, Georgia, “Jamie Wyeth” features 208 pages and 143 color illustrations and is available in the museum shop and online for $50. Exhibition Travel Schedule Organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the exhibition will travel to two additional venues: the San Antonio Museum of Art (April 26 to July 5) and Crystal Bridges Museum of Art (July 23 to October 4). At the Brandywine River Museum of Art, the exhibition is sponsored by Natalie and Herb Kohler on behalf of Kohler Co. and by David and Lisa Spartin. The national tour is sponsored by Bank of America. The Brandywine River Museum of Art is located on U.S. Route 1 in Chadds Ford, Pa. It is open daily (except Christmas Day) from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission is $12 for adults, $8 for seniors age 65 and over, $6 for students and children ages 6 to 12 and free of charge for children under age 6 as well as Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art members. A Black Forest Carved Hall Rack Featuring A Life-Size Dog Realizes $19,600 At S & S Auctions An antique Black Forest hall rack with a finely carved, life-size dog, 30 inches tall, sold for $19,600 at an estates auction held Nov. 16 and 17 by S & S Auctions Inc. in the firm’s gallery located at 62 Repaupo Station Road in Repaupo, N.J. The hall tree was the top achiever of the 783 lots offered in the auction that grossed $857,500. All prices quoted include a 22.5 percent buyer’s premium. Quality 19th-century Swiss Black Forest carvings of forest animals, trees, branches and leaves are highly coveted as collectibles. The hall tree, overall 84 inches tall and 32 inches wide, was in good condition, yet had some repair. “We were very pleased that this auction featured several large collections of a high quality caliber,” said Glenn Sweeney of S & S Auctions Inc. “We had great examples of French items, sculptures and furniture, among other categories. It was a successful and heavily attended sale, in person and online,” said Sweeney. Internet bidding was provided This fine antique Black Forest carved hall rack with life-size, 30-inch dog sold for $19,600.

The next day, a discovery sale featuring around 2,000 uncataloged lots was held, followed by the second session of the cataloged portion with 464 lots. Headlining the sale was the estate of a prominent, deceased doctor from Ventnor, N.J., and items from a retired auctioneer in northern New Jersey. The biggest surprise of the sale (and the second top lot of the auction) was an Emile Galle etched art glass vase, just 3.25 inches tall and etched with a goddess riding a dolphin with two maidens. The vase was signed “Emile Galle for Nancy” and was clear glass with blue

A Remembrance: Harry B. Hartman By Karl Pass

Veteran antiques dealer and interior designer Harry B. Hartman of Marietta, Lancaster County, Pa., passed away on Jan. 3 at the age of 84. “He really helped make people’s collections blossom,” said friend Jerry Martin of Virginia. Hartman was a wellknown antiques dealer who specialized in early American antiques, notably Pennsylvania folk art and country material. He had a sharp eye for design and impeccable taste. Hartman was born in Cape May, N.J., in 1930, but was raised in the Oley Valley of Berks County, Pa. Hartman restored several historic properties over the years and came to the

Susquehanna River town of Marietta around 1967. Prior to that, he resided in Lumberville, Bucks County, Pa. His first property in Marietta was the old White Swan Tavern. Hartman, along with his business partner Oliver C. Overlander II, exhibited at several antiques shows a year and assisted numerous collectors in forming collections and restoring houses. He was a figure of great warmth and kindness and could be seen, often in the front row, at every major auction. He is survived by his identical twin brother Bob Hartman. Harry’s passing marks the loss of an icon in the Pennsylvania antiquing community. He was a friend and will be missed.

