Positive Debut Achieved At The First Kempton Antiques Show By Karl Pass

n a weekend of firsts, two new shows were held recently in southeastern Pennsylvania. The first Kempton Antique Show kicked off on Oct. 25 in the picturesque northern Berks County, Pa., town of Kempton, and in Lancaster, Pa., on Oct. 24 to 26, the first Lancaster County Antique Show was held. Both shows were wellreceived and are set to become annual events. There is a lot to be optimistic about concerning the state of the antiques industry in the heartland of the Keystone State. The inaugural Kempton show was a fun event set in a beautiful area of the state that has a tremendous amount to offer, especially to outdoor enthusiasts, including Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Crystal Caves, and the Appalachian Trail. The show was run by the Antique Dealers Association of Berks County and managed by Carol Buzzerd. There were 55 dealers in the spacious Kempton Community Recreation Center. The only drawback to the building was that half seemed well lit and the other half not as well. Kempton is a very small and very rural town in Albany Township, yet it is an easy drive off Route 78, not far from Kutztown. Attendance was good for the oneday event, which ran from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The dealer’s association used to hold a holiday show the first Saturday in December in Leesport, but opted to discontinue that show, opening the door for this new event. “We felt that Leesport just wasn’t progressing, we needed a little more space, and we also wanted to change the dates,” said organizing member John Bartley. “There are weekly flea markets held in the Leesport Market building and that didn’t work in our favor, because we

were holding an antiques show. But, I think the move to Kempton worked out for the best. We were pleased with the gate and most of the dealers seemed pleased,” said Bartley. Kempton is not entirely new territory for antique

shows. For those that remember, a small, yet popular antiques show was held there in the early 1980s. Remaining rich in Pennsylvania German history, the town proved receptive to hosting and supporting the new show. Collectors came from both

The First Historic Burlington City Antique And Gateway Posts Results From Art Emporium Show Held In New Jersey Columbus Day Sale “Black Friday Weekend Extravaganza” Slated On the Columbus Day holiday, Oct. 13, Gateway Gallery Auction in Chambersburg, Pa., held a variety sale highlighted by the sale of a 2003 Jeep Wrangler Sahara with 30 original miles, which sold for $19,000. A Timber Ridge gun safe brought $1,100, and a maple dining room suite sold for $525. A four-gallon Norton stoneware crock brought $500, and an Ethan Allen bookcase sold for $320. A Kendall advertising sign sold for $300, and a RPM motor oils advertising sign sold for $290. For further information, call 717263-6512.

On Oct. 26, the Historic Burlington City Antique and Art Emporium held their first antique show in the large group shop’s building and parking lot. Old and new customers met and conversed with the Emporium dealers about antiques and collectibles while negotiating prices. There was complimentary coffee, apple cider, soft pretzels, cupcakes, cake, and other finger foods available. The Emporium was built by Edward Supper almost 100 years ago to service and repair automobiles. The building lends itself very well today to housing an antique co-op. The Emporium has 65 dealers who offer antiques from the mid-1800s to modern day collectibles. The first show was deemed such a success that the dealers plan to hold another show in the spring (watch the Antiques & Auction News for show date). The Emporium’s next big event, titled a “Black Friday Weekend Extravaganza,” will take place on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Nov. 28 to 30. Once again dealers will be available to “talk turkey” and negotiate prices. Last year the shop’s customers and dealers filled two boxes for “Toys for Tots.” Individuals are asked o help the Emporium repeat this task in the spirit of giving. Boxes are ready for shopgoers’ kindness and generosity. For the little customers,

Over his remarkable sevendecade career, Andrew Wyeth (1917-2009) created thousands of drawings in pencil and watercolor, a body of work that he rarely exhibited. “Andrew Wyeth: Lines of Thought,” a new exhibition at the Brandywine River Museum of Art on view through Sunday, Feb. 8, 2015, presents 23 studies that provide a fascinating glimpse into his creative process.

SHOPS & CENTERS COLLECTOR CHATS WITH PETER S. SEIBER T This Week: Contemporary Collecting

Every collector, at some point in their journey, dreams about going back in a time machine to the point when whatever they collect was originally made. Oh … to have been alive then and to have put a few items away for posterity. With that dream then usually comes a second idea. Maybe I should collect something made now that will become collectible/valuable in the future. I recall running into a collector/dealer who was busy squirreling away contemporary advertising in the hope that it would pay for his grandchildren’s future. Contemporary collecting is not easy and for every person who hoards away masterpieces, there are probably four or five others who have just collected lots of stuff. The key to contemporary collecting is to stash away not just what you like but what others will like in the future. Part of that is understanding what

