Haeger - 140 Years Of Wildly Popular Pottery leek. Sinuous. Colorful and cutting edge. Timeless, trim of line, and, above all, thoroughly modern. How many 140-year-olds can make that claim? Well, Haeger Potteries, for one. Founded in 1871, the Dundee,

From the very beginning, Haeger was distinguished by its starry roster of designers, often wooed away from competing firms. First up: J. Martin Stangl, glaze wizard for Fulper, until hired by Edmund. As Haeger’s ceramics engineer from 1914 until the dawn of the Roaring 1920s, Stangl performed the same magic he had
Stangl and his Haeger contemporaries was on classically simple, uncluttered Arts & Crafts stylings. Haeger’s roster of pots, jugs, vases, bowls, and candleholders all proved big hits with buyers. Interim designers kept the Haeger kilns busy until the 1924 arrival of Franz Koenig. By then, Art Deco was just beginning to emerge as the latest design trend; that position would be solidified by the Paris Exposition of 1925. Soon, Jazz Age consumers wanted more than just the soothing sim-

Once visitors had viewed the step-by-step pottery production process, how could they could resist picking up a piece of Haeger on the way out, (and purchasing plenty more after returning home?) Royal Prerogatives The World’s Fair brought Haeger to America’s attention but its grandest days of glory were still ahead. 1938 saw the promotion of Edmund Haeger’s forwardthinking son-in-law Joseph Estes to General Manager, the arrival of equally forward-thinking designer Royal Arden Hickman, and the introduction later that year of the wildly popular “Royal Haeger” line. (The “Royal” moniker, Estes always insisted, came about by accident. He’d been thinking along the lines of “Royal Doulton;” only after hiring his new designer did he learn of Hickman’s unusual first name. Although Royal Hickman departed Haeger in the mid-1940s, the “Royal Haeger” name remained.) Much has been written about the multi-talented Hickman. An Oregon native, he was equally at home creating in crystal, wood, aluminum, (and a dizzying array of other source materials), as he was in creating pottery. Snapped up by Haeger after stays at J.H. Vernon, Kosta Crystal, and his own Ra Art, Hickman quickly made his mark. Gone were any Old World remnants of earlier years. No more Haeger planters depicting winsome cherubs, dozing donkeys, and storks en route to the delivery room. Replacing them were leaping fish, birds taking wing, and a ubiquitous snarling black panther. (Since, the Haeger panther was so widely imitated by other ceramics firms, and was only distinguished by a paper label, it’s often hard to determine the Hickman original. Two clues to look for: hooded eyelids, and absolutely no embellishments). (Continued on page 2)

In a 1940 interview, Hickman commented on the change: “American ceramics are better than they have ever been before. The complete proof of this is the fact that Europe is enviously eyeing every piece we make over here - if not from the standpoint of quality, then from design and the methods of execution. The happy job of the ceramic designer is to try to make more beautiful things for everyday living.” Jewels In The Crown In 1944, Hickman left Haeger, following a dispute Royal Hickman’s “Peasant over lamp production. My pre-teen daughter’s friends love the retro lamps that are in her room. I have to confess that I purchased them not as great collectibles but simply funky, cheap lighting. If they broke them, then it would be no great loss. Instead, the 1950’s boudoir lamps and the 1960’s funky plaster ones are a big hit when her friends come over. Books!! Okay, so everyone gets books, but for my stepson who is a World War II buff, it was a vintage printing of the comics of Bill Mauldin, the World War II combat artist, that was a homerun. With the holidays upon us, I have again begun to think about what I would recommend to antiques buffs as gifts for their children and their non-collecting friends. I have to confess that shopping for kids who are not my own, particularly teenagers, is one of the most painful of exercises. Yet, I would venture to say that the current fascination with “retro by so many kids gives us a great opportunity to get really great and affordable gifts for teens, gifts that they

Ahh yes, those vintage round, black things that make music when played on a record player!!! I think records are a great gift for the teenager. Sure, it may entail getting them a record player (BTW, Crosley makes a nifty retro record player in a wooden case that is pretty cool!) but another spin on this involves the record jackets themselves. Teens are always looking for cool and unique artwork so purchasing a classic album and then securing a record cover frame for it is a great idea. Frames for displaying them are very inexpensive and can be purchased in many second hand record shops. (They also make great gifts for

This week we valued a Japanese Satsuma-style pottery vase 19 inches high. It dates from 1900-1920. The body’s form is an inverted baluster, moulded on the shoulders with handles in the form of fish from which depend tasselled cords. The whole vase rests on a circular stand which is raised on four Shishi-mask and paw legs and at the top of the domed cover there is a knop modelled as a seated Kwannon placed. To one side is a signature panel, reading “Nihon Kyoyaki Kinkozan Yasuda”. The whole vase is decorated in overglaze enamels, trailed slip and gilding with scenes of dignitaries and armoured warriors. Kwannon, or Guan Yin, was the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy and was frequently the subject of Japanese art objects. The Kinkozan workshop was renowned for its skills in producing overglazed enamelled pottery but this example is in fact from one of the minor pottery works that functioned in and around Kyoto in the early part of the twentieth century.

Not only that, on Sunday only, any customer who presents any receipt from the Annville Antique Station will be granted access to their traditional home cooked food, complimentary, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. “That’s right, it’s free with any receipt,” says Schoenberger. “It’s our chance to thank everyone for supporting our business and to show our appreciation. stocking hoping to see Santa,” the Center’s Curator and Historian Jim Morrison spoke with enthusiasm. “In the morning the tree was up, my stocking was lying beside me all filled up with goodies, and it was just an incredible time. I never got over it.” He describes his loan exhibit for the Metropolitan Pavilion as all about memories and fantasy and the wonder of Christmas past, and he invites the public to come and relive their memories
tells. “And when people visit this collection of memorabilia celebrating Christmases of New York past, they will rediscover their own memories.” The evolution of the American Santa Claus will unfold though a display that includes a picture of the first American Santa circa 1810 from the New York Historical Society. On display will be images from the 1820s and 1830s and depictions by Thomas Nast in the 1890’s. Morrison tells that it wasn’t until the Nast drawings that children started seeing the Santa we know today. The exhibit will include a gallery of depictions of Christmas in nineteenth-century New York City. Engravings from Harper’s and other sources illustrate sleighing in Central Park, shopping on Fifth Avenue, and other metropolitan holiday views. In a central exhibit is a Christmas garden featuring a large Vi c t o r i a n Christmas tree on a platform with a Lionel train and folk art village b e n e a t h . Morrison likens this part of the exhibit to the memorable displays he helped create at the Gotham Book Mart on West 47th Street years ago. Larry DeBaugh Tapped To Head Morphy’s Coin Op & Gambling Machines Division and outside of Nevada, Maryland, was the last state where it was legal to operate slot machines,” DeBaugh explained. “I can remember, as a boy, going to yacht clubs with my parents and seeing slot machines in play. Even after it became illegal, there were still places on Maryland’s eastern shore that had them in operation. I was always fascinated by them.” While in his early twenties, DeBaugh bought his first slot machine. “After that, it snowballed,” he said with a laugh. In addition to collecting machines, DeBaugh amassed what may be the country’s largest collection of original coin-op machine literature and gambling tokens. Having a natural mechanical aptitude, DeBaugh also learned how to restore machines that were no longer functional. “But the most fun has come from meeting other collectors at shows and auctions who share my interest in these Larry DeBaugh (left) makes a handshake deal with Morphy machines,” DeBaugh said.