SHOPS & CENTERS COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBERT This Week: A Few More Thoughts On Estates

Peter Swift Seibert

This past summer was the estate sale(s) of my old friend John Snyder. I watched Conestoga Auction Company do a great job in selling John’s incredibly diverse collection and huge kudos to Jeff and Doris DeHart for all they did. One of the things that made me somewhat sad is that while John’s knowledge of his collection was phenomenal, he never recorded the information regarding each item. John was the rare collector who could devote himself full time to collecting and researching antiques. He brought his sharp mind and brilliant research skills to the study of his collection. What

he did not bring was the foreknowledge that if he had written down his thoughts and physically attached them to the pieces that he would have helped a future generation of collectors. As a result, many of the pieces were sold without the benefit of the great mind that had studied them. As you can no doubt tell, this bothers me a lot as I all too often see collections broken up and the invaluable history behind pieces lost. Sure, there are collectors who don’t care but there are an equal number, and perhaps more, who really want to know the story behind something. I remember some years ago being in a house in Lancaster, Pa., while I was studying the early profile panel portraits by Jacob Eichholtz. The collector that I was visiting had a portrait, albeit one from New England, and so I asked to see it just to further my own knowledge. We were chatting in the living

room and his wife went to get the work that was hanging on the wall in their bedroom. She came back in grumbling that no one ever cleaned their house and so she had wet a rag and was busy getting off the chalk inscription on the back of the painting. We both came out of our chairs pretty fast but alas it was too late, the name of the subject and possibly that of the artist had been lost. First, because of the overzealous cleaning by the wife, and second, because no one had made a note elsewhere on the inscription. It does not take long to sit down and type or handwrite out the background on objects in your collection. The older I get, the more I realize that

death and illness can catch us in the blink of an eye. Spend a rainy Sunday writing down the information and attach it to everything. That way, God forbid something should happen, there will be a record about the pieces. An even better suggestion is to also have a back-up copy of that information made and kept with your will in a safe place. That way, you are sure that it will not be lost. I have done this with items for my daughters, ensuring that each piece has a tag on it as well as a list that is appended to my will. While things may happen after my passing, at least I know that the history on these items is safe.

Because of the continuing success of this York show, there’s little turnover, giving visitors the opportunity to really get to know the dealers. The new exhibitors will be Paul De Coste of West Newbury, Mass.; Samuel Herrup of Sheffield, Mass.; Louis & Clark Antiques of Tyler Hill, Pa.; Tanning Antiques of Pittsburgh, Pa.; Athena Antiques and Estate Jewelry

considered the rarest finds for his personal collection. Visitors to the exhibit will see how a small group of Amish women created, over a period of about 50 years, a powerful body of work that reflects their culture and aesthetics. Three galleries are filled with stunning examples of block patterns favored by the Ohio Amish, including Log Cabins, Roman Stripe, Nine Patch and Ocean Waves. All these quilts exemplify the hallmark of the Ohio Amish style, the use of small brightly colored pieces showcased against

dark backgrounds. They further illustrate that their makers had an intuitive sense of color and understood how to manipulate hue and value to achieve sparkle and glow. “Plain” quilts, a more subtle artistic expression than the colorful pieced quilts, consist of a large expanse of a solid fabric with a contrasting border. Amish are known for their exquisite hand quilting and the plain quilts are filled with complex feathered wreaths and cable designs. For more information, visit www.sjquilt museum.org.

The hall is located at 334 Carlisle Ave. in downtown York, Pa. also seen in Heritage’s Fine and Decorative Arts department’s record year, with a total reaching almost $50 million, led by more than $26 million in Fine Art sales across the American, European and Modern and Contemporary categories. The vintage Luxury handbags re-sale market, where Heritage is the undisputed leader, showed reliable growth in 2014 as collectors continued flocking to the market for high-end Hermès Luxury Accessories in the company’s signature auctions and Internet-only auctions, investing more than $9.3 million over the course of the year, significantly improving on 2013’s record $7.7 million total. Another bright spot in Heritage’s year was the $8.2 million debut of its Luxury Real Estate category, the first of its kind introduced by a major auction house. Buyers and sellers both responded to the streamlined, transparent process of the auctions, and solid prices were realized on the properties that Heritage moved across the auction block. Heritage also saw steady year-over-year growth in several of its most important and

industry-leading collectibles categories, including $31.2 million in Comics and Comic Art, $29.7 million in Vintage Sports memorabilia, and $8.5 million in Movie Posters. Heritage remains the leading auction house in these three categories. For more information, visit www.HA.com.