The flip story is about a group of materials that I was asked to look at recently where the collector had purchased every single release by a major toy manufacturer. He had not played with them but stockpiled them away. When the pieces were sold, it was not anywhere near what he thought they should have brought. Why? Because he failed to take into account that the items he hoarded were produced in huge quantities and that there were many other collectors who squirreled away items. Thus, the lesson is to acquire items that are both desirable and scarce or at least personal and unique. I am building some small collections of my own of contemporary collectibles. The

first are contemporary children’s flip-up or animated books. There are many collectors of these and I am sure that I am not the only one who is collecting them. Hence, I suspect this will be a collection that is not going to be a hugely valuable but my eldest daughter loves these, and it will be a great legacy for her. What do I look for? My eye is taken by books that are unique, quirky or particularly well done. When I was back East, I haunted Daedalus Books in Maryland for examples,

although similar outlets exist elsewhere in the country. They get squirreled away in a rubber tub with a note as to when I bought them. Another collection that I have been actively pursing is American military uniforms from over the last 20 years. With the constant changes in military clothing as a result of various wars, there is a rich range of material to choose from. I tend to only look for pieces that are fully patchedout, including names of original owners. I stay away from

specialized collector shirts and instead focus upon hunting in second-hand clothing stores to find solid examples. Each shirt is part of the story of America’s involvement in various conflicts during the late 20th and early 21st centuries. Each shirt is personalized and traceable to the original wearer. So will they be the hot collectible of the future? Who knows for sure? I have had fun building the collection and will enjoy passing it on some day. And isn’t that what it is all about?

collecting is about … scarcity and desirability. If an item is scarce but not desirable then it will not be valuable. Conversely, if there are lots of items, then the desirability is measured by how many of a given item a collector wants. So, let’s review some good and bad examples of this. The first is the story of the sale of a number of pieces of contemporary redware pottery that were purchased in the gift shop of the State Museum back in the early 1980s. The pieces were then resold at auction in the early 2000s, and they sold very well. Why? Because the appreciation for the artists had grown exponentially over time and now their early work was highly desirable.

However, he recently received an unsolicited offer he couldn’t refuse. “It was the oddest transaction I’ve seen in stamps. Someone called me in late September and said he represents some people overseas who want to buy my Jenny block. He told me they are not collectors, just wealthy people who want to buy things,” said Sundman. “He revealed they had purchased a copy of the Magna Carta and had a list of other rare items they wanted to buy, including a copy of the Declaration of Independence. It’s odd that noncollectors are spending millions on some of the greatest treasures. I’ve never seen anything like this in my 40 years in the hobby,” said Sundman. Sundman obtained the “Inverted Jenny” plate block in November of 2005 in a

trade with Gross, who had purchased it only a few weeks earlier for a thenworld record $2.97 million at a public auction in New York. In exchange for the block, Sundman traded his one-cent 1868 Z-Grill stamp that he acquired for $935,000 at a 1998 Siegel auction. Only two examples of that stamp are known; the other is owned by the New York Public Library. The historic swap, involving a total of five stamps with a combined face value of 97 cents in postage, was valued at the time at $6 million: $3 million for the “Inverted Jenny” plate block and $3 million for the 1868 one-cent Z Grill stamp. Sundman recently announced a reward on behalf of the American Philatelic Research Library (APRL) of up to $100,000 to locate the two still-missing

A comprehensive guide to collecting fire-related antiques, “Collecting American Firefighting Artifacts,” is now available. The new book by James Piatti and Sandra Frost Piatti presents a fascinating collection of functional items such as helmets, parade trumpets, fire extinguishing grenades, alarm boxes, and lanterns. It also offers ranking and ceremonial effects such as badges, trophies, medals and awards, and ephemera that celebrate the culture and mystique of firefighting. Toys, artwork, movie posters, and much more are also included. Even forgotten relics, such as firefighting adventure novels, are showcased and illustrate the enormous amount of respect and admiration society has had for firefighters.

Covering Colonial times to the present, with a brief historical introduction, this authoritative reference serves hobbyists and the most serious collectors of “firematics.” It has nearly 700 color photographs with detailed descriptions and upto-date pricing information. For pricing and ordering information, visit www.schifferbooks.com.

The Red Bank Antique Center To Celebrate Its 50th Anniversary Co-Op In Red Bank, N.J. Will Hold Special Celebration On Nov. 22 On Saturday, Nov. 22, the Antique Center of Red Bank will celebrate the group shop’s 50th anniversary. Located at 195 and 226 W. Front St. in Red Bank, N.J., the antique center has over 100 dealers in two buildings. There will be refreshments and various sales. The business is open seven days a week. Shop hours on Mondays to Saturdays are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. The center was opened in 1964 by Nan Johnson with 12 dealers in an old clothing factory. Johnson’s idea was to have a permanent antique show without an admission charge. It wasn’t long before she had

three buildings and 150 dealer booths. The antique center is one of the oldest antique co-ops in the nation. Jonhson’s son, Guy, entered the business in 1970 and currently manages the center. The two buildings showcase vast offerings of antiques and collectibles, art, sterling silver, and furniture. The center also offers jewelry repair and design services; clock, toy, and doll repair; lamp rewiring; furniture repair; upholstery services; and conducts appraisals. For more information about the anniversay celebration on Nov. 22, call either 732-8423393 or 732-842-4336 or visit www.redbankantiques.com.
