It’s exciting to see what imagination can do with some of the prized household possessions that you find waiting for adornment. Start with things you have. The precut kit components, from Santa’s beard, to Rudolph’s red nose, were lightly scored, ready to be popped from their felt backings, glued into place, and dotted with sparkling, sequined adornment. ‘50s CHRISTMAS
Corinne Earnest have describe them, “the largest body of manuscript art produced in America.” They have a folksy charm that people like, while also representing “cutting edge” technology (printing) for their time. What would I collect if starting a new collection of printed frakturs? 1. I would hunt for those works that were embellished by artists. Francis Levan, a crazed drunkard working in Berks County, took simple black and white printed forms and went nuts with color and pattern. They are definitely folk art! 2. Purchase them from an area that interests you. If you are from Lancaster County, then get examples printed by Lancaster printers as well as pieces done for Lancaster families. 3. Search for the oddball items. I recall one fraktur that the museum I directed acquired that was for a bastard child. A real rarity as it was proof for that child of who his unwed parents were. So consider printed fraktur as a wonderful folk art treasure!

guess as to why the three examples here are missing their lower sections. They were probably not designed to have them in the first place or they would have been cast as complete. They might have been designed as finials, perhaps to a fairground organ? We valued the item at $300.
Gathered together and stacked high, the unpacking begins. Strings of lights...delicate glass ornaments...treetopper angels, and twinkling stars. And there, carefully nestled in tissue amidst all the “store-bought” glory, are the holiday decorations nearest and dearest to our hearts. Grade school goodies. Paper plates and pipe cleaners, transformed, with a dusting of gold glitter (and too much glue) into sprightly angels. Empty thread spools, painstakingly painted red, then strung together on wire to form hanging “Santas”. Styrofoam balls, laboriously covered with pinned-on oversize colored beads, a ribbon loop at one end indicating the intended ornamental function. And felt stockings, decked out with pasted-on snowman faces and reindeer heads, liberally festooned with plenty of sequins and lots of gold braid. Over the years, more than one colored bead has fallen by the wayside. These days, the red paint is flaking on those spool “Santas”. The paper-plate skirts of the pipe-
cleaner angels are creased, in some places torn. They’ve been Scotch-taped (then Scotch-taped again). The feltstocking snowman is once again in need of a new sequined eye. But never mind the wear-and tear. These are our very own Christmas memories. We made them. Maybe we weren’t very good at it...maybe we still aren’t. But without this homemade holiday hoard...this lifetime of personal collectibles....it just wouldn’t be Christmas. “Don’t stop as soon as you’ve hung a wreath in the window, and set up the tree in the living room. ‘Do-it-yourself’ for the holidays, and make your entire home a pretty picture of the season!” Better Homes & Gardens Christmas Ideas, 1952 Donald-Brian Johnson is the co-author of numerous Schiffer books on mid-twentieth century design, including the recently released “Postwar Pop”. His holiday decorations include at least one homemade felt Santa. Please address inquiries to: donaldbrian@msn.com.

Smack Dab In The Middle:Design Trends Of The Mid-20th Century This Month: ‘Here Comes Santa Claus!’ “Here comes Santa Claus, Here comes Santa Claus, Right down Santa Claus lane!” Gene Autry & Oakley Haldeman, 1947 Santa. St. Nick. Father Christmas. No matter what they call him in your neck of the woods, it’s Christmas time again, and...he’s baaaack! Although the custom of Christmas gift-giving originates with the Three Kings, the legend of Santa Claus dates to the fourth century. Stories of his origin vary, but here’s one favorite: An impoverished noble-
man in Asia Minor, unable to provide dowries for his three marriage-minded daughters, was near despair. St. Nicholas, a wealthy, goodhearted bishop, heard of the nobleman’s plight. On a night before Christmas, he tossed three bags of gold through an open window in the man’s house. Each bag landed in a stocking hanging to dry before the fire (good aim, St. Nick!) Each daughter now had her dowry, and the nobleman, upon discovering his benefactor’s identity, spread news of this generosity far and wide. The saga of the mysterious and saintly holi(Continued on page 9)

Nicholas (i.e., parents), stayed with the stuffed-stocking theme, although bags of gold were quickly replaced by apples, oranges, candies, and small, homemade toys. Other cultures offered their own variations. Children in the Netherlands filled wooden shoes with hay, for the horses accompanying “Sinter Klaas” (that’s Dutch for “St. Nicholas”). The next morning, delightful goodies had miraculously taken the place of the hay. Italian children waited until January 6th, the “Feast of the Three Kings,” for the arrival of “La Befana,” who filled their empty shoes with treats. For Puerto Rican boys and girls, the Epiphany was also eagerly anticipated. Tiny boxes filled with munchies for the Wise Men’s camels - leaves

and other vegetation - were replaced by morning, with the sort of munchies human children enjoy. St. Nicholas made his way to America with Dutch
immigrants in the 1600s. Mispronunciations of “Sinter Klaas” by those unfamiliar with the language eventually resulted in the name we now know and love: “Santa Claus”! Initial depictions of Santa offer us a thin man with a long, scraggly white beard, clad in what appears to be a hooded, floor-length red bathrobe. Even Clement Clarke Moore’s 1822 poem, “A Visit from St. Nicholas,” which cemented in the popular consciousness such images as “stockings hung by the chimney with care,” “eight tiny reindeer,” and unannounced entrances via chimney, referred to Santa as a “right jolly old elf”. Edward Rowe Of Cordier Auctions Sold Rare Ivory Tankard For $16,000 Edward Rowe, auctioneer and director of logistics at Cordier Auctions, sold a rare 19thcentury Flemish carved ivory tankard at
Cordier Auctions on November 6, 2011. The tankard, consigned by a local estate, was intricately carved with scenes of Bacchanalia and putti. The tankard carried a pre-auction estimate of $10,000 to $15,000. The piece opened strongly with an online absentee bid of $13,000 and while there was much interest in the room, bidding remained entirely on the Internet with the final bid of $16,000 coming from a live online bidder in Brazil. Rowe, who has been in the auction business since Auctioneer Edward Rowe of Cordier Auctions & Appraisals 2005, joined Cordier auctioned this 19th century Flemish ivory tankard for $16,000”. Auctions two years ago as an

auctioneer and director of logistics. Cordier Auctions’ owner David Cordier noted “Ed Rowe is one of the key staff of our company and it’s rewarding to see him sell one of the top lots of our fall 2011 catalog auction at our
new Harrisburg location.” Other highlights of the auction included an Art Deco Cartier diamond wristwatch at $21,000 and a massive Chinese gilt screen at $10,000. A full write-up of Cordier
Auctions’s fall catalog auction will be coming soon. For more information on Cordier Auctions & Appraisals call (717) 7318662 or e-mail auctions@cordierantiques. com.