Rock Island Auction Company’s (RIAC) Premiere Firearms Auction held Dec. 5 to 7 proved to be quite an exciting and successful weekend. In fact, it seemed rather appropriate that the auction taking place in the shadow of the Black Friday shopping weekend would be a buzzing, competitive, and fast-paced affair. At the end of the three days, the auction would achieve $11.4 million in sales, bringing the annual total for 2014 to $47.5 million for the firearm specialty firm. The first day set the trend for the whole weekend’s bidd i n g battles

AUCTION SALE BILLS

www.antiquesandauctionnews.net

Sotheby’s Sets New World Record For A Photography Auction

On Dec. 11 and 12, the single-owner sale titled “175 Masterworks To Celebrate 175 Years of Photography: Property from Joy of Giving Something Foundation” at Sotheby’s New York brought the outstanding total of $21,325,063, comfortably exceeding the pre-sale estimate of $13-20 million, with 90 percent of lots sold. World auction records were set for Alvin Langdon Coburn, August Sander, Tina Modotti, Julia Margaret Cameron, Lee Miller, Walker Evans and others. The total exceeds the previous record for a photographs auction by over $6 million. Sotheby’s sale of “Important Photographs from The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Including Works from the Gilman Paper Company Collection,” held in 2006, previously held the record with a total of $15 million. “This recordbreaking sale has been a celebration of photography, the most profound, inventive, and beautiful artistic medium of our time. The masterpieces in the auction spanned the mid19th-century to the present day and featured the extraordinary talents that have always characterized the very best photographers. It is therefore entirely fitting that the proceeds will be used for the innovative educational Alfred Stieglitz’s “Evening, New York from the Shelton” flush-mounted, mounted again to board, framed, 1931, est. $200,000-$300,000, sold for $929,000.

work of Joy of Giving Something Foundation,” said Denise Bethel, chairman, Sotheby’s photographs, Americas. She continued, “Throughout my 25 years at Sotheby’s, we have handled the most significant singleowner sales of photographs to come to auction, whether from museums, corporations, or private collectors. The collection put together by Howard Stein was unprecedented in its scale, scope, and ambition, and now ‘175 Masterworks To Celebrate 175 Years of Photography: Property from Joy of Giving Something Foundation’ takes its place at the pinnacle of photographs sales.” “The extraordinary prices

for so many diverse works and a total of $21.3 million in the ‘175 Masterworks To Celebrate 175 Years of Photography: Property from Joy of Giving Something Foundation’ are resounding signs that the market for classic photographs has never been stronger,” said Christopher Mahoney, head of Sotheby’s photographs department. “With eight prices over $500,000 and numerous records set, the auction demonstrated the enormous appetite among a broad base of collectors for top-tier photographs from the 19th and early-20th centuries. Both of our top lots, Alvin Langdon Coburn’s ‘Shadows and Reflections,

Venice,’ from 1905 and the ‘1931 Evening, New York from the Shelton’ by Alfred Stieglitz, were sought by numerous collectors before two determined bidders drove prices to multiples of the high estimates. Both pieces are now among the most expensive photographs ever sold at auction, along with other works in the sale by artists such as MoholyNagy, Gustave Le Gray, and August Sander.” The proceeds of the sale will be used towards the Joy of Giving Something’s educational projects. AUCTION SALE BILLS

Rich Penn Auctions Sells The Mark Wilson Collection On Oct. 31, the Elwell building at the Iowa State Fairgrounds was packed with eager bidders. All were ready for the three-day Rich Penn Auctions event featuring the Mark Wilson collection. The auction was jammed with an abundance of country store, advertising, petroliana, Native American, and a superb selection of stoneware. The This 60-gallon with wing stoneware water cooler by Red Wing had two factory holes at bottom and one on the side. It was in good condition, but had an old hairline crack. It sold for $3,300.

stoneware examples represented the entire production years of Minnesota’s Red Wing Potteries. One of the biggest attractions, partly because of its size, was a rarely seen 60-gallon water cooler. The 44inch-tall cooler sold for $3,300 to an excited young buyer. Another stoneware 50-gallon Birchleaf ice water cooler with Red Wing ski oval sold for $1,700. In addition to stoneware, the Friday session featured hundreds of toys and a variety of A 50-gallon Red Wing stoneware water cooler, Birchleaf with Red Wing ski oval and spigot hole and short hairlines at bottom, sold for $1,700.

furniture. The pace of the sale moved quickly. There were nearly 2,000 online bidders from over 40 countries, along with phone and absentee bidders and a f u l l house. T o y s seemed to be the lots that drew the bidders from across the globe. An early 1890s sound and sturdy child’s Police Patrol Wagon, in original condition, stopped bidding traffic at $2,000. It was tailgated by another smaller child’s Patrol Wagon in a different color scheme. That circa 1890 wagon sounded the “Sold” siren at $1,800. An Eagle and Eaglet cast iron mechanical bank manufactured by J. & E. Stevens & Co. flew away at $2,000. There were a number of Popeye toys, including a Popeye Puncher and Popeye on Skates. They sold for $600 and $675 respectively. On Nov. 1, bidders returned for country store and soda fountain items. A bidder with a sweet tooth dished up a winning $4,000 bid for a rare

$3,000. Most Rich Penn Auctions events feature great Coca-Cola memorabilia. At this one, a red button-top metal sign, “Take Home a Carton of Quality Refreshment,” brought $2,750. A die cut Reddi Kilowatt three-color neon advertising sign for Mazda Lamps lit up the room to

This soda fountain syrup dispenser, Fowler’s Cherry Smash, complete with Cherry Smash pump and in near-mint condition, sold for $3,700.

A country store Columbia umbrella or cane case, manfactured by Wm. A. Drown & Co. with oak roll top and inlaid oak and walnut marquetry on sides and front, as well as stenciled advertising on both sides and openings for 70 umbrellas or canes, sold for $3,000.

This Winchester Tools five-panel window display, not pictured in “Winchester’s Book of Rarities,” is circa 1930s. The far left panel has some fading. The other four panels were in excellent condition with great color and measured 41-by-101-inches (assembled) or 20 inches wide per panel. It sold for $2,700.

“Smack Dab In The Middle: Design Trends of the Mid-20th Century” Starstruck: Collecting Movie Star Ads The year was 1929. Makeup maven Max Factor had just signed a first batch of Hollywood stars to endorsement contracts. With the blessing of their studios, the performers would appear in print ads promoting Max’s latest cosmetics. Not so coincidentally, those ads would also promote the studios’ latest movie releases.

Naturally, the stars needed to be compensated. But what was fair? Millions? Thousands? Hundreds? Nope. The “Max Factor Girls,” as they came to be known, each received annual compensation in the heady amount of. . .one dollar. That’s right. One dollar. And the starry ladies who contracted with Mr. Factor were happy to have it. Over the years, Max Factor’s movieland roster came to encompass a significant slice of Hollywood history.

Now, free publicity is nice. . .but signing over your image for just a dollar? Why were the stars of Hollywood’s Golden Age so agreeable? Well, because there were so many of them. Old-time Hollywood studios churned out movies more rapidly than Hormel churns out cans of Spam. Every evening on the silver screen, new faces were offered up for public consumption. Magazine ads like Max Factor’s made sure those new faces had a chance to register, while at the same time making sure that familiar faces weren’t forgotten. It was a dynamic return on a dollar’s investment. Soon, the stars shone brightly for an entire cosmetics counter’s worth of glamour goodies. Of course, the majority of Hollywood stars, even dressed in gunny sacks, faces

scrubbed with laundry soap, would still leave onlookers gobsmacked by their natural beauty. This was never mentioned. Instead, the message conveyed was simple: use Max Factor (or Woodbury, or Lux), and you could be just as lovely “Folks, you don’t know the fun you are missing!” Lawrence as Lana or as irresistible as Welk promotes the “swept-wing ‘57 Dodge” in TV Guide, April 6, 1957.

Fortunately, stacks of adladen magazines can still be found at estate and garage sales; prices run in the $5 to $20 range. If you’re interested only in a single star, a ready-to-go ad is an option. Enterprising dealers buy up old magazines and dissect them, selling ads featuring specific performers at $5 to $10. The cut-outs make it possible to take a tour through German military and political history, from the Battle of JenaAuerstedt in 1806 right up to the Maginot Line in 1940. These German paper soldiers, or papiersoldaten zum ausschneiden, are, without a doubt, unique visual images that, nowadays, are similar to archaeological artifacts, which are very hard to find on the market. Even today, the number of preserved or catalogued images in German museums is very small, so this hardcover book, showing thousands of figures in 173 color images, is an essential collection guide. scrambled to own one of the popular revolvers. A special R. L. Wilson special order Colt Python in Lot 1789, with a high estimate of $4,500, brought in a sale price of $11,500. Another Python, this time a scarce, inscribed, three-inch barrel Combat Python with its original box in Lot 1792, went even higher to sell for $12,650. Numerous Pythons, Anacondas, Cobras, and Diamondbacks would exceed the $5,000 mark and many surpassed the $10,000 mark. It could indicate an interesting market trend for those who collect these revolvers. After Saturday’s blitz on Colt double action revolvers, it would hardly be a surprise to see them do well again the following day. However, the success of double actions initially came from another source, Colt Model 1877/78 Lightnings and Thunderers, led by the William Baird collection. Lot 3268 had a rare

Lightning chambered in .32 Colt with a high estimate of $11,000. That number mattered little to the collectors at the RIAC facility, and the diminuitive revolver was eventually purchased for the price of $25,875. Similarly in Lot 3282, a Colt Model 1877 Target chambered in .32 S&W was estimated between $12,000-$18,000, but determined bidders drove the sale price to $31,625. Much like the first day of the auction, high-end sporting shotguns continued to be a sought after commodity by collectors, hunters, and investors. Lot 3453 saw its antique Parker Brothers Under Lifter side-by-side, Damascus barreled, 8-gauge shotgun powder its $9,000 high estimate to sell for $14,950. While a majority of these guns exceeded their high estimates, Lot 3461 did so in impressive fashion. The engraved and gold inlaid Ithaca Grade 7E double box lock shotgun broke the

bounds of its $7,000 high estimate on the way to its final figure of $13,800. The Edged Weapon collection of Maj. Gen. Theodore Paulson also achieved some attractive prices. Lot 3329’s etched and gilt-accented German presentation sword cut through its $3,000 high estimate to bring $5,175, and Lot 3445’s simple-looking yet scarce Hoerster production Hitler Youth Leader’s Dagger beat its $1,600 high estimate to sell for $4,312. The swords were stunning and many were

masterpieces of design and craftsmanship, but like the end of the day Saturday, things really began hopping again when the Colt DA revolvers started crossing the block. A 1956 production Colt Python in Lot 3790 would climb to a $5,462 sale price, another Python in Lot 3777 would see ascending bids ending in a $4,600 sale, and a Colt Viper with its original box in Lot 3786 sold for $4,312. It was a very dramatic end to 2014. Some genres such as

early and pre-Winchesters, further cemented their dominance as one of gun collecting’s iconic brands, while also proving to remain an excellent investment opportunity. Others, such as the Ithaca brand shotguns, while needing no introduction to seasoned shooters, began to make some noise a bit more audible to the public at large. The surge enjoyed by modern Colt double action revolvers and “snake guns” had collectors beside themselves at the end of the auction and discussing the explosive new growth. Will these trends continue or will other new interests by collectors and investors emerge to take the scene? Rock Island, located in Illinois, will hold its first four-day sale on Feb. 19 to 22. ry popular culture. Let’s riffle through a 1936 issue of Woman’s Home Companion. On our way to the “star ads,” we’re happily waylaid by a wealth of recipes, decorating tips, and short stories. Then, that first ad appears. It’s for Chase & Sanborn Coffee, sponsors of radio’s “Major Bowes’ Original Amateur Hour.” There’s the Major himself and all his newlydiscovered stars, including a vocal quartet, the “Hoboken Four”. Wait a minute. . .who’s that in the spotlight? Why, it’s the group’s lead crooner: skinny, smiling, and soon-to-be-famous Frank Sinatra! In the words of Woodbury Powder, that definitely qualifies as “a bit of stardust magic. . . a flawless, film-star finish.”
